[SOLVED] Output of "top" persistent after exit

So, I have been using arch for a couple months, and through my own idiocy I have reinstalled arch.  Everything is pretty much back how it used to be (I didn't have a whole lot going on to begin with), except fot the niggling little issue of top's output remaining on the screen after I press q.
I've tried to look through the forum and the wiki (both here and others online) and havent found anything which seemed to be what i am looking for.  I'm just hoping someone might know what i've done incorrectly.  (I'm assuming this is something I've fat fingered)
I'm doing this all from an ssh session, btw.   Also, I don't think it is a local issue as when I run top locally, it behaves as I have always known top to behave.
btw, I have a suspicion this might be a bash issue, but I have nowhere near enough bash configuration experience to know how to troubleshoot this.

It's a feature, not a bug. AFAIK, top always left behind the last frame when you quit. It makes it easier to spot the process if it's not moving up and down all the time, and to freely copy-paste something without jumping from one line to the next (the list is sorted based on CPU usage). Having it stay still is also very useful if you want to change the niceness level of a program by its PID.

  • [SOLVED] Bash: pkill a process after exiting from another one?

    Hi there, I use a program which calls another one, but when I close the first one, the second one is not closed automatically even if not anymore needed, so I have to do it manually.
    I tried a classic:
    firstprogram
    pkill secondprogram
    but, of course, this script closes immediately the secondprogram.
    So, what I supposed to do?
    Thank you in advance!

    thank you, I did it:
    firstprogram
    wait
    pkill secondprogram
    it works, woah

  • [SOLVED] Steam troubles. Segfault after login.

    Hello. I'm usually pretty good about solving my own problems, but this one has me beat. So, yay, first post.
    Recently my nephew brought me his computer for a nuke and pave, and since he doesn't have a legit Windows key and I don't use Windows anymore I decided to install Arch on his machine, since it's what I use and I'm their go-to tech support.
    Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting Steam to run correctly on his machine. It will start up, update/verify install, show the login screen, and after authenticating it promptly dies.
    Some details:
    This is a somewhat fresh install. I provisioned it from within a Vbox VM on my own workstation and then moved the HDD to the actual box.
    Full system update was done just today. Problem existed prior and persists after.
    Proprietary GPU drivers are not being used.
    lspci shows the video adapter to be: 07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G71 [GeForce 7900 GS] (rev a1)
    I've already removed Steam's bundled libs, as per the wiki.
    I've tried steam --reset and rm -rf ~/.steam and removing and reinstalling the steam package. No dice.
    The presentation of problems detailed here seemed pretty similar so I installed lib32-dbus but this did not resolve the issue.
    I'm not checking remember password. This bug seems to be unrelated

    So then I tried native runtime STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam with the help of the alucryd-multilib repo. The output seems to be identical to the above. Output of DEBUGGER=gdb STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam available here.
    Throwing that into Google yields nothing of interest that I can find.
    Perhaps hardware failure? But my nephew played Dust AET for a while and it ran fine.
    I'm at a loss.

    I'm also in a similar situation, surprised that it took this long for someone to post the problem here (it's been at least a week since this started)...
    There's a report here:
    https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam- … -67916730\
    I also get a segfault when running steam with STEAM_RUNTIME disabled now.
    Here's my command line output: https://gist.github.com/uberscientist/0 … 26de094ec5
    With STEAM_RUNTIME libs it runs fine (however TF2 fails to start...)
    If I can provide any more useful information let me know. I am running Arch Linux, systemd (so OpenRC probably has nothing to do with it), x86_64.
    I'll subscribe to this topic and continue crossing my fingers an update fixes things.

  • In FF29.0 bookmarks on the menu bar stop working correctly after exiting 'Customize': has anyone else noticed this?

    Shortly after installing FF29.0 I noticed that the bookmarks menu from the 'Menu Bar' - NOT the new one that appears on the right of the screen - was not working correctly: specifically, when right-clicking on a bookmark to look for 'Open in a New tab' all the options were greyed out and I now realize that this occurs after exiting the 'Customize' screen, which effect I have consistently duplicated several times now; to restore functionality I have on each occasion had to close and re-open Firefox. This error does not appear to occur with the new bookmark menu that is associated with the bookmark icon at the top right of the screen. Has anyone else noticed this error?
    (Personally, I prefer the bookmark menu from the menu bar, which incidentally I find easier to read than the new one and I like menu bars anyway.)
    Many thanks.

  • Firefox doesn't start after exiting

    Each time I exit firefox normaly or it crashes, FF doesn't start again. Firefox appears for 1 or 2 seconds in active processes and dessappears without any error messages. Computer restart doesn't solve this. Only reinstalling FF makes it start again, but only for one time. If I exit FF it won't start untill next reinstallation.

    After exiting and launching FF for second time firefox.exe appears for 1 or 2 seconds in active processes in TM and dissapears. No errors shown.

  • Firefox mobile won't shut down after exit

    Android RAZR v2.3.6
    After exiting Firefox, the app stays running in the background and eats my battery. Killed it yesterday in just 4 hours. My phone runs hot while firefox is running and after exiting Firefox.
    Doing a complete power off and back on doesn't work, Firefox starts back up and it is in my running apps again. It won't accept a force shut down either.
    Yesterday I couldn't get Firefox to shut down until I plugged the phone back into the charger. Then it finally went away on the running apps list.

