[SOLVED] Partition "outside of disk"

I got a new hard drive, with the intention of having an Arch Linux/Windows 7 dualboot. Somewhere along the line when I made all the partitions before installing anything, I screwed up the partition table, and now when I try to use cfdisk or parted it says "Can't have partition outside the disk!" GParted gives me the same problem. I've only installed Windows 7, and it boots fine, but I can't make any new partitions because of this stupid error.
I really don't give a damn about any of the data outside of the Windows partition at the moment, which only takes up the first 197 GB of the 1 TB disk. Is there a way to just clear out these other partitions giving me trouble? Can I dd zero it or will that make things worse?
EDIT: (solution) I fixed the problem by using fdisk instead of cfdisk or parted/gparted. In fdisk, I deleted the problematic partitions, then wrote a new partition table to the disk. I accomplished this by using d and w commands in fdisk. If you are reading this and would like to rescue the partitions while keeping this data instead, refer to http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p … 38943.html

delete the non windows partitions before trying to make new partition, you most likely have used all disk space already.
Then make new linux partitions from unsigned space

  • [SOLVED] Grub Error "Read or write outside of disk hd0"

Trying to install Arch Linux (as per client request) on an old Seagate Mirra Personal Server. I reflashed the bios to get rid of the Seagate modified ROM and put the standard, stock, VIA bios image on there. Everything boots fine, it boots windows fine. But when I install Arch Linux on the drive and try to boot, it errors out with
    Booting...
    GRUB Loading.
    Welcome to GRUB!
error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.
    Entering rescue mode...
    grub rescue>
When I ran grub-install and grub-mkconfig during installation neither reported errors or warnings. I'm open to ideas but I need to fix this sooner rather later as this is for a client. A forum thread I found in regards to Ubuntu and grub error 18 said to run:
    apt-get remove linux-server
    apt-get install linux-386
under Ubuntu and then it would boot. I know Arch removed i386 support a few months ago but im finding it hard to believe that the error above is because of an architecture mismatch. Also I didnt think the CPU in this thing was that old. Hardware Info from the arch live cd says
    CPU Vendor: Centaur
    CPU Model: VIA Nehemiah
    1 core, 64k L2 Cache, 32bit
the Mirra is from 2007 or so, so I expected i686 Arch to be just fine for it.
    Ideas???
    EDIT:
    Wikipedia's Article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIA_C3
States: "Additionally, it implemented the cmov instruction, making it a 686-class processor"
So it shouldn't be an issue of i386 vs i686, right?

Good morning to all of You.
Sorry for posting in a [SOLVED] thread but I find the info that I am about to add relevant and I am betting my vital organs that someone else might find it interesting too.
I did an upgrade last night on my Thinkpad 600E. I was not upgrading it for several days (2 weeks tops) as I lost my USB wifi card and had no internet access on this particular machine. So...
As always before upgrade I checked my rss reader for news and sure enough there was a very informative post from Allan (thanks Dude btw.) in there:
    https://www.archlinux.org/news/binaries … ervention/
I did as I was told and upgraded in the indicated way. All was peachy till I rebooted to get new kernel to load. I was met with the mentioned error:
error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'.
but the second part was slightly different.
Error: You need to load kernel first
SO since the error was different why am I posting here? Because even after Googling the whole error message this post was the first to come up in my search results so I am betting others will get here as well.
Solution? After an hour or so of fighting (I tried booting up from the Arch CD and fscking partitions, reinstalling / reconfiguring grub, downgrading grub-bios and grub-common packages and many many other things) I finally rebooted to the Arch cd, chrooted (for all those that do not know what that means I would like to recommend this link as chrooting is explained in it https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … %27_Guide) to the installation and I have reinstalled the linux (kernel) package and redid the image with the:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and rebooted. Turns out that did the trick. Apparently something went wrong during the kernel upgrade. Possibly due to the changes explained in Allan's article. Reinstalling kernel / recreating image did the trick for me.
So if You are still wondering what am I doing here and why am I replying in this thread - the answer is - 99% search results from Google suggests that this error means incompatibility between bios and the hard drive AND there is nothing really out there that I found helpful in this case. I mean it could not be a bios / hdd incompatibility. This drive has been used in this machine for few years and it was running Arch since November 2012... so this just could not be the case. I am just giving a shout to all those that will get this error that there is another option too.
Kind regards. Thanks for reading. My apologies again for sticking my nose in.
    Andrzej
Edit: Few months later the same error - fix does not work... Trying to figure it out...

