SOLVED openbox crashes on certain programs

I am running openbox as my desktop enviornment on my macbook. Arch Linux 64 OS.
When I try to boot up either eboard or scid (only 2 I've had problems with so far) it starts to bring them up but then openbox dissapears and I see the terminal asking me to login for a second before it goes to my openbox login screen. Anyone know why this would happen?

Try starting either program from a terminal to see what errors, if any, are generated.

  • Sudden, repeated, unavoidable crashes in certain programs...

    Hi everyone,
I use a certain set of chemical drawing tools for my job on a daily basis. Recently a new version of this software suite was released, and promised to fix a number of issues. I installed the new suite along side my older versions - Sometimes the new version has huge problems, and it's necessary to roll back. Anyhow, after working with the new version, I quickly realized that certain critical compatibility features were irreversibly broken. No problem, I figured. I can just roll back, which is why I had the previous versions installed still.
    Wrong.
Whenever I try to launch any of the three old versions of this software, now they IMMEDIATELY crash with the following error:

It doesn't matter which of the older versions I try to launch, this is the error I receive. The newest version continues to operate normally, but as I said its use is not possible due to other issues in the software.
I've contacted the developer, but they do not respond. Is there any way to diagnose this error and fix it? I've tried running Disk Utility and rebooting, but the error continue to happen immediately. If someone might be able to shed some light onto why this would be happening so consistently and repeatedly, I'd be most appreciative.

    Hello Carbonyl,
We would be glad to help you with issues you may have using our software. To get technical help, please email [email protected] You will receive an auto-response with your ticket number and an agent should follow up with you soon afterward.
As a side note, we’re not sure what issues you are having with version 12.0.2 that would be fixed by an older version. We encourage our users to use the latest version, and would like to help you troubleshoot any issues you have with the latest version.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox Autostarting only some programs

Ok, so I've tried searching the forums and either cannot find the one that answers my question or it doesn't exist.  Either way, I have my openbox autostart script set up like this:
    xcompmgr &
    nitrogen --restore &
    yakuake &
    cairo-dock &
The file is saved as ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh Only cairo dock and yakuake start up at the start of the openbox session.  The cairo dock has the black box around it from xcompmgr not being run but then if i manually start it in a terminal with "xcompmgr" then it goes away like it should.  So xcompmgr won't autostart and nitrogen won't restore either.  Nitrogen works if I manually do it after the openbox session has begun but only stays while i'm logged in, no restoring upon next login.  I'm trying to figure out if I have some syntax wrong?  I've tried separating the xcompmgr as far away from the cairo dock to give it more time to load but nothing...any help would be very appreciated.
other info: I have no DE, just the dock, openbox and nitrogen for my desktop.

  • [SOLVED] Certain programs crash the GUI (ATI graphics card)

    Hi all,
When I start certain programs, the GUI crashes and becomes inreadable. I can't see the text, buttons or anything. It is as if 'bricks' have been moved around.
When I log on to a Virtual Consile, I can restart GDM, login and all is fine, untill I start the certain programs again.
It seems to be these two programs causing the GUI to crash:
LibreOffice (It automatically starts in the document restore mode, after the last crash - which crashes the GUI )
    Keepass
Other programs I can use jsut fine:
    Gimp
    FireFox
    Chromium
    Eclipse
    Rhythmbox
    Banshee
I do not know what causes this, nor where I should start looking. I've skimmed through the error logs, but I do not see anything suspecious.
I'm running arch linux, 64 - bit, and it is fully updated, open source ati drivers.
Where should I start looking, and what might cause this problem?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Changed the subject to solved, and added the info that I use an ATI card.

  • [Solved]Openbox dual monitor crashing

I have been working this out for days to no avail. I have an ATI video card not using the catalyst drivers. Dual monitors worked fine in KDE without any additional setup, and no xorg.conf. In openbox i have tried with arandr, and manual. but when i enable the second monitor its seems that openbox crashes, because whatever is on the screen at the time of enabling the monitor turns to static. I think its openbox because i still have a functional mouse cursor and has proper fucntions accross both monitors in any configuration that i try. when it crashes i have to hard reboot. when i reboot with the monitor still plugged in, both lvds and vga will display a cloned image at the same resolution which is the wrong resolution for both lvds and vga.
I have googled till there is no link unclicked, and wiki give me nothing. i dont believe that i need to set up an xorg.conf as the external is detected fine. its almost like when x applies the settings it corrupts openbox.
    anyone have any ideas?

