Solved Gnome: clicking on home takes me to find files

If I click on gnome menu-->places-->home or anything other than computer it takes me to find files rather than where id like to go. Ive double checked my config for nautalus with no joy and I am now unsure what could be causing this.
any ideas would be great.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Places Menu - Home, Desktop, etc folders open with...

Hello, I somehow managed to get EasyTag to open the links in Gnome's Places menu, but it's driving me insane.
    I've tried:
-removing EasyTag, which doesn't fix the problem, and leaves me with the error "Could not open location file:///home/james"
-setting folder properties from within nautilus to open folders with "File Browser", but that does nothing
    -looked in gnome-conf in /desktop/gnome/applications/component_viewer
    -searched for easytag in gnome-conf
I've look high and low for answers, but none of which seem to help me out.

  • Gnome, Nautilus / Pcman Main menu Opening Find File instead of Home

    Hi there,
I am running two user, mine on Compiz-standalone with Pcman as it's lighter.
The second user is using gnome and therefore need and want to keep using nautilus,
The problem is when trying to open the Home folder from the Gnome main menu, a dialogue box "Find File" is opening instead of the Home folder by Nautilus.
Now after searching the forum, I edited the /usr/share/applications/mime.cache
However this hasn't change the problem, I try restarting the PC for the change to take effect but without success.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this annoying bug?

I am having the same issue, using regular Gnome with Nautilus. I started noticing it after the upgrade to Gnome 2.30. Clicking any of the top section buttons under the Gnome panel's "Places" menu brings up "Find Files" searching inside the folder, instead of Nautilus on the folder. Clicking on "Computer" actually does bring up Nautilus.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome: initial working directory set to / instead of HOME

    Solved: See commentary #6
    Hi there,
Since some weeks ago, don't know what I touched, everything starts from the root directory instead of starting from the home directory. That is, file managers, consoles, emacs, etc. start always in the root directory when searching for a file. I don't know why!
I have HOME properly adjusted and if I write "cd" in a console I go to home. Is there any other variable that controls the directory to start with?
    Thanks

OK, I found the problem... quite stupid. I had all the commands that I typically use (I only use shortcuts, never the mouse) bound with gnome keybindings. Somehow the commands start with the working directory in /, and that was the problem.
    Solutions for Gnome:
    -Use another program for keybindings.
-A quite poor workaround. Create an executable to call your commands:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd && $1
and it will force the working directory to HOME
    -Gnome working properly??

  • When I click the home button, it takes me to my home page AND opens a blank tab. How can I get it to stop opening the new tab!

I have igoogle as my hompage. When I click the home button, it will open my igoogle page but also open up a blank tab as well. Firefox didn't always do this, it just started. Maybe when I upgraded to the 5.0. I've tried looking in the options and I can't find something there and there doesn't seem to be a solution on the web. How do I get it to stop doing that?

  • When I click my home page icon the tab this is open goes to my home page BUT another new tab opens.

when I click my home page icon the tab that is open goes to my home page BUT another new tab opens. How do I stop the new tab from appearing?

It's easy to add extra tabs to your set of home pages. You can use the Options dialog to make sure there is only one. These articles point the way:
    * [[Startup, home page and download settings]]
    * [[How to set the home page]]
Because the space is short, you may want to select the whole home page URL (Ctrl+A) and paste it into a document or into a larger textbox like the one I'm typing in now. You're looking for a vertical bar (|) that is followed by a second URL.
If it's not part of your home page setting, the most likely cause for this change is a bad add-on that rode along with some free software.
    I suggest starting here:
Open Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
Then, in Firefox, open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible).
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that shut down the extra tab?

