[SOLVED] Incorrect kernel version on core repository?
I went on kernel.org this morning after I read a message somewhere about kernel 3.2 rc1 and noticed the "Latest Stable Kernel" is 3.0.4
I'm thinking to myself "odd... didn't I upgrade my arch to 3.0.6 not long ago"
First thing I did was went here
http://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/ … ages/linux
and on line number 9
_basekernel=3.0
and on line number 17
source=("ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/linux-${_basekernel}.tar.bz2"
and then I went to ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/
based on the PKGBUILD file ( from my point of view )... your only downloading "linux-3.0.tar.bz2" yet you've labelled it 3.0.6-2 ( "-2" being archlinux second revision of "3.0.6" ) in the core repository when really the latest version is 3.0.4 and we're actually using kernel 3.0.0
am I missing something or what the hell is going on?

Please enlighten me.

With spl{,-utils} and zfs{,-utils}, upgrading leads to circular dependencies. This can be worked around by always building the packages in a chroot, but it is a bit more work than a normal module add on from the AUR.
But while demizer's repo is super duper convenient, he is human and doesn't always get to updating the packages as soon as the new kernel drops to [core]. So from time to time, you will have to patiently wait for the unofficial repo to be updated before you can update the linux package. That said, I am pretty sure he versions the dependency on the linux package, so I don't think that you can install the new linux package and then end up with a non-working filesystem. Rather, the attempt to upgrade the linux package will fail due to unmet dependencies.
Edit: As a disclaimer, it has been a while since I have played with zfs. So while I think this information is accurate, things may or may not have changed.

[SOLVED] Troubleshooting kernel panics since 3.4
All kernel versions since 3.4 have been absolutely unstable on my machine. A panic might happen right during bootup, or if it boots up, there will be random segfaults all over the place, followed by a panic no later than 20 minutes or so from bootup. I have been forced to use kernel 3.3.7-1-ck, which runs perfectly fine. I haven't done any particularly rigorous diagnostics of the problem because watching the system fail repeatedly is not very fun when I can just revert to a working setup. However, these are the observations I've come up with over the months:
- a typical panic dump looks like this (although the "spurious ACK" like is new - in the few other screenshots I've got there is nothing prior to the hardware errors, or the first line is no longer on screen);
- it happens with the same symptoms on LiveCDs - I've tried Arch 2012.10.06, Ubuntu 12.10 and Mint 14.1 disks, all panicking during bootup or shortly afterwards (Arch 2010.05 loads fine);
- I've run Memtest overnight since the problems started and it came up clean;
- as mentioned, kernel 3.3.7 works fine, as does Windows 7 that I double-boot with;
- it is not GPU related - I previously had other problems with Radeon HD4850 and suspected it might be involved here, but the problem persists after a recent upgrade to GTX 650Ti;
- going by my pacman.log, I've definitely tried using (and then reverted to 3.3.7) kernels 3.4.2-1, 3.4.3-1, 3.4.4-2, 3.5.2-1, 3.6.3-1, 3.7.1-3, 3.7.4-1 from repo-ck, as well as other versions from core repo that I can't reliably keep track of;
- system info:
Motherboard: Asus P5Q-E
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400
RAM: 5GB in 3 sticks (2+2+1)
GPU: GTX 650Ti (Radeon HD4850 until a few weeks ago)
Storage: 2 SATA HDDs, 1 SATA SSD
IDE optical drive
Sound card: Creatve Audigy LS
External devices: PS/2 keyboard, USB mouse, USB Wacom Bamboo tablet, USB external HDD
Any suggestions how to further investigate and/or solve this problem are welcome. I'll be happy to provide any other information that might be useful.
EDIT: blacklisting acpi-cpufreq module did the trick.

