[solved] How to install with old BIOS + 60GB SSD + 3TB HDD + fulldisk?

I'm new to archlinux and this will be my first install. I use Debian and Kubuntu, but I'm no expert. I've read many archlinux docs (and they *are good*, congatulations), but I couldn't find specifics to what I want to do.
My system is a desktop box (6GB RAM) that I use for video editing, compiling, browsing and many other unrelated things. What I plan to do is to organize things in the following way:
SSD (60GB): first disk (for a fast boot up time) with only one partition, ext4
/ and everything, except for /home and /var
HDD (3TB): second disk with only one partition, ext4
Mounted as /something
Symlinks (or bind mounts) to /var and /home
My reason to use only one partition for / and one for /home and /var is to not have to worry about balancing partition sizes among system files, user files, web server files, etc.
Could you please comment on the following:
1) It seems that I can't use a a regular partition larger than 2.2TB, so I will have to use GPT. Do I need (or is it recommended) to partition both disks with GPT? Does it work with non EFI BIOSes? Can I use a regular GRUB2 install?
2) What is the recommended way of installing arch using this set up? Do I install everything under the SSD and later move /var and /home to the HDD?
3) What is the best way to have the complete final root file system: using symlinks, bind mounts, or any other technique?
4) I deal with huge files and sometimes huge pictures and huge memory needs (Blender 3D, GIMP and Inkscape with huge files, radiosity rendering, etc). I've read that a swap partition is not needed nowadays. So I was thinking of creating just a swap file inside the HDD partition. Would it degrade too much the HDD performance or fragmentation? Could it be used for hibernation?
5) Can I use the regular arch install procedure to accomplish all that or do i have to prepare anything before/after?
6) Any other tips?
Thanks

According to wikipedia, linux has no problem booting from GPT on BIOS, and accordind to archwiki, GRUB2 provides the ability to boot from GPT in both BIOS and UEFI based systems.. I dont think that formating both disk with GPT is necessary, but I am not sure.

I would install with this approach.

In this setup (/var and /home on one big partition), I would use symlinks.

This says Google about swap file/partition performance. You could use hibernation. I allways go with swap partition, but nowadays it is just proforma, because I have enough memory to never use swap.

I think (but I'm not sure, though) parted is on installation media.

    Bredbandsbandit,
The headsets for it will need to use /8'' minijack connecters (or up to /4'' if you get the Platinum/Fatalty/Elite Pro versions). USB headsets use their own software codec, basically making them software based sound devices which would bypass all of the advantages of the X-Fi.
A really great headset choice for this would be the Creative ProGamer Headset NC22 however if you are looking for headphones I have used the Creative HN-505 Noise Cancelling Headphones with the X-Fi (I hope to have some impressions up in a few days) and they work absolutely amazingly. Basically you would do best with closed ear headphones with a good quality microphone.

  • Disk greater 8GB with old BIOS

I try to get a 40GB Western Digital WD Caviar 450AA work properly on the secondary IDE controller as a master drive. It should have the function as a data storage. I got the patch 110202-01 applied on my system, which should get disks greater than 8GB to work. It well has an effect on the system. I was able to fdisk the drive with a geometry file when the drive was set to LBA in the BIOS. Further I was able to partition the drive with the sol8 x86 native format tool - I set the 0 partition to 'usr' and got the whole disk size stuck in one partition. Thes disk was labeled, everything worked fine so far, but afterwards I was not able to build an UFS filesystem on the disk. Neither with 'newfs' nor with 'mkfs'.
Has anyone an idea how to solve this problem?