    Hello Everyone,
I have a MacBook older model with me.I am running 10.7.6 on that, I was trying to use BootCamp to install windows on my mac. Since BootCamp can only work on a single Volume, I partitioned my Hard Disk to one volume.
Using BootCamp I installed windows and everything worked fine. After installing windows and testing everything, I switched back to OS X and this time I tried to make another partition on my single portioned Mac volume and named it Backup. That too worked. Now I have three Volumes
    1)Development2)Backup3)BootCamp.
Next when I switched to Windows, It should the classic error, No Bootable device found, please insert a Bootable CD and press any key. When I tried to enter my Mac OS X install DVD and by pressing option key, it does not show me the proper Mac OS X development volume. It keeps going back to the No bootable device found message.
Any help will be much appreciated
    Regards
    Mithun

you can't add a partition in between - you put Windows to a new partition number.
    GPT (GUID)
    EFI
    Mac HFS
    Lion Recovery
    Windows
And now you have two HFS
One partition and one Windows (plus Lion Recovery).
If you were to have more, it can't be before Windows for one thing.

  • Partition in hard disk

i'm new in using mac book pro..
i'm wondering,, do i have to do partition in my hard disk? like when using windows?
    thx be4

Some users of the Intel-based Mac computers had used the BootCamp utility to
partition a hard disk drive - if suitable free space in one large section existed -
in the computer. Since Boot Camp has (or had) the ability to do this, when the
partition was no longer desired, some of those same users had to use BootCamp
to remove the partition. Another option was to use Disk Utility to make partitions
on a new or wiped hard disk drive, and install whatever on those partitions.
And there is also some other means, where you can partition a drive that already
has a working OS on a section of the drive, without damaging the existing content.
Since I don't do that, I am at a loss in regard to more detailed information. My
external drives have partitions and some of them contain bootable clone content.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Swap Partitioning and multiple disks

Ok so I have been setting up a workstation with Arch Linux that has a total of 16GB of RAM and, because it will run very memory intensive applications we actually require a large swap partition. Because this may eventually get upgraded to even more RAM we decided to go with a 50 GB swap partition.
I also have two drives in the machine, the primary 500GB HDD and a smaller 250 GB HDD that we wanted to use for a /backup partition as well as swap space and so I set up the disks as follows:
    sda (500 GB):
    /    (30 GB Primary Partition)
    /home (435 GB Primary Partition)
    /usr/local  (2 GB Primary Partition)
    sdb (250 GB)
    50 GB Primary swap partition
    /backup (~200 GB Primary Partition)
Now when I am in gparted or cfdisk that is how these partitions show up. If I do a df I see
sda1, sda2, sda3, and sdb2 but instead of seeing what woul;d be sdb1 as a large swap I see an 8 GB swap listed as being mounted on /dev/shm (which I think is normal).
    After reading this:
    http://lissot.net/partition/partition-04.html
I think the problem is that I don't have a swap partition set on my 500 GB drive. It seems like any bootable drive needs a swap partition on it. Although my system boots fine and I haven't had any problems running it yet I do need to get this swap partition straightened out otherwise the machine will have issues when it is fully operational and running heavy jobs.
IS this the problem? And if so would the best way to fix it be to use parted to shrink my /home partition by a few GB and make a small swap partition on that drive at the end of the drive space? Right now it is laid out as:
    |---------------- / ----------------| |---- /usr/local ----| |------------------------------------------ /home ------------------------------------------|
    Suggestions, ideas?
    Thanks

The output from free -m is:
    <code>
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:         16018      15372        645          0         91      14600
    -/+ buffers/cache:        679      15338
    Swap:        47685          0      47685
    </code>
For comparison here is the output from my laptop (also Arch Linux):
    <code>
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:          2025        614       1411          0         12        232
    -/+ buffers/cache:        370       1655
    Swap:         1019          0       1019
    </code>
It has an ~ 1GB swap partition but it's df also shows something at /dev/shm:
    <code>
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda1              12G  7.6G  3.4G  70% /
    none                 1013M     0 1013M   0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda3              78G   28G   47G  37% /data
    </code>
In gparted on my laptop /dev/sda2 is the swap partition with size: 1019 MB
Going by free -m on the workstation it looks like it is seeing the ~50 GB swap partition and it is mounted in /etc/fstab so perhaps I have nothing to worry about? Is it actually necessary that your bootable disk has a swap partition on it? Both disks (sda and sdb) actually have at least one partition flagged as bootable but sda (which has / and /home on it) didn't have a swap partition on that disk.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • Windows could not set a partition active on disk 0. error 0X80300024

I followed the "Step-by-Step: Basic Windows Deployment" Link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28v=ws.10%29.aspx
after creating aotounattend.xml file, I went to step2: building reference installation. however, recieving the below error message:
"windows could not set a partition active on disk 0. The target disk, partition, or volume does not support the specified operation. The error occurred while applying the unattend asnwer file's <DiskConfiguration> setting. Error code: 0X80300024"
it happened in the beginning of installation.
what's more, before that error, system still asked me to choose which languange in the installation and I also need to click install button to begin installation.
I believe that with answer file, windows 7 should start installation automatically. Am I right?

