Solved - ipw2200 + wep + linux-2.6.15-ARCH

Hi, I tried to get wifi working with the arch-kernel. it's working fine with a custom built kernel, but i cannot get it working with the achrlinux-standard-kernel (kernel26).
I'm loading the following modules through /etc/rc.conf
MODULES=(ide-cd firmware_class arc4 crc32c ipw2200 ieee80211 ieee80211_crypt ieee80211_crypt_wep speedstep-centrino cpufreq_powersave cpufreq_userspace freq_table cpufreq_ondemand)
while booting i get the message that the module "firmware_class" can not be found and the following error message from the network:
:: Starting Network                                                                [BUSY]
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.
                                                                                       [DONE]
thanks in advance for your help
martin
Solution:
eth1 is eth0 ;-)

having said all that ...do u think compiling the kernel myself would provide any improvment for me???? ( I am haveing freezing and instablility problems..ive used 3 of the arch kernels....check out my thread  titled Arch Instable.. (please)
p.s.  btw Welcome

So I downloaded vanilla and this worked fine.
I was wondering if make install script will use mainitcpio however this did not work either as install.sh script is looking at /dev/hda which is read-only installation device (cd/dvd)
So I copied vmlinuz and system.map and generated img file manually.

There are no "provided sources" in Arch. /usr/src/linux-<kernel_version> contains only those elements of the compiled kernel that are required to build against, so getting the source from kernel.org is the right thing to do.
If you want to build a kernel package that uses mkinitcpio, like the official Arch kernels do, you need to create a PKGBUILD, or modify an existing one, and use ABS (Arch Build System). The wiki has all the details.

Anikom15 wrote:You can share swap, /boot, and /home. You could even get away with sharing other things like /etc but that's a little risky (and pointless). All Linux distributions have the same filesystem layout; you just have to make sure there are no file conflicts, and distributions have their system files layed out differently. You can use different kernels with one distribution with no separate filesystems as well, if all you want is a different kernel.
Sharing swap is only okay if you're not using hibernation (to swap) though.

  • [SOLVED] Share Multiple Directories With Samba On Arch Linux and XP

    Hello,
I have had the worst luck so far with Samba, which is far more likely because of an error on my part than on Samba's.
I can only seem to share one directory regardless of how I setup my smb.conf. And worse yet, if I mess with Samba, smb.conf, after the first time I set it up it doesn't work again until I reinstall my OS. Now I'm sure that reinstalling isn't the only option, but I haven't figured out how to make it work again any other way. I've tried uninstalling it, deleting it from the cache, deleting /etc/samba and so on, still can't connect to it from XP when I reinstall it.
I'm running Arch64 and I want to share some directories with a laptop running Windows XP.
I want to share my home folder, but have it accessible from XP only by me, share my mother's home folder, and have it accessible on XP only by her (well actually I guess it needs to be accessible by both, since i'm the admin), share my media-server (a collection of five hard drives where I store movies and such), and have it read/write by both of us. And finally share /srv so I can work on that from the XP computer as well. I think that's all. And I would like to share printers between the two computers. I would also like to access XP files from here.
I've always been able to get the media-server to share, but that's it, nothing else. And it doesn't always work right. It doesn't seem to want to follow sym links, but like I say if I mess with it it will stop working all together. So I'm not sure what to do.
A thought was to instead make a /media/samba-share directory and share that, and inside it have symlinks to my home, media-server, etc. However, that will only work if samba will follow symlinks for me.
Here is the smb.conf I am planning to use at the moment:
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
    # read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
    # Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
    # Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
    # to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.

Well it seems that my trouble all started when I began using the 'printable = yes' option for shares. Since I removed that the troubles seem to have left me.
Does anyone know why that is listed as on option in smb.conf here:
    # A publicly accessible directory, but read only, except for people in
    # the "staff" group
    ;[public]
    ; comment = Public Stuff
    ; path = /home/samba
    ; public = yes
    ; writable = yes
    ; printable = no
    ; write list = @staff
As well as in a few other examples if it doesn't work? I seen the example and assumed that option was needed to print from those shared directories.
Also, it seems that the comma is not needed between the 'valid users' names.
Also, I guess it wasn't Windows XP's fault either but rather my own ignorance. I like the idea of blaming Windows better though.....
I hope this servers to help others to aviod my mistakes.