  • How to install the new BIOS for Satellite Pro M50 running Ubuntu

I am running Ubuntu on my Pro M50. Could someone advise me what the latest BIOS is and how to install it?
The BIOS upgrade site here seems to havean exe file but I couldn't see the BIOS file within?
    Thanks

Why do you want to update the BIOS?!
Do you have any big troubles with your notebook?!
The Toshiba European driver page provides BIOS for XP and BIOS for Vista.
Both BIOS versions must be executed while the operating system is running!
If you use the Linux on your notebook, you will be not able to update the BIOS!!!
    Do you understand?
Once again; The BIOS update should be done ONLY if its absolutely necessary. In other case dont update it!

  • [SOLVED] How to install and run (on debian) a separate, downlevel version of firefox for the F5/firepass VPN?

(Note: my problem is similar to [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/931534?e=es&as=aaq another current problem] except that
    * OP is running windows (I'm running a debian linux)
    * OP is asking a more general question (how to fix?) while I'm asking for details on a proposed fix)
    I'm currently running
    $ lsb_release -ds
    Linux Mint Debian Edition
    $ cat /etc/debian_version
    wheezy/sid
    $ uname -rv
    3.2.0-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Mar 4 22:48:17 UTC 2012
    $ iceweasel --version
    Mozilla Iceweasel 13.0.1
I'd like to continue running an uplevel iceweasel ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation_software_rebranded_by_the_Debian_project which is firefox]) but apparently need to run a downlevel version in order to run a particular vendor-supplied plugin. How best to do that (i.e., with minimal performance degradation, and without affecting my package management)? Or is there another way to solve the general problem (running the F5 Network Access Plugin)? Why I ask:
My employer is giving me remote access via a SecurID token and the F5 Network Access Plugin (F5NAP). The latter is in fact a browser plugin, which seems to me an odd way to implement a VPN, but it's the only offered option. Unfortunately,
    * the only browsers supported for linux are Firefox 3 and Firefox 8 (per [http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_apm/manuals/product/apm_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html this]--scroll to "Linux Operating Systems")
    * my primary laptop runs LMDE (see above) with Iceweasel 13 (from the mozilla.debian.net repository), which I want to keep. (It's the uplevel browser, dammit !-)
So I first tried to install the F5NAP on my iceweasel, hoping it was sufficiently like the listed versions. I browsed to my employer's site, logged in using the token, and followed the link to install the plugin. Unfortunately, that failed: the xpi began running, but then quit with the message
    > F5 Network Access Plugin could not be installed because it is not compatible with Iceweasel 13.0.1
Hoping for a simple workaround, I told the often-useful User Agent Switcher plugin to emulate Firefox 8, but no fix. Hence it seems like I will hafta
    * install Firefox 3 or Firefox 8
    * run that downlevel browser whenever I want remote access
    * run the uplevel browser for everything else
This definitely seems like a kludge, so I am open to alternatives. Meanwhile I'm wondering:
    # Which of the F5-supported downlevel browsers (Firefox 3 or Firefox 8) has the smaller memory footprint?
    # How to install the downlevel browser so that it does not interfere with my uplevel browser's configuration, operation, and updating via debian package management?
    # How to run the downlevel browser so that its operation does not interfere with my uplevel browser? I know firefox typically wants to run singleton.

@[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/160087 verdi]: thanks for your helpful suggestions. The "fix" (actually a kludge, but I gotta work with what F5 and my employer give me) was:
    # Install/run latest Firefox 3 (despite there being [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/932269 no 64-bit version for linux]) using [https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzDAFHgIxRzKbmJDUGZqTzhfbDg this bash scriptlet].
    # Create a [https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BzDAFHgIxRzKQjRyQndqUTJpRXM run script] to start firefox so that one can
#* choose the appropriate profile (I was unable to set it from the script without startup error)
#* run multiple instances (I don't want 3.x firefox touching my uplevel profile)
    # Run Firefox 3.x with the runner, then point it to my employer's site to install the [http://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_apm/manuals/product/apm_compatibility_matrix_10_2_1.html F5 Network Access Plugin] (restarting firefox as required).
The gnome-terminal tab from which I invoke the runner spews a bazillion "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" errors, but the plugin runs, and I can SSH normally (though more slowly) to servers on the VLAN from another terminal tab.