    Not exiting when it goes to the background is normal and expected behavior for an Android application, but using all your CPU and ending up eating your battery sounds like a potential bug.
    We released a significantly updated version of Firefox for Android today, so the first thing to try is probably updating to that. If the problem persist, please report a bug in Bugzilla. We'll really need to know at least the version you're using, though.

  • After exiting proxifier software while web pages are still open in firefox, I could not open any web pages unless firefox is restarted. Plz help me.

    I have a problem with Firefox when using Proxifier software. When proxifier is runing and I'm browsing web pages with firefox all things is OK. But after exiting proxifier while web pages are still open in firefox, I encounter a problem. In spite of the internet is still connected but my firefox could not open any web pages unless firefox is restarted.
    You are kindly requested help me how to solve this problem not to restart firefox.

    Hi,
    [http://proxifier.com/ Proxifier] seems to be a transparent proxy. So you could try setting '''No proxy''' in Firefox '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/advanced-settings-browsing-network-updates-encryption Advanced] > '''Network''' > '''Settings'''.
    PS: A quick way to restart Firefox is to press [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/GCLI '''Shift''' + '''F2'''], type '''restart''', and hit '''Enter'''.

    Currently it clears the search---While returing from page AM Return status should be True in pageContext.setForwardURL.:::
    pageContext.setForwardURL("OA.jsp?page=/XXX/oracle/apps/po/msg/webui/SearchPG",
    "SUPP_SEARCH",

    null,
    null,
    true, // Retain AM
    OAWebBeanConstants.ADD_BREAD_CRUMB_NO,
    OAWebBeanConstants.IGNORE_MESSAGES);
    ---After setting AM Status to true u can able to c the values.

  • [solved] I hear audio 1s after playback starts - ALSA & ALC888 S/PDIF

    Hello,
    I run 64bit Arch Linux, my soundcard is a Realtek ALC888 (HDA ATI SB according to alsamixer) and I use ALSA (alsa-lib 1.0.21.a-1).
    The back of my computer looks like this:
    I have a YAMAHA RX-V596RDS AV Receiver connected to my sound output via a TOSLINK (S/PDIF or Optical Cable) connector.
    My alsamixer looks like this (edited to fit small screen):
    I used aadebug to get some info about my setup: output
    I have two problems with my setup:
    1. Whenever I start playback - be it mpd, mplayer, vlc, flash in ff, aqualung or audacity - the playback will start instantly, but I will only start hearing the output when one second has passed. (So I won't hear the first second at all.)
    This also happens when I use the RCA Jack to connect my AV Receiver.
    However, if I unmute "Front" and increase volume for it in alsamixer and connect my headphones to the light green (stereo) jack output (on top left in photo above) and tell audacity to use hw:0,0 ("ALSA: HDA ATI SB: ALC888 Analog") as output, I will hear the sound in my headphones *instantly* when playback starts.
    When I 'mpd next' the same delay of ~1 second will happen. However I noticed that if I pause audio playback sweep (audio editor) and very quickly continue playback, there will be no gap and no 'loss of audio'.
    I suspect, that dmix goes into a stand-by state, whenever audio stops. Can I force dmix to have a longer timout or none at all?
    2. I can't get Audacity to playback audio together with other applications. mpd and mplayer and flash in ff and vlc will play audio at the same time, but audacity won't. If I start audacity while mpd is playing, there won't even be the option to select "hw:0,1", "iec958", "spdif" or "default". If I use any other device (like dmix), it will play using analog (I can hear it in my headphone).
    If I start audacity, then start mpd and then try to playback in audacity (using any of the devices "hw:0,1", "iec958", "spdif" or "default"), I get following error message repeatedly:
    Expression 'ret' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 1027
    Expression 'AlsaOpen( hostApi, parameters, streamDir, &pcm )' failed in 'src/hostapi/alsa/pa_linux_alsa.c', line: 1059
    Any one having these problems? Anyone having ideas what the reasons might be?
    Thanks

    I don't know if this will help but i used to have a similar problem when i switched to musicmanager as my default music player, (i also have the same soundcard)
    When connected to my receiver via optical out there would be a initial delay of around a second everytime when playing a new song, although there was no delay through my laptop speakers.
    What worked for me was adding esd to my daemons array

  • Tap to click setting in system preferences not persisting after reboot!

    Hi,
    This is the 2nd time this has happened.. I shut down my system, and boot it up later, and when I go to tap, nothing happens. I go into to system prefs > trackpad, and see that my tap to click & dragging options are unchecked......
    Why is it not remembering those settings?
    -patrick

    I also have this behavior. It seems all trackpad preferences fail to persist after reboot and logout/login. I also disable Pinch Open & Close and Rotate settings and those also revert.

  • Re-Query After Exiting

    Hello,
    I have a form formA where I select an item from the form and based on the item it navigates to another form called formB, corresponding to the item. I make changes in formB and does commit. After commit and it comes back to formA.
    I need to re-query after making changes in formB and it should reflect in formA after exiting.
    Which function I should use to achieve this functionality?

    Hi!
    If you use the call_form build-in to call formB, you can query your block in formA
    direct after calling the formB like:
    declare l_cur_record pls_integer := :system.cursor_record;
    begin
    call_form ( 'formB', hide, no_replace ... );
    go_block ( 'your_block' );
    execute_query;
    go_record ( l_cur_record );
    end;if you use the open_form build-in to call formB, you have to use
    a when-window-actived trigger in formA like:
    declare l_cur_record pls_integer := :system.cursor_record;
    begin
    go_block ( 'your_block' );
    execute_query;
    go_record ( l_cur_record );
    end;Regards
