[SOLVED] GNOME 3.8 annoying window resize problem

Hello all fellow early-adopters :-)
A very annoying quirk I've noticed, moving from GNOME 3.6 to 3.8, is that it no longer remembers, nor retains, the size/positions I set for many of my application windows. For example, my mail client (Evolution) is sized to fill most of my screen (centrally), with Empathy and Skype as long narrow windows on both sides - giving me a nice, broad "communications" overview on that particular desktop (with dev tools etc open on others).
On 3.6, this layout was retained during my session, as well as next time I started these apps up.
In GNOME 3.8, not only does it insist that these windows are always started as small little bunched-up windows that I need to resize, but every time a window displays a notification/warning (message in internal yellow bar inside the window - such as loss of internet connection, mail retrieval failure etc) it resizes the windows spontaneously to a stupid, small size that overlays the other windows. This is driving me crazy!
Where can I learn a bit more about how window sizing / positioning works in GNOME 3.8, or is it finally time to switch to awesome wm? I want to love GNOME 3.8, I really do. It's so slick, but so... unpolished.
I want to dig in an assist with problems like these, but I need some pointers to some background material first to understand the problem. Is it the window manager? Is it the app?
** UPDATE: Doing a full system upgrade, as of May 18, 2013, has resolved this annoying problem. My windows now stay where they belong, and start with the same size they were closed with. GNOME is now pleasant to use again :-)

I really like GNOME 3.x though (and would like to understand the windowing behaviour), but if the annoying quirks are insurmountable, I will happily switch.
Man I love GNOME 3.x. I admire the courage they had to change, basically, everything, and I find myself more productive with my GNOME 3 Arch box than with my good ol' Slackware KDE 4 box. I just hate those bugs - for example I filed a task in their bugtracker for this window resize problem I have with gedit. If it's a love/hate relationship, I think it's marriage ^_^
With the 3.8 upgrade, deadbeef was having a similar problem with window size/position. I just recompiled it against the latest GTK+3 package upgrade (that came after the 'big upgrade' here on Arch) and it was fixed. But not with gedit

Man I really hope this gets fixed soon, because aside from this one incredibly annoying issue I am loving gnome 3.8.
I get the feeling gnome badly needs more beta testers, sizable regressions like this in "stable" releases happen way too often sad.
I get the exact same feeling. Well bugs exist everywhere, there's no denying. But I think it would be wiser to 'alternate' the nature of each major stable release - one focusing on new features and one focusing on fixing bugs. For example if the only new features in GNOME 3.10 were the AppsFolder full implementation and the introduction of gnome-calendar, and the rest of the development cicle being devoted to fix bugs, I'd be more than happy.
Like Fedora and Ubuntu, the fixed 6-month release cycle colaborates with the bugs. They don't do like Debian or Slackware which are released 'when they are ready'.
EDIT: fout (yet) another bug. At least with facebook chat (haven't tested with other telepathy plugins) the buddy tray icon appear duplicate. Anybody with the same issue?

Is there a solution, so I don't need to press F4 twice?

  • AOL window resizing problem

When reading AOL Mail (10.3.7)the mail window defaults to a small size. When the window is resized to make larger, so that the content can be viewed, the scroll bars don't change, keeping the content the same size. This is really a problem when viewing a photo or html object. Did not have this problem prior to loading Leopard.

I installed Leopard on (2) iMac G5 desktops. AOL did not work on the first Mac with no internet access or mail functionality. For my wife who has been an AOL user since EWorld('94) dried up it was traumatic. I downloaded the AOL Service Assistant from the (help.aol.com using Safari) support site to set up MAC mail. Mac mail worked after I configured the SMTP SSL link and all AOL mail, address book, new and old mail was ported to Mac Mail. I then downloaded the latest version of the AOL Client from the AOL support site. Wow, I have full AOL functionality and content, the only issue is a small area to read and compose email. Each log in has a pop up message with AOL Leopard issues and work around's. It seems a fresh copy of the AOL Client worked for me.

