(SOLVED) Dualboot Windows + Arch Linux (Windows boot partition)

Hi,
I have 4 partitions.
sda1: Windows boot partition (ntfs) - This has always been there
sda2: Windows Installation
sda3: HP_Tools - I need to keep this for warranty
sda4: Arch Installation
I want to use GRUB to have a dualboot option at startup. Do I need to install GRUB to the boot partition which is NTFS, this should be ext3 according to the tutorial.
Or can I just install grub on the Arch installation in the /boot folder?
Thanks already!

Then you didn't install grub to the MBR. Don't forget, installing the package isn't enough, you actually have to install grub to sda as a separate step.
So
# grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck /dev/sda
# cp /usr/share/locale/en\@quot/LC_MESSAGES/grub.mo /boot/grub/locale/en.mo
and then
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I forgot the installation ... I'm trying it in half an hour, thanks already for you help guys!

I have a windows boot partition.  Can I use my wireless keyboard in this environment?  Is there a place to download drivers or whatever?  Alternatively, is there a USB keyboard or whatever I can buy to work with my iMac in this partition environment?

I have installed Windows 7 in a boot camp partition. I can only use usb keyboard and mouse by booting Windows intyo safe mode, and I am totally unable to use my Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. How do I resolve this?
I'm running Lion - 10.7.2. Boot Camp Assistant fails to download drivers - that issue has been going on for some time, and has been reported by others as well.
But that answers your question.  You get the drivers by using BCA to download them.  Your inability to download the drivers is a separate issue than not being able to use your wireless keyboard.
While some people may have issues downloading the drivers, many others have successfully downloaded the drivers.  I have downloaded them fine on several different Macs.  It may take a long time, depending on the speed of your internet connection.  Mine took over 3 hours.
Regardless, you need to download the drivers using Boot Camp Assistant.  Try again, and if you still have problems, start a new thread and provide as much details as possible to describe what your seeing so that we don't have to go through this back-and-fourth, and you'll get your answer quicker.

  • [SOLVED] (U)EFI dualboot Win7 Arch Linux - partitions gone - recovery?

    Hi everybody,
I have a slight problem with my (U)EFI dualboot system (Windows 7 and Arch Linux) which used to be configured using rEFInd like it is described in my previous post:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1300356
<EFI PARTITION> is /dev/sda1 and I used to boot via <EFI PARTITION>\EFI\Boot\Bootx64.efi which then successfully either loaded Windows or Linux kernel.
Thanks to my own stupidity and a recent update of refind I decided to copy the new driver, font and icon folders to the <EFI PARTITION> in order to be up-to-date.
After doing so, the rEFInd boot menu had a third icon which said "Boot via \EFI\Boot\Bootx64.efi" and if I clicked on it a second rEFInd boot menu appeared with only the two icons for Windows 7 and Arch.
So I figured I could delete Bootx64.efi and ultimately did so, unfortunately. Afterwards I couldn't boot neither Windows nor Linux anymore.
Following this I went through my noumerous USB boot sticks in order to be able to recover the Bootx64.efi. Unfortunately the first USB stick was a Windows XP one which has the plop bootloader alongside:
    http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/thebootmanager.html
Out of couriousity I entered this bootloader and found HDA and HDB (I assume resembling my SSD and my USB stick).
To my knowledge I didn't change anything but after entering the bootloader again I just found HDA left, HDB seemed to be gone. But I didn't think of anything bad happening yet.
Then I found a working Archiso which I booted and using blkid I couldn't find the partitions of my earlier system anymore, only its device and the USB stick:
    /dev/sda: PTUUID="..." PTTYPE="gpt"
    /dev/sdb1: UUID="..." LABEL="ARCH_201312" TYPE="..." and so on
    /dev/sdb2: SEC_TYPE="msdos" and so on
Even within the EFI shell I could not detect any internal drive anymore (only fs0: which is the USB stick)
Using Archiso onboard tool testdisk I could find the old partitions. The correct result of the GPT from testdisk is:
    Fri Jul 4 08:45:25 2014
    Command line: TestDisk
TestDisk 6.14, Data Recovery Utility, July 2013

