[SOLVED] Frustrating mouse behaviour

Hey guys
I'm having a problem with my mouse interactions on my desktop. I'm running 64-bit arch with Openbox, tint2, cairo-compmgr, gmrun and conky.
I can consistently reproduce the following problem:
Fire up Chromium, and open two tabs with web pages. Click on one of the tabs (to switch tabs), and move the mouse down into the body of the webpage. The cursor no longer responds to changes in the context (ie it never switches from cursor to hand for links, or the text selection tool for text), and left-clicking or middle-clicking is totally fruitless (ie nothing happens). If I use the scroll wheel in this state, then chromium scrolls through the list of available tabs instead of the web page (remember, my cursor is off the tab bar and in the page at this time) To get "back" my cursor, I have to right-click somewhere in the web page and then cursor control resumes as normal.
Other programs show even worse behaviour, for example tintwizard. If I try to select the font for tint2 (using the wizard), I can't use the mouse to interact with the font dialog (separate window) at all - I have to use the escape key to cancel the dialog.
The programs listed aren't the only ones showing problems, they're just the ones I can report a consistent problem for. Others are so frustrating I can't even begin to describe what's going on (aside from "my mouse is driving me insane")
This problem was vexing me on my previous setup (fluxbox), which is why I "burned down" my system (complete uninstall of X11 and all graphical systems) and then rebuilt it, but the problem has followed me apparently.
I've checked over my Xorg.0.log file and there's no errors or warnings related to my mouse or input devices. My mouse for fluxbox was an MX1000, I'm now using a Saitek RAT7 for openbox and the problem is persisting, so I think this isn't a hardware issue.
Could someone help me out with this one? Without any error messages or leads to follow up on, I think my only way out at this time might be a complete reinstall of my OS.

Weird problem. Some ideas:
- Did it start after some update or change? if so use the pacman logs to determine which update was the culprit and downgrade it
- Do you use any custom xorg settings, or some custom  HAL policies in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ (depreciated btw)? Try setting it all to default
- Comb through the other logs with my error combing script
- Perhaps helping in isolating the problem is the 'xev' commandline app. With this you can check if (and which) keyboard/mouse events are are registered.
- Does it also occur with a fresh home folder, I.e. is it caused by some setting in your homefolder?

  • LV 8.2 mouse behaviour oddities and annoyances ...

I'm seeing some strange behaviour in LV 8.2 when using the mouse: (Windows 2000 and XP).
    Try this:
Switch to a block diagram (any one will do)
Spin the scroll wheel a few times
Click and drag to draw a selection box
When I do this, the mouse cursor is not lined up with the box:
It appears to be offset vertically by the same distance which I scrolled.  Interestingly though, the selection actually behaves normally - the visible box is not the box used for the actual selection:
This also happens horizontally if I hold the mouse over the horizontal scroll bar and spin the wheel (hope everyone already knew this trick )
Does this happen on other platforms?  It doesn't appear to happen on the front panel.
I must admit to being rather frustrated with the changes made to the mouse behaviour with every new release.  It's usually subtle, but it's very frustrating when you work with LV every day and get totally used to its quirks (and even appreciate them in some cases), only to have it all change with the next release.  For instance, in 8.2 it seems any time you click on a resize handle, the object shrinks - even if you don't move the mouse (I use a track ball, so this is easy to do for me).  I use this technique to check the size of things all the time, and it's very annoying to have to undo something I never actually did.
Also (and this is probably related), there is actually what I would call a bug when you do resize things.  Try this:
Drop a rectangular decoration on a front panel (or anything resizable)
Click on one of the resize handles, but don't move the mouse at all - note the size in the pop up tip strip
Move the mouse 1 pixel in a direction that would enlarge the decoration.  The object actually gets smaller!
Perhaps there is some good reason for this, but given that it's a totally different behaviour than in older versions, was it really a compelling enough reason to change it???
Sorry, just a little morning venting ...
... looking forward to 8.2.1 so I can get back to enjoying LabVIEW,

Of course.  In fact I'm only using 8.2 because we are really keen to use Projects, XControls, LVOOP classes, etc., along with some bug fixes (most notably this one).  You're right though, I have been very "lucky" since starting with 8.2.  I can't take much credit though - all I've done so far is port our big (~2500 VIs) project to 8.2 and work out the kinks, along with checking out XControls.
Hopefully I haven't given the impression I'm seriously angry or upset  .  I'm still a big LabVIEW fan, and NI is definitely one of the best companies out there in terms of support ... (I'll be expecting my cheque in the mail shortly )

  • Please explain mouse behaviour to a switcher...

