[SOLVED] offline install

Hey fellow Archers.
I am attempting to install Archlinux onto my lappy so i can move that away from Xubuntu
point 1:
The reason for me doing this 'offline' is that i ONLY have a 3G connection to the internet & want to keep my bandwidth usage down to a total minimum so as to avoid astronomic bill (I live in South Afric & my provider is MTN = big bandwidth costs)
So i have a snapshot of my pacman cache from my Desktop which i have copied to my usb thumb drive.
I originally attempted this using the old media (CORE 2011.08.19) once i got that installed i faced some issue's with the initial update (using my cache), i followed the wikki & still faced problems so i jumped into the IRC channel requesting some small advice re the filesystem & glibc issue's  & was promptly told to get the new iso & read the wikki!!!!!!!! (did they not see the background i gave & that i stated i had read the wikki & still had issue's)
So now i have the latest media (downloaded in a quick 8 hours!!!) i am booted into it & now i am trying t use my pac cache (mounted as /mnt2)
my target for this install is
/dev/sdb8 mounted at /mnt
the commands i have tried so far:
[initially i wanted to do it the arch way & first mounted my usb stick to /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg]
pacstrap /mnt base <<<<this began to download so i had to cancel (see point 1)
[remounted usb drive as /mnt2]
pacman --root /mnt --cachedir /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg --dbpath /mnt/var/lib/pacman --logfile /mnt/var/log/pacman.log -U *
this gave the following error:
error:'/mnt2/pkg/accountsservice-0.6.18-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz': duplicate target
how can I move forward with this?
i have tried to use pacserve but that just redirects to my desktop mirror list thus downloading what i already have!
I did ask this question on IRC but was not given much advice & was mainly told the channel was created by someone who hated arch & that the IRC channel is not helpful as it is full of n00bs!
however one guy did respond nicley & pointed me in the right direction but alas i still face the above issue
thanks in advance for any & all responses

ngoonee wrote:
Use arch-chroot as mentioned in the wiki. Before that, mount your root to /mnt or wherever and then mount your cache to /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg.
EDIT: if you have terrible and expensive Internet you should probably not use Arch....
i tried to
arch-chroot /mnt
mount: mountpoint /mnt/etc/resolv.conf does not exist
chroot: failed to run command /bin/sh: no such file or directory
umount: /mnt/etc/resolv.conf: not found
I gathered this was due to me not having a base install (which is contained in my package cache)
I already use Arch on my Desktop, i just do not see the point in re-downloading something which I already have as it is a pure waste of my pricey bandwidth.
Thought:
I have noticed that I am being told from multiple people (forum/IRC) that perhaps Arch is not for me!!!!
WHY I love this distro, I have tried so many before which have never come close to what i want which is what I find in Arch but I guess some do not want this to get popular & to think I was considering making a donation why should I if I am being told to go away!

  • [Solved](Offline) install of packages, pacman.conf?

Good morning (or what ever time of the day it is for you now )!
I tried offline installation as this guide http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … f_packages instructed plus configured pacman.conf to have Server = file:///var/lib/pacman/sync/approriate_dir lines. When trying pacman -Sp --noconfirm any_package I get ERROR: not found in sync db. Is there something I should know? Is my pacman.conf file made by an ass ?
Last edited by aCyd (2008-03-24 11:53:22)

I fixed it. This is how (maybe someone finds this useful):
the pacman that came with the installation cd was apparently different version than the one used when writing the wiki. It wouldn't look for the core.db.tar.gz and the other files from the /var/lib/pacman/sync/core etc folders (perhaps it would have found them from the /var/lib/pacman/core etc folders there were already, who knows didn't try).
    I made a folder called /mnt/usb
    mkdir /mnt/usb
mounted the usb stick (it showd as sdb1 for me)
    mount /dev/sdx /mnt/usb
    and added
    Server = file:///mnt/usb/Arch
to my pacman.conf under [core], [extra] and [community] so pacman found them from my usb stick along with packages. I also made sure that the 'Include /path/to/mirrorlist' was commented. No tar command was needed.
pacman -Sp --noconfim {package-name} > pkglist
didn't work for me. I just got the last error line without any package names. Instead I used grep
pacman -Syu --noconfirm | grep error > pkglist
    and upgraded the whole system.
I modified the pkglist in emacs with replace-string to remove '' from disk : No such file or directory' after the package name and then again to replace 'error: failed retrieving file '' with the url of my selected mirror. (I know that could have been done more elegantly using sed or something or even a proper regexp in emacs if not with the command) After that I downloaded the packages as instructed, copied them to my usb and mounted it to my Arch system and ran again
    pacman -Syu

