[solved] Fail safe backup of my Arch setup
I've configured my Arch setup to its best in terms of both performance and usability. I am really liking it and want to keep a back up of this installation. From backup I mean to keep track of all the tools I have installed and the confugurations like my console fonts, workspaces settings etc...
One option is to make a custom shell script. This will be very hectic and unmanagable. I might forget some configuration etc. to save. I believe there must be some tool to backup whole installation.
PS: There is something as Ghost backup. But I am not looking onto that, because It will backup current disk as it is. Which won't be useful if am restoring after say 1 yr. When lot of packages would have been updated or outdated. Instead I am looking something like a script, which will turn a fresh Arch installation into a full configured system pulling latest packages.

I don't know of any tool that does this automatically, but I myself just keep backups of all the files that isn't vanilla i.e. which i've made changes to, like dot-files and other configs in /etc and such. I backup them onto my free dropbox account, so that I can get to the files from anywhere with it's public links afterwards.
Then I have made a script that makes a clean install and then also downloads and places back all the custom files of my system, so everything will be back to where it used to be before...
It takes maybe alittle time to make such a script, but imho it's very nice to have, so that you know that if something completelly breaks, then you can easilly recover without much effort other than booting from the Arch LiveCD, wget'ing your custom install/setup script from dropbox and then fire it up with 'bash ./setup' and then you're all god.
Just use a VM to test the script out so as to narrow down on possible issues and troubleshoot them...
Btw, if using dropbox to store config-files and such, then there's a nice bash-script named dropbox-uploader.sh, which lets you upload/download files to/from dropbox from a terminal and without the need of having to install/use the dropbox daemon...
You can e.g. also make another script which backs up your changed configs to e.g. dropbox, and then add the script as a cron-job so as to automate the backup operation...

Can Time Capsule be part of a FAIL-SAFE backup system???
You've all heard it said...Don't put all your eggs in one basket. In this case I'd be putting all my data in a $499 basket!
Can anyone help me determine if Time Capsule can be utilized with any type of redundency program?
Would .Mac be a solution, or an external HD connected to TC??? It appears that there is no extented warranty for this device!

Message was edited by: sajawebbThere are all sorts of alternative backup strategies you can use. Which one you use depends on how important your data really is, how much money you want to invest in a solution, and what would take to satisfy your own personal measure of "safety".
A good start would be to do a second backup to another media - like .Mac or an external hard drive cabled to your Mac. If you use an external hard drive, store it off site at a different location from where your Mac is location. If you want to improve redundancy even further, do a complete backup of your hard drive to two different external drives, and use each drive on alternating days or weeks.
Like all Apple peripherals, TimeCapsule is covered by AppleCare if you purchase it at the same time you buy a Mac. -
[SOLVED] Luks with /arch/setup installation , fails at boot
Hi all,
So I tried to install arch on virtualbox with encrypted partitions (root /, /home/ and swap), but it fails at boot.
/dev/sda1 is /boot
/dev/sda2 is swap
/dev/sda3 is /
/dev/sda4 is /home
The root partition seems to be loading fine because it asks for my password, then the boot sequence goes on, until the /home/ (apparently) :
:: Bringing up loopback interface
:: Unlocking encrypted volumes: chome..Usage: cryptsetup [-?vyrq] (...all the options...can't copy paste with virtualbox)
/sbin/cryptsetup: Unknown action
failed [FAIL]
/dev/mapper/croot: clean, 27576/457856 files, 166316/1830898 blocks
fsck.ext4: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/mapper/chome
Possibly non-existent device?
/dev/sda1: clean,29/24096 files, 20790/96356 blocks
[FAIL]
It seems that it tries to open /dev/mapper/chome but it's not mounted yet
In my /etc/crypttab, I added the lines :
chome /dev/sda4 none luks
cswap /dev/sda2 none luks
/etc/fstab (I didn't change anything, /arch/setup configured it that way) :
/dev/mapper/chome /home ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/mapper/croot / ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/mapper/cswap swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
And grub :
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/mapper/croot cryptdevice=/dev/sda3:croot ro
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
What I wanted to do was to have swap, root and home encrypted partitions mounted at boot, but maybe it is not possible?
I tried a lot of configurations for /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab according to what I could find on the net but nothing worked. I read the whole tutorial https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _with_LUKS but there is no config for fstab or crypttab or grub when installing with /arch/setup
Thanks for any help !

