SOLVED: ODBC setup without using ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID} possible?

Hi All,
I've installed instant client 11.1.0.6 on RHEL linux.I can connect with sqlplus with connection string like
sqlplus user/pass@//host/service. ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID}, TNS_ADMIN are not set. That works fine. Can I achieve the same with odbc and isql? I would like to be able to run isql DSN and all the configuration of the DSN should go into /etc/odbc.ini and I shall not set up ORACLE_{HOME,BASE,SID}, TNS_ADMIN. Is that possible? If yes, how?

I wonder if it is possible to take it a step further and connect only providing the DSN and no setup in the environment at all.
All the configuration should be in odbc.ini. Does it make any difference if the application connects using SQLConnect()
or SQLDriverConnect()?

How to use ODBC SQLDriverConnect() without using tnsnames.ora file

I have an ODBC application that connects to an Oracle 10g database. Currently, my SQLDriverConnect() function call uses the following connection string:
DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}; DBQ=MyDB.world; DBA=W; UID=foo; PWD=bar
This requires an entry in the tnsnames.ora file that looks like this:

However, I would really like to be able to connect using ODBC without having to create that entry in the tnsnames.ora file. I have tried to substitute the DBQ=MyDB.world with the entire (DESCRIPTION=..... string from the original tnsnames.ora file, but it returns the error:
ORA-12154: TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
I have heard others are able to use sqlplus with no tnsnames.ora file and the do specify the entire (DESCRIPTION=.... string on the sqlplus connection string, but is this possible to do using the ODBC SQLDriverConnect() function? If so, do I need to use a different keyword/value pair other than DBQ=?

How would that work in a load balanced configuration? Take a closer look at the tnsnames.ora example I included in my original post. I have 4 ADDRESS= sections to denote 4 servers that are part of the load balanced environment.
Also, I'm not familiar with that syntax, I need to use the syntax supported by the SQLDriverConnect() API function, which looks like this:
DRIVER={Oracle in OraClient10g_home1}; DBQ=MyDB.world; DBA=W; UID=foo; PWD=bar
I don't know as SQLDriverConnect() would accept an alternative syntax. But the more important issue here is the ability to specify those 4 servers in the load balanced configuration as indicated by that tnsnames.ora entry.

Dual monitor setup without using the ADC?

Would it be possible to run a dual monitor setup using a DVI splitter cable from my (2009)Mac Pro?
I've seen some old forums referring to the 2006 models saying that this wouldn't work and instead you'd get the same image on both screens but the newer Mac Pros state they have "Dual-Link DVI ports".
Just wondering whether this means what I think it means and you can connect two monitors via a dual link cable and get essentially, two monitors running independently as opposed to the same thing on both??
Hope it's staightforward and me just being slow.

The GT120 features one Dual Link DVI-I port and one Mini DisplayPort .
The DVI-I is Dual Link capable, and also can be directly adapted to VGA.
Single-Link DVI is a serial interface that carries three data bits in each signaling interval, as well as control signals. In general, Single-Link supports displays up to 1920 wide. Dual Link DVI is the same except that it carries six data bits in each signaling interval, supporting displays over 1920 wide.
DVI screen drawing is very similar to VGA screen drawing, and the data sent are digital "scan lines" left-to-right row data, top-to-bottom with entire screen data sent about every 60 Hertz. Analog VGA signals are sent at the same time on a separate set of pins.
DisplayPort and its Mini variant are inherently a packet interface, but can be coerced to produce a "Dual Mode" signal that approximates Single-Link DVI. Getting Dual-Link DVI or VGA from DisplayPort interface requires a non-trivial converter than contains chips and requires power.
Executive Summary:
If you have one display that is wider than 1920 or VGA, attach to the DVI-I connector with an appropriate cable.
Running a Mini DisplayPort display from the Mini DisplayPort requires only a cable.
Single-Link DVI can be had from the Mini DisplayPort with a cheap adapter.
Dual-Link DVI or VGA requires an expensive Active Powered converter which can cost US$100.