  • How to install an old PPD on Windows 7 ?

OK - this will be tricky.
We are a small offset print shop and use ID CS4 to both design and do our colour seperations with. We use an old(ish) Panther Imagesetter which serves us well.
We have just purchased a new PC, and as XP pro is hard to get these days, and with Windows 7 clearly the way of the future -  we have taken the leap ... especially as we have updated all our design software to CS4 I thought we wouldn't have any issues.
However .... Windows 7 will not install the old Panther PPD's - basically tells me that they're not compatible with a 64bit OS.
Any ideas ? We're a bit stuffed if I can't get this working

It's always amazing to me how discussions of PostScript bog down with Windows users.
It's either Windows users never use PostScript or some other reason I can't understand.
What is needed is a simple way to place a PPD file on Windows 7 so the user can select the option of writing a PostScript file to disk and referencing that particular PPD. We don't need or want a printer driver in this case because we are not actually printing to any particular device.
Why someone needs to do that comes under the category of "If you have to ask then you really don't understand the issue so you're probably not ready to receive the explanation."
But I'll try to explain it. We in printing have been writing PostScript files to disk since it was possible to do so.
Why do we do it? Because we don't "PRINT" to a printer. We create a file and then "SUBMIT" it to a "RIP" that lets us preview the file or or we pre-process it with additional software that might do something like imposition or color separating or whatever.
Many times we need to write a PostScript file to disk and distill it as opposed to exporting a PDF directly because either the application has no PDF export or we need controlls for the file creation that are not in the export dialogs.
Sometimes it's a more complex issue of flattening transparency when the export function is supposed to do it but doesn't work correctly. I know that comes as a shock that an aspect of expensive software might not work correctly and we have to use a work-around but trust me, it happens.
Not meaning to start a Mac/Windows holy war but this is so easy to do on a Mac. You just place the PPD in a directory and it's becomes available to the application with no need to install a printer driver.
Now it appears that someone is finally suggesting it might be as simple as:
    1. Drag your PPD to the following path:  c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\x64\3
I'll try this an pray that it really is this simple.
    And it is.
So, we don't need to install the Adobe PostScript (or any other) printer drive to make a PPD available to Indesign for the purpose of writing a PostScript file to disk.
    Life is good again.

  • Qosmio G20 - How to install with one single HDD and without RAID?

I want to set up Qosimo G20 new with Windows XP 32.
I bought a new harddisk and put it into slot 1. I would like to run it without any RAID (so slot 2 is empty)
XP installation CD did not discover the HD
I entered BIOS to see if the HD was there - The HD is recognized normal
then I thought I have to change RAID to JBOD (page 3 BIOS) but this did not work
I confirmed it with the 1234 key - but nothing hapened.
In another task they said to install RAID-drivers (pressing F6... while starting XP installation)
I put the drivers on a USB-stick - but the system will not discover it (and there is no floppy drive)
I have no idea how to install XP on this Laptop.
    Any hints?
    Chris

    >I put the drivers on a USB-stick - but the system will not discover it (and there is no floppy drive)
Win XP does not recognize USB flash memory while setup. This is possible since Vista OS so either you will need a USB floppy drive or you will built a new Win XP CD and will add the RAID driver using the nLite software.
Here is a nice FAQ how to add the RAID (or SATA driver) to using nLite.
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB85017Z0000R01.htm
Note: this describes how to add the SATA drivers you have to add the RAID drivers so dont use SATA driver but RAID driver
    Good luck

  • Support för Palomino core with OLD bios?

