[SOLVED][GNOME] where should i manually install JDK8?

i downloaded Oracle Java JDK8 because i need it for coding in school... the thing is i havent really mess with the filesystem much so... i was wondering where should i install the program? where in root directory should i install it?
Last edited by FenrirAB (2014-04-18 01:25:31)

I was able to restore openJDK7 back to my computer.
before it was giving me a bash error stating that "bash java: command not found"
now i have it back...
I've also deleted the Oracle Java JDK 8 that i downloaded from Oracle itself.... by removing it in the /opt as was suggested to install it there
all thanks to @x33a for providing me an AUR link for JDK8:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/jdk
i installed this package by using:
cd Builds
tar -xzvf jdk.tar.gz
cd jdk
sudo makepkg -s --asroot
[password]
then the installation begins
but when i type java -version
its still giving me the openJDK7..
anyway to solve this?
think it has something to do with $PATH... but i have no idea how to work that...

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell Extensions won't install from website

When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ from either Chromium or Firefox, extensions fail to install. If I click the toggle to turn a new extension "ON", nothing happens. Reloading the site switches it back to "OFF".
I was able to install gnome-shell-extension-mediaplayer-git from the AUR. (Which also pulls in gnome-shell-extension-common-git.) It works fine. The problem is that most of the extensions on the AUR appear to be outdated and the users directed to the official site.
This is a relatively new install of Arch and extensions have never worked. Maybe there's a package I'm missing? Or is there a way to get any debugging output? I'm not sure where to look.

I found the following from AskUbuntu (not my own words, pasted from the source:
I'll take a wild stab in the dark: If you're using Chrome/Chromium, navigate to about:plugins and make sure "Gnome Shell Integration" is enabled. Then navigate back to extensions.gnome.org and when the ribbon appears at the top make sure you "Always Allow for this Site"
On Firefox you'll have to do something similar if you've turned extensions off. Browse to about:plugins and make sure libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so is present / enabled. If it's not, upgrade Gnome Shell, or find it on your filesystem and link to it from to ~/.mozilla/plugins (you shouldn't have to do this though).

Isn't there also a "scratch" or "cache" directory as well?  Where should I put that for best peformance?

Yes, the programs use their own cache/ swap files.  Doesn't realyl matter where you put them. All your drivces are fast enough for any single one of them.

    Hi
LPX only supports 64bit Audio Unit plugins. You probably need to get the latest updates for all of your plugs.
Some plugs are not currently available as 64bit versions: you may want to try

  • Where should DNG profile editor install the .dcp file?

Just made my first attempt to create a custom camera profile using the X-Rite color checker passport and the DNG Profile Editor.
Thanks to the excellent tutorial, the process went smoothly.  Next I took the final step of exporting the profile (.dcp) file, expecting to find the new profile when I opened an image in ACR.  Unfortunately the new profile was not listed in the Camera Profile dropdown menu.
After much searching I discovered that the profile was written to the folder containing the .dng images used to construct the profile.  Obviously not where it belongs in order for ACR to find it.   I assumed that "Export Profile" would automatically write the .dcp file to the proper location.
Where should the .dcp files be installed for Win7x64 running ACR 8.2.?
Is there a way to establish the proper location as the default in the Profile Editor?
    Thanks for your help.

Custom-created .DCP profile files go into the following location under your Windows Users folder:
    C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
The AppData folder is a hidden-system folder so you may need to turn on the viewing of those type of folders in your Explorer folder view options or just type \AppData into the folder address area and hit Enter once you get to your username folder.

  • Where should I install SSAS

I have the following environment setup.
ETL server (SQL Server 2008 R2)
Reporting Server (SQL Server 2008 R2)
    Web server (Windows Server Enterprise)
Where should I install SSAS? I don't have the budget to get a separate server for SSAS for now.
    Thanks.

Without knowing the workload of the different Server it's difficult to give a Suggestion.
In common ETL loads the data warehouse and afterwards the cubes will be processed, then the ETL process is finished and the server would be in idle, while SSAS is in use for reporting; so I would install SSAS on the ETL Server; but as I wrote, without knowing
    the workload over time ...

  • Architecture Q. : Where should the ODI Repository Database be installed ?

    Hi all,
Where should the repository ODI database be installed
=> on the same server as the source database one or ?
=> on the same server as the target database one
    Thanks for your answers
Edited by: Meapri on Feb 26, 2009 6:59 AM

    Hi Shib,
Maybe I could agree with you if you only use ODI for DW, for instance.
If you think about data integration, no matter what kind of system, even at transactional system, or datamart extract/load the concept of "source and target" can be any of the RDBMS at company.
What I'm defending is that in a complex environment, where ODI is the company *"data veins"*, the concept of source and target became complex too and, in my opinion, is not possible to decide where the repository should stay just by the use of those concepts.

