[SOLVED] (Almost) No sound: pulseaudio, Audigy2

Hi,
For a while now I have huge problems with my sound. I think I messed something up while playing with Alsa. Now I have no sound at all - except for the startup and shutdown sounds in KDE.
I'm trying to configure pulseaudio for my system. I followed the steps on the wiki. Here's my situation:
- I have two soundcards installed: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum [SB0240P] (emu10k1) and the graphics-card-onboard HDMI "soundcard" of my ATI Radeon 5770. I want to use the Audigy card.
- I blacklisted 'snd-pcm-oss'. The modules needed are loaded:
$ lsmod|grep snd
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2739 1
snd_seq_dummy 1431 0
snd_seq_oss 28760 0
snd_seq_midi_event 5436 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 50082 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_emu10k1 140847 2
snd_rawmidi 19237 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_ac97_codec 110751 1 snd_emu10k1
ac97_bus 1174 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_seq_device 5297 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi
snd_util_mem 2328 1 snd_emu10k1
snd_hda_intel 22285 0
snd_hda_codec 79384 2 snd_hda_codec_atihdmi,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep 6110 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_codec
snd_pcm 71921 4 snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer 19265 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
snd 57562 15 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_ac97_codec,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 5969 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 7249 3 snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
- I have connected my external amplifier via the digital out of my card. I know that this connection is good, because I hear the startup and shutdown sound of KDE.
- There is no sound in KDE's multimedia configuration (phonon) via the "test sound" button. I have tried gstreamer, xine and vlc backend. Gstreamer is configured to use pulseaudio, as described in the wiki.
- There is no sound in VLC (explicitly set to use pulseaudio), mplayer, amarok, aplay, play.
- pulseaudio is running:
$ ps aux | grep pulse
kevin 4693 0.0 0.1 242520 6188 ? S<sl 18:51 0:01 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

kevin 27979 0.0 0.0 8844 948 pts/1 S+ 19:31 0:00 grep pulse
- I have installed the packages for pulseaudio and alsa, 64 and 32 bit (tried reinstalling all of them):
$ pacman -Ss "pulseaudio|alsa" | grep installed

When I play music, I see the program and it's volume level in pavucontrol, but I don't hear anything. I tried using different profiles in the configuration tab, but only "Analog Stereo Duplex" works; every other setting causes KDE to switch to "Juniper HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 5700 Series]" (which I don't want to use).
Maybe a problem with ALSA?

  • Solving the distorted sound?

Hi, I have itunes v7.1 and am experiencing the same sound problems everyone else seems to , (poor and lowers the volume in the middle by itself). I was thinking of installing v6.5 software but will that solve the bad sound on my music automatically or will I have to re input my cd's into itunes to resolve the sound quality issue?

You might try upgrading to the laterst version.
    Also see troubleshooting sound problems:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
Having said that, I had to downgrade to 6.0.5.
It is not a problem, but you have to retrieve your old 6.0.5 library from Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You can find the old version here:

  • Sound Blaster Audigy2 NX Huge Prob

My Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 NX works well. At least to a point.
It works until I stop using something that's sound dri'ven for about 2 hours. And then it basically blacks out. It won't work. Computer recognizes it, but says "there is no playback device availiable." The only way to fix this is to reboot, then it works for until I don't use something sound dri'ven for two hours.
    What's the problem?

Seems to have fixed the problem.
For those of you who are having similar problems, go to the automatic webUpdate, and download the updated drivers and firmware. I left it on all night, and 00% of the time, the speakers and sound device wouldn't work. It seems to have made it last night, so I assume the driver update has fixed the problem.

according to your config, you used that workaround wrongly. it will only work, if you point to the pulse server IP in mpd.conf. So add the server line in your pulse output. (its most likely 127.0.0.1)

  • [Solved]Alsa funkiness (sound breaking)

(Note: I originally thought this was a steam issue, but turns out it's not only steam that can break my sound (see the update on the bottom))
I get an issue with Steam where I get a short (less than 1s) sound on repeat/loop (usually it's some part of the message notification sound, or a trailer that I was watching) sounding a bit like a broken record, randomly occurring after keeping steam open for long periods of time in the background. Only fix I've found so far is to restart steam.
I have the Enlightenmen 18 Window Manager.
    Notable errors:
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 70: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 78: saw unknown, expected number

