[SOLVED] Emacs Configuration

I wanted to set my Emacs theme the default Emacs theme. So, I removed the line on my init.el that changed the theme. I reopened Emacs and my background was dark (gray), instead of Emacs's default white. Very strange, I thought. After lots of attempts to fix it, I ended up removing .emacs.d/, and completely uninstalling emacs, which removed /usr/share/emacs too. Total wipe out.

That's "locate emacs". ~/.emacs.e/ is just a backup for ~/.emacs.d/, nothing is being loaded from .emacs.e, I'm sure.
Either way, "pacman -R emacs" followed by "pacman -S emacs", and the background is still dark:

I have no idea of what to do. I spent a few hours on this already, it's frustrating me quite a lot.
Any ideas? Thank you so much.

Are you getting any strange output if you are invoking emacs via command line?
Also, what DE/WM are you using? I've had some funny colours in emacs and KDE in the past (that was the old KDE, though).
(Btw, why pacman -R and not pacman -Rs?)
Actually, Emacs isn't outputting a single character to terminal. I am using Openbox, and also tried Awesome WM, it worked the same.
(I didn't know of -Rs, thank you )

  • [solved] Xorg -configuration crashes (signal 11)

I've been trying to get Xorg to work all day without success. What I've been doing:
    * Install archlinux from scratch
    * Upgrade with pacman -Syu
    * Install Xorg
    * Install fglrx
    * Run Xorg -configure.
This is when it crashes with the following output:

If I enable the testing repository and perform a full system upgrade, I can get X to work with the open source drivers for ATI. But I need to get fglrx to work in order to use tv-out. So there seem to be a problem with Xorg itself, not the driver in this case.
    Any ideas?

Well, in your previous log, the crash backtrace:
    Backtrace:

died inside /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so - so I figured if you removed fglrx, Xorg -configure wouldn't try to use that module, and the crash would go away.   I'm glad I guessed right.
Could you please add [solved] to your topic title?

  • [solved] emacs won't start

I'm interested in learning some lisp and it seems like emacs+slime is the way to go (even though I perfer vim).
Seems like there is something weird with my configuration somewhere, because it won't run.
    $>emacs
    emacs: Invalid visual specification `DirectColor'
    $>
I'm not entirely sure what to change, I tried adding "Emacs.visualClass: TrueColor" to /etc/X11/app-defaults/Emacs but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Edit: meh. Forgot that you have to reload the .Xdefaults

I did search. Ok, I suck at choosing the best search terms. I searched again, as you advised, and the answer in this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=89043 did the trick. Apologies for not finding the obvious. And, as always, thanks for the assistance.

  • [SOLVED] Problem configuring DisplayLink monitor (udlfb...)

    SOLVED:
It seems that my monitor shows no green screen when it is ready. Instead it shows the last image rendered. In my case it was this color stripes.
Also, I upgraded to kernel 3.2.1-2, and using the include module udlfb and xf86-video-fbdev from the official repositories I made it work.
I'm struggling to configure a Green House DisplayLink monitor to work with a netbook with an eGalaxTouchscreen. It seems I have problems with udlfb and the DisplayLink driver.
Following this artilce in the wiki, I installed udlfb and xf86-video-fbdev-for-displaylink from the AUR.
    Loading the module with
    # modprobe udlfb fb_defio=1
    does not give any problem:
    dmesg
[ 509.963703] usbcore: registered new interface driver udlfb
Plugging the monitor after loading the driver gives the following output:
    dmesg
[ 637.363419] usb 1-1: new high speed USB device number 6 using ehci_hcd
    [ 637.470050] usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -32

    [ 637.702251] udlfb: allocated 4 65024 byte urbs

[ 637.793145] udlfb: DisplayLink USB device /dev/fb1 attached. 1366x768 resolution. Using 4104K framebuffer memory
But there is no visible change, the screen remains black. Nevertheless, there is a new entry /dev/fb1 as advertised. I followed the steps of the article but I didn't suceed. As I understand, the green screen assures you that udlfb is properly loaded and that the monitor is ready to use.
It seems that it is sadly not my case. Another strange thing is that if I load udlfb, then unload it and load it back again the monitor diplays green, blue, red and yellow stripes. But not the green screen.
I attach my xorg configuration, just in case.