First of all, it appears that 3.7.4 doesn't recognize CPU frequency right, showing 670 MHz instead of 3 GHz. Also, 3.7.4 has a "dtherm" flag instead of "dts". No idea what to make of it.
@mich41: thanks for the suggestion. I may try that later, when I have a bigger block of time to spare. -
Kernel versions and rogue modules
Hello.
Can anyone tell me why the kernel-headers package and the kernel26 package never seem to carry the same version?
Right now in current, kernel-headers' version is 2.6.20.X while the kernel26 is at 2.6.21.
Also, why do I always have a directory in /lib/modules/ of the name of the next kernel version? (in this case /lib/modules/2.6.21-ARCH while I'm at 2.6.20) .
I've had numerous problems around this over the last few months. Today it happened again: I just installed gspcav1 from the repository tree, which is a webcam module, and the module was installed for kernel 2.6.21 (in /lib/modules/2.6.21-ARCH/**/usbvideo/gspca.ko), which I'm not running yet. I really wish I didn't have to upgrade my kernel for this sort of things.
Can anyone help?External module packages are provided for the current kernel package only. If you choose to run an older kernel, any modules that you have already installed will continue to function as expected, but if you need to install new ones, as with gspcav1 above, you will need to either build it yourself or find the previous version of the package somewhere.
You have a /lib/modules/2.6.21-ARCH directory because that is where pacman installed gspcav1. There are no "rogue modules" here, simply an incorrect expectation of how module packages are handled. -
Automatic upgrade of AUR packages dependent on kernel version.
I have an issue with upgrading AUR packages with pacaur. When I try to upgrade with one of the following commands:
pacaur -u [package_name]
pacaur -Su -a
pacaur -Syu
I keep getting the error 'no results found for dependencies)'
Here an example output:
[ ~ ]$ pacaur -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
:: Starting full system upgrade...

:: spl-git: requires linux=3.17.6-1
:: zfs-git: requires linux=3.17.6-1
:: Starting AUR upgrade...
:: resolving dependencies...
:: no results found for dependencies)
As seen in this example, the system upgrade is failed due to two kernel packages which require the previous kernel version.
I wonder, does the AUR upgrade fails after the failed system upgrade because of new spl-git and zfs-git packages require the new kernel version? And the message ":: no results found for dependencies)" is caused by this?
It seems there is a kind of a circular dependency in this case - kernel doesn't upgrade because of zfs requires the older kernel, and zfs doesn't upgrade because the new version of zfs requires the new kernel.
Previously I upgraded AUR packages manually, by first removing them, then upgrading the kernel and after that installing new versions of packages.
Is it possible to automatically upgrade kernel packages? If so can this be done with pacaur?

I don't really know if I want to remove the package first, while running the machine from a zfs filesystem.
If it runs automatically the chance of me making an error is a little smaller, don't really want to have a not bootable system. -
Why does external modules not depend on a specific kernel version ?
Hi,
I'm quite new to Archlinux and there are a few things I don't understand about the way pacman handles kernel and modules packages.
I understand that modules in the repository are only build against the current kernel version and that you should update both at the same time to keep your system in a working state, however I don't understand why the package system does not enforce that.
For example if I look at the current nvidia modules (100.14.19-3), it will install its stuff in lib/modules/2.6.23-ARCH and hence (should) depends on kernel26>=2.6.23.
However if I take a look at the package itself, it only depends on kernel26.
If I upgrade the modules without upgrading the kernel or upgrade the kernel without upgrading the modules, I will break my system.
In my opinion (but I may be missing something) the package manager should be robust and should make sure your system stay in a coherent state.
Is there a technical reason for this or is this only to avoid having to modify the packages dependencies each time a new kernel is release ?Very interesting, I was right when I said I was probably missing something
As I said in my first post, I'm a new archlinux user. I'm more familiar with debian/ubuntu systems.
The way they are solving this kind of issue is simply by putting the kernel version number in the package name.
For example you have nvidia-kernel-2.6.23-1 which depends on linux-image-2.6.23-1.
This solves these kind of upgrade issues (I did a search in the forums before creating this thread and I saw there were a hell lot of kernel/modules dependency issues that have already been reported by other users).
The advantage of this system is that you can keep both the old and the new kernel package on your system at the same time are revert to the previous version if something goes wrong.
However the drawback is that you have to maintain several versions of the same package in the repository at the same time, which may be contrary to the archlinux philosophy... -
Please help me solve my kernel panics
I have been having kernel panics almost daily for about 2 weeks and I can't figure out what to do. I have tried repair disk, repair permissions and no luck. I ran software update and everything is updated.
Here is my latest panic report. Any help would be great.