There is a good alternative though: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _a_Keyfile
the reason why you don't have a passphrase for root in a file somewhere is that you provide this passphrase during boot-time.
Somewhere during boot you get the option to unlock you root device by typing in a passphrase... right?

RMAN Automatic backup/recovery with oracle fail safe, windows cluster
Hello,
I have question,
1) Whether it is possible to do "RMAN Automatic Backup and recovery" in environment as ?
Environment: -
a. Windows clustering with windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 (Two Node Clustering)
b. Shared disk ( RAID )
c. Oracle 10g standard edition one
d. Oracle fail safe v3.3.3 (for redundancy)
Here we have single oracle instance operating on single database whose files are located on shared disk.
2) If answer to above question is yes please specify if there is some good documentation to it.
Any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
RahulYou just need to make sure that the RMAN scripts are always able to connect to the target database instance whether instance runs on cluster node 1 or cluster node 2
here, If oracle services(resources) will shift from Node1 to Node2 (due to media or any failure) during RMAN Backup then there will be break in connection, will it destroy my backup or will it get started automatically without any harm?
and also I want to know,
Do we need to setup another server which will have RMAN backup script running? -
Cold backup restore on fail safe environment.
Hi,
The setup:
Windows 2008 with 2 node MSCS cluster in active/passive configuration.
Oracle Database 11.1.0.6 .
Oracle Failsafe 3.4.2
Database :test database; 2 in no. ,both Single instance. Both database are created with cold backup from production.
The Requirement:
To refresh both the test database with cold backup from the same production database as before. And then with the same cold backup create a physical standby database of the newly recreated testing database.
The Plan:
1.take all dbfile, controlfile, redologfiles, standbyredologfiles, tempfiles backup from production.
2.after taking the testing database offline from failsafe and normaly starting on node1; restore dbfile, controlfiles, redologs, srl, tempfiles to testing server. spfile should be properly pointing the new controlfile.
3.startup mount.
4.directory structure for control, redo, srl, dbfiles, tempfiles are diffrent.so,rename file for all dbfiles, redologs, srl, tempfiles.
5.creating a standby controlfile for creating physical standby db of this testing database.
6.open the database.
7.shutdown immediate.
8.start with failsafe.
The doubt:
1. is this plan ok for refresh of the test databases?
2. with the backup taken at step1 and standby ctl file created at step 5 can i create a physical standby database of the testing db?
Please note, the production database is only in picture while taking backup.
Please guys help me for clearing the said doubts.
regards.
gThe doubt:
1. is this plan ok for refresh of the test databases?
2. with the backup taken at step1 and standby ctl file created at step 5 can i create a physical standby database of the testing db?
Please note, the production database is only in picture while taking backup. You are taking cold backup, So the mentioned procedure you can follow. But ensure all the services/background processes related to database are not running.
Once you prepare Primary database, even from that database you can create standby control file, so that it will be used for standby database.
But i'm not aware of how fail safe it works, As per the core database part whatever the steps you mentioned, it looks fine.
Thank You. -

Fail Safe Cluster Verify Error
Hi There,
I have installed Fail Safe (version 3.4.2 64 bit) on a windows 2008 server 64bit cluster. The software installs ok; when I try to launch Fail Safe Manager we get the following:
Failed to update the system registry.
Please try using REGEDIT.
We can pass through that by clicking ok.. We add the cluster Alias, we enter all the required details and then we get to the Cluster Verify screen which is causing the issue here, when we click on cluster verify button we get the following error:

Your help is highly appreciated.
ThanksWe managed to solve this and now the cluster verification completes successfully.
The solution is to turn off windows firewall. Once that was turned off for both clustered nodes, the verification completes with no issues.
Some side notes for people installing this (not new for most of you, but certainly was for me and it's helpfull to know):
1. Turn off windows firewall (and/or any firewall) on both nodes.
2. Windows hosts file should have the DNS and IPs entries for all nodes as well as the cluster (this will eliminate warning messages when running the verify cluster).
3. FailSafe SHOULD BE installed under a domain user account that have admin prives. Even though the oracle database software (or any other oracle software) might be installed under a local oracle user with admin prives on teh server, however this does not work for failsafe and you won't be able to proceed with the failsafe installation. Make sure the actual FailSafe installation is done under a domain user that have domain admin prives. -
Time Machine fails to backup home space.
Summary:
I've been having problems with Time Machine since I enabled it. For some reason it refuses to backup any file in my account (/Users/ritchiem/). I have spoken with the an Apple 'Genius' and they were dumb founded. So I ask here in the hope that someone has had this issue occur and know what the cause is and how to fix it. I'm not really looking for work-arounds, though I will cover that later.
*Problem Description:*
A new 500GB external drive was erased and formatted HFS+ Journaled.
TimeMachine was then opened and enabled on this drive.
Back Up Now was selected and left to run assuming it would take a while on the 500Gb internal drive that had a around 200Gi-250Gi of used.
It ran successfully.
When entering TimeMachine, history shows the top level drive and navigating down the Users folder shows only my 'test' user account. My user account 'ritchiem' is not listed.
There was no error presented from Time Machine an the System Preferences panel reported it was successful.
Console.logs shows that backup was performed successfully.
Steps already taken to address issue:
I have verified/repaired permissions on my boot drive, a few files were changed but none in /Users/ritchiem
I have deleted the Time Machine preferences: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I have tried a second external hard drive, in this case it was more interesting:
It was reported as being to small to perform the backup. So I added some exclusions such as my large iTunes library.
This allowed the Time Machine to proceed but again there was no backup performed of any file in home space.
This is where I thought I must be doing something wrong and went to the Apple Store the genius tried all the usual suspects, permissions, preferences. But no success.
It was only then that one of his colleagues picked up on discussion that it was only my user that was being skipped and suggested the risky move of renaming my user. He showed me the 'Advanced' panel in the Account System Preferences. (I never realised you could use a nice gui to do the renaming of a user in all the right Apple places.)
So I swapped users and renamed my account, and moved my home space to a new user name. mv /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin
I then logged back in to my account to verify the rename all worked and it had.
_*Time Machine now worked!*_
HOWEVER, that is a total hack. I use the username 'ritchiem' all across my local network and it was not recommended to have a user ritchiem but a home space in /Users/martin.
I renamed my account back to 'ritchiem' and Time Machine again is blocking backups of /Users/ritchiem
Somewhere on my drive there MUST be an exclusion that is preventing the first user that I created on my 2008 MacBook from being backed up. So far my grep-ing of the filesystem for 'ritchiem' has not shown any likely suspects. If anyone here knows where the mystic plist/file is that I need to zap then that would be great.
If of course you have another work-around that does not require me to rename either my account or my home space then that would be great.
Oh and I also tried to trick TimeMachine by creating a symbolic link in /Users to my home space (ln -s /Users/ritchiem /Users/martin). It resolves the link and refuses to backup the contents of my home space just as before.
Please remember here that in all backups that Time Machine performed there was no error, console.log and the UI all report success.
Now if I had a new blank machine and some time I could test out the theory that it is always the first user of a freshly installed machine. However, if other people have it working then it is perhaps not that simple.
TIA
MartinThank you for all your advice and suggestions. Apologies for the delay I had difficulty locating my original install DVDs.
Summary
I have performed all the steps and checked items as requested however backups are still not including my home space (/Users/ritchiem)
What I do find interesting is the output of the TimeMachine backup log (at the very end of this VERY long post) which states that 84.8 GB should be backed up but only 24.3 GB is actually backed up.
Would love to know why TM decided 60.5GB of data should not be backed up but not explained in any of the log files and a successful backup reported.
Before I go on to the details of what i've done, I should also mention in case it is important that I have of course been logged in with my user (ritchiem) whilst performing all of these backups. I assume that is normal and that you shouldn't have to log out for TM to actually backup your data. To verify this previously I have logged out user ritchiem and logged in as a test account. The path /Users/ritchiem still failed to backup. I have not tried this recently, however, I would be really surprised if you had to log out of your user account for the data to be backed up.
Detail
So to answer V.K. first: My drive did indeed have some items that it said I should repair. Hence the search for the install DVDs. I ran the Disk Utility from the Leopard installer and it repaired the drive. The verify now runs green.
As I had just rebooted the machine and it was all fresh I repeated Pondini's previous steps as well.
* Disabled TM
* Exited System Preferences
* Deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
I then also deleted the Backups.backupdb from my external drive so everything was fresh and new. I would have just formatted it (which would have been waaay faster, but I have some copies as backups on there for now.)
I started the TM prefs panel and added a few items to the disabled list to a) speed up the backup but also b) I have a 320g internal drive and only a 250g external. My total disk usage is 288 which won't fit, especially with the breathing space TM likes to have.
Here is the data from console.log from the first two backup runs:

*Other Steps*
Whilst running TM I also setup dtrace to log every file open: (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071031121823710)
Looking for any files in my home space that it might have opened returned none:
ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/ritchiem" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
0
Yet looking for all the files backed up from the /Users directory there were 458!
ramaII:~ ritchiem$ grep "/Users/" tm.dtrace |grep "entry backupd" |wc -l
458
Dtrace also highlights the files that backupd uses unfortuately the only files it opened before it started its backup were:

*Next Steps*
I've been thinking about what i could try next and not having many ideas. So I'm really hoping someone here will have a flash of inspiration.
If I find some time at the weekend then I will try renaming my account again and verifying that it does backup under a new name.
Just incase there is something odd about the first user account created, i.e. UID:501 I will make a new 'ritchiem' account (which will have the next UID, UID:504) and see if that gets backed up, I can try this while my current account has been renamed. If that does work then I can copy my files back in to that account and verify it isn't something in my home directory that is upsetting TM. Although I doubt this is the case as it never read any files from home space during the backup process.
Here's hoping there is something in the above logs etc, that give a clue to what might be going wrong.
Cheers

Enterprise Manager Grid Control - Version: 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3
Information in this document applies to any platform.
Goal
The goal of the document is to provide the steps to configure the DB Console in an Oracle Failsafe environment.
Please note that the solution offered in this document is not certified by Oracle. It's only provided as a workaround for customers who wish to use this setup for the Database Control Console in a failsafe environment. Support for the procedure outlined in this document will be provided on a 'best efforts' approach.
As an alternative to this approach you can use Grid Control Agents to monitor a database in a failsafe environment. For more details please see:
Note 396659.1 How To Setup Grid Control Central Agent Manually in Oracle Failsafe Environment
We assume the following:
- the database binaries are installed on each node on the local disk
- you already have a failsafe group with the database, the listener, disk resource, and virtual
ip/hostname
Note: This is specific for Windows environments using Oracle Failsafe. For setting up the DB Console in Active/Passive clusters on UNIX please use the following note instead:
Note 362524.1 Configure DB Control 10.2 for use in Active/Passive High Availability Environments
Solution
1. Drop the DB Control repository and configuration files on the active node:
<ORACLE_HOME>/bin/emca -deconfig dbcontrol db -repos drop
2. Recreate the DB Control using the virtual hostname:
- in a command window do the following:
set oracle_sid=<your_sid>
set oracle_home=<your_oracle_home>
set oracle_hostname=<virtual_hostname>
cd %oracle_home%\bin
emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create
-- make sure that the virtual host name was picked up by emca (it will display a summary screen
before continuing)
3. Verify that the DB Console works fine and can be accessed using the virtual host name in the URL
4. Stop the DB Console
5. Create a directory path on the group disk resource similar to your oracle home path on the local disk.
For example:
If the oracle home on the local disk is C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1 and the shared disk is D:
then create the following path: D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1
Copy C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\<hostname_sid> and
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\oc4j\j2ee\OC4J_DBConsole_<hostname_sid>
to D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\<hostname_sid> and respectively
D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\oc4j\j2ee\OC4J_DBConsole_<hostname_sid>
Remember to change the values enclosed in <> with those in your environment.
6. Delete the following directories from the local disk
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\<hostname_sid>
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\oc4j\j2ee\OC4J_DBConsole_<hostname_sid>
7. Create NTFS junction points from the local disk to the shared disk (these work like symbolic
links on UNIX) . It is your responsibility to create these.
