[SOLVED]internet share

I followed the wonderful guide at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_Share and I can now share the wireless internet from my Arch box to my Windows box. I have the exact setup as the guide so the card forwarding packets on the Arch box has IP 192.168.0.1 and the windows card has IP 192.168.0.2. I can access the internet on the Windows machine and I can ping the Arch box at 192.168.0.1. however if I try to ping from the Arch box to the Windows box with:
ping -I eth0 192.168.0.2
or:
ping 192.168.0.2
it just hangs. It doesn't time out or say it can't reach it, it just sits and does nothing. I would like to share my keyboard between the machines using Synergy but if I can't ping I don't expect to be able to set it up.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can get pings to go through?
Thanks in advance for any replies!

Perhaps the firewall on the windows box is ignoring (dropping in iptables parlance) pings?

  • [SOLVED]Internet share from linux to windows 7

    hi,
    i want to share my internt connection from my arch linux netbook to my win7 pc
    I succesfully followed this wiki article( https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_Share ) until: 'Assigning ip addresses to the client pc(s)'.
    now i'm stuck with my linux netbook being fully configured, but i can't get my win7 pc to connect properly.
    Idk maybe i need to configure the netbook in a different way in order to make it work with a windows client???
    maybe
    ip addr add 192.168.1.0 dev enp8s0
    instead of
    ip addr add 191.168.1.0/24 dev epn8s0
    or an additional iptables command? (FORWARD ACCEPT maybe?)
    Here's some data about my netbook in order to make it easier for you:
    internet device: wlp2s0
    internet device ip range: 192.168.2.x
    lan(which conects my netbook to the win7 pc) device: enp8s0
    thank you for your time.
    regards b0b

    you're on the right track, but the devil is in the details.
    Basically you have TWO separate networks, but the internet share wiki page implicitly describes a 1 network setup.
    the first network  has the netbook lan & the windows lan device in it.
    your second network has the netbook wireless and the router in it.
    If you want to stick with 2 separate networks, you'll need to setup the netbook as a router, check the wiki router page.
    Warning : setting up your netbook to function as a router will require you to understand/learn networking basics.
    In both setups, the netbook wireless device will need to be setup with a STATIC ip-address.
    Internet sharing setup :
    make sure all devices are in the 192.168.2.0/24 network .
    ex :
    router 192.168.2.1
    netbook wireless 192.168.2.2
    netbook lan 192.168.2.3
    windows 7 pc 192.168.2.4
    Follow the internet sharing page in the wiki.
    Once you have setup things , verify if you can ping 192.168.2.1 (router)  from the windows pc.
    if you prefer using 2 separate networks, check the wiki router page.
    hi,
    thank you for your post.
    How do you know the wiki implies a 1 network setup?
    the wiki says 'The first 3 bytes of this address cannot be exactly the same as those of another interface.'
    I actually don't want to stick with 2 networks, since i don't want to waste 1gb of my hdd for the router software.

  • Internet Share - Can it share WiFi internet rather...

    Hi, I have the Nokia Lumia 800
    Can I recieve Wifi internet and then "Internet Share" it to 2 Laptops?
    Reason why is that I am at a motel & I'm wanting to use my phone to allow 2 laptops to access the 1 internet connection.
    Only 1 Device may access the connection
    Or is it only able to Internet Share Mobile Data?
    Thanks Daniel

    As the guy said only one device be it laptop/smartphone/tablet allowed for every guest in hotel. allowed. Even if you didn't told them, they can do that thru  mac address filtering. Having lots of device accessing a Wifi Hotspot degrade speeds. It also deter those who just loiter hotels just to gain free internet. In some small hotels, where there is no IT person to do the job, one can connect as much devices as one have once he gets the password.
    Ahh! I see. I have personally never come across this in any of the hotels I have stayed in. Mac filtering would be difficult to implement because it would be impossible to exactly pinpoint the exact location of every signal down to the nearest room, unless they are every guest to register a mac address. Perhaps then a bit of mac cloning might to the job.
    Anyway, still of the opinion that a second set of transceivers and antennas would probably not fit in the current sized package which will render it unfeasible since most users do not require this feature. It would have to be the size of a typical router/repeater. Would make more sense to have it in the laptops where there is more space available. Don't think I have come across any laptops with double radios either.

  • Hey i have a iphone 4s 64gb but and using the internet share .. how can i change the nat type from strict to open please help me :)

    hey i have a iphone 4s 64gb but and using the internet share .. how can i change the nat type from strict to open please help me

    You will have to configure that with your router. Type your router's IP address in the search/domain bar and allow port forwarding.
    What is requiring you to have an open NAT? That issue is usually for gaming consoles, etc.

  • Internet share stopped working after IOS7(iPhone)

    Hey. Before i updated my iPhone4 to IOS7.0.2 it could easily use internet share to both my laptops. but now, i can only use to one of them.
    Well.. if i'm lucky. i can for 3 minutes on the other. then it jumps off again. for like.. hours.. then it can be on 3 minutes again.
    When i use "failuresearch" on my laptop it comes up with different things.
    That i should try turn it off, that i should check if it's the right password, that i just can't connect and some other reasons.
    I've tryed for weeks to make it work somehow now.. i and don't know what to do.
    Hope any of you can help me!
    Thank you!