Kernel version for my sp levels
Hello,
I am running SAP server 6.40 on Solaris (64bit EX2 for Oracle) with 327 Kernel Version.
I have work processes that crash when executing a specific abap program.
As it may take time before sap dev support find the bug, I would like to test
with an old kernel (319) on my DEV system.
I would like to ensure that my support packages can run with the 319 Kernel.
Where could I find the minimum version of kernel needed by a support package level?
Thanks in advance for your answer.>

Hello,
The OSS message has been opened last week.
The other options are also to downgrade as we suspect that it is a new bug.
This is why I have posted my original question.
Do I have a way to find out if it is ok to run HR 5.00/SP 79 with Kernel 327?
Another option is to upgrage only the dispatcher & work process as I can get a version above 347:
dw_355-10004725.sar
But I am not very familiar with these upgrades.
Can I use dw_355 with my 327 other binaries?
See you, -
[SOLVED] Arch Kernel Configuration
Hi, I'd like to compile recompile the Kernel but I would like to know wich are the default configuration settings that the compiled kernel26 of the core repository has. I would like to tweak some things but starting from that configuration not from the defaul Kernel configuration found in www.kernel.org.
I would like to know it ABS could be used to do it, or if I can get a configuration file somewhere and use it with ABS.
Thank you very much.

Ok thank you very much! I've found the configuration within the ABS package. The I can edit it running make menuconfig (or the GUI configurator) and then save the edited file as config (in my case, if it was a x84_64 it would be config.x86_64.
I had to change the checksum for that file in the PKGBUILD file in order to it to work.
It's now compiling!
Another question... Does it uses the CFLAGS defined in /etc/makepkg.conf when compiling the Kernel? I hope so...
Once more, thank you very much for all!
You can also use the ABS PKGBUILD, and add the "make menuconfig" option to be able to change the -ARCH settings.... then when you press exit it will save (and use) your newly created .config.
# load configuration
make menuconfig
# build!
So it will load the default -ARCH generic setup and then you can modify to your hardware specs.
My AMD64 300HZ -Os Low-Latency kernel:
$ uname -osrpmi
Linux 2.6.28-ARCHtestAMD x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Uninstall the software associated with this according to the developer's instructions. Often, kernel panics are caused by third party kernel extensions which are either deprecated or incompatible. Note that you should also have pairs of RAM modules installed, IE either (2x2GB or 2x4GB for your model). Non-pairs can make OSX unstable.

[SOLVED] Custom kernel & nvidia
Hello.
So i wanted to learn about kernel building for a while and finally decided to jump in. (also i am a new Archlinux user)
I read the wiki and wanted to try the "traditional" way first so i grabbed the 3.10.0 vanilla tarball and thanks to the wiki, successully compiled and booted it. (i didn't bother trying to start X at this point).
Then i wanted to use the Arch "abs" way because i wanted to build my custom kernel from the same Arch stable kernel sources (nothing in the 3.10 gives me a boner and the stable arch sources are enough "bleeding edge" for me).
I followed the wiki procedure and built my linux-3.9.9-1-custom.tar.xz package, then i installed it without any issue. Finally i updated GRUB2 and booted this kernel to make sure it was working.
Well, it was.
At this point i knew i had to build a custom nvidia package to make X working so i followed the wiki procedure to build it.
Here is my PKGBUILD:
# $Id: PKGBUILD 189199 2013-06-29 10:08:46Z foutrelis $
# Maintainer : Thomas Baechler <[email protected]>

sed -i -e "s/EXTRAMODULES='.*'/EXTRAMODULES='${_extramodules}'/" "${startdir}/nvidia.install"
gzip "${pkgdir}/usr/lib/modules/${_extramodules}/nvidia.ko"
However when i tried to run makepkg, i got the following error:
If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
on your system.
If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.
*** Unable to determine the target kernel version. ***
After messing around for quite some time, i discovered nvidia was expecting stuff in the follwing directory:
/usr/lib/modules/3.9.9-1-custom/build/
But the build dir did not exist. I looked into the 3.9.9-1-ARCH and found that the build dir was indeed present in the stock kernel directory.
Since i was stuck i tried the following:
ln -s /usr/lib/modules/3.9.9-1-ARCH/build /usr/lib/modules/3.9.9-1-custom/build
and ran makepkg again: it built the package with no issue, so I installed the package.
I rebooted my machine thinking this ugly hack solved my problem.
I was wrong...
When i tried to start X i got this error (using the custom kernel):
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia': Exec format error
Here's the full output:

