[solved] Light GTK alternative to GIMP

Hello,
Which applications would you consider as light but still comparable to GIMP?
I looked into the wiki and there seem to be a variety of them out there based on QT but far less based on GTK which are actively developed.
I just tried xpaint but it takes a lot getting used to with regards to usability.
For me a good alternative must allow for basic image editing such as cutting, adding shapes, changing size...
On Windows for these things I used to have Paint.NET. Although there is Pinta which comes very close to Paint.NET it uses Mono which again is not light either.
What do you use for basic image editing?

Thanks for all your responses.
What do you mean by "light"?
Is Gimp in your opinion using too much RAM, or starting up too slowly, or requiring too many dependencies, or has a too bloated user interface, or in what way is it not light enough?
I would say a combination from all of these. It takes a while to start, the user interface is bloated and confusing. Most of the function of GIMP I have never used.
PS: There's an AUR package called gimp-devel-light that compiles a bare-bones version of Gimp with many optional features excluded, thus requiring fewer dependencies and probably also less RAM & startup time (though I haven't tested). Is that along the lines of what you're looking for?
I built it but could not note any subjective difference in speed and usability. It did not feel lighter in any perspective.
PS: Have you gone through the list of graphics editors on the wiki? (Also, if you end up finding an alternative that is not listed there, be sure to add it!)
Yes as mentioned in my initial post.
For situations where interactive editing is not needed, you can use the CLI imagemagick/graphicsmagick for mass image processing.
Thanks but I am explicitly looking for interactive editing.
I use Pinta. It starts up WAAAY faster than the GIMP.
I only started using Pinta recently, once I finally overcame my "OH NO I just CAN'T install a piece of software (Mono) to use ANOTHER good piece of software!" problem.
If Pinta works and does what you want then use Pinta.

Unfortunately for now I could not find any adequate alternative...

So I'm trying to install vbam-gtk, the package for visualboyadvance, which is available to pacman directly. It's not an AUR package, nor are any of it's dependencies according to it's package page. But when I run

Now, if I search for it via the archlinux website, I can see that sfml exists in the repository, and so does vbam-gtk, as in the link above. Now, I could just download them both from there and be done with it, but then I wouldn't learn anything, so I'm here to ask, if these packages exist in the community repository, which I have enabled and have pulled from previously, why can't pacman find these packages? I know it isn't a network issue, or at least not an obvious one. I did
    sudo pacman -S xorg-xkill
to test that theory but it processed faultlessly.

  • [SOLVED] No GTK themes on KDE

    Good morning.
I'm having a rather odd problem, one which I have yet to encounter.
I use KDE as a desktop, and when I start a GTK program using KDE tools (such as a launcher, or KDE's run command prompt) the program starts without being themed.
When I start the programs from a terminal, they are themed properly.
Has anyone a clue as to what's wrong with my setup?
    Thank you.

    Oh, sorry.
It was a bad environment variable - gtk-qt-engine generated a file in my ~/.kde/env directory which manipulated an environment variable. Deleting this file solved this issue.

  • [SOLVED] Borderless GTK 3 windows MATE + compiz

Hello, I have an issue with some application: they have no window borders.
Not all of them, but for example zenity has no borders, and cairo-dock pop-up dialogs are all white and make it crash (I suspect it's the same problem behind)
My window manager is compiz and my DE is MATE, any idea where to look to solve this?

I should mention that I've tried compiz with both gtk-window-decorator and emerald, both not showing the borders. Also note that I'm fairly new to Arch LInux and I may have missed something in the guides completely.