Issue resolved If you care to know how, read on:
Looking at the disk using gdisk was doing no good. Neither of the recovery options in gdisk did the trick.
I then returned to testdisk and restored the partitions (successfully). However, afterwards I was greeted by shell telling me the root device was not found (seems like UUIDs get changed when one restores them using testdisk). Adjusting the PARTUUID for root in <EFI SYSTEM PARTIITION>/boot/refind_linux.conf did the trick and I could boot up Archlinux again.
Windows 7 still didn't boot telling me the required device was inaccessible (probably wrong UUID, too). I could however not restore/edit Windows' BCD using bcdedit, see my post Status: 0xc0000225 boot selection failed; required device inaccessible:
To make a long story short: Removing bcd and running autorecovery from withing Windows RE successfully created a new bcd. Unfortunately, Windows writes its backup bootloader at <EFI SYSTEM PARTITION>/boot/EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi. This file originally was a copy of refind_x64.efi which I need to put at that location to be able to dualboot. After chrooting to my Arch system I could restore bootx64.efi, create a new fstab and everything is running fine now again.
Best regards and thanks for the help.

  • Windows 7 / Arch Linux Dual-Boot - win7 keeps changing the boot flag!

    Greetings!
Its been a long while since I had to dual-boot with windows on the same machine.
I 've installed windows 7 and then arch linux and installed GRUB on my sda1 where the /boot partitions is located at.
I've managed to boot into arch successfully and later into windows also successfully.... but when i tried to boot into arch again I wasn't greeted with the typical GRUB boot screen... grub was ignored completely and win7 booting began as if it was the only OS in my hard drive.
I've used the gparted live cd and realized that the boot flag has changed from my /boot partition (sda1) to my windows partition (sda2). I've changed it back and I was able to boot into arch again. but when I rebooted to win7 and then to arch the same thing has happened. The boot flag keeps changing whenever im rebooting into windows making impossible for me to boot with GRUB unles I manually change the flag again.
I haven't installed GRUB into the MBR because I hear  it is a bad practice when you have a windows OS also installed (something with service packs not being able to install, among other things). I also don't want to use the easyBCD method to boot arch using the win7 loader.
here is the partition scheme on my 500gb sata drive :
    /dev/sda1      /boot                 250mb    (primary)
    /dev/sda2      windows 7 ntfs   100gb     (primary)
    /dev/sda3      swap                  4gb        (primary)
    /dev/sda5     /                       16gb        (logical)
    /dev/sda6     /var                   8gb         (logical)
/dev/sda7     /home               the rest of the hd space   (logical)
What am I doing wrong and how do i prevent the boot flag from changing?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

  • Windows 7 and Arch linux dual boot problem

hey guys I had an issue with windows 7 dual booted with arch and i was just wondering my windows 7 crashed. I had Reinstalled windows OS and all my partitions are set up but now when I try to boot up arch I cant at all cause windows Boot took over and i have no way of getting into arch is there anyway i can fix this or maybe reinstall arch without loseing my home folder with all my data, or is there just and easyer way to fix this issue im stuck.  thank you all for your support as i am a noob

You need to re-install grub. When you reinstalled Windows it will overwrite grub preventing you booting Arch. You'll need to boot from a liveCD and chroot into your Arch installation. details for recovering grub are in the wiki - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … stallation

  • Messed up Windows Boot Partition Installing Linux

I have rEFlt installed and I had put the Windows 7 x64 RC on my 13 inch MacBook Pro. I shrunk the partition and installed Ubuntu alongside it and now when I try to boot Windows it tells me there is a corrupt file in the BCD (which is the windows boot sector). I have this problem a lot messing with partitions so I stuck the RC in my computer and booted it and when I tried to access the repair tool it said this computer's install disc doesn't match the Windows installation (it's the exact same disc, I tried the Vista disc too and it gave me the same error). I tried supergrub and it didn't boot into it right so I can never access the right stuff. I was wondering if there's a program I can pull from the internet or something to run in OS X that fixes the BCD. My Ubuntu partition works (sort of, Ubuntu is definitely not meant for Macs) and I tried running ms-sys or something by that name and it wouldn't compile right. I'm out of ideas and I would like to have Windows 7 working...