  • Offline install of Windows 7 SP1 not recognised by Windows Update

    Hi
I have asked this question over at the Windows Community forum, and someone suggested that I ask here.
This question regards Windows 7 and Service pack 1
I bought a couple of new computers, and decided to use the offline SP1 installation on each to get the computers up to date when I first configured them.
So I downloaded the offline update iso from Microsoft, created a DVD and installed SP1.
After configuring my computer, I then connected windows update to get all fixes etc since SP1.
To my dismay windows update has presented me with a list of *all* updates, including SP1.
Is there any way of getting Windows update to recognise the fact that I already have SP1 installed?
    Further info:
This is the procedure I went through.
    1) Built the computers
    2) Installed Windows 7
    3) Installed hardware device drivers
    4) Installed SP1 from DVD
    5) Connected to the internet
    6) Activated Windows
    7) Used Windows Update
    8) Installed the fix/patch required for windows update to work
    9) re-connected to windows update
    10) Was dismayed at the list of fixes requiring download. (around 148)
After going through the process of downloading the updates, at around the time of the second re-boot, the list of updates included Service Pack 1.
AV Software was going to be the next thing to install, after the computer was *fully* patched
    Further Further informatio :)
I have since gone ahead and installed Windows on my second computer.
I'm still interested in finding a solution for future reference.
After installing Windows7 and applying the offline SP1 update, I checked to see what updates were installed before
activation and connecting to windows update.
    These are the updates listed.
    1) Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 (KB976902)
    2) Update for MS Windows (KB976902)
    3) User Mode Driver framework V1.11 (KB2685813)
    4) KB958488 (the list just haqd the kb number, no title)
    5) Hot Fix for Windows (KB2505454)
My original question, and the answers/feedback can be viewed at the following page:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/offline-install-of-windows-7-sp1-not-recognised-by/e8ab61d0-8669-4297-acfd-4acc0da8c1dc?rtAction=1427893878897
    Cheers...
    Daz

    Hi Daz,
You mentioned that the SP1 prompted again in the needed updates, I suspect that that is not the full service pack, it is only some changes to existing non-security content, appropriate 10 MB size. you can check the size of the update to confirm
    this.
See more information in this link
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/894199
And after you have manually installed the updates offline, have you checked whether these updates are listed in the "installed updates", or in Update history? And you can check the new detected updates, whether they have been successfully installed
in your system. Meanwhile, when you check for updates online, please check your Windows Update settings, we recommend you to check for important updates, not optional updates or hotfix. You can install the optional update or hotfix when you need it in the
    future.

  • NetWeaver Gateway Productivity Accelerator (GWPA) Offline Install

So far, all of the other tools available at https://tools.hana.ondemand.com/ have an offline install available at https://service.sap.com/swdc/.  My company's security policies block me from performing online installs.
Is there an offline install available for GWPA?

I believe this write-up can answer your queries. SAP Gateway Developer Tools – Bridging the Past, Present and Future
SAP has officially ended the support of Eclipse Juno in the end of June 2014. As SAP generally tries to support the current and the previous versions of Eclipse, we will soon remove references tohttps://tools.hana.ondemand.com/juno from the index pages. Only the tools which support Eclipse Kepler and Luna will be listed on “SAP Development Tools for Eclipse” update site.
Are you not able to install GWPA components in eclipse junos?

  • I need an offline install for firefox v26, can you please advise where I can get this?

I need an offline install for firefox v26, can you please advise where I can get this?