  • [SOLVED] [Compiz] Gtk-Window-Decorator

Hi guys, after spending the better part of one of my few free days configuring various apps and so on in compiz [I made a fresh arch install]. I finally got to setting my GTK theme away from the ugly defaults. I've installed the Orta theme for now at least, I'll probably change it once a week. The GTK theme sets perfectly fine, I used the gnome-tweak-tool for that, but the decorations(title bar) do not change, they remain the same default theme that gtk-window-decorator has. I have done extensive googling and have not found a solution yet, anyone have a fix?
Last edited by Multimoon (2013-02-17 14:23:36)

The old gtk-window-decorator (I'm assuming you installed the old stable version of compiz 0.8.x from the community repo) still requires certain gconf keys to be set.
If you find setting the GTK theme (using gnome-tweak-tool) and the window decorations (using either gconf-editor or gconftool-2) independently somewhat annoying, you might want to try compiz-devel from the AUR. It's the same version of compiz used in Ubuntu 12.10 and it's stable (at least as far as I've tested, mentioning because the "-devel" suffix might make you think otherwise). The 0.9.x versions of compiz use gsettings instead of gconf, which means that both the GTK theme and the window decorations can be set/changed using gnome-tweak-tool (or dconf-editor or the gsettings utility).
Also, some themes (the Gnome Cupertino theme for example, as well as Ubuntu's light themes) use some form of padding, shadows that the vanilla metacity (from Extra) does not allow, that might also cause gtk-window-decorator to fall back to its default theme. You can actually check whether the theme will be displayed or not in advance using the "metacity-theme-viewer Name_of_theme" command.
I hope that helps, good luck!

  • [solved] acroread: gtk-warnings

    Hi,
    I've changed from i686 to x86-64.
Everything works fine (for what I've seen since yesterday )except acroread.
I receive a lot of gtk-warnings. It seems that acroread can't manage the 64 bit libraries
    (acroread:478): Gtk-WARNING **: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/libclearlooks.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
These warnings don't prevent acroread form starting but it looks very ugly because labels and icons are missing.
Is there a way to solve this?
    Thanks
P.S.: Pacman told me I had to run nspluginwrapper. I obeyed this order but what exactly did this?
Last edited by Barghest (2009-02-19 16:45:22)

    Sorry, I misunderstood your question!
All I can tell you is that nspluginwrapper will allow a 32-bit plugin to work in a 64-bit firefox.  After running nspluginwrapper, your ~/.mozilla/plugins directory will contain a file named something like nppdf.so.  I don't know if that file is a 32-to-64 bit conversion wrapper for the original nppdf.so, or what (I don't know the magic behind it).  Someone with more knowledge really should answer here
PS: Do you have [testing] enabled?  bin32-acroread was giving me some libX11 errors (concerning libxcb) when I tried it last week.  I don't have the error logs anymore, so I can't be more precise.  I think maybe a newer package in testing is breaking acroread, but I haven't really looked into it.

  • [SOLVED] Java GTK look and feel

I opened a thread recently about replacing the ugly swing buttons in Java applications. After successfully modifying my ~/.bashrc, all was well. However, these new changes were only present when run from a terminal. I assumed it was because my desktop was still running a bash session that hadn't loaded the new options yet, so I restarted.
Symptom: Java apps launched from the GUI still have old swing buttons, but have the GTK look and feel when launched from a terminal.
    My .bashrc additions:
    # Java stuff
    export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on -Dswing.aatext=true -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel -Dswing.crossplatformlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel"
I use SLiM for a graphical login experience. Could this be affecting it? I'm not sure what happens differently behind the scenes when using a login manager other than that CTRL+ALT+F7 brings me to my GUI when I use one (because all 6 TTYs are still TTYs).
    Last edited by 2mac (2014-01-02 20:51:35)

I had a similar issue where .xinitrc wasn't working to set an environment variable. I put mine in ~/.config/openbox/environment and it worked. If you run openbox try that. If using a different window manager maybe try /etc/environment I am unsure of how slim functions though maybe there are config files for it. I think slim is on it's way out though (already lacks some compatibility with systemd; they may fix it though upstream I have no idea). But yeah try the environment file way and see if that does it (assuming you have tested your command from the shell and it works how you want).

