[solved] --- help setup static ip

Hi, can someone help me setup static ip instead of using dhcp.
dhcp works fine, but I'm having a hard time with static ips.
I have 3 computers on the network, do all of them need to be converted to static?
Is there something in the router that I need to change?
Here is the bit from my rc.conf
eth0="eth0 192.168.1.80 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
#eth0="dhcp"
#wlan0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo !eth0 !wlan0)
# Routes to start at boot-up (in this order)
# Declare each route then list in ROUTES
# - prefix an entry in ROUTES with a ! to disable it
gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
ROUTES=(!gateway)
thank you

you can start removing ! from the eth0 interface and from gateway. ! means that you disable it

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • [SOLVED] Help needed with iptables rule with unusual setup

Hi I recently setup hostapd on my netbook so I could share a wireless network with my phone and I'm having trouble because my netbook is also hosting a Jetty sever (Subsonic media streamer).
    My setup is as follows
    [CABLE MODEM]===[WIRED ROUTER]=====[NETBOOK] ))))) [PHONE]
The wired router provides the DHCP server.
On my netbook I created a (br0) bridge between eth0 and wlan0 and started hostapd. That all works fine when I'm not trying to host my Jetty server on my netbook.
The netbook has the IP 192.168.0.8
The phone has the IP 192.168.0.6
I do not want to give the Jetty server root permissions just so it can run on port 80. So instead I start it instead on port 4040 and then use a iptables rule to redirect connections to port 80 to port 4040.
Before I setup hostapd on machine I used to use the following.
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 4040
However when I'm using hostapd and try to access websites on my phone its web browser is ALWAYS REDIRECTED to my jetty server. I'm not really surprised at this as the rule I mentioned above is for any destination or any source.
    I tried this rule:
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d localhost -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 4040
This didn't work. On my phone I could access websites as expected but nobody (tried external from network and internally) could access the jetty server on port 80. Does anyone know why this rule doesn't work?
    I tried this rule:
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING \! -s 192.168.0.6 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 4040
This rule worked (Redirect port 4040 connections to port 80 if the connection isn't from my phone). But this is NOT very good at all as it means I would need a separate rule for every wireless device that connected to my netbook (via hostapd). Also if the IP address of my phone ever changes this rule becomes useless too!
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Well looks like I fixed my own problem.
I added a LOG target in the PREROUTING chain like so
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j LOG --log-prefix 'cheesy-redirect'
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 80
When I looked at /var/logs/everything I noticed this.
    dan-netbook kernel: cheesy-redirectIN=br0 OUT= PHYSIN=eth0 MAC=00:26:18:73:ea:28:00:09:5b:5d:0a:33:08:00 SRC=178.102.41.92 DST=192.168.0.3 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=46 ID=51411 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=48219 DPT=80 WINDOW=49640 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0
The destination is 192.168.0.3 ! Which is very very weird. This the IP address I had told my router to give my eth0 card in the past when I wasn't using a network bridge (br0). I was connected to the network using 192.168.0.8 on br0. The eth0 interface wasn't assigned an IP address.
192.168.0.3 was also the IP address I setup for static port forwarding (which I forgot about) so when I accessed my jetty server from outside my network all packets would of been forwarded to 192.168.0.3
I should never of received those packets as I was 192.168.0.8 not 192.168.0.3 at the time of logging so how I even received these packets is a mystery to me. Maybe the router software is buggy
Fixing was pretty straight forward I changed the port forward to go to 192.168.0.8 and then tried connecting to the jetty server externally and noted in the log
    cheesy-redirectIN=br0 OUT= PHYSIN=eth0 MAC=00:25:d3:46:4d:0d:00:09:5b:5d:0a:33:08:00 SRC=178.102.41.92 DST=192.168.0.8 LEN=52 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=46 ID=65326 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=33597 DPT=80 WINDOW=49640 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0
So the correct redirect rule is
    iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -d 192.168.0.8 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 80
    which works nicely
One last question though. Does anyone know how I can use a hostname rather than 192.168.0.8 which points to whatever the IP address of br0 is set to? localhost points to 127.0.0.1 so that doesn't work.