I use my DisplayLink monitor with a netbook. The best I can get at the moment is to use the DL monitor as my primary monitor in a []single monitor setup[]. This means that my netbook's monitor is not used at all (although in my case it is not vital, I would like it to work for watching videos or writing LaTeX code in the smaller screen with a big font size and read the preview in the bigger one).
This is the Xorg file I use:
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
    # DisplayLink Monitor
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "DisplayLink"
    Driver "fbdev"
    BusID "USB"
    Option "fbdev" "/dev/fb1"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Secondary Monitor"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "External Screen"
    Device "DisplayLink"
    Monitor "Secondary Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 16
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1366x768"
    # Virtual 4096 4096
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    # eGalax Touchscreen
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Integrated Graphics Controller"
    Driver "intel"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Primary Monitor"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Internal Screen"
    Device "Integrated Graphics Controller"
    Monitor "Primary Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 16
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1366x768"
    Virtual 2732 768
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    # Dual Monitor configuration
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Dual Head Setup"
    # Screen "Internal Screen"
    # Screen "External Screen" RightOf "Internal Screen"
    Screen "External Screen"
    # Screen "Internal Screen" LeftOf "External Screen"
    # Screen "Internal Screen" LeftOf "External Screen"
    # Option "Xinerama" "on"
    # Option "Clone" "off"
    EndSection
I use xf86-input-fbdev for the DL monitor.
This has one major drawback: I've found no way to make this work dynamically, so I need to move/rename or edit this file whenever I want to change my setup (twice a day in my case). It is not absolutely unbearable but it is an unsatisfactory solution nevertheless.
Also, if I understood correctly, this seems to be a limitation of the current drivers (which include no 3D accel., so no GNOME shell for example). If you find a better way to do it (specially to detect the other monitor dynamically) please let me know.
PS: Sorry for the late response, I was on vacation.

  • [SOLVED] makepkg / configure locks up system

  • [SOLVED] emacs-w3m

I'm probably missing something obvious here, but I've installed both emacs-w3m and w3m, yet can't figure out how to use it!
    I've tried M-x emacs-w3m, M-x w3m and M-x w3m-emacs. How do I run it?
edit: I googled and solved it by adding the following to my ~/.emacs file
    (require 'w3m-load)
    (require 'mime-w3m)
Last edited by Barrucadu (2008-06-26 18:02:56)

Yeah I figured that out when I got back home. It was my own fault for running emacs from Run Program in xfce instead of from the Terminal.
However, I've installed that package along with the 75dpi one and it still doesn't work. I even ran fc-cache again just to be sure. Weird.
The error is "Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct" So perhaps it's a fontconfig problem. Both fontconfig and freetype2 as up-to-date. Hmm.
[EDIT] I restared X and everything worked. Thanks. I've updated the wiki with the information. I'll send a diff to the maintainer at some point; the PKGBUILD should really tell the user that he/she needs to install these fonts if using X windows

I wouldn't mind, but it is not really solved. Today it happened again... I'm analyzing whether some (emacs) package I installed could be the reason for these crashes...

  • [kinda solved] Emacs Sending wrong keystrokes in terminal

So I installed my editor of choice, Emacs, yesterday.  I normally start Emacs with the -nw switch, because most of the time I like using it inside of the terminal window.  When I do this the backspace key doesn't backspace at all, instead it sends <C-h> and takes me to the help screen (very annoying).  BUT, it doesn't do this when I load the graphical emacs, and my backspace key works fine.
    Any help?
    Last edited by lifeafter2am (2009-06-20 03:11:45)

I had a similar problem with xterm. What I had to do was configure xterm such that backspace didn't send C-h so it wouldn't interfere with Emacs while still being able to delete to the left. I forget exactly how I did it, but it's a Xresources/Xdefaults solution.

  • [SOLVED] Emacs `forward-sentence' broken?

    Hello there,
at least for me the behaviour of the `forward-sentence' function (normally bound to M-e) in GNU Emacs doesn't work right.
After pasting the following paragraph to a buffer
wikipedia wrote:Maximilian Karl Emil "Max" Weber was a German sociologist, philosopher, and political economist whose ideas influenced social theory, social research, and the entire discipline of sociology. Weber is often cited, with Émile Durkheim and Karl Marx, as among the three founding architects of sociology.
I place the cursor to the beginning of the paragraph, i.e. just before "Maximilian". Then pressing M-e brings the cursor to the end of the paragraph. But the intended behaviour is to bring the cursor to the end of the first sentence, i.e. after the first "sociology", right before "Weber", isn't it? Is this a bug I should report?
I tried this after starting up emacs by
    $ emacs -Q
    Emacs version 24.3.1