Figured it out. I have an odd feeling no one would have been able to help me anyway lol

  • [SOLVED] Dualboot w7 + Arch ( where to install grub )

    Hello,
I have win 7 already installed,
now i want to install Archlinux on same disk, but on other partitions.
My currently partiotion schema ( MBR ) looks like:
    /dev/sda1 win7
/dev/sda2 reserverd for linux boot part
    /dev/sda3 reserverd for linux root
I readed beginners guide, and the only one thing is not clear for me,
beginners guide advises not to install grub on any partiorion only on disk's mbr /dev/sda
I can not do that, because it will destroy my win7's mbr( partion table and so on )
Earlier with this configuration i had sabayon linux installed,
with grub on /dev/sda2, both systems booted with bcdedit and all worked fine.
How can I solve this ( grub2 can not be installed in /dev/sdaX )
    Thanks for any help.

I do not know, I felt it so, earlier linux experiences, maybe better I should write "I suppose".
It is not a question of knowing grub. It is a question of knowing Arch. When pacman updates grub, it does not reinstall to disk, it does not generate a new configuration file and it does not, therefore, touch either the MBR or the BIOS boot partition or any installation to a partition or anything else. The most pacman will do is remind you to do these things, as necessary. And sometimes it does not even do that.
This is why, for example, it is possible to maintain grub.cfg manually in Arch but not in most other distros. Because the system will never, ever run grub-mkconfig unless you tell it to. So a manually maintained configuration file will never be overwritten unless you overwrite it.
The only boot manager/loader I know of where this is not the case is gummiboot and IMNSHO, that makes the gummiboot package a badly behaved one which fails to properly respect the local customs. (And I won't install gummiboot for essentially this reason.)
That said, installing grub to a partition is not recommended because it is very easily broken. So I don't think you should do that. I'm just saying that if you did do it, no pacman upgrade would ever write to the MBR. Nor, for that matter, would it update the installation on the partition. It would do zilch to upgrade the actual installation of the boot loader - it would just update the package files in your system.

Then went onto install bootloader [ the hdd was empty so not much work there]
    installed it on /dev/sda
    then rebooted
upon reboot i preformed system update
[pacman -Syu] as the root user
then through pacman installed xorg, gnome, gnome-extra, and alsa-utils
then configed the /etc/rc.conf files [ nano /etc/rc.conf]
and added "hal" and "gdm" to the daemons
    then typed "adduser"
and completed on the required asked for information for adding that user
then went onto /etc/sudoers [nano /etc/sudoers]
    and under,

    wrote,
username ALL = (ALL) + ALL
THEN saved and rebooted. and was happy i was done with my arch linux install!
BUT WHEN I REBOOTED, and went into arch linux through the new bootloader, NOTHING but a BLACK SCREEN, comes up with two little white lines near the top! i even tried booting into the fallback option and its the same black screen with 2 little lines near the top!
    WTF IS GOING ON!

  • Migration to Arch Linux without extra partition requirement

    Hello every body.
I'm currently making somes linux migration distribution, which means, installing on the current root partition Arch Linux and then having the possibility to switch from one to the other one just like you would have 2 distros on separate partitions. As you can imagine it's a interesting challenge. For me it is a must since I do not have any disk free needer want to create any new partitions. Moreover, the all process is possible to be done remotetly.
They is an available detail explaination how I proceed at http://kiao.no-ip.info/depot/arch.
Just be aware it is continuously updated as I'm doing the migration.

Have you looked at the wiki for installing the arch32 bit enviornment on arch64 ?
I think it's basically a decription of what your wanting to do. Even though it was written for just adding a minimal 32 bit install within arch 64, you could use the steps to install a complete sytem within another.

Here in Arch Linux, I find there are 3 options to download                i686 CPU,    x86-64 CPU,    Dual Architecture
Now which one should I download among x86-64 and Dual Architecture?
    Thanks.