  • [SOLVED] Question about network setup static and dynamic

I am trying to set up an Arch install on my other pc.  I have used Ubuntu and then Linux Mint for a year+ and Arch has always intrigued me so I am attempting to install it now.  I do consider myself a pretty advanced computer user/programmer but computer networking has always confused me a little.  I'm not quite understanding whether I setup my network with a static or dynamic ip.  This is what I know
I have a static ip assigned to me by my ISP but I do have a router so it assigns me a different internal ip.  Does that make my ip dynamic?
    Last edited by c26zwj (2013-03-14 18:24:35)

If your ISP assigns a static IP then your IP in the internet is static. If you have a different internal IP then your router is running a DHCP server and performing network address translation. Your IP on the LAN is dynamic (unless you configure your router to assign static IPs, which can be useful if you want to forward ports to a specific computer). You most likely want to use DHCP to obtain a dynamic internal IP when you connect. The external IP is beyond your control (it is managed by the ISP and assigned to the router) so you do not need to worry about it.

  • [SOLVED] Help with going from dhcp to static ip

So right now I'm using dhcp on my arch box, but for personal reasons (file server, print server, etc...) I'd like to assign a static ip to the machine.
I've noticed that when I get a ip via dhcp, there are different broadcast ips, and frankly, I'm just getting confused. I was wondering if there was a way (probably) to setup a static ip from setting that are retrieved via dhcp.
I know that there's a wiki page as to how to set up a static ip, but there are still some things that I don't understand, so I'd like to know what information I'd need to get from dhcp in order to set up a static ip (essentially the same ip, but it would remain the same)
I will blatantly admit that networking is not one of my strong suites...
Last edited by ZeroTruths (2009-09-03 01:20:29)

When you have a dhcp address, use ifconfig to identify the address, broadcast address, and subnet mask, and use route to identify your default gateway. All these should be added to the rc.conf NETWORKING section - an example is provided. Make a note of the nameserver address that was automatically added to /etc/resolv.conf under dhcp - it should remain there.
Before you do all that, you may have the option of using a dhcp fixed lease instead i.e. continue to use dhcp, but configure it to provide the same address to your arch box every time. That would depend on the capabilities of the system that provides the dhcp service.

I do get output on the second monitor with no xorg conf in place, and with my old xorg.conf, from before I tried setting up for a second monitor.  However, the second monitor is simply a clone of the first, while I want an extended desktop...basically one workspace on each screen in xmonad.  I based my xorg.conf on this link, mainly, which is where the second device, screen, etc sections came from.

  • [Solved] help needed with wireless setup (ralink 2860 driver)

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch so please be gentle ;-)
I recently upgraded hoping to find improved support for my wireless.  I now find that the kernel recognises and loads the appropriate module:
    [root@akoya ~]# uname -a
    Linux akoya 2.6.29-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Apr 8 12:47:56 UTC 2009 i686 Pentium(R)
    [root@akoya ~]# lspci | grep Net
    05:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2860
    [root@akoya ~]# lsmod | grep 2860
    rt2860sta 514808 1
I checked over the kernel source and the rt2680sta module is the code from ralink cleaned up for the 2.6.29 kernel.  (I tried building the ralink release but it needs patching for 2.6.29)
However getting the thing to connect using WPA is another thing altogether
    [root@akoya ~]# ifconfig ra0 up
    [root@akoya ~]# wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i ra0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    [root@akoya ~]# dhcpcd ra0
    ra0: dhcpcd 4.0.12 starting
    ra0: waiting for carrier
    ra0: timed out
I'm not even sure if iwconfig is communicating with this driver (though I can find my router using "iwlist ra0 scan"):
    [root@akoya ~]# iwconfig ra0 essid "sodor"
    [root@akoya ~]# iwconfig
    ra0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
    Mode:Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:21:91:FE:DA:97
And if I try to configure using wicd I see the following log when trying to connect to the wireless:

It is driving me crazy being tied to a cable so I'd really like to get this working... but I'm really not sure what to try.  Do I need to rebuild wpa_supplicant?  If so is there a package-based way of doing that in arch?
    Thanks in advance.