  • [SOLVED] Emacs + rxvt-unicode Cursor Bug

When running emacs inside of a rxvt-unicode terminal, pressing the spacebar advances the cursor as it should, but sometimes it does not erase the cursor from it's previous position.  Entering a third character will finally make this superfluous cursor disappear.
I have found references to similar issues in an Ubuntu bug report and a livejournal post, both of which date back to 2008.  I am not sure if these issues are directly related or just similar in appearance.  I seem to recall having similar issues with the cursor under emacs around three years ago when I was running Ubuntu and gnome-terminal.
Has anyone else noticed this?  It's quite distracting when I'm typing in emacs and I've finally become annoyed enough to get this ball rolling.
    Duplicating the Bug
Open a rxvt-unicode terminal and launch emacs with the following comand:
    emacs -nw
Create a new emacs buffer named "foo".
Switch the buffer "foo" to "text-mode".
Turn on the "visual-line-mode" minor mode.
Type the following into the emacs buffer, replacing <space> with the actual whitespace (i.e. spacebar) character:
    1234<space>1234<space>1234<space>
The third space will advance the cursor but not erase the cursor from its previous position, making it look twice as wide.  Entering a third character will advance the cursor once more, and things will look normal again.
    Failed Workarounds
In my attempt to understand the problem, I have tried a few things which don't seem to help.
Setting the TERM environment variable to various values including "linux", "screen", "vt100", "vt102", etc.
Turning cursor blinking on and off in the rxvt-unicode configuration.
    Successful Workarounds
I have discovered a few workarounds, which may give some clues as to the root of the problem.
If I use rxvt-unicode to launch an instance of Gnu Screen and run emacs inside of that, the problem disappears.
If I run emacs emacs inside of an xterm instead of rxvt-unicode the problem disappears.
If I set column-number-mode in emacs as suggested by the aforementioned livejournal post, the problem will also disappear.

I spoke with someone familiar with rxvt-unicode and got some answers.  It seems that this is likely related to tab characters being output instead of spaces which may be an emacs optimization of some sort.  Turning on the +ptab switch when invoking rxvt-unicode seems to elimnate the issue.  A log of my discussion follows for anyone curious.
< __OoO__ > battlp: emacs outputs a tab character
< __OoO__ > battlp: which is "wide"
< __OoO__ > battlp: so you don't see an extra cursor, just the cursor
    itself is wider
< __OoO__ > battlp: you can probably work around this emacs issue by
    using "+ptab" when strating urxvt
< battlp > __OoO__: interesting. Is this "wide" cursor a unique
feature of urxvt? I've tested all the other terms I can
think of and haven't seen the same thing.
< __OoO__ > any temrinal has this
< __OoO__ > but only urxvt can store tabs
< __OoO__ > thats mostly useful when you want to paste text and want
    tabs intact
< __OoO__ > because other terminals always convert tabs to whitespace
    < __OoO__ > sorry, spaces
< battlp > Not your domain, I know, but any clue why emacs would be
spitting a tab in this plain "text" mode. It seems
    bizarre.
< __OoO__ > tab is both a tab character as you are used to
< __OoO__ > as well as a cursor movement
< __OoO__ > for emacs, it's probably an optimization
< __OoO__ > 9000 cpu cycles wasted to avoid an extra space going over
    your serial line
< __OoO__ > on second thought, its pretty bizarre, because thereis
    only one space
< __OoO__ > but then, can happen if your screen engine it too
    intelligent
< battlp > I also can't predict which spaces will do this. Running
emacs inside of screen eliminates the issue, to, which I
    also don't understand.
< __OoO__ > likely, screen's engine isn't so cool and uses plain old
    spaces or cursor movements
< __OoO__ > which spaces - probably the ones falling directly before a
    tab boundary, i.e. at 7th, 15th etc.
    < __OoO__ > column
< battlp > That sounds like it might be the spots where I'm seeing it.
Turning on emacs' column-number-mode Make it disappear for
the most part, except when backspacing.
< __OoO__ > so will +ptab, which tells urxvt to treat tab as a cursor
    movement only
< battlp > Just tried to measure it with ruler-mode and of course that
    makes it disappear as well.
< battlp > Yep, +ptab makes it go away.

  • [solved]xorg configuration issues, either no mouse or flickering

Hey all, ok well a little while ago I was having trouble with hda-intel and trying to get a decent frame rate on my card, it was never solved, now after an upgrade the problem seems to have solved itself, that is except now it flickers when playing a game.
So I backup up my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and then deleted it, and with startx x works fine and the game doesnt flicker, although without an xorg.conf (I beleive it uses hal?) my netbook's mouse doesn't work.
Placing the backed up xorg.conf back into /etc/X11/ reverses the problem, I have a mouse, but games = flickering.
I am FINALLY getting 55fps on super mario chronicles (my test game).
Here is the relevant lspci output:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
Here is my xorg.conf that allows my mouse to work but gives me flickering, I have tried fiddling around by commenting out various lines and even whole sections but nothing has changed so I reverted the changes:
    http://pastebin.org/85669
I also noted that if I moved /etc/X11/xorg.conf to the current directory and tried to run it, it wouldn't work, this same behavior occured with trying as root, and trying with the conf file generated from X -config although if I then moved the X -config file to /etc/X11 and used startx it would exhibit the same behavior as having no xorg.conf file in /etc/X11
    Thanks again,
    ~Ducky