  • [SOLVED] gnome-screenshot in gnome3 problem

    Hi,
When I try to take a screen shot using printscr, or in the command line using
    gnome-screenshot
I only get a picture of my background.
    $ gnome-screenshot
** (gnome-screenshot:1908): DEBUG: The GetProfileForWindow request failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
The same thing happens with gcolor2:  When I try to grab a color from a window it returns the color
    from my background instead.
Using gnome shell's screen cast functionality works just fine.
Any ideas to how I can fix this?
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3 | There is no application installed for _any file type

I just installed arch and gnome 3. I'm trying to open files via nautilus, but get "There is no application installed for ..." for any type of file I try, including plain text files, binaries, etc. Do I have to configure gnome manually for it to open these files? I've read the arch beginner wiki and the gnome wiki, but this problem is not mentioned there. Any help would be appreciated.
    EDIT: Solved
There were three things I needed to do to get this working correctly:
    1. $ pacman -S gnome-mime-data
    2. For text files, pacman -S gvim #This conflicts with vim, but the package gvim now contains vim (and vice versa, but nautilus won't open files unless gvim is installed instead of vim)
    3. Binary files: I tried running some binaries I programmed on Ubuntu, but they wouldn't run until I recompiled them. Duh.
Note: I still have a small issue when opening a file that has no mime data associated with it. I can click "select application," but I am forced to choose from a very limited list, and there is no option to enter a command or browse for other programs.

    Cheers.
Regarding your music player, I recently had a struggle deciding which way to go.
Banshee, no, pulls in gnome and mono stuff (running as pure a Xfce desktop as I possibly can here). Exaile, have tried and really don't like it. Rhythmbox, again, too ingrained with gnome libraries for my liking. Amarok, unfortunately the love affair ended with 2.0. Clementine (read Amarok pre 2.0), yes please, but a gtk port would be nice, I have no other use for Qt. Songbird, yes please again, but no longer linux supported. Nightingale (read Songbird fork), seems to have lost momentum.
Of course, this is all just my personal opinion, but you can see the problem I had. There does not seem to be a 'large project' desktop agnostic music player/organiser for linux. They all seem to be deeply tied into Gnome or Kde.
My solution, if you want something lightweight, is MPD and Ario. MPD is just your background daemon that looks after managing your library/database, and Ario is a gtk 'frontend' that will let you search and sort your MPD database, and create the playlists to be played with MPD. The beauty of this system is that you do not need a music app to be running to play your music. Just the lightweight MPD daemon. Once a playlist has been loaded, you can close Ario and just let MPD do it's stuff.
I know Xfce has a panel app that lets you control MPD and even launch Ario to change playlists. I'm sure the other desktops will most likely have some sort of panel app too (I have even written a simple little python script that monitors MPD track changes and diplays a notification).
Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue. For more MPD info, see the wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mpd
    Cheers.

  • Double-clicking the home button causes my iPad 2 to crash

I am runing iOS 5.1  When I double-click the home button the interface crashes, and it takes me back to the "slide to unlock" screen, with the end result being that I cannot close any open applications.  Has anyone else seen this issue?  I have rebooted my iPad, and this does not make the issue go away.
iPad 2, 32GB, WiFi only running iOS 5.1.
    Cheers,
    Cole.
EDIT: So, for testing purposes, I turned on the multi-touch gestures and tried swiping up to bring up the task list.  As soon as I swipe up, it crashes as well, so the problem is not with the home button, but with the task list.
    Cole.

    Don't double-click it!
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • Why can't I sleep my Ipod by double clicking the home button?

My sleep/wake button doesn;t work anymore, and I want to be able to sleep my Ipod by double clicking the home button. That would be much more useful than the 3 stupid choices I have now: "Home, Search, and iPod."
The home button already takes you home. So choice 1 is stupid. To search all you have to do is press home and swipe to the right; so choice 2 is also stupid. Choice 3 is ******** because I can just click "music."
Why can't double clicking home do something useful? Like making up for a poorly designed, chinese-made button that only lasts until just after your warrenty expires?

"Why can't double clicking home do something useful?"
"Useful" s subjective.  The options are helpful to many.
" Like making up for a poorly designed, chinese-made button that only lasts until just after your warrenty expires?"
My button has lasted for three years.  I know no one personally who has a broken powerbutton.
Perhaps it is simply that your ipod has an issue.  Maybe you are blowing this out of all proportion.

  • Single-click of home button does same as double-click

When you double-click the home button it goes to the little music module with the play bar and "close" and "music" buttons.
The problem I'm having is that it is going to the music module on a single-click...not every time, but often enough that it's a real annoyance.
I searched the forum and haven't seen anyone else complain of this. Am I alone? Is there any way to fix it???

    Hello,
You may have a faulty ipod. If its possible you could take it to an apple store for an assessment.
    hope this helps