-> you can see that disks 0, 1 and 2 are configured in diskconfiguration section.
After constructing new COEM with this answer file, when i boot the system via DVD disk, in some point in time, i get the following exception:

  • Partitioning 1TB with Disk Utility

I have 1TB external drive which I want to partition, but I have some questions regarding format, size, compatibility with both Snow Leopard and Windows (eugh, but necessary). Can someone help me out? I have a few gaps.
    _*Main Questions*_
    _*Partition A: for TimeMachine*_
Format: Should it be Mac OS Extended Journaled...? is that right?
    _*Partition B: for Bootcamp*_
Format: I don't know. Should it be FAT? or Mac OS Extended?
Size: I don't know? Can someone recommend?
_*Partition C: Everything else (Media etc)*_
Format: I don't know? I need this to be compatible with 10.6 and Windows.
    _*Other questions*_
    a) Do I need to Erase first, re format, then create partition?
    b) What is RAID?
    c) Do I need to change something in Options? There's Master Boot - GUID - Apple Partition Map,
    What do I choose?
    Help.

    Yes

I would make a bootable clone of my internal disk volume on partition B. The clone will provide a fail safe mechanism for disaster recovery. If you decide to do so, then the partition should be GUID.
As far as I know, you cannot run Windows from an external drive even if using Boot Camp. I would put Boot Camp/Windows on a partition of your internal drive. When you want to set up you Boot Camp partition, just follow the instructions of the Boot Camp Assistant. Do not format FAT under any conditions. You want to use NTFS.
_*Partition C: Everything else (Media etc)*_
Format: I don't know? I need this to be compatible with 10.6 and Windows.
I would not go this route. You do not want to use FAT. The best approach is to install MacDrive (mediafour.com) on you Windows system. If you do so then the 3rd partition can be Mac OS X extended (journaled), and both you Windows and OS X machines will be able to read and write the partition.
    _*Other questions*_
    a) Do I need to Erase first, re format, then create partition?
Using Disk Utility, create 1 partition with partition table GUID. After doing so, your partition should be formatted Mac OS X extended (journaled). If it isn't, then format (i.e., erase) it this way. Change your partition to 3 GUID. Selecting the sizes you want.
    b) What is RAID?
    Of no importance to you
    c) Do I need to change something in Options? There's Master Boot - GUID - Apple Partition Map,
    What do I choose?

  • Cant partition external FW disk

    a. launch DU
    b. see that my 240Gb ext disk is already partitioned into three volumes.
    c. wish to further split 3rd volume into 3 more volumes of around 20Gb each
    d. launch Help from DU
    e. search on partition
    f. see that at step 3 of the suggested solution "Partitioning a startup disk into several volumes" - mentions that I should be able to "click partition"
    g. see that there is no button or menu to do this...
am I missing something ? btw the Help stuff mentions "partitioning a non-startup disk" as well, and the instructions dont significantly deviate from what Ive already stated....

never mind figured it out. Wrote too soon ! Have to click on the correct icon within DU. Duh.
    - Still cant split the 3rd partition without erasing the whole disk, but I have Disk Studio from Macromat.

  • Partition a startup disk

How do I partition a startup disk? Disk utility does not display a partition option.

Just open disk Utility and grab the bottom right hand corner of the partition layout area and drag it up to create free space below and the startup disk size you want.
    Then click the Apply button.
After that finishes click the Plus sign and that now free space will be another partition. Set name and format and click Apply again.
This will not erase or damage the startup volume.

  • Damaged partition on USB disk. Please help me reconstruct it.

    Hello,
I have a Seagate 2TB USB 3.0 disk that suddenly has stopped working under Mac OS X Mavericks. The system won't recognise it. The funny thing is that if I attach the disk to my QNAP NAS, the disk is seen just fine by the OS. I've read multiple websites with similar experiences; it seems to me as if the Mac OS X isn't as permisive as linux OS... and boy, is that annoying
I came across this article: http://perrohunter.com/repair-a-mac-os-x-hfs-partition-table/#comment-4644 . I must say that I got my hopes high when I started reading the post, because I felt it described my very same situation. Unfortunatelly, when I got to step #8, Mavericks would complain about the resource being busy, thus getting me stuck in there
When the disk is hooked up on my NAS, I can see the data just fine. I just want to be able to mount the disk one last time under OS X in order to transfer all the Time Machine backups I have there...