OK... to answer my own questions ...
    two questions:
    1. Does this mean support for the ralink driver is included by default or *not* included by default?
    It seems it means *not*
    2. If I uncomment this line then makepkg refuses to build the package because the config file's md5 is no longer valid.  How then am I *meant* to make modifications to the build configuration?
right or wrong I used makepkg -g to generate checksums for my modified config file and pasted these into PKGBUILD.  It then builds happily.  After installing I can run wpa_supplicant with no args and confirm ralink is in the list of drivers.  Excellent.  But still no success.
    Two things I have noticed:
    1. wicd places quotes "" around my pre-shared key.  If I run wpa_supplicant from the command line and use the conf file created by wicd it reports the PSK as being unparsable.  If I remove the quotes then the file is parsed correctly.
    2. It doesn't solve my problem :-(

  • (Solved)Help setting up ALSA to mix multiple sources to one output

    Hey everyone,
I've been putting off fixing this for a while, since getting the sound working was giving me trouble from the beginning. I'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to configuring ALSA and how the system works in general, so sorry if I miss something obvious or need something explained to me >.> As it has been I can only output audio with one program at a time, and I'd like to fix that now. Some quick research told me that I should use dmix, and adding this to /etc/asound.comf would enable it:
    pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
And I can verify that this pcm works with speaker-test -Dpcm.dsp -c 2. However, I'm not sure that programs are actually using it, since I still can't use audio with more than one program. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be listed in the output of aplay -L, but it isn't there.
There's another issue I noticed in my experiments. To get the sound working before, I had to override pcm.default to type hw, card 0, device 0. In my research and fiddling around, I noticed that in alsa.conf card 0 and device 0 are set to the defaults, and those are the ones I need to use. However, I can't remove the override since the default pcm generated by default.conf doesn't work for some reason. Also, this overridden default won't show up in aplay -L's output, or as an option in programs that have a similar list of pcm's as output device options (like vlc, or kmix).
Sorry if this sounds weird, I'm still not 100% sure what is going on here. Let me know if you need more info from me, need the output from some program, etc.
Edit: Well I found a solution. This in asound.conf:
    pcm.!display {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
    hint {
    show on
    description "dmix default"
Sets the dmix pcm as default, and shows it with a description. Still don't know why the generated default pcm doesn't work, but I guess it doesn't matter.

  • [Solved]Help with printer

    Hi!
I`m really frustrated... I never thought that installing printer can be such a paint in the rear...
Ok, now back to the point:
I`m trying to set up my Deskjet 930c on 32 bit Arch through usb. I did everything that Wiki says: installed
cups ghostscript gsfonts hplip and net-snmp
    I loaded the module
    modprobe usblp
and i see the  that the printer is connected alright

and setup my printer. I can than print a test page.
But when it comes to printing by a usual user, the "print" button in all applications is grayed out/inactive.
Also hp-toolbox is segfaulting all the time...
    Also, running a system-config-printer says:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'server-error-service-unavailable'.
The funny thing is... The only way to print something is to print it to a .pdf file first, and than printing that file.
    Any help, please?...

If that thread doesn't solve your problem, then there are a bunch more CUPS threads that are less than two weeks old that will.
omg! huge thanks, that completely solved my problem... i wasn`t actually concentrating on the firefox error, more on the cups errors that followed... thanks again!

  • HELP : E1200 static IP

    Hi,
I am trying to setup my Internet connection on my linksys E1200 router using static IP settings below -
I am getting following error when trying to do this-
    Can someone please help.
These are the IP settings provided to me and are configured on my laptop to connect to my ISP as well.
    Thanks,
    Sudeep.

    This disadvantages the native firmware.
From my own experience I would say that communication with the customer support on the firmware does not give results. One answer - not supported! To change this, they did not seem to want.
    http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/Router-e1200-PPPoE-Static-Address-problem/m-p/499...
So, I see only one solution - wait for the third-party firmware for this product, such as DD-WRT, Tomato(USB), MirWifi (?), OpenWrt. The experience of installing them on a previous version of the router (WRT series), I can say that after the flash working without problems. Сisco with their advertised functionality and support is really not up to the functionality inherent in third-party firmware. At least in the domestic market.
It is very bad. This is a serious company would focus more on support. All the more so because there are alternatives!

  • Please Help: Setup up a e-mail Server for Windows 2012 Server Essentials ??