Having recently switched from PC's, I am having difficulty understanding the peculiarities of Mac mouse behaviour. When surfing, and in particular when I am on my banking website, running the cursor over links often does not highlight them. I sometimes move the mouse away from the page and click, then retry the links. Sometimes this works, other times I must navigate completely away from the page I'm trying to view and then come back to it. I have a laptop PC and never experience this on it. I suspect it is something peculiar to the Mac, or Safari. It's not the website, as it works fine with the PC. This is starting to drive me crazy! For the record, I have a 20" and 24" Imac, intel processors, 2gb ram each, and all the latest upgrades. Oh, and an Apple Mighty Mouse. Thanks in advance!!

    Hi
From your description, it sounds like the site coding is the culprit, rather than Safari or OS X. Have you seen this problem with other sites? On other browsers on your Mac, such as Firefox.
On the Mac platform, you are going to see coding inconsistencies and incompatibility issues on the web biased to the Windows platform. Apple/Safari adheres to coding standards promulgated by the Web Standards Organization. This organization is dedicated to maintaining consistency and integrity in site coding practices. If the problem seems specific to your banking site, consider contacting the site developer.

  • OS X mouse behaviour

I have a number of Windows, Linux and UNIX systems which I use via a KVM switch, with a Dell PC keyboard, a Microsoft optical mouse, and a HP 20" display.
I use virtual machines running on each of the above (VMware Player on Windows and Ubuntu Linux, KVM on Red Hat Linux, Hyper-V on Windows Server, Zones on Solaris), and they all work consistently.
I've now added in a mid-2011 Mac mini (i5 2.5 GHz, 16 GB RAM, Radeon 6630M discrete graphics, OS X Mavericks), and everything works fine except mouse presses in OS X.
I'm not sure whether something is malfunctioning or whether the OS is being a little bit too smart for me, but either way it's almost unusable as it is, and I could use a bit of help, if that would be OK...
The main issue I have is when I try and move a window by dragging on the title bar; sometimes the window maximises, sometimes it does nothing, simetimes it minimises to the dock (I unchecked that setting, to stop that). I've found that if I press and count to three then mostly I can then drag the window, but sometimes it stops and then maximises/minimises/does nothing.
I've also found that if I drag a folder to copy it, sometimes it springs open before I drag it, sometimes it drags and drops just fine, and sometimes it drags and springs open in the destination folder. It's all a bit unpredictable.
I also need virtualization, and am looking at VirtualBox and VMware Fusion to support the facility, so that I can run Linux and Windows virtual machines on my Mac (I need them for work). But the above behaviour persists inside VMs which I run on the Mac, so I never quite know what's going to happen when I press on a Windows window's title bar. This really makes it pretty much unusable for me, and I'm having to revert to my Windows 7 system to do my work.
What I really want is for a press on the window title bar to immediately grab it so I can move it, which is the behaviour of other operating systems.
Does it sound like something is wrong, is that just the way it is, or is there a way of configuring/tweaking the mouse behaviour to suit?
    Thanks for looking!

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, it looks like something is acting a bit strangely.
All I want to do is to press and hold the mouse button on the title bar to drag the window, just as I would on any other OS.
I'm not looking to double-click (which OS X can be set to do minimize, but I've disabled), not a sticky click and release (like accessibility features might allow), not press a keyboard modifier key as well, and not to press, hold, and wait a while.
You're right that the next logical step is to connect a mouse directly, and that's what I'll do.
I'm going to try connecting the mouse directly, but that really goes against the KVM concept of using a single keyboard/monitor/mouse to control multiple computers. My KVM sends as a USB 1.1 standard mouse, down the same cable as the keyboard, and it works fine with other systems. (I've even got a magic mouse, but that's no good, as it hasn't got a middle button, which I need for my UNIX & Linux VMs.)

  • [Solved] Odd USB mouse behaviour on boot, needs replug to work

    Hey everyone,
this post may seem similiar to the others that have been popping up about USB mice not working on boot, but I still couldn't fix my problem using those threads and I have a suspicion that mine's cause is different.
Anyway: the mouse seems frozen when X starts. After a click and 1--2 seconds, it wakes up. But if I leave it inactive for a couple of seconds, it freezes up again and requires a click to wake up again. If I replug it, it stops doing that and works properly. It feels as if drivers are getting unloaded and loaded.
I'm assuming this is a udev issue, but I don't know how to approach it. I recently switched to systemd from initscripts, but this behaviour has been the same before and now.
The outputs of lsmod and lsusb are equal when the mouse is "frozen" and when it's working.
    Thanks for your attention, Matej
    P. s. This doesn't happen on Ubuntu, just for comparison.

I checked my device in powertop and it was set to "Bad", so that couldn't have been it, I guess.
But your idea made me think, and my "cute little" power script is actually causing this behaviour! I don't know what line exactly does this, but when I find out, I'll write it here. It has to be this script because when I unplug the power cord (or plug it in), the mouse stops working properly!
In case it isn't this script, I'll respond here aswell.
    Thanks!

