[SOLVED] no hdmi sound (Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series)

Pulseaudio detects the sound card, and paplay gives sound but totem or youtube movies doesn't give any sound. Gnome sound volume test gives sound though. What should I do to fix the hdmi sound?

I've already tried to comment "load-module module-suspend-on-idle" in /etc/pulse/default.pa file, but it shows idle instead of suspended. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong with the pulseaudio?

  • [SOLVED]Another HDMI sound problem

I'm running an ATI Radeon HD 5770 and the HDMI output isn't working. I've followed the step in the Arch Wiki to add these lines to /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg :
    LABEL arch
    MENU LABEL Arch Linux
    LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
    APPEND root=/dev/sda1 ro radeon.audio=1
    INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
However, when I save the file it says that the file doesn't exist. Is this normal? I mean I can always create the file, but I don't want to mess anything up with the display drivers and such. Should I just create this file, add those few lines, reboot, check alsamixer and see if the sound works? May sound like a dumb question but I'm being EXTRA cautious

    Hi,
Just checking, are you using syslinux as your boot-loader?
Good call, I'm using GRUB. So that probably means I need to edit:
    /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    Thank you.

  • [SOLVED] No HDMI audio

I've been using Arch Linux on my laptop for a few months and have recently decided to Arch my desktop as well. However I have no audio on my HDMI monitor, only the test-sounds (front left, front right, front center) work. I spent two days trying to fix it and I think I need your help.

I fixed the audio using pavucontrol. My HDMI card seemed to have 2 channels with same same name:
Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series] Digital Stereo (HDMI)
Cape Verde/Pitcairn HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series]
I wasn't able to select the second one without pavu, which somehow was the good one.

  • ATI hdmi sound

    Hi,
I have some problems getting sound to work over hdmi on my laptop. I know there are some threads on this, but I found nothing that I think is related to my problem. This might have something to do with the right sound module not being loaded, but it also might not so bear with me while I describe the problem.  I think that when it was working (some time ago...) the module snd_hda_codec_hdmi was loaded.  Now, alsa don't see the sound card at all.
My laptop has hybrid grapics using a hardware mux. The cards are a Intel graphic 3000 and an ATI radeon 5450. When switching, I exit my graphical shell and use vgaswitcheroo on the vc. I get interesting debug messages after switching a couple of times. At boot, vgaswitcheroo is set as
    0:DIS: :DynOff:0000:02:00.0
    1:IGD:+:Pwr:0000:00:02.0
    2:DIS-Audio: :Pwr:0000:02:00.1
After switching to discrete and back again to the integrated card, DIS-Audio is set to Off. When I start the discrete card again, I get the following errors (check the last 20 lines, more included as it may be needed):

  • [SOLVED]Problem with sound in HDMI

    Hello good society of Arch
Now I have problems with sound from HDMI. I use Arch as an tvPc, wasting movies and tv shows on it. I use ALSA and it works well, except of a few files that I have, then there is picture but sound is either twisted or not played at all. It does not matter whether I use vlc or mplayer, I'm experiencing the same problem.
I have not found anything about this with google, other problems have been either hdmi sound working or not, not like it is with me, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.
I know that the files are ok, I can play them in anther pc I have (also using Arch on that pc).
Does anybody know what the problem might be? What do I have to look at to find out what the problem is? This have been like this for some time now, but I haven't looked into it before, because I don't use TV that muts, but the wife does and when she stats blaming Arch, I have too do something about it.
I have never encountered problem with Arch that i cant solve by using this forum and google
    Thanks

  • No sound through HDMI in Radeon 6870

    Hello People from Arch Community
I have a small problem getting sound out of the HDMI of my video card.
    When I do
    lspci | grep AMD
    I get:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts XT [ATI Radeon HD 6800 Series]
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6800 Series]
So the kernel finds the device. But when I do
    aplay -l
    I get:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC887 Digital [ALC887 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I noticed that the HDMI out was listed as Audio Generic, when it should be identified as HDA ATI HDMI. Whenever I choose the HDMI output through alsamixer I only get a s/pdif and I cannot modify anything. I remember that some months before when I installed Arch for the first time sound through the HDMI was working and the audio device was correctly identified. Could it be a new module or kernel path that broke the audio?
I tried using the radeon.sound=1 flag but I still could not get sound out of the HDMI. Even worst, when I use the radeon.sound=1 parameter, my screen display a 5 pixel width purple line at the left border of the screen and the rest of the screen gets squeezed. It is not too bad but still makes text look blurry.
    Could someone help me please?
Extra info: it is not hardware related, sound works fine in windows
I am not a total beginner, I know my way in the CLI but still I lack a lot of knowledge.
Another tip, around the same time, my framebuffer decoration and splash(fbcondecor, fbsplah) stopped working, I don't know if it is related.

You may find this article >Here< to be of interest.  I don't know much about Radeon audio but for your 6870 that may seem to be of relevance.
Are you using the open-source driver or the proprietary with an older X.org?  With the above article, the open-source audio seems to be slated for kernel 3.5.

  • Radeon HD 5850 can't get HDMI sound + openCL + dual moniter

So i have a Radeon HD 5850 and so far I have only been able to get the dual moniters working with the free driver, and the HDMI sound working with the propritery drivers.
I am not afraid to downgrade packages, but currently I am on the free drivers and flash isn't working, openCL isn't working and HDMI sound isn't working.
What version of the drivers should I get?