Enable ACL on XSAN without using OD. Is it possible?

Are you using xSAN 2 or 1.4? With v2, you can stop the volume and open it's settings, checking ACL's. Oddly, I'm curious to why ACL's would make your permissions management easier. It generally in my experience has made it far more difficult to deal with permissions from different macs when enabled since there are additional "layers" of users above those assigned by XSAN directly.
If you have any OSX Server product running on the XSAN, you can start up a Directory Service on it. Just make sure all your XSAN clients and controllers have that machine's IP or Servername (xserve1.local) designated in the the app found in Applications/Utilities/Directory Utility. While it isn't maybe best practice to have the Metadata controller doubling as an OD server, it isn't really a huge deal if your SAN is small. Any performance hits on the SAN would be minimal compared to the huge task of keeping up with all your mac's users and settings all the time.
Making your own simple OD server would work as long as your XSAN isn't part of a larger network. My company has Active Directory for the main LAN and the addition of a simple but separate OD for xSAN users has caused many problems when those same macs write to the LAN volumes.

Does anyone know if there is a tap or gesture on the screen to get you back to teh main menu without having to click the home button? for example I started some music and then wanted to access the web. once in cover flow there doesnt seem to be a way to escape to the main menu without using the home button? am I mistaken ?

As far as I know, you must press the Home button in the situation you described. A gesture that always takes you home would be a welcomed addition, though. But in actuality, what's the difference between pressing the Home button once as opposed to making a gesture or tap on the screen itself?

Dual monitor setup without Xinerama or TwinView

I've searched the forum looking for anyone who is using a dual display setup without using Xinerama or TwinView. There are plenty of discussions to the contrary, but I running one window manager (DWM) on my primary monitor and anything else on the secondary monitor. I don't care about dragging between displays or any of the other features of Xinerama and TwinView offer, but my current implementation is rather crude.
So, I'm looking for a discussion on the this topic.
Current setup:
* Thinkpad T61 with NVIDIA M140 graphics
* Samsung 24" external monitor (245bw)

[SOLVED] Hibernate works when using rmmod, but not SUSPEND_MODULES

I've been having trouble hibernating (or suspending) an ASUS U36JC laptop.
Running pm-suspend causes the computer to hang on a blank screen with
an unblinking cursor. I have found that this is caused by two modules not
suspending properly, ath9k and ehci_hcd.
Using rmmod to remove the modules makes suspend work:
# rmmod ath9k
# rmmod ehci_hcd
# pm-suspend # Suspend will now work
So I created a file /etc/pm/config.d/modules containing the line:
SUSPEND_MODULES="ath9k ehci_hcd"
But in this setup (without using rmmod) the original problem is back!
The computer hangs on a blank screen with an unblinking cursor after
I run suspend.
The log file /var/log/pm-suspend.log shows that the modules are unloaded:
Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/75modules suspend suspend:
Unloading kernel module echi_hcd...Done.
Unloading kernel module ath9k...Done.
What could be causing the SUSPEND_MODULES solution to fail when the
rmmod solution works?

But: Did you retype the output above, or is the log really calling it "echi_hcd" ??

I need to get the "Creation Script" of the existing table using c# and without using SMO dlls (is it possible? I don't know).
I.e. In SQL Management Studio -> right click on any table -> Script table as -> Create To - > open in the new query editor window. This will give you the schema of the table with the constraints of the table.
For E.g. In Northwind database, for the table "Categories", I would like to get it as show below

SMO is the easiest way to get this. This is what Management Studio uses. If you can't use SMO, get a Profiler trace of the queries that SMO executes when generating the script and execute the same using ADO.NET.

You can use wlst or jmx to perform all security config etc.. same as if it were perfomred from the admin console..
.e.g. wlst create user