You can find a brief guide as well as some tools that will help you create them at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS_junction_point
http://www.microsoft.com/technet ... dDisk/Junction.mspx
Important: Please note that this functionality is not certified nor supported by Oracle. Make sure you understand the
implications. Especially don't delete the junction points from Windows Explorer !!
In the end you should have the junction points on the local disk (with the same names as the
original directories) that would point to the directories you copied on the shared disk.
8. Start the DB Console service and verify that everything is still working fine.
9. Stop the DB Console service.
10. Move the Fail Safe group to the 2nd node.
11. Once the database is started, create the DB Console configuration files on the 2nd node:
<ORACLE_HOME>/bin/emca -config dbcontrol db
12. Stop the DB Console
13. Delete the created configuration files from the local disk:
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\<hostname_sid>
C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\oc4j\j2ee\OC4J_DBConsole_<hostname_sid>
14. Create junction points from the local disk to the directories already located on the shared
disk.
15. Start the DB Console service and verify that is working fine.
16. Add the DB Console service as a resource to the fail safe group and put dependencies on the
database and listener services.
17. Perform a fail over and see if everything works fine.

Setting up encryption on an already installed Arch setup?
Recently I have been thinking about setting up encryption on my already installed Arch setup. I would reinstall and encrypt it that way, however I do not have an external HDD big enough to back up everything, so I was wondering if it is possible to encrypt a hard disk on an already installed Arch setup. I have two partitions, /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2, and would like to encrypt both while not having to reinstall.
Can anyone help? Thanks!
Edit:
Alternatively, could I reinstall it and use encryption in the install in such a way that it retains my file contents?
Last edited by ThatPerson (2013-07-30 12:41:13)I use rsync rather than tar to do what Stebalien is suggesting here. I use btrfs, and my root filesystem is actually a subvolume. So I mount the entire btrfs filesystem (from subvolid=0) at /var/lib/btrfs-root. By doing this, it makes it much easier to simply rsync (or tar) from that mountpoint to the backup mountpoint. This makes it so that I can actually backup the system I am running off of without explicitly excluding all the volatile directories (like /sys, /tmp, /proc, etc.) Though I think a more sane approach, since I use btrfs, would be to snapshot each subvol and rsync those instead.
I guess what I am trying to get at, is that if you were to create something like /mnt/system and /mnt/backup. If you mounted your rootfs to /mnt/system (and then possibly your home partition to /mnt/system/home), then mount the backup destination to /mnt/backup, you could simply do something like:
# rsync -aAXv /mnt/system/* /mnt/backup
Then of course you would have to put it all back after you set up Luks/dmcrypt.
This installation I use has been through a few different drives and trying and removing Luks/dmcrypt. I have also changed filesystems, switched to LVM2, tried mdadm RAID0, mdadm RAID1, and eventually went back to btrfs. So as mentioned above, there is really no need to reinstall just to change the underlying layout of the HDD/SSD. Of course this assumes that you have a spare drive with the space to copy your entire filesystem to... but then you should have backups anyway, right? -
Hi,
I need to upgrade from oracle 10.2.0.1 (base) to 10.4.0.4 in a fail-safe cluster.
Questions:
1.If I upgrade each node as a alone server, ¿fail-safe cluster can run with 2 nodes in diferent versions? (for example one week, for rollback )
2. I have read how to upgrade a fail-safe cluster metalink document. Please, can somebody tell me the best form (or logical) to upgrade from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4 in this cluster?
for example:
1. Backup database
2. Upgrade node 1 to 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4 (following metalink document)
3. Test database and applications
4. One week later the same in node 2 (only if it is possibly run oracle in different versions in failsafe, if not, install node 2 after node 1 works fine)
It´s my first failsafe environment, and i´m not sure how to do it.
Thanks a lot for your help!!!Welcome to the forums !
Pl see if MOS Doc 223709.1 (How to upgrade or apply a patch to the RDBMS in an Oracle Fail Safe environment) can help. I have no personal experience with Fail Safe.