AL lib: pulseaudio.c:612: Context did not connect: Access denied
I don't have any reliable method to reproduce the issue, and it does not seem to output an error of it's own in the terminal output when it occurs. I have noticed that this is more likely to occur when steam has been open for prolonged periods. I am not using pulseaudio, just Alsa. I also noticed when I was running a Wine game (not through steam) that this issue occurred, and it seemed to contaminate the sound outputs for whine too (I got like a "double" sound for every sound effect the game played). If the sound was completely broken on steam and making a loop like I explained at the start of this post and then I close steam while the Wine game is running, the sound from steam will remain until I shut down the game too (i.e. seems that this isn't just breakage internally in steam, but in alsa itself)
The one thing I have tried to solve this was install lib32-libpulse, this did not seem to fix the errors nor the problem. I imagine installing pulseaudio could fix this problem, but pulseaudio downright hates my sound card, so I would rather not use it.
I also have two other issues too that are less severe.
1: Mouse cursor sometimes gets locked in steam instance (Right clicking will show the steam context menu, pressing "stop" in that context menu will solve the issue. This sometimes happens when I use "Ctrl + C"(copy) or "Ctrl + V"(paste) when I'm typing in the discussions)
2: Fullscreen videos will not go fullscreen (they will only fill the steam window)
    Update:
I found a bulletproof way to make a similar issue occur.
If I open facebook in firefox, and get a message notification while I am playing a movie in Cmplayer (my media player of choice) the sound in CMplayer breaks (but firefox's sound keeps working normally)
    Update2:
I was rather desperate to get this fixed so I installed pulseaudio as much as I despise it, the quality of my audio is damaged by it, but this problem was as I suspected fixed by installing it. I am guessing pulseaudio is set up partially to prevent issues like this one, but I would relaly prefer not to have it. This does not rid me of all the errors however (reference_audio_renderer errors persist) but it does create a new error for steam:
[0706/215704:ERROR:alsa_output.cc(684)] Failed querying delay: Input/output error

I always had to have an asound.conf in the name of upmixing 2.0 to 5.1 This is the content of my asound.conf before I made the changes. I also had a problem with a game where I had crackling noises on 48khz so I had to tell alsa to force 96khz (or 44.1khz but since my card supports 96khz that's what I went with) to avoid that.

  • Almost no sound in flash

    Hi
I've spend the last couple of days, almost nonstop searching the web for a solution for this. Tryed possible solution i found, but no luck so far.
I got perfect sound in any application, game, media player etc. But neither in internet explorer nor firefox when viewing online videos (youtube, xfire etc) do i get much sound.
At first i thought there was no sound at all, but when i crank up the speaker system to max i can hear a little (but if i do anything else with sound i get blasted away).
I've tryed registy fixes, checking if files where there, installing K-lite codec pack to fix regestry issues, uninstalled flash lots of times, rebooted before reinstalling, clearing temp internet files folder etc. Nothing helps.
I got the feeling that some stupid website somehow has changed a setting somewhere for flash, making sound almost unhearable, but i dunno how i can fix this.
As said, i searched and tryed all, but im lost now.
    win xp pro (auto updating)
    firefox (auto updating)
ie (guess its uptodate from windows updates, only use it if something doesnt work in FF)
    onboard realtek hd sound card.
but as said, everywhere else its fine, just not playing sound in flash based videos.
noticed this first like 3-4 weeks ago, but figuered the videos i tryed to watch where broken or had no sound. Now i know its just my flash that has no volume set somehow.
oh, ofcourse i checked everysingle soundcard volume controler and mute box already.
    any help will be appriciated.
    - Bohs

since noone here cares, i've been trying everything in my powers to get this solved, and i might be a step closer, yet very far away, as i can not fix whats wrong.
What seems to be wrong is the DirectSound, atleast when i enter dxdiag and test sound there, its extremly silent too, i tryed changing all acceleration features to see if that helps, both in dxdiag and my sound options, that only makes everything worse.
however my DirectMusic works fine in normal volume.
But since microsoft is so ****** up on "there stuff", i can not even uninstall and reinstall directx .. i found two fixes on the net that should do this and thereby reinstall whatever is default with XP, but they just totally fock up your system, and you cant do anything without system restore. You can not even choose it from the XP installation cd ...
i got the latest (9.0c 4.09.0000.0904) version, so i can not update it with a newer ... how do i fix this? its just weird to me that no other application nor game is affected by this - only flash - they all use directx (well Prototype is a little affected, but that seems to be a game problem according to there forums http://forums.activision.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=1788 ).
and please dont tell me to update my audio drivers, cause there aint any newer aviable, and i have tryed reinstalling them several times.