  • [SOLVED] Light Spreadsheet and SC,Oleo problems

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to Arch Linux and i'm searching for a light spreadsheet for console. The only one in repos is Gnumeric, but it doesn't fit my needs. I hit
    sc spreadsheat and
    Oleo .
But Oleo stucks while running ./configure when "checking for working mktime..." and sc comes with this error while compiling:
    vi.c:43:1: warning: "bool" redefined
    In file included from /usr/include/curses.h:168,
    from vi.c:17:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/4.3.1/include/stdbool.h:36:1: warning: this is the location of the previous definition
    vi.c: In function 'doshell':
vi.c:1410: warning: incompatible implicit declaration of built-in function 'execl'
    gcc -DSYSV3 -O2 -pipe -c -o vmtbl.o vmtbl.c
    gcc -DSYSV3 -O2 -pipe -c -o xmalloc.o xmalloc.c
xmalloc.c:9: error: conflicting types for 'malloc'
xmalloc.c:10: warning: conflicting types for built-in function 'realloc'
    make: *** [xmalloc.o] Error 1
Anyone know, what should be done about it? I don't understand that compiling error and in case of Oleo i think it's some kind of bug.

I applied the patch and now I am able to create binary and even run it. But I can't enter strings or numbers into the cells. For example with
    =1 the input line looks like i> let A0 = 1
it should enter number 1 into the cell... instead i get an error
    syntax error: let A0<= = 1
for input line which looks like
    i> leftstring A0 = "money"
    i get
syntax error: leftstring A0<= = "money"
I'm aware of that one equality sign which seems to me to be extra. Is it right? If it's right, how to correct it?
There's piece of code given when compiling
    vi.c:43:1: warning: "bool" redefined
    In file included from /usr/include/curses.h:168,
    from vi.c:17:

  • [solved] Gnome/GTK icons missing

    Hey,
yet another icon missing topic, but I didn't find anything similar to my problem in this forum.
    http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/3432 … gicon1.png
    http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4341 … gicon2.png
    http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7168 … gicon3.png
As you can see, icons are missing not only in the gnome menu, but also
in firefox (gtk app). Therefore, I think the problem is more related to GTK?!
Yes, I tried serveral icon themes and engines, no success.
    1. Anyone out there who got the same problem?
Because laptop and desktop have the same issue.
    2. Any further information about this issue?
    3. Any suggestions/advices?
    Thanks in advance,
    Max

  • [SOLVED] *term without Alternative Screen

I'm using urxvt without Screen, and it's giving me some trouble with fullscreen programs like less.
The behaviour I'm trying to reproduce is like Screen's 'altscreen off'. (this all works fine in screen btw, with that option on. but I'm trying out urxvt-tabbed.)
So for example with less what I want is if you quit halfway in a document, what was visible remains visible on the screen.
I'm getting some really messed up behaviour though.
With secondaryScreen/Scroll both false: text remains, but the prompt is moved to the top of the screen.
With only secondaryScreen true: text is cleared after quitting (really annoying with less -F) and prompt to next line.
With only secondaryScroll true: whole screen is cleared after quitting and prompt is moved to top of screen.
With both true: text is cleared after quitting and prompt to next line (same as only secondaryScreen true)

    Have a look at http://www.shallowsky.com/linux/noaltscreen.html
It seems, when the secondaryScreen is turned off, vim less etc. will use the rmcup capability to clear the screen instead. The page above includes an alternative terminfo file for urxvt to disable this capability, so you'll be able to turn it off simply by setting $TERM.

  • [Solved] Some GTK themes seem to only partially theme (black boxes)

An example is Aurora, but I'd say 50% of what I have is giving me the same problem.
There are no error messages, but the gnome-menu and panels have black rectangles where you'd expect different shades of color/gradients.
Has aurora meant to have a black gnome-menu, or is something broken? Why do some themes work and others don't? Why are there no error messages?
As far as I know I've installed all of the gtk themes. Are there any configuration options I can play with?
    Edit:
lol, I fixed it seconds after posting this!
    I was missing: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra … es-extras/
    (everything else had been downloaded)

Some applications simply don't use the "usual" graphical toolkits, but their own. Chromium, LibreOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird are classical examples of this. While Firefox's and LibreOffice's integration with GTK is nowadays more than decent, you'll have to install [or create yourself] a specific theme for Chromium. I can't tell about Thunderbird as I don't use it.
In Chromium, if you choose "Preferences → personal preferences → use GTK theme", you might get a good result either way, so try it if you still haven't.

Using xhost+ creates automatically a security problem for Xorg, do NOT do that.