  • [SOLVED] external USB HDD fails to install arch w/boot device ERROR

I've been working on installing arch linux via an external USB harddrive (specifically seagate free agent go 320GB) for 1 week now, and everytime I failed - until TODAY! thankfully I found this post, where user Dieter@be references this link, which displays BUG ID#17231 at the top titled "Can't boot LiveCDs 2009.08 (/dev/archiso doesn't show up)". the bug report states ::
I can't boot the LiveCDs 2009.08, neither netinstall nor core.
When it tries to access /dev/archiso it shows these messages:
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
reading further thru this bug report, I found a very insightful post by Heiko Baums (cyberpatrol) where he says the following, and I quote ::
Problem found. The link /dev/archiso wasn't created.
    After
    ramfs$ cd /dev
    ramfs$ ln -s sr0 archiso
    ramfs$ exit
    it continued booting correctly.
And sg was also loaded after this. ;-)
as you see, the bug report was for the CD version, not the USB version - yet, my issue with the USB bootdisk was the same, (no matter which boot disk I tried = netinstall, core, .img, .iso, etc) meaning I got the EXACT same error = "ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ..." ! well, I figured that I'd try one of the new fancy ISOs found @ http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ - specifically I use/used archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso.
upon running Unetbootin from windows 7, and choose to install the ISO archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso to my first partition on my USB harddrive (that first partition being FAT32, and had already been set as bootable previously), that completed successfully. I rebooted, and choose to boot from USB drive, the ISOlinux bootloader came up as normal, I choose DEFAULT and off it went.... sure enough, it errored out at the same place as listed in the bug report ::
:: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
this time though, I issued the following 2 commands ::
    ln -s /dev/sdb1 /dev/archiso
    exit
from there, EVERYTHING worked as it should!
to recap: the solution for me was create a symbolic link pointing /dev/archiso => to my partition which held the archlinux netinstall (which is where I told Unetbootin to install it to)! done and done. I felt this needed to be posted here, as I could not find this solution after MANY google searches, archlinux wiki searches, forum searches, etc. honestly, I think it would be prudent to have this tidbit of information added to the Install from USB stick archwiki page as a side note to those that may run into this issue.
this is not the FIRST time I have run into this problem with a USB install of archlinux, but this is the FIRST time I found a fix! thanks to all the great posts I reference here, without this information I dont think I would have been able to install archlinux on my new alienware m11x laptop.
    -peace-
PS: no amount of rootdelay=XX  nor pmedia=usb  nor usbdelay=XX would work in my above attempts either.

FAT16 here. Parted Magic sees my USB drive as sdd. I tried your way and surprise, surprise, it didn't work.
    ln -sf /dev/sdd /dev/archiso
    mount -t vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt
    mount : Invalid argument
I thought maybe you meant mount -f vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt instead. I tried it too, it resulted in a kernel panic.
What else can I try besides installing from a IDE/SATA CD drive ? Because this issue is NOT solved. At least not for me. Wonder if "archlinux-2010.04.05-netinstall-i686.iso" from the here will solve it (really hope so).

here's what i found so far:
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo wireless radio module: http://zwobbl.homelinux.net/pub/ (main site: http://rfswitch.sourceforge.net/ )
Acer Hotkey driver for Linux: http://www.cakey.de/acerhk/
Linux on an Amilo M-7400 laptop: http://tuukka.iki.fi/linux/amilo.html
thank you very much in advance!