Thank for that Zack89, problem solved, for those interested I installed the xf86-input-synaptics package and removed my xorg.conf, if you do this make sure you have hal and dbus installed.
To get my touchpad to be 'more' equal in both direction I followed the instruction in man synaptics and at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Synaptics.
After doing cp /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/11-x11-synaptics.fdi /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ I then added the following two lines in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/11-x11-synaptics.fdi
    <merge key="input.x11_options.VertResolution" type="string">57</merge>
    <merge key="input.x11_options.HorizResolution" type="string">57</merge>
The two values are meant to be height and width so that synaptics can scale its calculations accordingly, instead I supplied both values with the width so that I would have even mouse movement.
    Thanks again all,
    ~Chris

  • [SOLVED] Openvpn configuration issues

    Hello,
To better illustrate the following here's an overview of my network:
LAN: 10.0.0.0/24; VPN (shall be): 10.0.2.0/24
Alyx: 10.0.0.1 / 10.0.2.1 (i presume) - Is the router and openvpn server (running Debian 5.0)
Praseodym: 10.0.0.4 / 10.0.2.4 (according to ipp.txt) - Is the client (currently local; may connect from internet eventually) (running Archlinux)
When trying to connect praseodym the tun interface gets created properly (according to ifconfig) but it not only get's sent the wrong adress (10.0.2.6) but also the wrong routes (10.0.2.5 as default gateway)
This of course makes it impossible to ping either alyx or any other host in 10.0.0.0/24
I'm sure i misconfigured somewhere but i just don't manage to actually find the error; any help would be greatly appreciated :-D

Shouldn't the push "redirect-gateway" directive take care of that?
Also I unfortunatly can only test whether I'm able to connect from the outside on saturday.
I'll see if I can get Praseodym to work in my DMZ (that'd be 10.0.1.0/24) later this day though.
    Thanks for the tip :-)
    Edit: Thanks a lot indeed;
Having Praseodym be 10.0.1.2 (alyx being 10.0.1.1 in the dmz) actually solved the problems i've been having (for local connectivity that is; i can't really know if it's working unless i test it from the web)

  • [solved] Emacs in X windows - Characters are not displayed

Emacs works fine when run with -nw.
But when I run it without, in X Windows, emacs does not display characters properly. It just displays those whites boxes with the black borders. The ones you see when you're trying to view characters for which you don't have the right font.
I installed XEmacs, and that worked fine. I don't understand why the normal Emacs doesn't.
I'll post a screenshot when I'm home from work, but you should get the gist of the problem.

  • [SOLVED] emacs - gtkfilechooser

All of a sudden I am getting a very strange message on opening files for emacs.
(emacs:4970): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to read filechooser settings from
    "/home/wpt/.config/gtk-2.0/gtkfilechooser.ini": Permission denied
I installed the templates package for emacs, and originally if I changed the mode to "latex-mode" the appropriate item would show up in the file list (new file using template). That no longer happens. If I open emacs and enter the name of a stub.tex file I created(which is empty), the template message does not appear.
If I open emacs from a terminal with the stub.tex file, the template message does appear in the file menu, but the above Gtk-WARNING message is displayed.
If this is a permission issue, how do I change it?
EDIT: Mysteriously, the error message has disappeared. BUT I still cannot access the menu item: "New File Using Template" from within emacs -- only if I load the empty stub.tex file from the command line or the pcman file manager.
EDIT: Spoke too soon. error message is back.
EDIT: There are two items that have to be added to ~/.emacs to make the template package work: (1) require 'template, and (2) template-initialize. I simply moved both to the bottom of the ~/.emacs file, and the error was corrected. Now the listing in the File menu shows: "New File Using Template" upon opening.

  • (SOLVED) Tvheadend: Configuration lost on reboot

    Hello.
I managed to configure Tvheadend on my computer and it works great.
My problem is when the computer restarts: For some reason the settings are lost on reboot and I have to configure everything again every time when I turn the computer on.
I save the changes when the program is configurated but the computer loses the settings at start.
    Please, help me.

I configured the program from the web interface and I can see the TV channels and the EPG information even from other computers on my network but curiously the program does not create the folder you mention,
I do not know why that folder is not created and I do not know where it saves the data.
The .hts folder does not appear anywhere in my home directory: It is not in ~/.hts  and is not in ~/.config/.hts or similar places.
Should I create  ~/.hts/tvheadend  manually? If so, what should I put in that file?
Excuse me for my deficient english.