  • Manual install of GPRS settings on X68GB?

    Hi!
I just purchased a Nokia X68GB and i can make a phonecall with it and also send and receive text messages, but the Internet connection and MMS does not work.
I received automatic instal instructions from my operator via SMS,but they does not work. When contacting the operator regarding the fact that the Internet connection still does not work i was told to instal the GPRS settings manually.
This is the instructions the Operator provides with:
To set up your GPRS settings manually, set the following parameters:
    Profilename: Parlino GPRS
    URL: wap.parlino.se
    Proxy: 130.244.196.090
    APN: internet.parlino.se
    Username: <empty>
    Password:  <empty>
My problem is that i can´t find where in the phone i should type in these settings. I have read the instruction manual, yet i still can´t find where to type these parameters.
Does anyone has the knowledge to guide me where to write these parameters?
    Thank´s in advance!

Hi and thank´s for your reply, pudu!
I appreciate your help, however, the instructions you gave did not work.
Yesterday i received an email from Nokia with instructions how to manually install GPRS settings on my X68GB,and now i can connect to Internet.
These are the instructions i was given that helped me to solve the case:
    1) Press the Menu button, then 'Settings', then 'Connections', then 'Destinations.' and finally 'Internet'.
    2) Make sure the list that appears here is empty. We do this by selecting all possible access points are, and then press 'Options' and 'Clear'.
    3) Press 'Options' and 'New access point' - now you will be asked if you want to search for available access points - answer 'No'.
    4) Select 'Packet' and name it 'Parlino GPRS' and press 'OK'
    5) Now our new access point, turned up, so select it and press 'Options' and 'edit'
    6) Press 'Options' and 'Advanced'. Highlight this 'Proxy address' and enter 130. 244. 196. 090. Press 'OK'and then 'Back'.
    7) Press the 'Connection Name' and enter internet.parlino.se, then press OK
    8) Press the 'Home' and enter wap.parlino.se, press OK. Then press back until you return to the home screen.
The settings are now finished and your Service Provider given you correct information so you should be able to access the Internet.
These instructions worked for me,so i now consider the problem as solved. Hope these instructions can be helpful for anyone if they get the same problem.

  • Manually Installed Agent is not showing up in the Operations Manager Console Under Pending Management.

    Hi Community,
I submitted this question because I'm a bit stuck with SCOM 2012 R2, I'll try to explain briefly what is happening right now in my environment,  we have a DEV SCOM Deployment in which all the roles are installed in a single server, this servers is a
VMware machine running Windows Server 2008R2.
The Initial installation of the SCOM Operations Manager and all the other components was not performed by me but by a co-worker, unfortunately he doesn't remember much about the initial configuration. So i had to pickup where he left things about a year
ago, neither of us are SCOM experts, and we have almost no previous experience with previous versions of this application.
Now the problem that I'm facing is the following, all the DEV Servers are Domain Controllers and one of the indication within the "Guide for System Center Management Pack for Active Directory for Operations Manager 2012" states the following
    Configuration
    Supported?
    Agent-less monitoring
    No
After my first review I notice that our servers were being monitor by agent-less mode and given the above statement from the Operations Guide the only way that we could ever get those domain controllers monitor by SCOM would be by installing the agent on
each server, so I read somewhere (Can't remember where) that in order to install the agents in all the servers I should first remove them from the Agent-less node, which I did. Then I tried to use the discovery wizard to get the agent install in all of them
but it didn't matter how many times I try the servers never show up.
I read in a Tech Net Article that you had to modify the security settings so SCOM would let me decide if I wanted to approve it or not.
    --> http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212853.aspx
I performed the suggested steps from the article but still the servers were not showing up, not even if I run the Discovery wizard, so I decided to go and perform the installation manually in a couple of servers I was able to install the agent in one of
the Domain Controllers, I configured the agent to use a service account that has Domain Admin rights. An hour after I installed the agent I went back to the Operations Console Manager and I check under Pending Action but the Server was not showing up. So i
went back to the Internet to try to find out if someone else had experience the same problem, and in one website some mentioned that if the servers were not showing up it was probably because they were still register in the SCOM Database, now I have no idea
of how i can check that or How can i remove them from there to have them available again, but what troubles me the most is that even after i installed the agent manually the server were not being recognize.
I went to the Event Viewer and I found one particular event that caught my attention, see below :

    </Event>
Not sure if this is related to the problem that I'm facing right now, but , I make sure that the RPC Services were running and also the related dependencies too. There's no Firewall enable in any of the servers and DNS seems to be working properly.
Ports 135 / 5723 are open and listening so since I ran out of ideas, I would like to know if some of the experts in this field could perhaps give me some guidelines.
There's one caveat that I haven't mention yet and that is related to SQL, I checked and my user just has read access to SQL i'm not sure if that could affect this but i think is worth mentioning.
My main goal is to have all the servers showing up in the Operations Manager Console.
So thanks all in advance !
    Oscar Loria

