[Solved]No sound anymore (ALSA/PulseAudio)

Ok so I have no idea why I have no sound anymore, I didn't install anything...
Anyway, that's what I've tried:
-Check if mixer are all up in alsamixer
-Try to play a bit with pavucontrol
-Reboot
-Rerun pulseaudio with verbose
-Mute and unmute with physical button (I don't know why but I used to get this problem and it used to be solved just doing this)
-Googgling and searching this forum
Here are some more info

All went smoothly, with the exception that there is no audio whatsoever.

a couple of days i had a similar problem, because sound modules for my internal modem were loaded. maybe you can try to blacklist the snd_hda_codec_realtek module, which looks like a network card.
you can achieve that by putting
    blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek
    in /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and reboot.

And dont have any sound anymore, nowhere. PulseAudio is just ignoring my sound-card completely and KDE/GNOME System settings tell me that i do not even have any soundcard
Alsamixer detects the soundcard fine and if i unmute the soundcard there, it works. But its not really comfortable to change the volume with Alsamixer. Also i have no ability to change between HDMI and Analog.
Any idea what could have cause this? As you can see in the logs, there havent been any major kernel update nor pulseaudio update.
This is the Soundcard: Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Kernel Module is snd_hda_intel which is loaded and working
Seems like Pulseaudio is not running at all, it also does not start with the message "E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permission denied" which is not true

Ok, found out it was true.
Seems like whatever reason i have to find out reset some files (not all) to root, so i was no longer the owner of some random files for whatever reason.
    Works now.

  • [SOLVED]No Sound with ALSA - Intel Corporation 82801G HD Audio

    Hey all,
I've succesfully installed Arch Linux. My past two attempts have met with failure, all because of my own failure to read and follow directions correctly. This time everything is installed correctly. I am running Kdemod3 on my laptop with Arch and everything works great. I LOVE Pacman and the simplicity of Arch's configuration files. It's super fast and all together simple. My only remaining problem is this:
My sound with ALSA is not functioning. I followed the installation instructions at the arch wiki and after unmuting all of my channels I still would not get any sound. My sound module is snd_hda_intel and it is detected, loaded and the whole nine yards (as far as I can tell). My user is a member of the 'audio' user group also. I looked at the troubleshooting tips on the bottom of the Wiki but decided not to try them as they do not seem to pertain to my card (snd_hda_intel) but I will try them if anyone would like me to.
If anyone has any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!:D Anything I can provide that you need I will be more than willing to provide.
Thanks for such a great distribution,
    Dan

Problem resolved. I ran alsaconf, selected my soundcard, and everything was working from there out. Thanks MisfitI38 on the IRC!!!

  • [SOLVED] Low sound with ALSA

Hi! I'm using alsa on a laptop with master, speaker and PCM at 100%, and I still can't get an output as loud as I'd like.
On ubuntu with pulseaudio, I had the option of setting the volume to 120% on the sound preferences menu, which made a desirable volume level for me. Is there an equivalent thing in arch? Is this like setting PCM to something higher than 0b?
    Cheers!

Just installed pulseaudio. Not really a solution to the name of this thread, since I didn't get a loud volume with ALSA, but it solves my problem of having low volume on my PC

  • [SOLVED] No sound after installing pulseaudio

    Hi,
I recently installed pulseaudio to be able to use skype since their update to version 4.3.
I installed with additional stuff using the command:
    $ sudo pacman -S pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa pavucontrol lib32-libpulse
After installing I ran the commands:
    $ pulseaudio -k
    $ pulseaudio --start
At this point, skype and sound were working properly again.
After rebooting my computer, I completely lost the sound. I tried killing and restarting pulseaudio and reinstalled twice, but I never managed to have to sound back since...
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you for your help

I am very aware of that, why not use index instead? It is as convenient as enable. Why leave the user with a disabled device, when it can continue to work? I consider this highly inefficient, because it does not solve the actual issue and creates a potential problem in the future.
In this case, user interaction was the cause, so it does not matter.

  • No Sound in ALSA & Pulseaudio despite configuring

    Right.
So, I installed ALSA, and fully followed the wiki's instructions to no avail. On a previous install on another computer, I was able to fix the problem by installing Pulseaudio, and so I did it again on my current comp. I got sound on this computer on a singular occasion after the Pulseaudio install, but now sound is gone again. Any idea why?
I am using compiz-standalone, and in my ~/.start-fusion.sh, I already have
    pulseaudio --start
    in it.
However, when I run pacmd list, it still states that there is no Pulseaudio daemon running. I have to start it manually in the end, and still, sound doesn't work.
I also noticed that when executing
    $ fuser -v /dev/snd/*
    $ fuser -v /dev/dsp
    /dev/dsp does not exist.
asound.conf is already to let pulseaudio be the default device, and everything in alsamixer is unmuted. I have also installed alsa-plugins, so there, really, should be no reason why pulseaudio, and sound in general doesn't work.

I'm not sure what volume control/mixer you are using but I installed pulse audio yesterday along with gnome-media-pulseaudio and through gnome's applet I was able to change my hardware's profile and manage to get sound and volume controls back hope it helps (i'm running compiz stand alone as well but have Gnome DE too)

  • [Solved] No Sound, No *ALSA*. Whatsoever. Confused.