Hi I have HD4850 and HDMI sound used to work nice with free driver and dual monitor setup  - I had to add kernel option radeon.audio=1 and
    ensure sound is unmuted.
I have been using this ( xbmc running on 2nd screen ) for long time.
After kernel update from 3.9 to 3.10 my  system stopped booting with that option though.
They say opencl is not supported with free driver.
So you can give a try with radeon.audio=1 anyway, just have boot option to start also without it
in case you get 'boot to death' like me on 3.10-x.

  • HDMI Sound with Sapphire RADEON HD 5450

Hey guys, just installed Arch for my desktop computer, and I am having some troubles to get the HDMI sound to work. I have tried the xf86-video-ati driver, and I have tried to install the catalyst package from AUR, but its complaining about the catalyst-utils package even I have installed the package. So, is there anyone who have successfully gotten the sound to work with HDMI and the ATI driver? PS. I alsa have a Radeon HD 4200 on my motherboard, but are not using it.
When I use "aticonfig --initial" to generate my xorg.conf I get the following error:
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
    (EE) No drivers available.
    Fatal server error:

When I use "X -configure" to generate my xorg.conf, it finds the screen and the driver, but sound are not working.

I have tried all of them, none outputs any sound.

    Hi.
The only easy way I found to make hdmi audio work and  on my 4850 was with pulseaudio applet (gnome-media-pulse) and the open radeon drivers (xf86-video-ati). With catalyst I can't, even in windows. Anyway radeon driver doesn't support your card yet  " http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature  ".
Before this, I remember that with smplayer I could select the hdmi audio driver and it worked.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display hdmi sound out.

    Hi everyone,
Does the MBP Retina have hdmi/sound out?
When I connected it to my HDTV the image was ok, but there wasn't any sound on my sound system. The only sound was through the mac's speaker's.
Is there any way to solve this problem?
    Cheers,

Go into the Sound Option in Sys Prefs and select the HDMI as the output source.

  • [SOLVED] (Almost) No sound: pulseaudio, Audigy2

    Hi,
For a while now I have huge problems with my sound. I think I messed something up while playing with Alsa. Now I have no sound at all - except for the startup and shutdown sounds in KDE.
I'm trying to configure pulseaudio for my system. I followed the steps on the wiki. Here's my situation:
    - I have two soundcards installed: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (emu10k1) and the graphics-card-onboard HDMI "soundcard" of my ATI Radeon 5770. I want to use the Audigy card.
    - I blacklisted 'snd-pcm-oss'. The modules needed are loaded:
    $ lsmod|grep snd
    snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2739 1
    snd_seq_dummy 1431 0
    snd_seq_oss 28760 0
    snd_seq_midi_event 5436 1 snd_seq_oss
    snd_seq 50082 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
    snd_emu10k1 140847 2
    snd_rawmidi 19237 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_ac97_codec 110751 1 snd_emu10k1
    ac97_bus 1174 1 snd_ac97_codec
    snd_seq_device 5297 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
    snd_util_mem 2328 1 snd_emu10k1
    snd_hda_intel 22285 0
    snd_hda_codec 79384 2 snd_hda_codec_atihdmi,snd_hda_intel
    snd_hwdep 6110 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_codec
    snd_pcm 71921 4 snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
    snd_timer 19265 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
    snd 57562 15 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_ac97_codec,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
    soundcore 5969 1 snd
    snd_page_alloc 7249 3 snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
    - I have connected my external amplifier via the digital out of my card. I know that this connection is good, because I hear the startup and shutdown sound of KDE.
    - There is no sound in KDE's multimedia configuration (phonon) via the "test sound" button. I have tried gstreamer, xine and vlc backend. Gstreamer is configured to use pulseaudio, as described in the wiki.
    - There is no sound in VLC (explicitly set to use pulseaudio), mplayer, amarok, aplay, play.
    - pulseaudio is running:
$ ps aux | grep pulse
    kevin 4693 0.0 0.1 242520 6188 ? S<sl 18:51 0:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

    kevin 27979 0.0 0.0 8844 948 pts/1 S+ 19:31 0:00 grep pulse
    - I have installed the packages for pulseaudio and alsa, 64 and 32 bit (tried reinstalling all of them):
    $ pacman -Ss "pulseaudio|alsa" | grep installed
    extra/alsa-firmware 1.0.23-1 [installed]

When I play music, I see the program and it's volume level in pavucontrol, but I don't hear anything. I tried using different profiles in the configuration tab, but only "Analog Stereo Duplex" works; every other setting causes KDE to switch to "Juniper HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5700 Series]" (which I don't want to use).
    Maybe a problem with ALSA?

Hello,i have a little problem with my Yoga.If i connect my Yoga with my TV via hdmi, i have no sound (screen works)I hve this problem under Win 8.1 and also with Win 10.Under Sound Options is only the Speaker (Intel SST Audio Device) availabel. Nothing with HDMi Sound or Digital sound.Right Click - deaktivated devices is set.I have checkt the HDMI Cable,it is ok.There is no sound. just video. An driver update doesnt solved the problem.I hope anybody can help me.sorry for my bad english.Best regards H.

You can run some tests from here to check if its a motherboard connection problem -
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/lenovodiagnosticsolutions/downloads
Could be that just a wire is loose inside the laptop, As you say you are a intermediate/advanced PC user, you can open it up and check for loose connections. Here is the manual link -
    http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_yoga_2_pro_hmm.pdf
Lenovo's warranty can be extended, i believe if you were having issues, you should have extended it. Sorry about the laptop condition now.
My suggestion is to take a look inside and see if it seems like a fixable problem. If not, buy and use external speakers.
I am sure there are no manufacturers who would fix a laptop without being paid if it is no longer in warranty (and problems can happen with any laptop)

Resetting the NVRAM / PRAM, as per > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
