[SOLVED] PCMCIA CF card is not available on boot

Hi,
I'm newbie here and have one big problem with Arch
I have big (16 gb) CF card and CF->PCMCIA adapter.
But here is a problem - card has not been detected on boot until I reinsert it after boot is finished.
Can anybody advice me how to fix it?
Archlinux is freshly updated with latest packages and kernel.

Add ide-cs to MODULES in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild the image with mkinitcpio -p kernel26,

  • [Solved] Alsa Sound Card Numbering Not Persistant Between Boots

    Hello,
I'm having trouble with alsa and my multiple sound cards. Sometimes when I boot, I get the following output from "aplay -l"
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC889A Analog [ALC889A Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC889A Digital [ALC889A Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 2: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
However, I also see this after other boots:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC889A Analog [ALC889A Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: ALC889A Digital [ALC889A Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 2: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Because the card numbering is not consistant, I'm having a great deal of trouble (if the card is 0, then I don't need an asoundrc, but if it's 1, I do). It also breaks my volume panel applet for the alsa card number to often change (volumeicon - from the AUR). Is there a way to force a certain device to always be card number 0?
    Thanks for any help.

Thank you for your response, karol.
I ran 'udevadm info -a -p /sys/class/sound/card1/' as was able to get the following information:

I'm completely new to writing udev rules; would the proper procedure be to write something like this:
    DEVPATH=="/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.2/sound/card*" ATTRS{number}="0"
or will that happen too late in the boot process (after the card has already been assigned a number)?
Perhaps it would be easier to work through alsa itself? I know I can get sound consistantly by calling out the card in asoundrc:
    pcm.!default { type hw card SB }
    ctl.!default { type hw card SB }
But this seems to disable dmix (software mixing). Is there a way to re-enable dmix from the asoundrc (and would that be easier than trying to work in udev)?

Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected - YES
    SAVE
I have application free pace 8.1 MB

The card is there and is seen by my BB Storm. Media > Explore
I have removed and reinstalled the card.
On the desktop I have tried Explore as well as Disk Management and nothing shows up for the Media Card although the Blackberry itself is present.

  • [SOLVED] PCMCIA wireless card not recognized

Hi, in reading other forums i have seen several others with similar problems to mine but never a solution, so my question is: is there a way to manually change pcmcia_cs or card firmware to make my existing card work (rather than buying an 802.11b card with prism chipset or similar)?
Card is a Buffalo 802.11g/b wireless pcmcia card (broadcom chipset - notoriously bad with linux).  I am willing to buy the linuxant ndiswrapper to load the windows driver.  However the card is not even recognized by the kernel.
lspci shows a broadcom device present
cardctl ident lists no devices in either pcmcia port
power indicator led on card remains off in linux (card functions well in windows XP)  Neither PCLinuxOS live cd nor Knoppix live cd were able to detect presence of card either.
So, although i can install the windows driver for the card, the driver is not linked to any pcmcia device because the system is not aware of its existance.
Again, is there anyway to change pcmcia_cs or update firmware to allow linux to see that this card exists?
    thanks

Ok, here is all the info I can think to give.  I really appreciate all of your help.

It just occurred to me after previewing my post that I unintentionally updated my kernel the other day.  I'll try to revert to the original 2.6.10 kernel, but i doubt this will fix the pcmcia problem. (though, it will allow me to use phrakture's ndiswrapper pkg.)

  • Wifi Not Working!!! AMD Graphic Card Drivers Not Available as well!!

Hello Everyone, I bought this HP 15-ac025TX (M9V00PA) Notebook laptop and I am having the same problem that others on this forum with this notebook are having i.e. wifi is not working/available and AMD/Intel Switchable High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver is not available for download. I saw one solved post regarding this problem but the guy had Windows 7 32 bit and also I couldn't understand much that was discussed in that post. Here is the link to that post: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Wireless-Internet-Home-Networking/Network-controller-amp-USB-controller-driver-not-found-and/td-p/5177717 And yes, I have downloaded all the available drivers on the hp site. Help Needed!!

Hi: These wifi and BT drivers should work... Wifi: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71528.exe Bluetooth: This package contains the Broadcom bluetooth driver and software for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. Broadcom Bluetooth 4.0 Driver is required to enable Broadcom bluetooth 4.0 devices and is compatible with Broadcom bluetooth 3.0 and earlier versions. File name: sp71440.exe I reported the graphics driver problem to HP a couple of weeks ago.  I hope they get that sorted out soon!

  • Satellite P100: Why the Nvidia 7900 graphic card is not available in UK?

Why is the nvidia 7900 gpu not available in the p100 in UK? In mainland Europe & Middle East the 7900gs is available. The 7900 gtx in the states is available.
    Why?