Hi there, I have a more unique ALSA problem. At least, I searched through the forums and didn't see something like my problem. Which is:
I have no ALSA. Whatsoever. I have no idea how that happened. I do have a sound card.
Well, okay, I'm running Arch on a virtual machine with an emulated soundcard. Virtualbox, sound enabled (Emulating ICH AC97), Host (Debian Lenny)'s ALSA works fine, I'm streaming ETN.fm through Sonata right this moment, with the occasional message chimes coming in from Pidgin.
I installed Arch just fine through the latest Core CD. I've also upgraded the system successfully. I've installed alsa-lib, alsa-util, and alsa-oss. But there's no alsamixer, no alsaconf, no alsa* anything. No clue what's going on! Am I supposed to install Alsa from source now?
Or is there any way I can tell Arch "Hay, you forgot ALSA. Plz get it now"?
    Thanks for any info.

Wow, thanks filou. I just reinstalled it after issuing a sync and update and it worked. I was pretty sure that's what I did first after not finding alsamixer at all, but for some reason this time it actually went through. I think pacman just managed to download the file without installing it?
Thanks for the help, all. Sorry for this dumb question

  • [Solved] No sound with ALSA (change default sound card)

I installed Arch on another laptop and I am unable to get sound working.
    # lspci | grep -i audio

00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] FCH Azalia Controller (rev 02)
Two devices show up in alsamixer. The first (the default, I assume) shows up only an S/PDIF button that I can toggle. If I select the other sound card, I can change volume normally.
I followed this solution in the wiki with no success.
How can I make the second sound card the default one?

    Reinstall alsa-lib, it provides /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.

I think you confused 'alsaconf' binary with 'alsa.conf' config.

  • ALSA often doesn't produce sound anymore after suspend

    Hi,
For some years this has been fine and pulseaudio worked fine after waking up from suspend.
But for about one or two month it more and more often doesn't. After waking up from suspend I just don't hear sound anymore. I can't find any error message anywhere, just that it doesn't output sound anymore. Killing it with "pulseaudio -k" or "pkill pulseaudio" or "pkill -9 pulseaudio" doesn't solve it. But "telinit 1", waiting until pulseaudio is dead and then "telinit 5" solves it so it is definitely not my sound driver.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
Any ideas how I can find out what's wrong?
Last edited by Cdh (2012-05-10 19:48:45)

Maybe the power saving for my sound chip triggered the problem. I had this in my startup config:
    echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
I have removed it and hadn't had that problem so far. If it doesn't happen in the next time I'll mark this as solved. :-/
    EDIT:
Nope, it didn't help. Today after waking up from suspend it didn't output any sound although everything seemed fine.
This time I tried transferring the sound over the network with pulseaudio. That worked.
Then I killed everything and even went to init 1. But there not even mplayer -ao alsa worked and I had to reboot to get my sound back. So, not pulseaudio's fault, but alsa doesn't work right.

  • [Solved] No sound (using Gnome with Pulseaudio)

    Hello,
I have an issue with my audio. Since yesterday it has not been working, as in no sound in my headphones
I updated gnome, cinnamon and linux yesterday. I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Another possible cause could be switching from cinnamon to gnome which I did yesterday (I don't know when exactly my audio stopped working).
    Other relevant facts:
-My mic is still working fine
-Using the Xonar DG sound card
    -Nothing is muted in alsamixer
-not a hardware issue, working fine in dual boot windows
Pulse audio in verbose mode suggest that the issue is not pulseaudio (as does pavucontrol's visualization):
    I: [pulseaudio] main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
I: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Successfully gained nice level -11.

My best guess at this point is that something(tm) is wrong with alsa. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this though. Any advice?
Please let me know if anything important is missing.

Did you ever have a copy of front channels or a mix of all of them played on the headphone jack with alsa only? I doubt it. If you kill pulseaudio and run following, what channels do you hear from headphones?
    speaker-test -c 8 -t wav -D plughw:DG,0
This is probably more of a pulseaudio issue, since alsa usually does not copy streams.
InfamousBlue wrote:I did not however update pulseaudio or anything else alsa related (as far as I can tell).
Partial upgrades are not supported. There are some remapping examples on the wiki. If you seek a hardware remapping solution try hdajackretask from alsa-tools, it works however for hda compliant cards.

  • [solved] After sytem update ALSA only plays sound for root

Hello. Yesterday I performed a system update as usual, and after rebooting I found that my user account does not have any sound anymore. Root has sound just fine. I checked and my user is still in the audio group. I even removed him from the group, added him again, and rebooted but it did not help.
I get these error messages in a terminal:
    mplayer:
alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:989:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
    speaker-test:
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:989:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
    Playback open error: -13,Permission denied
Running these with a sudo works 100% fine. Alsamixer levels for my user are normal too.
    WORKAROUND: Restart timidity service.
SOLUTION: Do not run timidity as a service in the first place.

    Thanks for replying.
My root user actually doesn't play sound, I just tried to play some for testing purpose after my normal user suddenly just had silence.
Unfortunately those IPC-changes did not help. However, I removed my /etc/asound.conf file completely for testing purpose and voila, sound suddenly works again. So it seems the last update changed something that does not accept my asound configuration anymore. I will try to experiment a bit with its contents to further narrow it down.
    Ok, this is strange
    I commented out an entry
      period_time 0
and after that my user had sound again. Then I restored that entry and...sound still works.
I will pretend I didn't see anything and just move along I guess.
