[Solved] No sound on X, but it works on the console

I'm not sure what went wrong, so I'll tell the full story: I was struggling to get the Catalyst driver working. I have a Dell 5547, which has two graphics cards, an Intel HD 4400 and a Radeon R7 M260. I had installed the packages catalyst-hook and catalyst-utils-pxp from Vi0l0's repositories, but couldn't start X when I switched to the AMD card. Eventually, I downgraded to Xorg 1.14, also from Vi0l0's repositories, and now I was able to start X with both graphic cards. I'd read on The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill that downgrading to the Linux kernel 3.15.8 solved Daniel.White's problems, so I downloaded the corresponding linux and linux-headers packages from the Arch Rollback Machine. Later, I installed the last Linux kernel (version 3.16.1) and verified that I could still start X with both cards.
Before downgrading to Xorg 1.14, I installed Gnome 3 and everything worked great. I could listen to my music and watch videos on YouTube. Somewhere along the way, however, my sound stopped working. I'm using pulseaudio, and even after changing the settings using pavucontrol, I still can't get the audio to work -- on X. Sound works great on the console, but it refuses to work after I start X.
When I boot my computer and open an audio file with, say, mplayer, it complains that the "Audio device got stuck!"
pavucontrol reports that I have two built-in audio devices. The first one is off, and the second is set to "Analog Stereo Duplex". If I turn it off and then back on, mplayer stops complainning, but no sound comes out. On the "Output Devices" tab, pavucontrol now says that I have a "Dummy Output". It reverts back to normal once I reboot the machine.
Here's some info I think might be useful:
/etc/asound.conf:
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
ctl.!default {

Output of aplay -L:

/proc/asound/cards:

HDA Intel HDMI at 0xb0c10000 irq 65

Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks for reading!

Hi emeres, thanks for the answer. I edited /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf as you suggested, then rebooted.
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=1
options snd-hda-intel index=0
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
$ lspci -nn | grep -i audio
00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller [8086:0a0c] (rev 0b)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
While mplayer is trying to play an MP3 file, I ran:
$ lspci -nn | grep -i audio
00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller [8086:0a0c] (rev 0b)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
I edited 50-alsa-base.conf once again and rebooted the system.
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa-base.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=1,0
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
$ lspci -nn | grep -i audio
00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller [8086:0a0c] (rev 0b)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series HD Audio Controller [8086:9c20] (rev 04)
I even tried adding this to 50-alsa-base.conf:
options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto vid=8086 pid=0a0c
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=9c20
Then rebooted. Nothing changed. I swapped the indexes and that didn't work either.
Then I exited Gnome and ran aplay -l on tty1:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC3234 Analog [ALC3234 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1

pgrep indicated that pulseaudio was indeed running, and I could play an MP3 with mplayer -ao pulse a.mp3. So, pulseaudio is running before X starts. I've checked my ~/.xinitrc and /etc/X11/xinit. Nothing there. That's crazy; what could be running that only affects X? Also, this problem is window-manager independent. It doesn't matter whether I'm running gnome3 or i3, I can't play audio inside X. If I go to tty3, for instance, sound works just fine.

    Hello there, LaruaGalliers.
    The following Knowledge Base article provides some great troubleshooting steps for your issue:
    iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Particularly:
    Battery does not charge
    Verify that the outlet being used is working.
    Try another USB power adapter if available.
    If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
    Try another USB cable if available.
    iPhone or iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive
    If you see the image below, charge the iPhone or iPod touch with USB power adapter for at least 15 minutes.
    You should see this image when iPhone or iPod touch begins to charge:
    If the screen still displays the low-battery icon, try turning the iPhone or iPod touch off and then on again.
    If the issue persists, follow these troubleshooting steps.
    Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • I plug my ipod in, and it says it needs to be charged and never charges or shows up on my computer. But it works in the charger

    I plug my ipod in, and it says it needs to be charged and never charges or shows up on my computer. But it works in the charger. I cannot sync it, and the computer doesn't detect it. It charges in the charger, but as soon as you unplug it, the ipod shuts off. Doesn't charge in the computer at all.

  • Display suddenly changed I have tried changing in utilities but nothing works.  The print is enormous and out of focus the screen has shrunk in width but programs open too stretched in length? What can I do?

    The display suddently changed two days ago.  Everthing exploded in size.  I have tried changing the contrast but nothing works.  The display screen becomes either too wide, too long, or too narrow and in all cases the font is extra large and out of focus.  What can I do please   I am really disappointed since my iMac is only 2.5 months old.

    Don't think so.  But tried it anyway.  I have been into utilities and tried different contrast settings now I don't know what is the right one.  But no matter which one I tried I have either about a third of the screen black, with display centered as though hidden behind the black.  What is going on?
    Also, I have to say that I can't understand why there is no information anywhere on what the correct settings should be.
    Any ideas Capt?