  • Gnome 3.10.1 window resize "stucks"

    Hi,
for about 3 days now, resizing windows works strange for me with Gnome 3.10.1.
How it worked before: keep Alt + mouse middle click pressed over a window, move mouse -> resize window as long as Alt + mouse click is hold
How it works now:  keep Alt + mouse middle click pressed, move mouse -> resize window even if the shortcut is released, until mouse left button is clicked
This disturbs heavily my daily common work habits and I'm not sure if that's an "improvement" (expected behaviour) or a bug. If that's meant to be a feature, is there a known way to get back to the previous behaviour?
    thanks,
    K

  • [SOLVED]Gnome+udisks/devicekit+CD/DVD Drive Problem

Hello everyone, long time lurker, first time poster here!
I've been having a problem with my CD/DVD drives for some time now.
When I issue the eject command via shell or if I press the eject button the trey will only open for an instant and then close again.
if I run "udisks --inhibit-all-polling" the drive will let me open it normally.
Once a disk is inserted the system won't auto mount it though.(even after exiting the command mentioned above)
If I don't log in using Gnome(KDE instead) everything works fine.
But once I log in using Gnome the drive is all messed up until the next reboot.
So, I think its related to Gnome and udisks/device-kit.
It has been like this for more than six months.
udisks/device-kit has been updated several times since then and it never seems to fix anything.
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with this oproblem.
Does anybody have any info on a fix for this?
I mean, this is basic functionality.
Even M$ can handle the freaking eject button! lol
edit: I should mention that other removable media like USB flash drives work as they should.

That did it... removed ide from the hooks in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
It's funny, I searched the forum but I don't remember seeing that particular thread.... strange.
Either I over looked it, or I need to go and re-learn how to search the web...
It's probably time to stop using the ide drivers, I don't think they are being maintained anymore anyway.
    Thank you very much!

Is there any way to stop the window moving like this? I would like to be able to zoom in and not have the window movbe with the mouse.
    Any tips

Probably because you've called frame.pack() and you don't have any components on the contentPane other than panels. Remove frame.pack() if you want the size at 200x200.

Can someone help me with this or is my new MBA malfunctioning. I hope you'll respond.

  • [SOLVED] gnome: how to move window to other monitor with hotkey?

now if I understand right gnome does not support a hotkey or option to move a window to another monitor by default (eg. after having been installed with

so I think the solution is to use an alternate window manager (I think the default is metacity) so my question is which window manager should I use that has this feature (criteria are relatively lightweight, stable and easily set up)? also can anyone point me to instructions on how to install a non-standard window manager with a desktop environment?
thanks in advance and sorry for the newbie question.

I don't use gnome, but if you extend the desktop, don't you just have to move the window out of the view of the one screen to the other?
I'm using i3, a tiling window manager. it's very lightweight and easy to setup. just install the whole group "i3" together with the package "dmenu", edit ~/.xinitrc to run "exec i3" and start it using the startx command
you can use the arander to configure how the screens are aranged.
in i3 you can move a whole "desktop" to another screen, or just move programms to other "desktops", just read the manual on their website

  • [SOLVED] kwin settings causing strange window sizing problems

It might be due to some of the updates for KDE that came out last night....but I'm leaning toward something that I did.
Earlier today when I was browsing the 'Get New Wallpapers' dialog box I noticed that the notifications were taking up the full screen.  I thought it was strange but no big deal.  This was shortly after I set a Window Specific kwin setting to remember the size and position of the wallpaper browser.
I set the option by right clicking the top of the window>Advanced>Special Window Settings>Geometry Tab, then remember size and position.  I also did this for Special Application Settings.
So basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows how to globally reset all of the kwin special application and window settings?  I don't mind losing my others, so long as I can get this fixed.  It's positively driving me nuts.
Here is a screenshot of the app launcher menu when I hit F1.
    Thanks

-- mod edit: read the Forum Etiquette and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/For … s_and_Code --
After using the desktop for some time after the problem started it seems like all of the plasma workspace dialog boxes are using the same geometry settings, even though I have reset those options....
    EDIT:
I figured it out.  Apparently even if you uncheck the box it doesn't completely remove the rule.  I found the rule for plasma-desktop under:
right click on top of window > Configure Window Behavior > Window Rules
I deleted it, and now all is well.