  • [Solved] Graphics driver (nVidia) problem on fresh Arch setup

    Hi,
I have installed Arch as main OS about 2 days ago following usual installation wikis. PC is fully functional except for problems with graphics driver (nVidia 340xx) for example just now it took about 3 to 4 boots to get into desktop like 1st boot: did not show sddm, 2nd boot: showed it with colored (white/red/green/blue) pixels, 3rd boot: broken desktop and 4th boot: finally working (see two screen images taken from mobile at the bottom).
    Details are as follows:
    1. Kernel:
    Linux archos 3.18.6-1-ARCH x86_64 GNU/Linux
    2. System info:
    Cinnamon desktop 2.4.6
    AMD Athlon 62 x2 4800+ processor
    RAM 3 GB
nVidia GT218 (GeForce 210) graphics card
    3. nVidia packages installed:
    From official repos:
    local/nvidia-340xx 340.76-2
    local/nvidia-340xx-libgl 340.76-2
    local/nvidia-340xx-utils 340.76-2

Before posting to forum I also tried nouveau following usual Arch Wiki. End result on nouveau is even worse than prop nvidia driver (see screen shots).

    Thanks and this worked!!
Passing vmalloc=256m and change in xong.conf provided good results. lspci -v shows same output regardless of adding vmalloc to kernel:

Last question for my understanding if you can answer:
    1. My GeForce 210 card has 1gb memory. Is 256m is coming from system RAM or coming from 1gb GPU's own memory. If case is latter, do you think making it full 1gb will help performance (like gaming ,etc)

  • [solved] Can't set up dual boot Arch + Win 7 on separated disks

    Hello everybody,
I'm new to this amazing project as I installed Arch just two days ago (and everything works like a charm in linux).
Anyway I have a problem and I'm very sorry to bother you with another question such this, but I tried everything and I accurately read the wiki.
The problem is that I can't manage to create a dual boot in grub with Arch on the first sata disk and Windows 7 on the second disk.
Before trying Arch I used ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with the same Windows 7 on the same secondary disk (the pc is a dell XPS L702X 17' laptop with, of course, dual disk bay) using GRUB2 which was automatically installed during ubuntu installation.
I tried to chainload windows disk in grub using map command to let windows think it's on the primary disk and not on second one.
At start I just had "BOOTMGR missing" error, then I put windows disk as primary removing arch disk and I repaired its bootloader: windows could boot then.
When I substituted disks and tried to boot, Windows 7 loading screen appeared and immediately I had a blue screen of death (or something similar) which anyway disappeared in less than a second (I was not able to read anything from that screen)
Now, when I try to boot windows either with grub or trying to enable boot straight from second hard drive in BIOS, I receive an error stating that it is necessary to use the windows repair disk to fix problems.
My question is: how can I finally fix this situation?
It would be quite important, for me, to not format neither of the disks, and I could even accept to renounce booting windows from grub as it would be ok even changing BIOS priority every time I need to use windows 7.
I really apologize for my annoying question but I really tried everything I could find without success; sorry for my poor english, too.
Anyway, this distribution seems just amazing to me! Thanks for your time.
    Luca

It worked!!! Actually I don't know what changed, I proceeded removing the first disk (arch) WITHOUT, this time, changing the position of the windows disk. I used windows 7 DVD to repair the second disk. It tooks several attempts since it failed without specifying the problem. Eventually, I was able to boot windows 7, everything worked. Then, I plugged the primary linux hard drive and booted into arch, where I used "grub-install /dev/sda" as root. It executed without errors, but when I checked menu.lst file, surprisingly I discovered that it was not changed at all by grub-install.
Anyway it must have detected windows on /dev/sdb, since I am now able to boot both arch and windows without problems.
It was a weird situation, but anyway it worked well!! Thank you for the support, I really appreciate!

  • [SOLVED] Sluggish database update times since new Arch install

Hi guys, this time I write to ask something about pacman that i find unusual.
Happens that I decided to reinstall my Arch like 2 months ago, and since then pacman takes a real longer time that it used to just to sync the databases, to be more accurate this sluggishness presents not when the progress bar is downloading the new DB, but between DB downloads (e.g. it takes about minute from the time it finishes downloading the core DB to when it starts to download the extra DB.)...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the support.

Try using rankmirrors to set up a good number of the fastest mirrors for your location, for me this changes everything!
I live in europe so I first delete every other mirror in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, then I enable all leftover mirrors and run:
rankmirrors -n10 /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist #-n10 to only output the 10 best, change this number to your likings
for several times and replace the resulting 'overall top-listed mirrors' list in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
Hope this does the trick for you too!
ps. You need python to use rankmirrors, I recommend you read the rankmirror man-page for further options
Well, it seems to me that this solved the problem. I had uncommented some lines at Czech Republic but live in Mexico, so that was lagging the pacman operations a lot. But now its fast as usual.
    Thanks for your help

I am using the 2010.05-core image. I tried installing on a different machine and it worked. I swapped the harddrive and it worked this time, but i received the following error before the arch boot screen came up.
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 82944
I must have missed this error the first time by not paying attention, because the process continues after repeating the error a few times.