TM fails to Backup certain files - Error: (-41) SrcErr:NO Copying
Hi,
TM fails to backup certain files and I have no idea how to fix it. This is the error log:
Oct 27 23:19:45 Mac com.apple.backupd[1899]: Error: (-41) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/gretch/Documents/Software/Airfoil 3.2.1/Airfoil.app/Contents/MacOS/Airfoil Video Player.app/Contents/Frameworks/Protein.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Sparkle. framework/Versions/A/Resources/en.lproj/Sparkle.strings to /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/CiMac/2009-10-27-223307.inProgress/285F31F4-3FD2-40A2- AD5E-DFBF8A42087A/Macintosh HD/Users/gretch/Documents/Software/Airfoil 3.2.1/Airfoil.app/Contents/MacOS/Airfoil Video Player.app/Contents/Frameworks/Protein.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Sparkle. framework/Versions/A/Resources/en.lproj
I am using a WD external HD with USB and have formatted it correctly according to Apples recommendation: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US
If I delete the file that gave an error, next time I backup TM continues to backup successfully until it reaches another file and gives the same error.
I suspect it may have something to do with permissions, but obviously I have repaired the permissions and nothing changes.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?
Thanks
OS 10.6.1I've had similar problems and would love to know how to resolve this problem...
Previously clients were bound to AD with ADMitMac running 10.5.8 using Time Machine and everything is great for months...
Upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and uninstall ADMitMac and bind the clients to AD using built in Active Directory Plug-in. Everything works great except that Time Machine fails on all three computers which were upgraded. Here's what I've tried to solve the problem:
1) Went into TM preferences and under "Select Disk..." set it to "None" and told TM to "Stop Backing Up" to turn TM off.
2) Went into /Library/Preferences and deleted the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file.
3) Launched Disk Utility and reformatted the backup drive using a different name and made sure that it was formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
4) When it finished it's format it prompted me to set as Time Machine Backup Disk which I did.
At this point the backup runs backs up about half the drive and then I get the following types of errors in the Time Machine Logs...
Time Machine errors from the current System log (according to TM Error Logger):

