[SOLVED]Half-Life 2 couldn't run. Showed "source" screen then crashed.

Okay, suddenly I really got the urge to play this game again (I never managed to finish the game actually).
The appdb page it supposed to run flawlessly with wine. But so far, I couldn't play the game at all.
At first, I realized that I didn't have lib32-mpg123 package installed. After installing the package, the game start screen showed, but it a little off screen. Wrong resolution. So I changed the resolution to native 1366x768. As the result, the game became unplayable. Only showed the "Source" screen then crashed.
I tried to find a solution but no luck so far (well, it's almost 9 years old after all).
I got Dota 2 and Torchlight 2 installed. Both run almost flawlessly.
Here the wine log
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 9: reading configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.

Oh yeah, I have pretty lot Dota 2 beta keys in my inventory (but all of them not available for China).
How about I give some of it for anyone who can solve my problem?

I googled the error messages from your log. I suggest you do the same.
The first entry in the "Workarounds" section of this page on the Wine website is linked in a few forum discussions with people with the same fixme debug output you get, so hopefully will solve the problem. Especially disabling the in-game community.
EDIT: ChemBro raises an interesting point, though I do know a few people using Arch who can get hl2.exe-based games working with optimus.

  • How to wake ipod from its funk?  only shows start screen then dies

MY ipod won't turn on, charge up, or show up on my G4 laptop or in itunes. I try resetting it, but as soon as the start screen comes up it dies. If I plug it in, it lights up brightly and shows the start screen, then won't do a darn thing but show the start screen. When I disconnect it, it still has no battery no matter how long it was plugged in. I have the latest updates in itunes and osx. What's the deal?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

If you have had your ipod for a long time or maybe even if it is new, you may need a new battery!
I recommend calling apple or maybe this link might help:

  • Fireworks CS5 shows loading screen then silently quits

I'm trialing Fireworks CS5 while I wait for my purchased copy to be delivered and I've only been able to run it once.  When I launch the application (from Start Menu or from exe) the splash screen appears and then almost immediately disappears.  No errors are reported.
    I have tried:
Uninstalling, running CS5 cleaning scripts, reboot, re-download trial, re-installing (three times).
Using Process Monitor to locate the issue - no clues.
    Running as admin
    Disabling anti-virus.
Deleting the preferences files under my user account folder
I'm using a new laptop but running XP due to corporate policy.  There are no other instances of Fireworks.exe running.
The one time it worked was after one of the re-installs.  At the end of the day I quite Fireworks, locked my PC and went home.  Next morning, I unlocked my PC and it had stopped working.
    Please help!!

I managed to fix this myself.  For anybody else that hits this, the problem is with updaternotifications.dll.  See the second half of this thread for more info:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2717997
Essentially search Program Files\Adobe for updaternotifications.dll.  Rename to Xupdaternotifications.dll.  Problem solved.
Seems to be related to the DLL not being able to create a "Check for updates" task in C:Windows\Tasks.

  • Firefox crashes when I am trying to send e mails. It says, "Oh, this is embarrasing" when I try to sign on. Runs for awhile and then crashes. Why?

I have an HP desktop computer with Windows Vista. I started having trouble in Dec with going to my home page. Mozilla would come up with a page saying, "Oh, this is embarrasing. We cannot connec to "
So I clik on restart and I get my home page. I go to my Hotmail and read my e mails...but when I try to respond to them, I get the message that Firefox has crashed.
I can generally answer at least one e mail before it does that.
Oddly, a blue bar appears across the bottom of the screen at times and then my typing slows way down and then totally stops.
At that point, I cannot do anything...can't clik on anything, can continue typing, cant send.
If I close the e mail I get the "Firefox has crashed" message.
I have thoroughly cleaned my machine and there are no viruses or worm or bugs of any kind. I have called HP and the techs at Staples and they both say it is a software problem.
I have deleted Firefox and re installed it but it does no good. What can I do to fix this frustrating problem?
    Thanks for your help.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • Mac freezes, shows grey screen then starts back up

For the past two weeks I have had the issue of my iMac suddenly freezing for a few seconds and then it turns to a grey screen for a few more seconds before it starts back up on my user area.
All programs get shut down (which is annoying as I do graphic design so I'm usually on PS or AI and lose work I've done since last save). Programs which are set to start up automatically upon login do not start up. Thankfully firefox will start back up when I click it and continue from all the tabs I had open.
I cannot seem to find a source for this to be happening... The programs which are always running when this has happened previously are: Mac Mail, finder, Messages, Spotify, Wacom Desktop Center. This morning it happened when none of my adobe programs were running.
Has anyone had the same issue or knows what's up?
I tried to go to apple support but it said I need to pay £35 for someone to answer my question.

  • Will a blown battery stop my phone from working properly? only half loads on startup screen then crashes!

    Blackberry curve 8520 pearl

    Hello,
Well, I think it depends on what you mean by "blown". Blown up? Overheated and expanded? Or just no longer functioning good, with no visible signs of any damage?
Any of those can indeed cause this situation. To test, you need a known good identical battery to try in your BB. Likewise, an identical BB without problems, to use your current battery in. The results of this test will indicate if the problem indeed is your battery, or something else about your device itself.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Starting up shows blank screen, then nothing works

I was using my santa rosa MBP 2.4Ghz last night when every app started showing a spinning beach ball. I tried to shut down properly, but nothing would work, so I used the power button to shut off the computer. When I rebooted, however, all I got was a startup chime followed by a blank gray screen and nothing more. If I leave it the fans eventually start going nuts. If I press the power button it shuts off immediately (no need to hold it down). None of the startup key-combos work, and I've tried booting it off an external USB drive (which I just created for emergency situations and has successfully booted the computer before) but it doesn't work. I've tried resetting the SMC, although frankly I don't see how one knows if that works or not, but I did it. I also reset the NVRAM, which oddly did seem to work, even if no other key-combos worked. Any ideas?