  • Crux Linux : the origins of Arch Linux?

So in this awesome linux timeline I found that Arch Linux was a fork from Crux Linux... now I dont have any idea how was Crux Linux, because I never tried it, I think the distro never was very popular, so I was wondering if someone would explain how was the origins of Arch Linux and its relation with Crux Linux

I've used Crux before I ever heard about Arch........It's not too bad, just that it's a one-man show with a gathering of faithful users.........Per Liden, the author and developer of Crux, was not interested in pleasing the general public, which is why it never became popular............He just developed it mainly for his personal tastes and anyone who wanted to use his selection was free to do so, and can make any other pkgs they want with the 'pkgmk' script..........Today, Per is retired from from Crux development and handed it over to a core team......
    @Husio
Anyway, if you don't use abs/aur you won't like CRUX becouse there's only some base packages.
Not entirely true........The official pkgs are contained in three separate repositories - core, opt, and contrib - and "opt" and "contib" contain quite a few packages......
Then there's a lot of community-based user repos, usually named after the person who is sharing it to the others.........You can see who the maintainers are in the 'Maintainer' column of that repository link above.......Although now I see there are a few more categories maintained at the main ports database, while the rest are maintianed at each individual's site.........I suppose more changes will happen, now that Per has "retired"....... ;-)
If I was to compare it to Arch, today, I would give Arch a higher rating......Arch has come a long way in the last few years, and is, IMHO, ahead of Crux in maintainability..........I've always been a devoted Slackware user, for the most part, and have tried a few other distros (including Arch) in the past, but always went back to Slack.........However, currently I'm switching to Arch as my desktop distro of choice because it's at the point I consider it better, overall, than Slack (which, to me, is saying a lot about how far along Arch has come)...... :-D

  • [SOLVED] Access media from both Windows and Arch?

I'm hoping to get a new laptop around summer time, allowing me to sort any niggles out before I start uni in september. I've been using Arch Linux for a while, and really like it now - it totally stopped by habit of distro-hopping anyway
However, I'm taking Computer Science, and think that it could be beneficial if I had a Windows partition on this new laptop, aswell as an Arch partition. The main problem with this is - How could I set this up, so that my media is kept on a partition of it's own, which could be accessed by both the Windows partition AND the linux partition? Is my only option to use NTFS? Or should I try Ext3, with one an ext3 driver in Windows? Or is there an even better solution?
    Thanks,
    Pritchard92

Well, I think I trust Linux a lot more than Windows, in terms of data integrity (...) That way, Windows can perform any filesystem checks
    Aren't you contradicting yourself here?
Since NTFS write support is considered stable, I think it is the best choice as long as you don't need permission control (which only partially works with NTFS).
Make sure you're using the "ntfs-3g" driver since there is still the old "ntfs" driver around which does not have write support.

  • [solved] sharing internet from windows computer with arch laptop

Title is descriptive I think. Stuck on windows on my desktop because I did a thing and don't feel like fixing it yet
I used ICS but the laptop couldn't access the internet and I read someplace that it only works between a windows client and host, and I couldn't find how to do it between a windows host and linux client of any sort.
If it's relevant I'm using a regular yellow ethernet cable (forget which one that one is) and my desktop has a gigabit ethernet card.

If you want make your laptop as access point, then see here
Otherwise, from the Arch side, the wiki is the best place to start from.
Or see this topic is of your interests.
If these are none of your intents, please explain which is the computer and OS connected to internet and which is the computer and OS wants to access the internet.
What are the results of your trials, what steps have you done ?
More details of your doing and targetted answers will be the result.
Modern NICs don't need cross cable, the NIC will detect and self adjust the connection. If one of the two PS is less modern then you need a cross CAT5 cable.
