[solved] Install PHP5.2 and PHP5.3 on dev laptop

I have been using Arch for a few months now on my laptop and really enjoying it, but I am still a little confused about a few things when it comes to software versions.
I have a bunch of PHP apps that need to be updated to be PHP 5.3 comparable. So I would like to setup both PHP 5.2 and PHP 5.3.
I have searched a lot assuming that I am not the first person that would have asked about this kind of setup, but failed to find anything that was Arch specific.
I have read about two ways of doing this on other distros.
One method involves setting up both version to be different CGI handlers in Apache and then setting the appropriate handler in your virtual hosts.
The second sets one version to use mod_php (php-apache) and the other as a CGI handler.
I have found both php version as packages and in AUR.
So, if I install both packages (php and php52) will there be any conflicts or problems or do I need to use the AUR packages and some how alter the install/configure scripts.
Additionally what would happen if I install one of the php modules EG: php-curl. Will the module work for both version.
I am currently leaning towards using mod_fcgid for both versions.
Thanks.

OK, I figured it out. I think this topic should probably be under "Creating & Modifying Packages" and it was probably a mistake on my part to have posted in this forum in the first place.
What I ended up doing was to rebuild the php52 package in community using ABS. This was my first time use ABS.
I followed the instruction on the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Build_System
The only thing I did that was not in the wiki was to delete the src directory when I did a rebuild, else it tried to re-apply the patch's, it took multiple attempts to get the PKGBUILD correct and not conflicting with PHP 5.3.
What I ended up with was a PHP package that installed everything into /usr/local.
I dont know if the way I did it was correct or the best way, but it seems to work.
Personally I think it would be best if the current PHP52 package was created in such away that it did not conflict with the main PHP package since it is very common for a LAMP setup to have more than one PHP versions installed.
Here is my modified PKGBUILD if anybody is interested.

After all that, I setup mod_fcgid and 2 test virtual hosts, one for each PHP version.
My setup was semi based on this tutorial http://2bits.com/articles/apache-fcgid- … ation.html
I ended up doing it with 3 Apache includes, excluding my vhosts include. I don't know if it is the best way of doing it, but considering this is a dev machine and I was going for easy management of PHP versions with multiple vhosts, I think this setup works well.
If anybody is interested here is my apache conf files.

In order to get suspend function, I try to compile a new kernel, I used the second method in http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ker … rom_Source with makepkg and pacman. I download 2.6.31 kernel and makepkg is OK, but pacman tell me /lib/***(lots of

First off - you should _never_ use the default name when rolling your own kernel, _always_ give it a unique name! (this way, you can always go back to your previous, working kernel/modules) - by the way - have you tried booting the fallback kernel?
One safe way of keeping your own data - boot from a live cd/usb stick without involving the current OS at all. Then use an external usb-drive (hey - these days you can buy a 1TB usb drive for less than 100 bucks - it's a no-brainer!) and copy all the data you are concerned about to the usb-drive.
Once that is done you can start experimenting - or just plain and simple reinstall or try to reinstall the original kernel. If some of your partitions wont mount (private data), then remake to ext3 _after_ having backed it all up.
I have not looked at the wiki, but I'm sure there is some warning about kernel naming - at least I _know_ that subject has been discussed in this forum.

  • [Solved]Installed X, LXDE, and Openbox, still no desktop

Went through the beginners guide a lot more carefully and figured out how to do all that, but what did i do wrong? I rebooted thinking that I would get regular desktop items, but all I got was still a command line interface.

Do you start it? I'm guessing not, so the next steps would be:
    - Try searching for runlevel if you want it to start automatically
    - Look at Openbox / LXDE's entries if you want to start them manually
    - Keywords to "make your own DE": xinit, startx
    To hard for now?
Try xfce (or gnome, or kde) first, I don't know about lxde & openbox but the "big three" definitely bring their ready to run scripts with them (see xfce/gnome/kde wiki entry for easy ways to start them or have them started automatically).
    Have fun!

  • Install PeopleSoft (PeopleTools 8.49, FIN) on 40GB laptop?!

    Hi all,

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi all,
Never done PS install myself before and wondering if
a 40GB laptop be enough to install PeopleTools 8.49
    along with the Financials module?
    Thanks in advance.Hi,
I am demoing PT 8.49, Weblogic 9.2, Tuxedo 9.1, MSSQL Server 2005 Express with HCM 9.0, CRM 9.0 and ELS 9.0 on it.
Database Dirctory is a whopping 6.4 Gb for all three databases. FinSCM should not exceed that by much.
Bea Directory is 1.4 Gb big.
The PeopleTools Directory is the biggest, encompassing the span of 16.1 Gb
MSSQL Server 2005 Express takes 0.5 Gb of space.
So without Crystal or other BI tools that comes down to a net size of 24.5 Gb on my laptop.
Windows XP Profesional takes another 4 Gb on my machine.
The Data Folder under %PS_HOME% is 6+ Gb big, a candidate for compression.
The Projects File is another 2.7 Gb big
The verity indexes for German, Dutch, French and English indexes take another chunk of 2.2 Gb of the %PS_HOME% place
After building your Database you can remove the corresponding data files.
So, yes, running PeopleSoft FinScm 9.0 should work fine on a machine with 35 Gb disk Space free.
    Cheers & HTH
    Peter

  • How to install php5 on clean 10.4 Server install?