This isn't a major addition to what I wrote earlier, it's just that I noticed that if I hold down the option key while rebooting I see the arrow cursor, while otherwise I never see the cursor.
I also didn't mention that I had tried booting in firewire target disk mode, but that didn't work.

  • I have an ipod touch 2nd generation. I'm doing a restore and deleting it keeps showing apple screen then skull apple screen and it keeps doing it that for 12 hours not. How do i fix it to stop it

i have the 2nd generation ipod touch. i wanna to restore to factory settings but i couldnt do it through itunes. So i went in the settings to rest and delete. it keeps loading the apple screen and the apple turns to a skull and keeps repeating the screen for like 12 hours or more now. how do i fix it?

The skull indicates that the iPod is jailbroken
Jailbreaking voids the Apple warranty and also means that you will not get any support from Apple, including from this Apple forum. Jailbreaking can't be discussed in this Apple forum.
Unauthorized modification of iOS has been a major source of instability, disruption of services, and other issues

I recently just got the iMAC G4. I updated the programs that it told me to when it gives you the update box. After it only updated a few of them the computer froze. Now when I attempt to turn it on, it gets to the apple screen and thats it. It stops starting up & wont go past the apple screen.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try working through this article.
Could you provide some more details of which programmes you were updating and the specification of your iMac G4 (Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info...). This will greatly help in assisting you.

  • FCP shows blue screen and crashes

    Hi,
I just bought Motion 5 because I'd like to create my own titles in Final Cut Pro X.
When I make a simple title (just a rectangle with a text above it) from 5 seconds, I just click "Save", give it a Template Name and Publish.
So far so good, I open FCP and go to the Titles Browser. There I can see the new category with my Test Title in it.
When I hover this title to see a preview, my preview window becomes blue.
When I drag the title over a video file in my timeline and play the whole project, FCP crashes each time.
Is there someone who can help me with this?

Are your apps all up to date?

  • HT1937 I have installed an app : Birdfield guide in my iPhone 4. But the app is not working after installation. It shows black screen when opened

I have installed an app : Birdfield guide in my iPhone 4. But the app is not working after installation. It shows black screen when opened. I need suggestions to make it work or the reasons for not working.

Yes TeeKnows, try deleting it and download it again. After finished installation if still shows black screen delete it out off 'running apps' by double tapping the home button and swipe it off. If still shows black screen then try fully turning off your iPad (holding the sleep button) and turn back on again.
    I hope I helped
    thanks

  • Half Life 2 won't launch on Imac 24" 2.8 Core Duo Extreme

    Hi,
Just wondering how to solve this odd issue. I have a older intel based 20" Imac and just couple days ago installed Half life 2 on it...runs awesome.
NOw for the life of me I decided to install it on my new Imac 2.8 Extreme. Everything installs fine but when you go to launch, it tries to fire up but quits.
Any help would be appreciated. I really rather run half life 2 on my 24" inch Imac because of the nice screen it has. Better for my eyes:-)
    Thanks

    Hi,
A couple of weeks later and the situation is as following:
-I updated the RAM and upgraded to 2GB
-The DVD works fine as I was able to install and run Aperture on my MacBook
-I contacted Apple Support and their conclusion so far is that they don't know what is corrupted and I should erase my HD and reinstall Mac OS X
-But when I log on as root I am able to run Aperture on that same iMac!!
Interestingly, when I install a new user account (thinking that there must be something corrupt in my account profile, settings etc.) - nothing. Aperture crashes as always.
Any idea what is different in the root account that doesn't clash with Aperture? I have checked wrx rights and they are fine. Any idea how to solve this without having to erase HD?
    Cheers

  • Half-Life 2 "The Orange Box, and Steam

Is there an "easy" way to get Steam installed?  I thought it use to be easy to install it, and it seems to be a lot harder now. I believe just a few weeks ago, you could install with a typical "wine /media/cdrom0/Setup.exe". Now I get permission errors when trying to read the DVD, and when I google it, there seems to be a lot of manual effort involved.  Previously I was using the Steam installer included with Left 4 Dead, now I am using the one in The Orange Box.  Maybe I can just install the games without using Steam, since I have the DVDs?
The instructions I found had a bunch of info on copying fonts from a Windoze box so that Steam could render itself properly, I don't remember having to do that before.
I also tried to install Diablo 2, which use to install easily.  My new box of CD's are labelled strangely, and wine can't install them. I get the same DVD permission errors.  The old CD's were labelled "Install", "Play", and "Data" (I think).  The new CD's are just labelled "1", "2", and "3".
I can post more detailed info, I was just curious if anyone had these games working using the latest boxed CD's.

tom5760 wrote:If you have Half Life registered on your Steam account, you can just download and install Steam from http://storefront.steampowered.com/down … nstall.msi and install it (google for how to install .msi files with steam).  Once you log into your account, you should be able to just download the games you want to play.
Seconded. However, I don't think you even have to have a Steam account to download the installer. To run it do:
    cd /path/to/installer/SteamInstall.msi
    wine start SteamInstall.msi