  • Nexus 1000V. problem when working with the console VMWare

    I have a problem when working with the console VMWare.
    Sometimes it is impossible to connect any of the hypervisor to the guest OS managed by them.
    I get the message: "Unable connect to the MKS: Host address lookup for server <name of the hypervisor> failed: No such host is known."
    This message always appears in conjunction with the reconfiguration of virtual switch: "Reconfigure vNetwork Distributed Switch .... Initiated by Cisco_Nexus_1000V_ ....."
    Upon completion of the reconfiguration, Communication console, with guest OS is restored, or on its own or after a reboot srv-vc.
    In this time, I do not see any message in Nexus 1000v log.
    What is this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Smells of a DNS issue.  Are you sure your ESX hosts are reachable from your client via DNS hostname?  Try pinging them from a command prompt/terminal.  You may have DNS server issues.
    As a temp fix, edit your [windowspath]/system32/etc/drivers/hosts file and manually add the ESX host name and IP, then re-test.

  • Sound card installed but not work

    I've just reinstalled win xp and installed the creative drivers on the cd, rebooted the computer and was getting sound fine. I went ahead and installed some other drivers and software and now I'm getting no sound. I've go to the add hardware wizard and clicked on Creative SB Audigy (which has a yellow exlamtion point next to it) and clicked next and then I get this message:
    Your computer's system firmware does not include enough information to properly configure and use this device. To use this device, contact your computer manufacturer to obtain a firmware or BIOS update. (Code 35)
    This worked for me before (using the wizard to get the card working before I reinstalled win xp). I've also gone and updated my BIOS and I'm still having problems.
    I've check to see if there were any IRQ conflicts through device manager and there are none but it showes that the Audigy card has the IRQ of 44.
    I've also installed and reinstalled and tryied 'repair' of the drivers/software multiple times only to get nowhere and I've tried installing the driver updates off the site only to get messages saying that it can not find any sound cards installed.
    I have win xp sp2

    After the sound card driver install I installed Norton Internet Security and other small programs (firefox, spampal, ect...)
    My computer is custom built:
    P4 2.4GHz
    Soyo P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum
    VIA Chipset
    BIOS is by Award went from the 2AA6 to 2AA7 revision
    GB Ram
    Windows XP SP2 installed on a 7GB partition
    On board Audio is disable through the BIOS (have never used it since building the computer 2 years ago)
    Ati Radeon 9800 pro
    Ati HDTV Wonder
    Drivers for both ATI cards where installed after the issue with the sound happend. Problem seemed to appear after Norton was installed.Message Edited by oobedoob on 09-2-2005 2:38 AM

  • No Sound from speakers but Headphones work on HP All-In-One 23-p142

    I recently purchased my computer HP Pavillion 23-p142 with Windows 8.1 64bit on July 9, 2015 and everything was golden...couldn't be happier with it for my needs. Now, in just the last few days, the sound doesn't work at all. No sound from Windows Media Player, Youtube etc. Absolutley nothing. Not even system sounds. I've tried troubleshooting tips such as going into Computer Management> Services> Windows Audio and restarting that service...still no luck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Realtek HD Audio drivers several times and it worked on the very first attempt then the sound went away again after a few hours. I'm at a loss for what to try next...Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.  PS. I forgot to mention my headphones work fine. And here are some screenshots of devices...if that helps with anything.

    Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I have read your post on how you are not able to get sound from the speakers of your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter! Do you speakers work on another computer? Is there any software you need to install to properly configure your speakers on your system? In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on No Sound from the Speakers (Windows 8). This should help return the sound to your computer using your speakers. I also recommend returning your system back to a previous restore point before the issue occurred. This can be done by following the steps in this document on Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8).
    Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • My mini ipad the games the sound is gone but if you put the head set there is a sound

    hi

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
    If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

  • How do you get a cd out of the imac g5 drive if the computer doesn't know it's in there.  I've tried shutting it off and holding the mouse button, but nothing works because the computer can't eject what it isn't registering to be there in the first place.

    I can't get access to the cd that is probably slid past where it is supposed to go.  The computer doesn't note it is in there.  This happened once before and I used another cd to tap it into place, and then I could eject the cd.  It's a library music cd and nothing I've done to eject it, works.  The dvd drive is empty to the computer, even though I've tried to trick it by getting it to burn a cd or dvd.  It says insert disc.  Hope someone knows how to pop it into place or open the thing up to get access to the drive.  That cd is due!

    power off your machine.  hold down your left mouse button.  power on your machine.  This should eject the cd.
    Eject cd
    Here is a web page on twelve ways to eject the cd.
    http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/01-2003/01-16.ws
    You indicate you are running on a g5, but 10.6 doesn't run on on a G5.
    On a PowerPC-based Macintosh (but not an Intel-based Macintosh), you may use Open Firmware to eject a CD or DVD disc when normal methods for ejecting it have not succeeded.
    Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-o-f. Enter commands:
    eject cd
    mac-boot