Yeah I'm not sure the problem is partition related at all. It might be file system corruption that OS X's fsck sees but can't fix, while it goes unnoticed on the NAS. But then this message is confusing:

When it's connected, what result do you get for 'diskutil list' is the drive in question listed? And if so what do you get for 'diskutil verifydisk /dev/diskX'? Use diskX not diskXsY.
diskutil list displays the disk and partition just fine:

The disk in quesiton is the one in red. The rest of disks and partitions are system disks (Fusion Drive); they are not relevant.
The result I get when I attempt to verify the disk is rather annoying given that I pretty much had assumed it did not contain any GPT scheme:

  • Partitioning The Hard Disk

I wanted to how to partition the hard disk so I can have three partitions, i.e One for the Mac OS X 10.6 and applications, and one for the User files i.e all documents, downloads, music etc, and one for the bootcamp partition, I know how to partition, i wanted to how to move the user directory permanently into the second partition, this way if I ever have to reinstall the OS I dont have to back up my data, all the time.
Actually I also would like suggestions on whether this is a Good or Bad Idea, Performance wise?, and also whether this is possible?

Do you mean uninstalling software? If so see the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term. Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default. You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead. Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.

I have an old G3 I would like to donate, but I have forgotten my admin password and cannot erase the two partitions on my disk. I have the CD for 10.3.9 that one partition is running but when I boot from the CD, it wants to set up by connecting to the internet and I cannot connect on the old machine.
I've tried several schemes by logging in with command s and carefully typing directions, but when I reboot it just gives me the old admin.
It keeps trying to connect to network which I do not want to do.
I guess no one really wants an old G3 but I used it for years and I hate to destroy it.

    Sure you can.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
No password is required for this unless you set up a firmware password.

  • [SOLVED] Partition ends after end-of-disk

When setting up my netbook for a new Arch Linux install, I decided to move my Windows partition from the middle of the hard drive to the end of it to make more room for my extended partition.  I tried to do this with GParted using a Ubuntu live USB.  Something seems to have gone wrong somewhere.
    $ cfdisk /dev/sda
FATAL ERROR: Bad logical partition 5: Partition ends after end-of-disk
Press any key to exit cfdisk
GParted also throws up errors with that disk.

Partition table entries are not in disk order
The partition isn't mission critical (there's no data I need on it), but it would save me a lot of time if I can save the partition instead of having to recreate a Windows install.  Any ideas as to what I can do?

You're totally right.  I thought that the partitions physically existed on the disk in the order that they were labeled numerically, but this isn't the case.  I realized that they were actually sitting in a different order after seeing your comment and trying
    $ parted -l
Error: Invalid partition table on /dev/sda -- wrong signature 3f93.

    3 98.7MB 126GB 126GB extended
    2 145GB 160GB 14.8GB primary ntfs boot
Of course, after I saw this, I took a closer look at the numbers in the fdisk -l output, and realized how funky things were.
You were right, everything was solved by deleting /dev/sda3.  Thank you so much for your help, TryA!
If it helps anybody in the future with this problem, I did this with fdisk.
    # fdisk /dev/sda
    Command: d
    Partition number (1-4): 3
    Command: w
It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that I needed to write the change after selecting which partition to delete.  =P

  • [SOLVED]trying to mount disk so all users can read write

I'm trying to mount my hard drive to /mnt/2TB automatically at startup.  My /etc/fstab looks like this...
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/2TB ntfs auto,exec,rw,users,uid=1000 0 0
    ls / shows...
    drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 4096 Jun 30 20:09 mnt
    ls /mnt shows...
    drwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4096 Jun 20 21:21 2TB
When I restart the disk mounts fine but I cannot write anything to disk.  I want to mount this disk so that anyone can read, write, and execute on it.  I specified these options in my fstab.  What options am I missing?
    EDIT:
I figured it out.  I had to install ntfs-3g.  Once I did that I changed my fstab to this...
    /dev/sda2 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /mnt/2TB ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000 0 0
    Then I changed /mnt permissions to ...
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jun 30 20:09 mnt
Then I changed /mnt/2TB permissions to...
    drwxrwxrwx 1 necbot users 4096 Jun 20 21:21 2TB
    Works great!

I ran across this in the ntfs-3g manual which might be of some interest. It appears that adding "permissions" to the mount options for ntfs-3g might accomplish roughly what you want, but you may have to perform some work to get it operational. Likewise, the Windows ACL may interfere and a quick glance seems to me to suggest that you might have to tweak things from Windows to get the permissions working well.
I personally have all of my Windows partitions mounted under /windows, but I can see why that isn't an ideal solution if you're dabbling in Arch or have things you want to more easily share in one direction.
Hope this helps somewhat even though you've already marked the topic as solved.