  • Excel 2011 problem: windows resize automatically when switching between workbooks

I am facing a very annoying problem when opening several workbooks in Excel. When shifting from one workbook to the other (either by selecting the workbook from the menu list, or by cycling through using 'cmd + ~'), the workbook jumps to a smaller size automatically. I have to click the green + button twice before it stays on the maximum window size again. Very frustrating experience when you have to switch between workbooks regularly.
Anyone experiencing the same problem? Is there a solution to this?
I am using Excel for Mac 2011. Just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Yosemite 10.10.1, but was facing the same problem using Mountain Lion.
Hope someone can help me out!

Hello.  Thank you for posting your questions.  I followed the suggestions and found  that nothing worked on my computer.  So I tried clicking around and found 2 solutions.
    1. On the top tool bar, Click on "View" and scroll down to " Enter Full Screen".  The tabs were easily accessible.
    My Favorite now:
    2. On the top tool bar, Clck on "Window" and scroll down to "New Window".  This will duplicate your desired window in a "complete with tabs- window".  I then Exited/Clicked out of the "offending" window.
I think clicked back in the "good" window and clicked "Save".
I was able to close out the document and re-enter it from my Finder Window.
    Problem Fixed.
I hope those of you out there can have this work on your machines.
    I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on a Mid 2014.

  • Does Running Boot Camp Solve Mavericks' Windows-Networking Problems?

Anyone running Mavericks in a Windows-server environment knows how agonizingly slow it is populating a window on the server if there are more than a few dozen files in it (we have 25-30 folders on our Windows server that have more than 10,000 files in each one, and they are all images files with sizes between 5 and 50 MBs each). When we open a folder that's on the server in Mavericks' Finder, it can take up to 30 minutes to populate that window. We have since reverted to Mountain Lion and although it's still slow to populate those windows, it's nowhere near as slow as Mavericks, and once the window populates, as long as we don't shut down the computer, the next time we open that window it populates within seconds (I'm guessing that some sort of cache file is created).
Does anyone know if running Windows in Boot Camp (or Parallels) would speed up the Windows-server window population problem? I'm guessing it might but I'm not sure if the computer is still connecting to the server using the Mac networking protocol. If I use my Windows 7 PC the server windows populate almost instantly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I managed to successfully install and get running compiz-core-git, ccsm-git, compiz-plugins-extra-git, compiz-plugins-main-git, compizconfig-python-git, and libcompizconfig-git; all from the AUR. But when all was said and done, I was left without a window decorator. I wanted compiz-decorator-gtk, but I couldn't find it in the AUR and the one in the community repo wouldn't install due to not having compiz-core installed (I had compiz-core-git), which left me stuck going back to 0.8.8 for now.
Had you enabled 'window decoration' in CCSM??? (4 compiz 0.9.x?) On install, it is probably not enabled (along with resizing, moving windows, etc). It also won't pick up your 0.8.8 settings - so you need to set up CCSM settings from scratch.. Also, Compiz should have built gtk-window-decorator when you compiled it. (which is why i believe that you didn't have CCSM comfigured correctly with your new version of compiz).
    as for the compiz packages in AUR, can't give you much advice there, as i build compiz myself, using Scott Moreau's build scripts;
    git clone git://anongit.compiz.org/users/soreau/scripts
there are a few build scripts - for both 0.8.8 and 0.9.x - whichever ones end in '++' - are for building 0.9.x ... for both series, there are scripts to build all of the addons / plugins.
building it yourself, may not be your ideal approach, so i would recommend trying the AUR pkgbuilds for compiz 0.9.x , but this time have a look in CCSM, after you install the new version and make sure that you have enabled all of the important stuff like move, resize, window decoration, etc.
You also might want to read through compiz' Wiki, the trouble-shooting section covers your 'no-window-decoration' problem ~ as it is quite common.