No successful backups reported in the current log
I can rule out a couple of different things... This occurs on two MacBook Pros and a MacPro Tower. The MacPro has a second internal drive and the two laptops have external drives connected via FW800. The two laptops are using different models of LaCie drives. So it's not model specific or something related to the type of drives or connections being used.
I've repaired permissions on the source and target drives and run Disk Warrior 4.2 on them as well. I've tried running the time machine backup as a local administrator account in case it was a problem with their mobile user accounts with the same results. After doing the upgrade I had rebuilt the user's mobile accounts and in doing so did a recursive chown (sudo chown -R user:group "user's home folder") so there shouldn't be a permissions issue with these files anyway.
So it's something to do with the data that TM is attempting to copy, but if it's not permissions then what is it? I don't believe that this data just became corrupted all of the sudden as TM was able to backup all this same data under 10.5.8 only hours before the snow leopard upgrade.
My experience with Snow Leopard has been pretty good so far, but I'm seeing some serious inconsistencies with file permissions and I think this is what is causing this problem. I'm guessing it's something to do with ACLs going wonky, but insofar I've been unable to find and fix the problem. -
[Solved] Boot process hangs for installed Arch and installation usb
Hi. I've been using Arch Linux for around 6 months now and I'm in love with it. It is now my primary OS. However, I might have done something or performed some update, and I can no longer boot into Arch. The boot process hangs right before it should show the login screen (I'm using Gnome 3.6 with GDM). I see the following messages on the screen:
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...
/dev/sda3: recovering journal
/dev/sda3: clean, 330610/1749664 files, 5585671/6996827 blocks
And then it hangs right there. I have to hard-reboot after this.
I then tried to boot using the Arch Linux Installation USB (archlinux-2012.12.01-dual.img), which also hangs at a particular point, before it should show me the prompt. I took a picture of the screen where it hangs: Screen Capture. This is an issue with just my laptop, because the USB boots just fine on another laptop I tried.
I also have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 installed on my system, and I'm able to boot into both of them.
I have 2 hard drives: /dev/sda is a 120GB SSD, and /dev/sdb is a 500GB hard disk. My partitions are as follows:
sda1 - Windows 7 100MB System Reserved Partition (boot flag enabled)
sda2 - Windows 7 OS
sda3 - ArchLinux (boot flag enabled)
sdb1 - Ubuntu 12.10 (boot flag enabled)
sdb2 - Just data

I tried adding nomodeset and acpi=off to the boot parameters, but the boot process still hangs. Please let me know if I should provide any other information.
Last edited by dhavalparmar (2012-12-30 11:45:25)Ok.. So my Arch Linux randomly decided to work. I'm sure I didn't do anything between my last "not working" state and my current "working" state. Below are a few things I tried:
I thought of trying an earlier build of ArchLinux, and downloaded archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso and made a bootable USB out of it. It still hung.
I was getting error messages during Arch boot that the last access time for the disks was at a future date. I found out that Ubuntu was using localtime instead of UTC and screwing up my hardware clock. I fixed it, and thought maybe the time issues were causing the boot problem. But fixing time didn't solve my problem.
I chrooted into Arch from my Ubuntu install, ran 'sudo pacman -Syyu' and updated my Arch install.
I thought maybe GDM isn't starting up. I re-enabled the service using 'systemctl enable gdm.service'.
I removed OpenNTPd and installed NTPd. Enabled the daemon using 'systemctl enable ntpd'
None of the above solved the problem, and rebooting to Arch still hung the system. So I stopped fiddling with it yesterday. Today, as usual, I just tried logging into Arch.. And it just worked out of the blue. The solution to me is as mysterious as the problem.
I told this to my friend who introduced me to Arch, and this is what he said:
Damn it computers, you were supposed to be deterministic! -

Hi all,
We have oracle fail-safe setup on oracle 10G windows 64-bit. we need to add one more instance(database) to the existing fail-safe. I have no idea how can i do it and not able to find any relevant documentation.
Appreciate if you can help me. this is very very urgent please help
Thanks in advance.

AijazThe main failsafe download page is here:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/failsafe/index.html
The documentation for failsafe is here:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/failsafe.html
The documentation provides excellent step by step instructions about adding a new database to a failsafe configuration.
Hope this helps you. -
Hi,
We have to use Oracle fail safe in our environment (windows server 2003 R2 64 bit with Oracle 10g 64 bit).
Please if anybody have doc for this please provide and which version will be compatible.
Regs,
BrijeshHi Brijesh,
I used Oracle fail safe for Oracle AS 10GR2 and for Oracle 9iR2 Active / Passive cluster. Most of the documentation is provided by Oracle, and yes it helped me a lot to configure the setup. The links provided by Helios are sufficient for this.
May be you should refer this Doc as well from Oracle Metalink - Oracle Support
1) "Oracle Fail Safe Frequently Asked Questions : General Doc ID: Note:60787.1 "
2) "Oracle Fail Safe Step-By-Step Installation and Configuration Doc ID: Note:74009.1"
Cheers