    Hi haydenr,
It's best to use the latest version of Firefox if you can, but you can download Firefox 26 here:
    http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/26.0/android/
Just choose your locale (British English is en-GB, American English is en-US, etc) and then click the link for the apk file. :)
    Hope that answers your question!

  • [Solved?] Installing multiple versions of Firefox at the same time

I would like to install the normal Firefox in the repositories and also firefox-pgo-minefield-smp from the AUR so that I may use either one as desired.
Looking at the current PKGBUILD from http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33506 (pkgbuild @ http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/firef … p/PKGBUILD ) I am thinking that perhaps I would modify this line:
    export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/usr/lib/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
to reflect the path where I would like to install it like so:
    export LDFLAGS="-Wl,-rpath,/opt/firefox-$_prever -Wl,-O1,--sort-common,--hash-style=gnu,--as-needed"
And then presumably fix my symlink at /usr/bin/firefox to point back to /usr/lib/firefox-2.6 again. (and also fix the menu links and I realize I would have to use an ugly 'pacman -U tarball --force' to install it -- there's got to be a better way as that is very ugly and wrong surely???? Perhaps modify the pkgname as well as conflicts and provides so I could install it more normally?)
Correct?  Would I also need to modify a prefix or such besides this and if so where in the pkgbuild (ideally) or source would you recommend (must I change the actual makefile or does my modification in the PKGBUILD take care of this?  Would you in your experience recommend another approach for this?
I thought it wise to ask here before hacking away with this stuff and possibly hosing my system in unforeseen ways.   Please forgive my greenness.  I have spent a few hours researching this but still am not quite sure thus I ask. While I think I could do it with a straight compile with a modified configure I'm unsure of how to do it best using the arch tools...
    Thanks for your time.

Basically solved but not yet mastered.
So I've figured out how to do this, it works, but not yet optimally and I am unsure about some things.  Namely:

The goal is to have this work independently from the standard firefox allowing me to run both on the system at the same time.
Anyone see anything that I have missed and could fix as far as doing the separate install in /opt using makepkg and the pkgbuild?   I've been using arch less than a month and this is the first I've really hacked with a PKGBUILD and mozconfig so I feel I could really use the help. Any insight appreciated greatly.

  • [SOLVED] New Install of Gnome 3.2 doesn't feel like loading

    Greetings,
Before making this post, I have spent the majority of the day trying to solve this issue. I have switched from nvidia drivers to nouvela (sp?) drivers, incase that was the issue. I have scoured google, arch-wiki, and the forums until my eyes have bled. I have dug through the xsession-errors log to search out any missing components that might be causing this... but to no avail. If anything, trying to run and try Gnome 3.2 has made me feel like a complete idiot, who has obviously learnt nothing after years of using linux. So, I come here hoping that some one can point me to the solution my brain cannot itself come up with.
    Here the situation:
I have been running KDE4 for quite some time happily. I have ran Gnome 3 back in its beginning days succesfully as well, but that was an older, now dead, pc. Having seen some neat little things about the new Gnome 3.2, I got an itch to give it a try. So, I go and follow the Gnome article on the excellent arch wiki- installing both gnome and gnome extras, letting it grab everything, change from kdm to gdm, and reboot.
Well, it gives me the old gdm I remember from the early gnome 3 days (wasn't this changed) despite it showing that it is GDM 3.2 via pacman. It shows my user name, lets me put my password, and shows the stripped background. One thing to note is that the cursor remains a clock face, never changing to a pointer.
I log in, choosing GNOME, all that remains is the wallpaper, with the clockface cursor, no pointer. I go take the kids to the bus stop, come back apx. 20 min. later, no change.
Ok, bug crushing time right? So I go through the steps. I make sure that gnome shell is indeed installed. I remove any config files (there weren't any), remove gnome shell, reinstall. No go. I rinse and repeat, but removing & reinstalling different things, such as GDM, and even gnome completely. No go.
Hopping into pekwm, I search. I make copies of the xsession-errors each time, and load them in pekwm after a reboot, looking through with pacman by myside to make sure I have any possible missing files. And finally after failure after failure I give up, and come here.
So, here's my xsession-errors log. Please, if anyone can help, or even offer any kind of suggestion that might spark something in my brain to get me going in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. If this thread needs moved, merged, etc, please do so... I've searched the forums, but now my brain is numb, so yeah...