    I have a question regarding MS-6380 compability
with the Palomino core with and old BIOS.
The problem is that my Tbird 1000MHz just burned up
and I haven't updated my BIOS at all, and now I in
pursuit of an new CPU. I dont remember what version it
is but I'm sure that its older than the 6380v15 that is
supposed to add support for "Palomin CPU support 1.5GHz -
    1.7GHz".
    So my questions are this,
will it work if I put in an AMD 1500+ or 1600+ cpu
(with the Palomoni core but no Higher clockspeed than
1400 Mhz)? Will it work long enough so I can update the
BIOS? Or will it not work at all?
In short will the Moderbord work at all with an Palomino
based CPU, even with a old BIOS (probably ver 1.0)?

    Hi!
The XP1800+ will normally work at 1533 MHz, assuming a fsb of 133. If fsb is set to 100, the result will be 1533/1.33 = 1150MHz approximately.

Sorry about that, I had read a lot of the wiki but I had no idea how to install a package from the AUR. The console was very upset when I tried to install mingetty as the root user, so to install it as another user changing the permissions on each and every installation file took a long time. However I got there in the end. Thanks for your help.
For anyone who like myself is running Arch Linux and Openbox, in the end I didn't need mingetty to boot straight into X Openbox, so I've now uninstalled it. I only needed to folow the instructions in the Arch Wiki at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_boot (second section using etc/inittab).
    Here's my etc/inittab:
    # /etc/inittab

So now I just press the power button and end up in Openbox in about 50 seconds (for some reason my motherboard takes 30 seconds to get to the Grub menu, then as Arch boots it takes a good 10 seconds to get a wireless connection up). Press the power button again and it automatically shuts down! (see http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Shu … wer_Button - I don't know if this closes X properly but anyway it works)

  • How to install Lion OSX on new SSD without install disc

    TL;DR
I need a way to install Lion on a new SSD without an install disc, and how to format it without a Mac.
Hello, just yesterday I opened up my MBP 13" Mid-2010 running 10.7.(4/5) (Not sure which it is, but I think it is 10.7.5) and the first thing I saw was Skype tring to sign in. It looked fine, untill I took a second look and I heard a strange clicking noise coming from my computer. The Sykpe signin page said "Disc I/O error" or something like that. I instantly knew there was something wrong with my hard drive. Tried rebooting, grey screen, strange clicking noise like most people with hard drive failure. I was devistated. It has worked minutes ago, then my brother gets off, I open it up,and the hard drive has failed. After I got over the initial shock, I googled "hard drive replacement" after searching for a while, I noticed most sites just showed how to UPGRADE your hard drive, cloning it and all. Well, heres my main problem. I had no time to clone. Luckily, I had started backup up a month ago, and all my data is safe on my external hard drive, but this is only a time machine backup. No OS. Now, most people can just put in their install disk and voila! But, I, sadly, do not have my install disk. No idea where it went, I just don't have it. So, I was wondering if there was any possible way to make a bootable USB or disk without having acsess to a Mac, or having to buy a disc. I bought Lion, and I'm hoping that there is a way to download this and put it on a USB, then boot my computer from it. Now, my second problem is formatting. I have no idea how to format my SSD, let alone without a Mac. If there is some way to format an SSD so that it will work with a MacBook Pro, that would be great.on a PC
IMPORTANT: No, I don't have ANY install discs, the only one I had, for Snow Leopard, is gone. And no, I don't have access to ANY Macs to format the SSD. Finally, I would really love to be able to do this all cost-free, as I have already purchased the Lion, and dont feel like buying a disc for it again.

    Yes. See below:
    Drive Erase for Lion/Mountain Lion
    1.  Wait until the Main Menu appears. This could take quite some time because you are doing all of this over an Internet connection. You should use Ethernet if possible. It's much faster than wireless. Select Disk Utility from the Main Menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select the SSD main entry (mfgr.'s ID and size.) Click on the Partition tab in DU's main window. Select One partition from the dropdown menu under Partition Scheme.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
After the above has completed quit DU and return to the Main Menu. Click on the Install/Reinstall OS X option then click on the Continue button.
You should be all set if there are no glitches.