    Hey NickD227,
    Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like there may be some debris in your headphone jack - as the phone seems to think that something is plugged in.
    iPhone: No sound or distorted sound from speaker
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts5180
    1. Verify that the volume is set to a level you would normally be able to hear.
    2. Ensure that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack or the dock connector.
    3. If the iPhone is in a protective case, make sure that the speaker port isn't blocked by the case.
    4. Make sure that the speaker and dock port aren't clogged with debris. If necessary, clean it with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush. Carefully and gently brush away any debris.
    5. If an audio issue occurs when using a specific application, try testing other applications to see if the issue persists.
    6. If the iPhone is paired with a Bluetooth headset or car kit:
              - Try turning off Bluetooth.
              - If you experience difficulties with the Bluetooth feature, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    7. Restart the iPhone.
    8. If restarting doesn't fix the issue, ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS.
    9. If the issue is not resolved after restoring the iPhone software, please contact Apple Support.
    If the issue persists, please follow the last step by contacting Apple Support for support and service options.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Palm Pro locks up IE on Internet Share

    I have a new Palm Pro and after I set it up for internet share on an XP Pro system it will do great 1 time, After disconnect my system will show all is ok but will not allow IE to display pages. I have to do a system restore back to before I installed 4.5 Sync and then again works 1 time. I tried on a Vista system and it works fine. What is the conflict with XP Pro and Palm's OS?  Today the Palm started to vibrate and had a blank screen. remove the battery and did soft reset I lost my contacts but that appears to be it.  This is my first smart phone and I am still in the learning curve stages.

    I can't tell from your response whether you tried my suggestion. Usually Windows XP tries to connect to all the available networks, but sometimes you have to give it a nudge. One way to give it a nudge is to use the Repair command for the network connection that isn't connecting automatically. Another, more involved method is to log off and log back onto Windows (without restarting Windows completely). I was suggesting the easiest way, but if that didn't work, you could try logging off and on again.
    Edit: This article gives the steps for repairing a network connection in Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/repair.mspx
    Note: if you use the Intel widget for your wireless connection, rather than the Microsoft widget, it should have its own repair option.

  • HT1178 Internet share from Mac to iPhone?

    Is it possible to share internet from Macbook to iPhone without Router ? How ?

    If you have 3G wireless stick or connection via ethernet it might be possible to setup ICS to share with iphone..
    BUT you clearly are running the Mac as a router.. chances are a router for $50-100 will do a better job at less wear and tear cost to you and the laptop.
    See ICS for Mac.

  • [SOLVED] Samba share problems

    Hey guys,
    So I've been trying to create an unauthorized set of samba shares, I've managed to allow a guest user to connect to the drives without authentication however files that I copy from outside the shares cannot be modified by my guest. Is it possible for me to allow guests to modify files that do not belong to them? my example is below;
    cp /etc/motd /home/shares/downloads
    ls -l
    -rw-r--r-- 1 sam   users 406 Feb 16 02:29 motd
    -rw-rw---- 1 guest users   0 Feb 16 02:37 test.txt
    I attempt to modify the motd and it will not let me save apologies for any sheer stupidity, I'm still fairly new to this. Below is my smb.conf
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

    Hmm, seems that the linux user account and the samba account passwords need to be identical for this to work? if I define no password for the samba account sam and if it has a password on the linux box itself, it will not work :S am I missing something?
    Also might be worth taking note that if a conflict exists between the password then it also renders my other account such as guest inaccessible, I've got it back to working the way it was before
    EDIT: I've managed to get this working, for some reason once I needed to remove the sam account that I created within smbpasswd - once I had done this I was able to use sam as the guest account? Samba is a little bit like pissing in the dark sometimes Ahh well.

  • Has anyone been able to internet share when the internet source is a verizon USB modem?

    I'm on a macbook 3,1 running OSX 10.6.8
    internet is coming from a verizon USB modem/dongle model UMW190.
    I have gone through the steps for internet sharing - created a network, etc.
    My other devices (a roku box and an ipad) are able to see the wifi network i created.  prompts for a password, and i'm able to connect with great signal strength, but no internet!
    Tried every problem solving suggestion i could find on the messageboards.
    No firewill.  Changed the IP address. restarted, etc etc.
    nothing can seem to get my internet working on the other devices.
    If i leave it to automatic, the IP address i get starts with 169. and a message reads
    "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.156.212 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
    Could this be because the internet is coming from a USB dongle?  Is my computer too old?
    Has anyone been able to get their internet sharing working using a verizon USB dongle?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Update: For the heck of it, i tried connecting using my ipod touch - and it works! able to connect to the network and get on the internet.
    (that was after i changed the IP from automatic 169 to the IP address of the USB modem.)
    The ipad still won't connect (i'm told it may be due to a WEP non-compatibility)
    and i'm not sure what's up with the Roku...
    but it does work on one device.