  • Keyboard coffee spill resulting in strange mouse behaviour

Following a coffee spill on her bluetooth keyboard (which presumably resulted in panic and manic button-pressing) when my mother clicks on an item in the dock, the menu appears - as if she had ctrl-clicked.
Is this just some hard-to-budge coffee on one of the control key contacts or is this behaviour the result of some universal access setting or something that she has activated when panicking over the spilled coffee?
When clicking on an item on the desktop for example, the context menu doesn't appear then - implying that it's not coffee stuck on the contact (which would cause all mouse activity to appear as if a ctrl-click presumably.
Any tips for extracting coffee from Apple bluetooth keyboards also appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    G4 iMac USB 2.0 / G4 iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

A user here did this once.
I took the keyboard apart to get it cleaned out.
Letting coffee dry in there is not the Suufi way, (From the movie "Romancing the Stone").
Anyway, washed it out in the sink and let it dry overnight, Put it back together and it worked fine.
The problem with letting it dry as it is: the coffee will take a month to completely dry and if there's sugar, there's the stickyness. Save the headach and take it apart, clean it up or just throw it away.

  • Powerbook G4. Erratic keyboard and mouse behaviour!

    Hello
Had my Powerbook G4 for about 4 years now.
Recently the keyboard and trackpad have started behaving erratically. Sometimes the space bar doesn't work, sometimes it's the return key, sometimes the whole top line of the qwerty keyboard, sometimes all of these at once which makes the.
Often the mouse is frozen in the top left-hand corner of the finder page on start-up. Rebooting MANY times in a row very occasionally helps but generally doesn't.
I haven't spilt anything or dropped it. I'm guessing it's a software issue as it happens erratically.
I regularly repair disk permissions after every update. I run ClamX weekly and my virus count is zero.
Have tried resetting by pressing Ctrl, shift, option (alt) and holding on/off key for 10 secs but that doesn't seem to work, just ends up res-setting my clock!
    Any thoughts/suggestions?
    All contributions welcome...
    Many thanks
    Helen

Sorry, keyboard went a bit funny!
Meant to say that when they all go at once, it is extremely frustrating!!

  • [SOLVED] No mouse in display manager?

    Hi All,
I just installed a basic arch linux system on a Dell PowerEdge T620. I also installed GNOME and xfce4.  Both desktop environments are working fine when logged in, but I am having trouble with the mouse in various display managers (so far, GDM and SLiM).
The mouse works fine in the actual desktop environment (gnome-session and xfce4-session). xf86-input-mouse is installed.
Note: the mouse actually works - if I randomly click around for a while I eventually hit a button. I just can't see the mouse pointer, so I don't know where it is.
I am not sure what other information is required to debug this, let me know and I will provide it.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Very odd, after two days and a couple of miscellaneous upgrades - nothing related to xorg - it just started working again.
No idea what happened. Marking as solved though.

  • Mouse Problems on new DC G5? or just normal mighty mouse behaviour?

Hey guys i bought a Dual core 2.0 G5 about 6 days ago, and i love it to death, theres just one thing thats bothering me, the Mighty Mouse tends to be annoying at times.
Let me go into detail, sometimes i will be searching up documents or going on the internet and if the page hasnt loaded or even if it has, the mouse disapears and runs me to the bottom of the page and wont let me scroll up and then the mouse disapears and keeps disapearing if i try to move it in that window, unless i click on the desktop and go back to the window....
what causes this? I know its only a software gltich or the mouse itself but cant be anyhting major but still its annoying, i heard others are having some of the same problems, any solution?

Ok I had the same problem when I got mt new DCG5. The MM would think I was holding the button down all the time among other wierd things. It cleared up after I did my usual reinstall to clean all the apps off I don't want that come stock. Not sure if that helps but it did go away so it wasn't a bad mouse like I originallt thought.

  • [SOLVED] Use mouse-button to emulate a keypress

AFAIK you have to start xbindkeys as a daemon for it to work, so the following is now in ~/.xinitrc:

  • Eratic mouse behaviour makes system unusable

After updating to Lion 10.7.4 my system is now unusable. If my 27inch Cinema Display is connected then the mouse pointer jumps off in different directions to the edges of the screen. Move it very slowly (no more than 1 inch per second) and it just about stays stable. Random shooting off to the screen edge even when not touching the mouse.
Unplug the Cinema Display and the random moves stop, but...
Drag and drop works only occasionally
Single clicking randomly gives double clicking results.
All this has only ahppened since the 10.7.4 update. No additional software was installed at that time or since. Tried various wireless and usb mice from Apple, Logitech and a local manufacturer all with no effect. Faults are all able to be replicated instantly.
I now have a system which is unfit for the purpose for which is was sold due to the update.
Seen dozens of posts with the same problem and no action from Apple. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