Can anyone walk me though the steps of installing php5 (entropy version) on a clean install of 10.4 Server updated via software update to 10.4.x?
I'm clearly doing something wrong as the last three attempts php5 says it installs and then apache fails to start up.
As this isn't my area of expertise I'm at a loss as to what exactly I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks

did you check /etc/httpd/httpd.conf to make sure the entropy php commands were appended to the end of the conf file?

  • Problems installing PHP5 with oci8

    Hi!
I know I've probably overlooked something completely obvious, but when following the instructions given in this site to install PHP5 with Oracle and Apache, when it comes to the 'make' command, I get the following error:

Hi! Thanks, but yes, that's in order. A couple of questions, though:
    1. Does PHP5 work with Oracle 9.2? Would I need to upgrade to Oracle 10?
    2. I'm assuming that the definition for OCI_STMT_CACHE is to be found in the oci8 libraries and not in the PHP package. When I make a search for this, I come up empty. I'm wondering if I need to updgrade my oci8 libraries (currently with 9.2 package)?

  • [SOLVED] Having trouble installing both Steam and Desura

I've been trying to install these but both are apparently having the same issue, maybe it's a KDE problem (I'm using a KDE setup) or something?
I get a message like for libpng12 which is needed for Desura:
File /var/cache/pacman/pkg/libpng12-1.2.50-4-i686.pkg.tar.xz is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)).
    For Steam I get this:
File /var/cache/pacman/pkg/steam-1.0.0.45-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz is corrupted (invalid or corrupted package (PGP signature)).
Then it asks if I want to delete it, and either choice prevents me from actually installing.
EDIT: I ran these two commands and tried installing steam again and had no issues.
    pacman-key --populate archlinux
    then...
    pacman-key --refresh-keys
Last edited by felixculpa (2013-12-07 21:16:06)

I think it's a signature/keys issue, I deleted the gnupg key directory and refreshed the keys and synced and updated. Then when trying to install steam I had to import PGP keys, and the signatures are of "unknown trust." Then I still get a corrupted package message afterwards. I'm thinking I will just disable signature signing and then trying to install, then reenable signature signing afterwards... I'm a little wary of this because of possible security issues.
EDIT: installs and making the package for Desura run fine with signature checking disabled but I wonder if there is some kind of security exploit thing going on with them?

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
    PHP.INI
    [PHP]
    ; About php.ini ;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
; Directive names are case sensitive - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; | bitwise OR
    ; & bitwise AND
    ; ~ bitwise NOT
    ; ! boolean NOT
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants after the line that loads the extension.
    ; About this file ;
; This is the recommended, PHP 5-style version of the php.ini-dist file. It
; sets some non standard settings, that make PHP more efficient, more secure,
    ; and encourage cleaner coding.
; The price is that with these settings, PHP may be incompatible with some
; applications, and sometimes, more difficult to develop with. Using this
; file is warmly recommended for production sites. As all of the changes from
; the standard settings are thoroughly documented, you can go over each one,
; and decide whether you want to use it or not.
; For general information about the php.ini file, please consult the php.ini-dist
; file, included in your PHP distribution.
; This file is different from the php.ini-dist file in the fact that it features
; different values for several directives, in order to improve performance, while
; possibly breaking compatibility with the standard out-of-the-box behavior of
; PHP. Please make sure you read what's different, and modify your scripts
; accordingly, if you decide to use this file instead.
    ; - register_long_arrays = Off [Performance]
; Disables registration of the older (and deprecated) long predefined array
; variables ($HTTP__VARS).  Instead, use the superglobals that were
    ; introduced in PHP 4.1.0
    ; - display_errors = Off [Security]
; With this directive set to off, errors that occur during the execution of
; scripts will no longer be displayed as a part of the script output, and thus,
; will no longer be exposed to remote users. With some errors, the error message
; content may expose information about your script, web server, or database
; server that may be exploitable for hacking. Production sites should have this
    ; directive set to off.
    ; - log_errors = On [Security]
; This directive complements the above one. Any errors that occur during the
; execution of your script will be logged (typically, to your server's error log,

Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with FGLRX and Ati HD4650

Hi! I'm fede1587 and I'm a new user of Archlinux (but not a new user of Linux). I love it and the KISS philosophy.
Four days ago I intalled the new version of Arch but unfortunately I have a very big problem and after 4 days of work I have not been able to solve it.
I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW41J with a ATI HD4650. I need Ati proprietary drivers, because with the open source ones, the laptop become too hot. After installing the catalyst legacy pakages (234k, catalyst-utils and catalyst-hook) both from AUR and from the repository (following the great guide in ArchWiki) and configuring, when I lanunch startx, sometimes Gnome starts and sometimes I got black screen with horizontal lines.
I'm searching for solutions from 4 days and I read a lot of topic, and I try a lot of things, but nothing!
Accourding to the various threads, I have:
    1) Load the module fglrx
    2) Blacklist the radeon module
    3) Re-run mkinitcpio
    4) Run aticonfig --initial
    5) Run aticonfig --acpi-services=off
    6) Add nomodeset to grub
After I tried to change kernel (thinking about some incompatibilities). I installed linux-lts, and I try with this kernel, but I have the same issue. I also try whit Bridge Linux, but nothing changed.
This is the only output found in my error.log (Xorg.X.log is empty):

  • [SOLVED] Problem with UTC and CST

I probably made a mistake while installing Arch Linux and the clocks in my computer are all a mess.
Right now the UTC time its 6+ hours, I changed it in the bios to the right hour but that give me -6 hours in the local time thats displayed in Arch Linux and gave me the right hour in Windows 7.
    timedatectl
Local time: Fri 2013-12-20 12:33:12 CST
Universal time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12 UTC
             RTC time: Fri 2013-12-20 18:33:12
            Timezone: America/Mexico_City (CST, -0600)
         NTP enabled: yes
    NTP synchronized: yes
    RTC in local TZ: no
          DST active: no
Last DST change: DST ended at
                      Sun 2013-10-27 01:59:59 CDT
                      Sun 2013-10-27 01:00:00 CST
Next DST change: DST begins (the clock jumps one hour forward) at
                      Sun 2014-04-06 01:59:59 CST
                      Sun 2014-04-06 03:00:00 CDT
PS: Already did everything in the wiki and tried with some [SOLVED] posts.
Edit: The problem with this its that when i use Windows 7 (to play DotA... or using the iPod, since no player can edit the files in the ipod) the hour is 6+ hours, that causes problems with the configuration in the ipod since each time i connect it the clock (that its also my only clock) changes to 6+ hours. Its maybe irrelevant for someone but i would like to have the right hour in all my systems.

I am with Scimmia, everything looks correct.   But, If you boot Windows, it will try to change the BIOS clock to local time unless you tell it otherwise.
Edit for both of your edits.  Yes, fix windows

  • Snow Leopard fails to install - Tech Support and Genius Bar can't fix it

I am having an exceedingly difficult time installing Snow Leopard. I have tried everything I can think of and tech support AND the Genius Bar have failed me so far.
    The Details:
Every time I install SL it starts off well but sometime between 18 minutes remaining and 6 minutes remaining it fails. I get an error message that says there was an error that prevented installation. Looking in the installer log gives me a little more information. It usually has 15 or so errors, the last of which is always a very long line saying some package failed to install/unpack/be copied. The odd thing is that the file name is different every time.
    So far I have tried:
    Repairing the disk and installing
Installing from a different install DVD
Installing from external hard drive at the Genius Bar
Installing using RAM borrowed from the Genius Bar
Wiping the HD completely. I erased all my partitions and tried to install on a completely blank hard drive with a single HFS+ partition
I can only think of a few things that can cause the install to fail: DVD, optical drive, RAM, files on HDD, and HDD hardware. I think I've eliminated all those possibilities except HDD hardware. Changing that on a MacBook isn't trivial and I don't have one handy. Also I would think a HDD problem, or any hardware problem, would cause all sorts of errors and with the exception of this the machine has no serious problems and apps crash only occasionally. I've had no system crashes for as long as I can remember.
I have a Time Machine back up and have successfully restored my old Leopard System onto the MacBook (twice now) so at least I have the option to just give up on SL if I want to. As an aside, restoring from TM went well but not perfectly. Next time I install an OS I will be making a disk image backup. Does anyone else have any ideas? If you solve this problem I'll be eternally grateful and very impressed.
    Thanks in advance
    Jay

I'm sorry. I should have answered when you asked about RAM the first time. I have 2GB. I have tried installing with that, and I tried installing with RAM at the Genius Bar. I don't know how much the guy used at the Genius Bar.
Last night I restored from time machine so I currently have Leopard installed on the machine. After the restoration my email archive is little strange, I had to re-authorize iTunes and various other annoyances pop up but it runs without any problems.

If it is any consolation this started happening to me today. I am in Toronto. I am wondering if there is a copyright issue here. I have done nothing to solve it - mostly because I suspect this has nothing to do with my computer.
p.s. My speculation about copyright is not correct. Comedy Central plays fine with Google Chrome. Have not yet tested Firefox.