I am currently working on a PHP site and could use some help with ideas and suggestions to solve my problem. The website that I am working on is a Members Only Site, so when a user initially signs up, the server should automatically send an e-mail confirming the user so that he/she can finish being registered. I have never set up an email server before and would very much appreciate some help. Should I install a third party app to send emails for the server, or is there a way to have my server send the e-mails? I have tried looking at videos on Youtube, but they tend to be for more experienced individuals and less for NOOBS..Please HELP!!
This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Community

    Thanks for reply Simon.
I havent been able to find a guide so I have been guessing trying to setup the email server. Basically ive tried to setup a user email [email protected] (syncuser is also the account I use to sync my calendar and contacts)
I have turned on the mail server, made a new account on my Mac in mail:
    Description: OS X Server
    Email Address: [email protected]
    Full Name: syncuser
    Incoming Mail Server: myserver.local
    User Name: syncuser
In the user account  I have added the email address.
Im guesing I have to make the mail account somewhere in the server settings but I cant find anything. If turn off SSL in the mail settings I at least get a response from the server:
    Unable to Connect
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “OS X Server” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “myserver.local” on port 143 failed (error 49: Can't assign requested address)

  • Netcfg will not setup static IP with media disconnected

The title says it all.  If I don't physically have my network cable plugged in, setting a network profile with a static IP fails.  Also, there doesn't appear to be a setting for subnet mask.
Please help, without this functionality I'm stuck back using Windows with netsh scripts, which I'm really trying to get away from.

Ok, it's not as bad as I thought.  At least once you have the static set, if the media is temporarily disconnected, it does't drop the static setup like networkmanager does.  I think I can live with this setup, although it would be nice if you could set the static ignoring the carrier signal.

My understanding is refind-efi 0.6.5 and above can detect kernel files in /boot and doesn't require it to be renamed with extension .efi. Currently, I am able to boot through /boot/efi/EFI/arch but that shouldn't be required anymore and should be safe to remove once I can get refind to work. What am I doing wrong in refind.conf that it isn't able to find vmlinuz-linux.

    Thanks.
UPDATE:- Reading and tinkering solved all my confusions. More details are in this thread.

    # loader - identifies the boot loader file

    # "Windows", and "XOM". Case-sensitive.
    # graphics - set to "on" to enable graphics-mode boot (useful
    # mainly for MacOS) or "off" for text-mode boot.
    # Default is auto-detected from loader filename.

    # quotes if more than one option should be passed or
    # if any options use characters that might be changed
    # by rEFInd parsing procedures (=, /, #, or tab).
    # disabled - use alone or set to "yes" to disable this entry.
    # Note that you can use either DOS/Windows/EFI-style backslashes (\)
    # or Unix-style forward slashes (/) as directory separators. Either
    # way, all file references are on the ESP from which rEFInd was

    # Use of quotes around parameters causes them to be interpreted as

    # keyword. Use of quotes around parameters that specify filenames is
    # permissible, but you must then use backslashes instead of slashes,
    # except when you must pass a forward slash to the loader, as when
    # passing a root= option to a Linux kernel.

  • [SOLVED] Help setting up wireless/wired

Hello everyone! I installed arch last night on my desktop and had no issues, ethernet worked during install and wireless asked for firmware. (b43/ucode5.fw , b43-open/ucode5.fw) during install i set a static IP in configuration file following the "beginner guide" after install was finished i rebooted and went to bed.
tonight when i got home i booted up my PC (damn fast!) and was assuming my LAN connection would remain. alas it didn't, I ran ifconfig and i receive "-bash: ifconfig: command not found"
i figured i'd set up my wireless because that's going to be my main source of internet anyway. so i downloaded the firmware following the "wireless guide" for my broadcom 14e4:4318 , i found out that it doesn't use the legacy driver on the kernel.org website so i followed this
    sudo pacman -S b43-fwcutter
    export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
    wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
    tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
    cd broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/linux
    sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta.o
it moves the firmware (somewhere) i reboot and i still receive gripes about firmware! any help would be greatly appreciated as i currently have no net on this machine and would like to start configuring the rest of my hardware
    Thanks everyone!
Edit:: for shits i just set eth0 to up, it's now connected to the net but my wireless issue still remains. and still no ifconfig strange!
also hello! first post, look forward to meeting you all and an exciting arch experience.

    rg_arc:
    I receive the following
00:19.0 Ethernet controler: Intel Corporation 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (rev o2)
11:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)
however, as stated in my edit on post 1, i tried
    ip link set eth0 up
and my static i set during set-up remained, from here i grabbed the BC43 package from AUR http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=21690
rebooted and now wireless is working.
Thanks for the help RG I guess if i would have waited a bit i coulda solved it without a post, but the quick response makes me satisfied in chosing Arch as my distro !