Last edited by BGK (2013-07-06 23:12:54)Did you install the kernel headers when you build the custom package? You need something to build against, and that /usr/modules/3.9.9-1-ARCH/build is a symlink that is owned by linux-headers. It points to /usr/src/linux-3.9.9-1-ARCH. So by symlinking that "build" from ARCH to custom, you are effectively building the module against the wrong headers.
Check to make sure that you have installed the headers as well as the kernel. The PKGBUILD for linux will build multiple packages (linux, linux-headers, and linux-docs). I like to have all three, since the docs package contains some amazing information and is totally worth the ~16MB of space. Do you have a directory set for storing built packages? It is probably a good idea, so that you can keep them around.
BTW, installing headers using the "traditional method" would include issuing the "make headers-install" command as root (from the source directory of course). Did you do that?

[SOLVED] Custom Kernel failed to boot
Hello everyone, this is my first time compiling my own kernel, I was afraid of breaking the base system so I followed the guides on the wiki
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … n_with_ABS
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cus … n_with_ABS
:: Running Hook [filesystems]
:: Loading root filesystem module...
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda4'
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel paramter.
ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device '/dev/sda4'
I have tried to make an intrid by makeinitcpio -k <my kernel version> -g kernel-SLAB.img but that didn't really do anything.
So I'm just wondering where I have done wrong, the kernel error messages are pertty cryptic so I have no idea, I would really appreciate any help I can get right now.
Here's a list of the files that I have used or related to this problem. Thanks all!

Update, HELP NEEDED
To be on the safe side, I decided not to apply any EXTRA patch at all, so I used the kernel26 from /var/abs/core/base/kernel26, ONLY changing the package name and the features I wanted, (I changed the generic m686 MARCH to MK8 (amd semperon processor) and KEPT everything else as is to the .config file in /usr/src/linux-2.6.23.12-ARCH/.config
The package compiled fine but again, but I can't boot properly, giving the same error as previous attempts. The mkinitcpio generated an image that I can boot with the original kernel that came with Arch, but not the kernel I compiled.
I noticed that during boot, when loading udev, for the original kernel, there's a lot of messages showing modules being detected etc., but for my compiled kernel, there's only one message loading the PS2 keyboard, and nothing else, the HOOK filesystem was ran immediately after that. Is there anyway to capture those initial boot messages? Thanks!
I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.
Update
Kernel sucessfully compiled with the help of fwojciec, thank you.
Last edited by blu3ness (2008-01-15 05:42:38)I can only really tell you how I do it -- I'm not exactly an expert with in-depth knowledge of how kernel works
The way I compile the kernel is by adapting the PKGBUILD for the current kernel from the ABS. I use the script from this thread (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=34815) to rename the kernel and add "make menuconfig" command to the PKGBUILD; I also manually add some patches. If you want to use this script be careful: is a bit old and last time I've tried it changed "kernel26" to kernel26-[myname] in few some source addresses which obviously was not good but also not really difficult to fix.
When I compile the kernel like this I can just do "mkinitcpio -p kernel26-[myname]" and this generates the image without any problems.
Sorry -- that's the best answer I can give you. Perhaps somebody else will have ideas what needs to be done using your method to get the kernel to work. Maybe just looking at the script will give you some ideas... -
Darwin Kernel Version 13.3.0
Hi guys and girls,
My iMac is constantly crashing! It happens 5 times a day at least. Does any of you bright sparks know anything about this? Darwin Kernel Version 13.3.0?
Im aware it may have something to do with time machine, or back ups? Ive taken all the different usb's out and it still crashes. I can post the rest of the crash report if needed.
Cheers in advance for the help.
CamboThanks for the quick reply. This is what I got.

J2ee Kernel version is SP13 and Visual administrator verison is SP18
Hi Experts! recently we had applied SP18 (initial level SP14) in EP system via SDM but when I try to connect J2ee_admin gives a popup message as "j2ee kernel version is Sp13 and visual admin version is SP18) Why?
I had updated Kernel upto 185/Unicode/700_rel via usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc/ntamd64 only but i havn't updated new files via usr/sap/SID/JCXX/exe, even though both places are showing latest level via disp+work command.
Can I update j2ee engine 7.00 SP18 again. please give proper solution to solve this issue. My environment is
Windows X64/DB2/Unicode/700.
Thanks.Problem solved.....error occured due to the "j2ee core700" patch..........
thanks. -