Thank you all for welcoming me at Arch Linux!
I was bit worried at the beginning because I tried Fedora before but it has one bug because of which it does not get installed on my laptop.
    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=255943
I was bit disappointed being not able to use Fedora (both 14 and 15 ) because of this bug.
The reason I got worried because I am new to Arch, as I mentioned I am not Linux expert and Arch is not for beginners( though I consider myself intermediate in Linux but certainly not expert). So I thought if I do not get community support probably I will not be able to use Arch Linux. The reason I got interest in Arch Linux is http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process this article. I am not thinking of upgrading my laptop for speed anytime sooner. So I thought of trying Arch Linux.
The reason to post the topic was in most of Linux distros we see two options (x86, AMD_64). I found 3 options at Arch. I just wanted to make sure I am downloading right download.
So I hope I clarified it.

You are right. I should not have have brought experience and credentials in discussion. I used to follow hardware architectures but now I have so many other things to follow, so I can not keep up with hardware architectures. I still do not know exact architecture of i3,i5 or i7 processor or any of AMD processors. Thats how it is.
I thank you all for support.
Looking forward to trying Arch Linux.
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] Enabled AHCI - Arch won't boot

I have switched the SATA preference to AHCI from IDE in the BIOS. Now Arch refuse to boot with following warning:
ERROR: device '/dev/sda2' not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/sda2
    [rootfs /]#
I have checked the WIKI and it has a remedy with 'mkinitcpio'; looks outdated. I have also found about adding one moule to initrd with mkinitrd on the www. However, I am not sure and need some guidance regarding this.
By the way, I dual-boot with Ubuntu and it booted just fine after the switch to AHCI.
    Thanks.

Thanks guys I fixed it from Ubuntu with 'chroot'. I added "ahci" to MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and ran mkinitcpio.
    I can boot Arch now.
Do I have to re-install the kernel? Do I have to add "ahci" to mkinitcpio.conf at every kernel upgrade and run mkinitcpio? Or am I OK.
Out of curiosity, regarding 'fallback image', how is it "even simpler"? Would love to know, for future reference, any pointers?

  • [Solved]Mount windows encrypted partition

    Hi,
I have encrypted the Windows 7 system partition fully using truecrypt. In Linux when i try to mount that partition [/dev/sda1] it says "incorrect password of not a truecrypt partition". I am entering the same password which I use while booting into Windows, that is pre-boot password.:/
Last edited by sHyLoCk (2010-06-15 14:12:53)

Do you use the same truecrypt version on windows and linux? also to be able to mount encrypted systems you have to activate a separate checkbox telling that the partition is using system encryption in truecrypts mount dialog (don't know where exactly it is since I didn't use truecrypt in a while), otherwise it will show the error you mentioned.

  • Can I repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) or Volume Boot Record (aka Windows boot partition) for Windows XP using Windows Vista/7 commands?

I have an SSD drive whose file system is corrupt and unreadable and it's OS of choice is Windows XP SP3 32-bit. I don't have a Windows XP disc.
Is it possible to repair the Master Boot Record (MBR) or Volume Boot Record (VBR) using a Windows Vista or 7 Recovery Disc? What about a Windows PE disc?
I researched around the Internet and found a command in Windows PE called bootsect (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/bios-booting/ht/bootsect-nt60.htm) that can repair both older and new Windows Volume Boot Code (NTLDR or BOOTMGR). The link states that the
bootsect command does NOT fix the MBR. Even the technet site here lists a reference to bootsect and that it can repair the MBR of both old and new versions of Windows (which doesn't appear to be correct). Can I use bootsect to restore the VBR of XP?
If bootsect cannot help me, then what is its purpose? Possible ex: Someone has a dual-boot XP and 7 system, the user uninstalls XP, and then uses bootsect to write BOOTMGR to the VBC.
I would appreciate any insight. Again, I don't have an XP disc. But I do have a WinPE disc and Win 7 Recovery disc and I was hoping I could fix my XP MBR and/or Windows VBR with one of the two.
    Thank you.

    Checked these ?

  • [SOLVED] Help! Arch freezes on boot

I was looking for a login manager today, after trying out qingy and uninstalling it, I rolled back the changes I made to inittab and rebooted.
And then while booting arch freezes after daemon start, after some time it says:
INIT: Id "c1" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "c2" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
INIT: Id "c3" respawing too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I assume it is connected with my inittab setup cause on live cd I watched logs in errors.log and saw this:
