[SOLVED] GNOME3: gnome-session and GDM won't start

Whoops, had to -Syu.
I'm trying to start GNOME3 in two ways,
1) exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session in .xinitrc
2) Through GDM (/etc/rc.d/gdm start)
When I try to startx I get this error
gnome-session: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libdconfsettings.so: undefined symbol: g_main_context_invoke
When I try to use GDM I get a number of these lines
gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 1.784000 seconds
and
gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors

Sorry for the vague title. I don't really have any specifics to go on for this problem.
When I try to start a gnome-session through startx, I get a screen that says, "Oh no! Something has gone wrong", with no error outputs in xsession-errors.
First off is some system info. I'm running a Thinkpad T540p:

I'm pretty lost now. I finally managed to get X working on my Nvidia/Intel combination with twm, but it refuses to work with gnome-session.
    Any ideas?

    Same problem for me too!
After kernel update on restarting GDM try to start but fails. I've last nvidia-173xx driver installed.
I've solved the problem forcing nvdia driver reinstallation. This is my Xserver log!

  • Acrobat X Pro (10 and lower) won't start on Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello, does anyone know why Acrobat X Pro (10 and lower) won't start on Windows 7 (64-bit)? It just doesn't respond whether I try to open files with it or double-click to start the program. Re-installation and Repair doesn't help. I had the same issue with the previous versions of Acrobat on this computer.
    Thank you!

Ditto to all of the above. Acrobat Pro was working fine until a day or two ago, then kaput.  Reader still functions.  I have Win 7 (64bit), CS6 Design and Web Premium. Anyone with any new ideas?

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71991
I've had a rough time these past few days and I posted earlier on Arch64 forums thinking it was just architecture thing but as it turns out after my reinstallation of Arch to 64 bit again (First i686, then 64, then i686 and now 64 again) I finally got it to work but this time Gnome is a pain in the ass, it didn't work with KDE either but KDE never gave me an error or gave me an option to failsafe into the OS.

Just a point here is that I've had the exact same software installed the same day that I reinstalled and this error did not occur but after formatting my partition with ext4 and testing Arch64 it did. But it did with 32bit as well, there were tons of errors.
I've read about this ConsoleKit error in a few posts here but nothing seems to indicate a fix or anything and since I'm using Gnome now I didn't find anything on it just about KDE.
I can safely use "Failsafe Gnome" without startup scripts but I want it to work without any problems and I don't know if the "dri" thing is related to the ConsoleKit thing with GDM.
I installed it via FTP and had the latest updates as soon as I've installed, so if this is just something that is happening to me right now or alot of other people, please give us hints or anything that could solve this?
If you read my Arch64 thread you know that stuff stopped working for me, first the network (it turns out I had to boot Windows inbetween installing Arch for my network even to start and that sounds ridicilous if it depends on another operating system starting the device because in Windows the network card was turned on with a green light wherein Arch after installing it didn't. I reformated my partitions and changed it again, installed Windows again and tried it out and then installed Arch. It worked, and then I mixed around with KDE and after five minutes of using "startx" (the only thing working) I decided to reinstall with Gnome, but then the network didn't start again (tried booting about ten times) and then I just thought "Let's start windows first so it turns on" and when I just booted Windows and immiedatiely restarted it and booted with the Arch CD, network was available again. Strange? Or is this a period of instability for Arch?
But when I got my network to start, appearantly Keyboard and mouse wasn't working because Xorg forgot to install the drivers when I installed the full group of Xorg so I had to fix that and now it's giving me this error.

Without a dbus socket, dbus probably isn't running. It's supposed to be started automatically when a program needs it. Check to see that it is installed and running:
    pacman -Q dbus
    pgrep -l dbus
Dbus won't run without hal, so hal should be in:
    tail /etc/rc.conf
Are any of your partitions full?
    df -h
For the other error, it looks like libdrm isn't installed, but I don't think you need it if you're running the nvidia driver.
Your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log would also be useful. Also check dmesg for errors.
And see if /etc/rc.d/dbus is marked executable.

  • GNOME and Cinnamon won't start this morning

When I woke up this morning my laptop would not start into GNOME or Cinnamon. I get the infamous "Oh no! Something has gone wrong and the system can't recover." With a log out button that does nothing. At first I wasn't sure if it was GDM causing the problem, but I was able to get into another terminal session and I installed lightdm. I was able to finally get a working desktop using MATE, but it's by no means my preference. I looked in /var/log/ but there's not much to speak for in the gdm and lightdm folders, and there is no cinnamon or GNOME logs. I'm thinking this might be from the recent ati-dri update but I could be wrong. I also tried doing a pacman update but still can't boot into GNOME or Cinnamon. Any suggestions?

Sadly I bit the bullet and reinstalled. I had a lot to do and needed to get it going, and in this situation reinstalling was the better option. I think it was because my own stupidity though. I was in the middle of installing mesa-r300-r600-radeonsi-git from AUR and had to stop in the middle of the process and I think some packages were mixed up. I didn't think any vital packages had gotten replaced yet, but they must have. Thank you anyways guys.

  • [solved] GDM won't start after update

    Hello.
Today I made a pacman -Syu and gdm was updated.
On the next boot i only get a console and not the usual gdm login.
I loged in and tried to start gdm manualy with /etc/rc.d/gdm restart
wich results in an error message : "gdm already running. Aborting!", but it isnt
The X Server works (tried startx).
Any ideas what happend to gdm and how to fix it?
/edit : additional info: using current repository

Does your gdm.conf file contains paths like this: /usr/X11R6/bin
I think pacman just overwrites the config files if you never changed anything to them. In my case I did some modifications, so pacman made a backup of my modified file.
In case your file don't contain any /usr/X11R6/... , you may try do diff your file between mine:
    # GDM Configuration file. You can use gdmsetup program to graphically
    # edit this, or you can optionally just edit this file by hand. Note that
    # gdmsetup does not tweak every option here, just the ones most users
    # would care about. Rest is for special setups and distro specific
    # tweaks. If you edit this file, you should send the HUP or USR1 signal to
    # the daemon so that it restarts: (Assuming you have not changed PidFile)
    # kill -USR1 `cat /var/run/gdm.pid`
    # (HUP will make gdm restart immediately while USR1 will make gdm not kill
    # existing sessions and will only restart gdm after all users log out)
    # You can also use the gdm-restart and gdm-safe-restart scripts which just
    # do the above for you.
    # For full reference documentation see the gnome help browser under
    # GNOME|System category. You can also find the docs in HTML form on

  • GDM won't start, Gnome has no menubars

    Hi,
I'm a fresh beginner to Linux and Archlinux. I'm setting up my laptop to dual boot Arch and Windows 7. I've almost finished the Beginner's Guide/Gnome Wiki but I'm hung up badly on getting Gnome and GDM to work.
I got as far as having Gnome startup on boot, by using the inittab approach. But when I boot up, no login screens are displayed, it just goes directly to Gnome. I can see the leaf background and a few icons but that's all. How do I get GDM to start up on boot, and why can't I see anything else on my desktop?
I also don't understand how to configure GDM, apparently it used to be very easy and now it's very difficult? I tried the commands listed in the Gnome Wiki but they didn't seem to do anything that made sense.
Please let me know what future information you need, as I wasn't sure what to provide. Thanks.
    -Jon
P.S. I'm going to slap whoever made the question at the end of the registration...it's a PITA booting to and from Windows and Linux.

Why is there a "Configure" section for GDM in the Gnome guide then? What do I need to do to show a graphical login-screen at bootup and have menu bars on the desktop?
I think this post should be moved to the newby section
This is from the wiki for gdm
    Daemon method
You simply need to add the daemon name to your daemons array in /etc/rc.conf
Near the end of the file you will see a line that looks similar to the following:
DAEMONS=(syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond) # this is the daemons array
Append the daemon name for the display manager of your choice (gdm, kdm, or slim):
DAEMONS=( dbus syslogd klogd !pcmcia network netfs crond slim)
This is part of my innitab untouched
    # Example lines for starting a login manager
    x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/xdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon
    #x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >/dev/null 2>&1
It does not make any difference as I'm starting using the daemon method
I suggest you abandon and start again with a new install and this time read the beginners guide very carefully
I'm Dyslexic this is how i install arch I have to copy paste every thing in the terminal in 2 hr I have a fully functional gnome desktop.
a few tips do a net install use all default setting in nano don't alter anything  after reboot log in as root then "pacman Syu" then "pacman -S xorg"  then "pacman -S your (graphics card)" after if nvidia  do "nvidia-xconfig" "pacman -S firefox" or what ever " pacman -S leafpad" or what ever, reboot log in as root the type startx that should drop you into a basic desktop with 3 terminals type "firefox" or what ever and work from there all that in 20min now you can build you system knowing the basic configure works you will also need to install dbus and add to the  daemons it must be the 1st to start now go back to the beginners  guide and take from there

  • ITunes and QuickTime won't start

    Hi!
The problem is that I've installed iTunes, everything went fine, but when I'm trying to start it with iTunes.exe, it won't start.
I can see iTunes.exe in the task manager, for about 5 seconds, and then it disappears.
The same happens with QuickTime player(I don't really care about QuickTime but I thought it can help solving the problem).
I know there is a lot of topics about this on the internet, and yes I've googled it, but nothing solved my problem.
I tried a lot of things already:
    * start iTunes.exe with administrator rights
    * start iTunes.exe with XP and Vista compatibility modes
    * reinstall iTunes with XP and Vista compatibility modes
    * uninstall iTunes (and any other apple software), clean any leftover iTunes registry entry, and then reinstall everything again
    * boot my windows 7 in safe boot mode, and try to start iTunes.exe
    * turn off bonjour service then restart computer and try to start iTunes
    * create a new user account, login and try to start iTunes
Nothing helped on Windows 7 32bit, though I have a Windows XP installed as a Virtualbox guest(the host OS is linux), and there is everything works fine, but I would like to use Windows 7.
I had the same problem with the previous version of iTunes. Now I'm trying to install the latest iTunes downloaded from the Apple's site.
I would really appreciate any suggestions!
    Regards,
    Ferenc Nagy
p.s.: Sorry for my english, I hope you can understand me!

Many thanks. Yes, let's first try uninstalling the ACE pack and seeing if iTunes will launch now.
If iTunes doesn't launch, the pack may have left behind old QuickTime version 6.x componentry in unorthodox locations in your Windows 7 system files. So we'll go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Computer.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)