Ok, I guess all it took was for me to post this to wake up and be able to solve the issue.
It is simple really. I just needed to re-install libltdl.
So, for those searching, if you get this similar problem,
    pacman -S libltdl
is what solved it for me.

For someone with 300+ posts, you ask pretty hopeless questions. Please read How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
    and include some relevant details.
Where is the binary? What does the documentation say? How are you trying to "execute it"? What have you tried? etc...

  • [SOLVED] KDE install problem

    Hi folks,
I am trying to install KDE on my Arch Linux flash drive and I'm having 1 problem. I typed pacman -S kde, and about 20% through the whole download, it gets to the file called "libwbclient-4.0.7-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz". It then starts going through a LOT of mirrors trying to find one that works, but every single one says "The requested URL returned error: 404 not found". I checked with my phone and another computer that my internet is working, and I paused the download and pinged Google to make sure the laptop I'm using still had a connection (it did). Any ideas?

    Ah, shucks
We do ask that those who start threads to mark them as solved when appropriate.  We ask that you do it as only you know when it ir really solved.  Just edit the first post in the thread and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the thread title.
Thanks, and, again, welcome to Arch.

  • [SOLVED] Offline Installation Help

I'm new to Arch. It's just 2 days since I've downloaded the iso. I installed it and it worked really nice. However, I messed up the system trying out some experiments.
Now I want to reinstall it. I have my /var/cache/pacman/pkg folder backed up. Is there a way I can skip the humongous download and install these? My ISP gives me really low bandwidth speeds. Thanks in advance.

  • Pacman.conf NEED tips for totally offline install with DVD repository

OBJECTIVE: after a base install with ARCHBOOT be able to install from DVD repository which contains repo-add database.
My DVD contains the folder from /var/cache/pacman/pkg.
ON the DVD I have the folder 'pkg' at the dvd root level and another folder which has my already built packages fro AUR.
The database called 'custom.db.tar.gz' created with repo-add exists IN the pkg folder on the DVD.
The built AUR packages are in a seperate folder called '_built' at the dvd's root level as well and they are not included in the repo-add database.
I am able to mount the dvd, cd to the pkg folder and use  pacman -Ud to install them though this requires that I type in the full name of the package and I get dependence issues and '*.so' type files not found.
IF I copy all the files from the DVD to the var/cache/pacman/pkg folder I am able to add my local repository to pacman.conf and MUCH more efficient install. I can use pacman -S xorg for example, and I think it finds dependencies even. Can't recall exactly at the moment.
SO: do I need to alter pacman.conf  cache location line and the other lines?
Would I change the 2nd and 3rd lines to get max pacman ability when using DVD repository???
Pointing them to my DVD folder after mounting the dvd
    #RootDir     = /
    #DBPath      = /var/lib/pacman/
    #CacheDir    = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    #LogFile     = /var/log/pacman.log
I really would like to have as much power and flexibility when using the DVD as the repo.
Can anyone tell me what I should alter in pacman.conf for this.
I am fine if I have to alter the cache location line temporarily if it will give me additional pacman ability.
I have read all the wiki stuff for sure though I'm still a bit in the dark and wanted to ask without typing the many many options.
One big one for me is I don't yet know how to set the SERVER = in pacman.com to look at the mounted DVD and the pkg folder specifically.
    I do mount /dev/sr0  /mnt/cdrom
So what would I put as the SERVER for this in pacman.conf
    SERVER = /dev/sr0   ?????   or   /dev/cdrom  ????    or /mnt/cdrom I think ????
    dunno!
AND I really probably DO have to temporarily alter the pacman.conf  cache location line to get pacman to do dependency installs and let me type short lines instead of the full package name.
THANKS! this one is BIG for me!!!!! :---)