  • How do I setup a secure wireless AirPort network that allows internet shari

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to setup internet sharing over a wireless Airport network between my flatmate's iMac and my G4 Powerbook. We both have Norton Confidential installed, which includes a Firewall feature, which may be making this more difficult.
    I thought I understood the basics of setting up secure Airport network, and the basics of Internet sharing. But with all the variations I've tried, I've only ever managed to create a secure network that won't share internet, or a network that shares internet but doesn't seem to be password protected. I never seem to get all three, and I can't figure out why.
    From startup/login on both machines, what are the steps I need to follow?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

    You enable wireless security on the base station, by using the AirPort Utility. You basically have four choices: None, WEP, WPA, or WPA2. (Note: These are in order of least to most security.)
    Here are the basic steps:
    AirPort Extreme Base Station Setup (AEBSn) - Wireless Encryption
    Setup the AEBSn
    Either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    AirPort - Wireless
    o Wireless Security: <None | WEP (Transitional Security Network) | <b>WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
    o Wireless Password: <enter your desired password>
    o Verify Password: <reenter your desired password>

    I want to share my internet for my phone,and the Air doesn't have a wired line .there
    is no solution to my question in the internet.

    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Go to 'Sharing'
    3. Click on 'Internet Sharing' (leave the box unchecked for now).
    4. From 'Share your connection from' choose 'Built-in Ethernet'
    5. From 'To computers using' check the 'Airport' box
    6. Open 'AirPort Options' (bottom right), name the network. (Once it all works, go back and assign a password).
    7. Now, check 'Internet Sharing' box and turn on AirPort. The AirPort sign on the iMac menu should turn into an arrow.

    FYI: archlinux is widely known for our excellent wiki.  Be sure to check there and search the forums before starting new threads.  Many problems can be solved with a good search.
    As a second FYI, I don't know if the use of the manjaro boards (linked in OP) was just a coincidence of what your previous search gave you or if you are using Manjaro.  If it's the latter there are many differences between Manjaro and Archlinux.  In this case they are similar enough to share a solution, but in other cases we would be unable to help you here.  In short, if you are using Manjaro, be sure to ask on their forums if you have future problems.

  • N81 And Internet Share Via Bluetooth

    can share my pc internet on my N81 Mobilephone ?
    i have gnubox.it work on N73 ! but my n81 have pocketdata !

    One more thing i'm gonna have you do before I write out a whole step by step.. Go to your system preferences on your macbook. Then click the security tab, click firewall, then click advanced.  Make sure you are allowing your internet sharing/named services.  It should say allow connections.  If that doesn't work... I guess since I got 15 minutes i'll try to bust this out quick......  Did you try going to set up bluetooth device once again?  Even if it says its already paired do it again.  Once your Iphone and Macbook are paired again.  On your Iphone go to settings/general/bluetooth click on your connection and wait till it says connected.  Grab your macbook then Open system preferences and go to sharing. Now you can click internet sharing on the macbook "I also have bluetooth sharing on, but it sounded like you had already covered that part". When I don't pair them first before clicking internet sharing it doesn't always work..  You Should Have Internet!!!!       Just incase it still isn't going I got time for one more tip... On your macbook you can go to system preferences/ network and right click on the little gear on the left side by the + and - buttons.  Make sure your bluetooth pan is active. You can set the service order as well to move the bluetooth right below airport.  Hopefully that helps I don't have time right this second to write everything out.  I have a feeling it was probably your firewall or something I explained above.  Have a good day!
    P.S.
    I will re-edit my post when I have more time.  Sorry for jamming it all together with bad grammar.  Hopefully you can follow for now.

    Below I have posted the simpliest code I could make in five minutes for a proxy server that might work. This is just one of a million ways to do this. Note: This is just me typing here, it took only five minutes. I did no testing or checking of the code.
    ServerSocket localServer = new ServerSocket(8080);
    Socket localSocket = localServer.accept();
    BufferedReader localIn = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(localSocket.getInputStream()));
    PrintWriter localOut = new PrintWriter(localSocket.getOutputStream());
    Socket remoteSocket = new Socket(localSocket.getHostName(), 80);
    BufferedReader remoteIn = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(remoteSocket.getInputStream()));
    PrintWriter remoteOut = new PrintWriter(remoteSocket.getOutputStream());
    while(localIn.ready()) {
        remoteOut.println(localIn.readLine());
    while(remoteIn.ready()) {
        localOut.println(remoteIn.readLine());
    }

  • [SOLVED] Internet access upon authentication

    I am in a campus. To access the internet, a web-based authentication is required. They give us a url when entered in a browser it will direct us to a page which asks our username and password for authentication, if successful, we can access internet. Can anybody explain to me or point to me some other resources on how it works? Is it a proxy?
    Let's come to the practical problem. Is it possible to get authenticated in the command line without a browser thing?

    I was asking (quite lazily) the same question to myself some time ago... How did you solve it? Does your page use https and/or javascript? Mine has both...