I mean add the monitors to xorg.conf.  Here is the xorg.conf I use with openbox (separate X display for the TV), just to give you an idea - yours will differ with ATI:

Then I start the second X display on the TV with this in openbox's autostart.sh:
    (sleep 5 && xinit /usr/bin/openbox -- /usr/bin/X :1 -layout tv -nolisten tcp) &
Thus there are two instances of openbox running.
It may not give you the flexibility, but for testing it may help you narrow down what is causing the problem and find remedies.
Also, the monitor turning to static sounds more like a driver or X issue than something with openbox.

  • New headset, but certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not headphones.

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
    Hello,
    Hello,
I just recently purchased a new headset for gaming but have been having some issues with it and the system sound. One major issue is when I call someone on skype, the sound from Skype or the call will go through the headphones, but any other audio comes out of the speakers. I have also notices that iTunes also does not function when I am in a call as well. Some examples would be if I were to want to watch a YouTube video while in a call, the sound would come through the speakers and not the headphones. However, I did find a fix for it. All I had to do was disable the main speakers and the audio was transmitted to the headphones. Another example would be if I wanted to run games via Steam (Garry's Mod, TF2, ect.), I wouldn't get any sound whatsoever from the game. Not through my speakers or headphones. With one exception, Garry's Mod volume I can hear through the speakers while in a Skype call, but I want the sound to come through the headphones. But with TF2, I get no sound whatsoever. If you need any more information about my issue, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

    Hello @LayneStaley,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not the headphones, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure that your headphones are utilized when plugged into your notebook, I recommend following the steps below:
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Click on Hardware and Sound (sorting the control panel icons by "category"), and then click on Sound
    4. Under Playback, you should see one or two speaker icons. One of them should already have a green checkmark next to it (which will be your notebook's main speakers). If the second Speakers icon is not visible, right-click in the list of devices and select Show Disabled Devices
    5. A second, disabled icon of "speakers" should appear. Right-click this icon and click Enable
    6. Select the newly enabled speaker device, right-click it, and select "Set as Default Device".
    7. Click Apply.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • IMac trouble opening certain programs

problem is: i will try to open certain programs, they will quickly appear in the dock, and then the icon will fade away without ever opening the program.
this particular problem began a little over a year ago when i upgraded to tiger. i was running pro tools frequently at the time, and did not realize that my pro tools program would not be compatible with the new OS. so i downgraded back to 10.3.9, and that's when this particular problem began.
i knew there would be consequences to my downgrade like this. my printer no longer interfaced with my computer, safari no longer opened, etc. and i dealt with it. however, i got a strange message yesterday when i went to open a .txt file saying "this is the first time you've used the program Text Edit", and then i got it again a few minutes ago when i tried to open System Preferences ("this is the first time you've used the program System Preferences"). now for the first time ever, my System Preferences will not open.
my most recent actions have been updating iChat A/V, updating Limewire, messing with some .bin files, and it says my "AppleScript" was modified last night around the time i got the message about Text Edit (which is odd because i've never used AppleScript).

If you think a corrupted preference file may be the cause, you can run a quick command line in Terminal to diagnose any troublesome ones. If it shows any corrupted prefs files, then you can delete only those, then restart.
    Open Utilities>Terminal
    enter:
    plutil -s ~/Library/Preferences/*.plist <enter>
This checks for corrupted prefs files in your home folder. If there are any, it will display the file's path. Just delete that file and reboot. If nothing is displayed, then everything checked out okay.
You should also check prefs files OUTside of your home folder by omitting the tilde "~" in the terminal command. Like so:
    plutil -s /Library/Preferences/*.plist <enter>
Again, bad prefs files will show, otherwise you get nothing.
This may not help your problem if it's not prefs related, but couldn't hurt nonetheless.

In Lion, running on an I MAC, (late 2006), how can I stop certain programs (iTunes, Word) from automatically starting up when I start the computer?

Any application that is open when you shut down will re-open when you restart unless you deselect this when shutting down/restarting:
Also check System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login items tab and make sure there's nothing listed there that you don't want launched.

  • Multiple crashes within certain apps.

Recently, i started to suspect my computer had gotten malware. I took the steps nessicary to remove it.
    Check for updates.
    Downloaded 2 different anti-virus software.
    Quarentine and delete/clean infected files.
The suspicion started when i found my iTunes store crashing. iTunes its self had worked fine when it was not connecting to the internet. Later i had found that not only itunes but also iPhoto, Spotify, Skype, and Hulu Desktop Also crashed upon opening every time. I am wondering what is causing this, i can still acess my photo's from the HD but not when using iPhoto. If you have any ideas on how to help solve the crashes, please respond.

  • Blocking p2p or setting up a firewall to only allow certain programs?

    Hello there,
I have a wireless dual-n router (WRT610N) and a cable modem (CM100) both from linksys.
My problem is that we live in an aprtment with 6 people and sometimes the connection crawls even with 2-3 people using the internet. My concern is that my roommates are file sharing like hell sometimes and eating all the bandwith. We're talking 20second to load the google main page slow, no person should be making the network that slow when it's just me and them using it.
So I'm interested in options to block access to bandwith killing activities. Friends have recommended that I set up a firewall and only permit certain programs access but I have no idea how to go about doing this. Another option would be if their was just a way to limit their bandwith, I already have my computer set with the highest prioriety on the network and it doesn't help.
Please let me know of any solutions you can suggest for this problem it sucks to be dishing out extra for highspeed internet + powerboost just to have all of fizzle away the second the connection hits the router.

You cannot limit their computer's bandwidth, however if you know what time they are using the bandwidth and downloading from Internet you may block the Internet access for them using the Access Restrictions, you can enter their MAC Addresses and schedule a time when you want to Deny Internet Access for them...

  • Mail.app crashes when certain messages are selected

I recently migrated a user from OS X 10.4 to 10.5. When we run Mail.app, it will crash when certain messages are clicked.
I've tried everything I could to get the mail in in a different way -- importing it in different ways, deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist, and re-importing, etc.
It certainly seems that the problem is tied to the individual message, as clicking on a certain message, even if it is in different folders (because of the way it was imported) causes the crash.
Most of the dozen-or-so crash logs start like this:

My guess, the email(s) are from windos users?
I had this problem, until I switched to thunderbird. A few people, using a version (don't remember the version number) of outlook/outlook express, would send multimedia attachments.
As soon as I would select the email, Mail would crash.
I would copy the offending email to a folder with no other contents, and then open it up with TextEdit, to view the non-attachment portion.

Could you try this against the released 3.2 version of AIR and our 3.3 beta to see if it still occurs?  If so, please open a new bug report on this over at bugbase.adobe.com?  Include any sample code or application to help us easily reproduce the problem.  If you'd like to keep your code private, please feel free to send it to me directly at [email protected]  In addition, if you can give us a .dmp of this crash it could be very helpful.
Please post back with the URL so that others affected can add their comments and votes.

  • Safari 6.0.5 crashing on certain sites

Safari is continually crashing on certain sites. Such as ESPN and a site with a java based game called warlight.net. I have done everything I can think of. Im a new MBP owner. So im in a bit of uncharted territory here. I could use some major help here.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn extensions back on then uninstall one extension at a time, quit and relaunch Safari, test again until you find the one causing Safari to crash.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here
If you can't resolve the problem, the next time Safari crashes, copy and paste the entire crash report on your Reply.

  • IOS 6 keeps crashing non-native programs

I recently upgraded my iPod touch to iOS 6 and non-native programs keep crashing.  Important programs that I need for work!! I took it to that Applestore and an employee told me that I just have to wait for the non-native program writers to send me updates.
Can I just switch back to the old OS?

All we can say in this Apple forum is that downgrading the IOS is not support by Apple.
Sometimes this works, at least for some apps.
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