COMMENT WRITTEN LAST: I was about to delete a lot of stuff here though thought to just say sorry for not taking the brain-time to slim it. The bold and white boxed part is the main related quest-ion.
you might find a few useful tools on my site (in my sig), e.g. pkgd if you want to save bandwidth on a LAN --- pbget if you want to easily get PKGBUILDs etc from the AUR and official repos, etc.
WOW Xyne !!!! thanks.  pbget etc. sound very cool.
I used yaourt until very recently. Then went ....hmmmm... should learn about manual building and local repo. Where I'm at now is trying to do as much manually as possible. I think I kinda know what packages I want and there will only be some changes from that in the future. There's maybe 20 packages from AUR for me. [PLUS their dependencies]
Of course: I am doing the repo-add local repositories thing for speed, learning, and as part of my whole 'best practices' growth. Plus it will come in very handy when helping other decide quickly if a barbones mainly wm/ncurses lightweight system is for them.
You certainly spark a question or two!
[AUR and dependencies via yaourt affecting my plans to now go manually]
As these have all ALREADY been installed via yaourt my BIG concern is that I've never found much of a yaourt/cache folder. You see, as you'd know many many times upon installing vai yaourt there's some dependency that may, or I guess, may not be in the standard repos.
After installing these packages via yaourt do the dependencies go into /var/cache/pacman.pkg and is pacman aware of it when I do a repo-add for thecustom database. If so, then all if fairly cool for my plans. I bet there's a few idiosyncrasies about AUR and dependencies maybe.
    -AUR dependency resolution-
Using a custom repo will not really work for general use because you would need to manually populate the database with the dependencies anyway.
I'm fine with manually doing dependencies - though need to know if my yaourt usage ALREADY put the latest dependencies in the pacman cache for AUR unsupported packages AND is there a way with the whole repo-add, local repositry, pacman and aur concpt I'm planning to fine tune to have the dependencies update when I go back to the online repositries? I don't think so based on my usage with yaourt, though can't quite recall.
As I will be enjoying makepkg building the group of packages I nee to get from AUR for the forseeable future (that are not in the main 3 repos of course)
I'm still wondering about the inter-relationships. So: I already have installed and/or built the packages for everything I expect to need mostly.   I never became beyone mediocre with yaourt.  and that fine, though I now have to consider that in a new install I DO have the latest AUR built packages, though will there be the right dependencies ALREADY in my /var/cache/pacman/pkg ?
There's a few things that I'd love to really understand about this. Even if it ends up that dependencies for the AUR packages is always a bit trickier.
QUESTION: right now I am uable to try custom repo from flash stick as it's read only. I'll be googling this one out and am really looking forward to having a flash stick with ARCHBOOT and I gues ONE repo pkg folder and database on it.
NOTE: I will put the custom repo above the stock ones in pacman.conf. I just commented out the others as I was doing all this offline.
I've dumped the dvd as a repo and have switched to a flash stick.  I've extracted the archboot out to a 4 gig flash stick.
dd if=/root/Desktop/archlinux-2009.05-2-archboot.iso of=/dev/sdb  Its read-only at the moment and no matter what I've tried it stays that way. Maybe I need to use the HPutil on it. It definitely isn't writeable so I won't ponder or note observations here save to say that 'm stumped as to how to get files copied to it.
And now what may be the way I'd like to work:    Keep my folder for building packages from aur which is /root/aur. Then after doing the fun makepkg --asroot   or even makepg -i as root to install. Though I'll probably after the build THEN just copy the built packages from my /root/aur to /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and install from there as I DO plan to use the online repos.
I will ALSO copy the file to my USB stick or maybe just sync to it and do a the repo-add thing in   /var/cache/pacman/pkg   and keep the stick as both backup and 'in the ready' reinstaller.
Um, now  could spend an hour editing down the above!!!
    wondrous thanks!

Thank God, everything is fixed now:
First, I deleted all these files, then i follows the following procedure
    1. For libgexiv2 file i upgraded 'xorg-server, xorg-xinit, xorg-utils, xorg-server-utils' from pacman
    # pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils
    2. For libraw file i upgraded 'libraw' from pacman
    # pacman -S libraw
There will be some conflicting files
After deleting some conflicting files it solves the problem and restore all the 'lib' file.