So you can ping and nslookup from your ms to these agents and vice versa right?  I wouldn't do a manual install, I would push the agent from the management server.  You can uninstall the agent manually, or use cleanmom to get rid of them.  Then
do an install from the console.  When you initiate the install from the console (management server), should it run into any issues it will dump out an error which will give you an idea of where the problem may be.
    From Holmans post on this:
e MOM Server could not execute WMI Query "Select * from Win32_OperatingSystem" on

    1.  Ensure agent push account has local admin rights
    2.  Firewall is blocking NetBIOS access.  If Windows 2008 firewall is enabled, ensure “Remote Administration (RPC)” rule is enabled/allowed.  We need port 135 (RPC) and the DCOM port range opened for console push through a firewall.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome login hangs on the first try

Since this past weekend, when I try to log into gnome, it accepts my password and greys out the password entry box, but just sits there forever. If I hit escape it aborts properly, and the second try always works. Where should I be looking to see what's going wrong the first time?
I'm also having another, more serious problem that may be related: whenever the "Authentication Required" window pops up for a settings change or mounting another disk, it gives me the same greyed-out hang. But trying again doesn't work, since cancelling it cancels the attempt altogether - the next try just hangs again. As it is I can only do any root operations through the command-line; gnome is totally neutered by this. So -- what is this gksu-like functionality of gnome 3 properly called, and how do I debug it? Does it have a log somewhere I should look for?
Last edited by jorenko (2014-03-25 11:02:19)

I've restarted polkitd on the command-line without --no-debug, and it shows NO relevant information at all. After cancelling the grayed-out dialog, I get:
Error performing authentication: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Cancelled: Authentication dialog was dismissed by the user (polkit-error-quark 1)
21:54:02.838: Operator of unix-session:2 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action org.freedesktop.policykit.exec for unix-process:10885:60499253 [bash] (owned by unix-user:jorenko)
But there's nothing from when I entered my password and the graying-out began.
Interestingly, when I used --replace to replace the polkitd that systemd had started for me, I got only command-line auth (gnome wouldn't launch the dialog at all, and "pkexec echo hi" gave me a command-line password prompt), which actually worked. But when first stopping the systemd version, then running it again manually, I got the above result.

  • SCCM 2007 R2 Query - Look for Win2k8 servers where Terminal Services is installed.

    Hi there.
I have been looking all over the net. That's how it feels ;-D. I'm trying to a find out how to create a query that I can use in a SCCM Collection. This query should result in only Windows 2008 Servers where Terminal Services have been installed.
So far I have tried at least ten different ways of doing this. With no prevail. So I hope you guys can assist me.
    1) Create a collection.
    2) Create a query.
    a. The query should only find Windows 2008 Server where Terminal Services is installed.
    3) Then I can distribute only to these servers.
Thank you. Your help is highly appreciated.

Hmm... Well, keeping in mind that from my point of view, there is no reason to not install the client on every box in the enterprise.  What's the reason to not install the client?  If there's a political reason, like those boxes belong to some other team who doesn't want you touching their servers, why are you responsible for ensuring Terminal Services is installed?  Make *them* come up with an alternate method to confirm that.
Just deploy the client and move on.
I cannot think of a single way to determine if Terminal Services is installed without either the ConfigMgr Client installed, or a different administrative tool tell you that.  Whether that other Admin tool is a remote script you design & run, or if you have some other tool available (would SCOM be able to be configured to report that?  Maybe.), I have no suggestions for you other than logging into each server interactively and looking manually.
Which brings me full circle back to: just install the ConfigMgr client.
Slightly OT: once they have the client installed, you could then create a DCM Baseline so that you could run a report and see which ones might have 'drifted' from the approved configuration.Standardize. Simplify. Automate.

  • Manually installing FP 11.7 on Mac OS 10.6.8-uninstall old?

I know the option exists to use the built in updater in system preferences.
But in cases you have multiple macs to update, it's sometimes easier to just download the updater, put it onto a thumb drive, and then manually install in each mac. My question is this:
Do I need to first untinstall the previous version via the uninstaller app in the utilities folder before installing the new version? Or can I just run the new installer without deleting the old one. NOTE: the "old" one in this case is usually just the previous version of Flash Player released.

Usually the installer should automatically uninstall any previous versions.  However there are sometimes circumstances where the old player does not get fully uninstalled.  But I would still try using the installer alone.
Use this installer if you run multiple installations http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/mac/install_flash_playe r_11_osx.dmg
There is also a downloadable uninstaller at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html