  • [SOLVED] Several problems with PulseAudio under Xfce4

So, yesterday I sat down to set up pulseaudio on my machine (I want to try and use it for my 'networked-audio system' of the future).
I was aware of the fact that pulseaudio does have several problems. particularly with ALSA-compatibility, but I was ready to give it a shot anyway and hope for the best.
Of course that did not happen...
I installed everything (including packages for backward compatibility with ALSA) and while sound still works (what a relief), I have several problems now:
    1. Pulseaudio does NOT save it's volume levels  - Volume levels for Pulseaudio are gone after next reboot, I was trying to look into this, but found no workable solution.
    2. Strange behaviour of apps when changing volume - This is REALLY annoying.
When I am in a music app for example (e.g. Banshee) and am trying to increase/decrease volume, the current sound (song) will 'mute' when I am moving the slider and only 'resume' after I release it.
    Any ideas are much appreciated,
    Thanks,
SOLVED: It seems that all my alsa channels were automatically muted when pulseaudio was first enabled.
Strange, Is this because pulseaudio wants you not to use alsa or something? :-)

I was not aware of this, very useful - Thank you.

  • [Solved (kindof)] No sound in Don't Starve

Hello. Earlier today I made this thread where I didn't get sound in Binding of Isaac. That was solved, as written, by doing what was described here.
That wiki article was about Don't Starve, which is the game I'm trying to play now, but the solutions in the wiki doesn't work for me. Everything works fine, except no sound. I've googled like crazy, and the solutions that solved it for others haven't for me.
I installed lib32-alsa-plugins, still no sound
    I added the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
to the startup parameters, and to my surprise, still no sound. Then I am out of ideas.
Starting steam through the console, then starting Don't Starve, gives out some errors:
Cannot read socket fd = 46 err = Success
Could not read result type = 22

I made a post about this issue in the Don't Starve reddit, to try and see if they know. Then I made this topic to see if you guys know. I just bought the game and really want to be able to play it.

A little update. Was going to play another game with a friend on steam, also didn't work with sound. So I looked into if I could install PulseAudio alongside JACK, so that I could just start Pulse and have the game use that if needed. Worked. I had to use the
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH" %command%
launch parameter to get the sound to work, still.
Even with Pulse, sound in Don't Starve doesn't work. I can now however go to the settings, up the sound, save, and have the sound not reset back to zero. So that works.

  • [SOLVED]No more sound in flash, but kmix shows a stream

    Hello all,
I'm fairly new (and happy that I switched) to Arch .  When I installed Arch on my x86_64 based laptop everything worked fine.  Somewhere along the line I lost sound in flash.  I use KDE with the defaults for sound: Phonon, Pulse, and ALSA.  For my phonon backend I'm using VLC, but have also tried gstreamer.  I first realized the issue in late November and have since been wrestling with it in my spare time to no avail.  I have tried everything in the forums and wikis that I could find (even if it seemed like it didn't apply).  The one difference that I'm experiencing that no one else has posted is that I have a stream show up in kmix when a video is playing, but still have no sound.  It's not muted, and I can move the volume slider with no change.  I have no idea when exactly it broke, or what update may have caused it.  Has anyone had this issue and solved it without posting?  Can anyone offer some troubleshooting advice?  I was previously a Gentoo user of 6+ years and wonder if there  are any Arch tools similar to equery (depends and depgraph flags) that can help me find all the packages installed that are related to flash?  Also, is there anything in Arch that is similar to the Gentoo emerge log?  I would like to clean out everything flash and pulse related and start from scratch, but don't know the best way, or even a clean way, to approach this.
Thank you in advance for any help offered.
    Regards,
    Joseph

@alexkarro  Thanks for your quick reply and for the links.  Unfortunately, I followed the advice from both links.  I have both lib32-alsa-plugins and lib32-libcanberra-pulse installed.  From what I understand about the first link, my default device is the correct device.  But just in case I'm wrong I pasted the output from aplay and my asound.conf below.  Am I misinterpreting the output to aplay, or configuring my asound.conf wrong?    Originally, when it worked, I got all the config instructions from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio.
    Thanks again.

  • SOLVED - T500 - Lost sound volume after a very recent update

I keep my T500 current with new drivers, however in a recent update (I do not know which) I lost almost all the volume on my speakers and headphone.
    Has anyone experienced this?
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    Persio.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

ONeill, thanks for your response and interest in helping.
    I am running Win 7 Ultimate x64.
I have just finished doing a series of  tests with NO success.
All my drivers are current with the Lenovo Support Site drivers' versions.
I have unistalled the Conexant driver using the Device Driver screen and let the system reinstall (PnP).
I have unistalled the Hot Key Drivers, tested without them installed, and reinstalled them.
I have reinstalled the Conexant driver fresh from the Lenovo Support Site.
The problem I am having is the following:
In a silent room, using the SmartAudio aplet from Control Panel,  I can barely hear the sounds with the volume set at 100%. This is true for the internal speakers and for a headphone plugged into the system.
This indicates to me that the it is a volume issue.
I would appreciate your comments and suggestions.
    Persio.

  • (SOLVED) No system sounds, and no sound for some applications

For some reason, system sounds stopped working (like when one takes a screenshot). aplay plays sounds (I mean, no errors whatsoever), but I can hear nothing. Listening from mplayer or vlc still works as normal.
When I 'aplay sound.wav', I see the leds going up and down on pavucontrol, but I hear nothing.
I run openbox and I don't start gnome-settings-daemon with it. It is "pure" openbox.
I checked pavucontrol settings, and also alsamixer but couldn't find anything that could solve the problem. I use pulse-audio, and have pulseaudio-alsa and alsa-utils installed.

Yeah, I can guarantee that I didn't touch alsamixer myself. I didn't even know the F6 option (although, today I realized it is there very well visible). Anyway, I guess an update might have changed something... I saw other people with similar problems in #archlinux this morning.

  • [SOLVED]Problem with sound in HDMI

    Hello good society of Arch
Now I have problems with sound from HDMI. I use Arch as an tvPc, wasting movies and tv shows on it. I use ALSA and it works well, except of a few files that I have, then there is picture but sound is either twisted or not played at all. It does not matter whether I use vlc or mplayer, I'm experiencing the same problem.
I have not found anything about this with google, other problems have been either hdmi sound working or not, not like it is with me, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.
I know that the files are ok, I can play them in anther pc I have (also using Arch on that pc).
Does anybody know what the problem might be? What do I have to look at to find out what the problem is? This have been like this for some time now, but I haven't looked into it before, because I don't use TV that muts, but the wife does and when she stats blaming Arch, I have too do something about it.
I have never encountered problem with Arch that i cant solve by using this forum and google
    Thanks

But HDMI appears not to work (no controls in alsa mixer -S/PDIFs only, no sound via aplay/speaker-test), so I use PCH instead. And everything works but HTML5 sounds in FF

  • [SOLVED]Alsa: No sound in flash64, works in flash32

    Hi Everyone,
So I had a devel of a time getting audio working on my computer, largely because I was an idiot. I got oss working fine, but then it wouldn't work with either chromium or firefox.  With help from mich41 (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=156936) I was able to get it working with just alsa, and I uninstalled everything related to oss, or at least I thought I did.
Now sound works everywhere except the 64bit flash plugin (extra/flashplugin 11.2.202.261-1) at /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so.  In either chromium or firefox, flash videos play with video, but no sound, I can get Google Play Music to work fine, but not video.  I fixed this problem in firefox by installing aur/lib32-flashplugin 11.2.202.261-2.  However, neither chromium nor google-chrome will use this by default.
    Here is the key though:
When I play a flash video in chromium, I get the following error:
ALSA lib pcm_oss.c:397:(_snd_pcm_oss_open) Cannot open device /dev/dsp
The only references I can find to pcm_oss in the 64bit and 32bit versions of alsa-plugins:
    alsa-plugins: /usr/lib/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_oss.so
    lib32-alsa-plugins: /usr/lib32/alsa-lib/libasound_module_pcm_oss.so
I have search for a while and I can't find a way to either disable oss completely, or to change the oss device, when oss isn't installed.  (yaourt -Qs oss turns up nothing related to oss, and I haven't custom compiled anything)
The only thing I can think of that I don't really want to do is to remove flashplugin and symlink the 32 bit version to the 64 bit library location so that chromium is tricked into using the 32 bit one.
Or perhaps I should install oss and alsa side-by-side??  I am pretty sure that is impossible since oss detaches the alsa kernel modules.
Does anyone have any ideas?  Does anyone else have this problem?
Also, the pepper version of flash for chromium also does not work.
    Thanks!

I figured it out - pulseaudio was not set up properly.
I just reinstalled pulseaudio, configured it to use the analog output and not the HDMI, installed pulseaudio-alsa, and rebooted, and now everything works!