    Hi
I dont believe that its not possible to buy a P100 with the Nvidia 7900 graphic card in UK. If you cannot purchase it form the notebook dealer in your city so I would say check the notebook online shops.
I have investigated a little bi and found these P100 units with the nVidia 7900 graphic card.
    Satellite P100-426; P100-194; P100-191; P100-196; P100-215; P100-222
I have found three different graphic cards which were delivered with the P100:
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900; GeForce Go 7600 and Intel 945GM Express
Anyway, the P100 is a new notebook and possibly you cannot buy it in every shop but in my opinion in several times this unit should be available in the UK with the GeForce Go 7900

  • [SOLVED] locale-gen, nano, sed not available in arch-chroot

Both the Installation Guide and the Beginner's version say to use arch-chroot before configuring. However, when I try to do this, I no longer have access to the commands I need to do the configuration (e.g. sh: nano: command not found). I can use nano from outside of the chroot, but AFAIK locale-gen needs to be run inside, and it relies on sed which is also not present.
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up before-- have I done something wrong?
EDIT: mkinitcpio is also not available while in arch-chroot

Whef wrote:Did you use pacstrap to install the base system (and anything else you want) on your install (usually /mnt) before chrooting? Otherwise, it won't be able to access the resources from the regular install media because it will be outside of the chroot environment.
Hmmm no I did not do this, nor did I see any mention of it on the install guide. It just says to arch-chroot then (after editing a few files) run locale-gen and mkinitcpio, neither of which are accessible within the chroot'd shell.

  • Time Machine external USB drive not available at boot

I have a late 2012 iMac running Mavericks 10.4.9. I use Time Machine with a Toshiba 3TB external drive.  The Toshiba drive is usually left powered up.  Every time I boot the iMac and try to force a backup, Time Machine reports the Toshiba disk is not available.  When I open Time Machine preferences, the Toshiba drive does not show until I power-cycle it and re-select it.   Also occasionally it reports that I did not eject it properly.  But it NEVER shows in Devices or on my desk top (like a thumb-drive does for example) so I wouldn't know how to eject it anyway.
Any ideas on where I am going wrong?
    Thanks!

I also have a MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have a new 500GB Lacie d2 safe external drive that my computer recognizes but Time machine does not. Formating the disk in journaled Mac OS Extended format does not solve the problem. Lacie says they are working on it. Anyone have any ideas?

  • 15454 OC3 card STS3 not available any ideas

Hello, we have a older 15454 network with OC
3 ring between the nodes.  My issue is we are trying to provision an ethernet circuit between two nodes on STS3 and its not working.
We are able to provision the circuit on each end and it shows green but no traffic passes.  After doing some investigation comparing it to other nodes that we are using STS3 on I found that on the OC3 card on the SONET STS Tab there are only STS1 and STS2 available.  sts3 does not show up on the tab.
There does not appear to be any way in the GUI to configure sts3.  I contacted the telcos that are providing the OC3 circuit and they stated it is configured and in alarm as if there is no signal from my endpoints.
Is there something in the CLI interface I need to do to activate STS3?
    Thanks
    ~ Phil

The SONET STS tab doesn't have anything to do with adding a circuit. That tab will show up once you are finally able to create an STS1 circuit in the third timeslot.
When you go to build the circuit, STS#3 is not an option correct? If there are no circuits shown in the Circuits tab for that STS#3 (VT or STS circuit), it's possible you have stranded bandwidth on that sts. In order to check for that you will need to retrieve the cross connects from TL1.
To login, telnet to the ip address of the node using port 3083. 'telnet 10.10.10.10 3083'
act-user::CISCO15:123::otbu+1;           CISCO15 for the username, otbu+1 for the password. Use a superuser account.
    To retrieve all cross connects:
    rtrv-crs::all:123;
Look through the output to see if there is a cross-connect built on that particular STS number. If there is a cross connect, it will need to be deleted. For example, let's say that I need to delete this cross connect:
    "VT1-12-1-5-1-1,VT1-6-1-4-1-1:2WAY,VT1:CKTID=\"test_0009\":OOS-AU,AINS&FLT"
The command to delete this connection would be:
    dlt-crs-vt1::vt1-12-1-5-1-1,vt1-6-1-4-1-1:123;

  • PCMCIA Wlan card is not detected: Error 1058: service cannot be started

    PLEASE HELP!
I am running WXP Pro for over 2 years and I have been connecting to the internet via a wireless pc card in my laptops PCMCIA slot with no problems. Suddenly last week it started to randomly disconnect and reconnect, and now it has gone off completely.
I bought a new WiFi card and still didn't work. I have checked the device manager and the PCMCIA cardbus driver is working fine as is every other device. The wireless card driver and some other network related drivers fail to start no matter what I try and how many times I try. I have tried another laptop and both my old card and the new one work fine.
All the device driver that I try to start have the error
"Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
The card driver is installed, just not starting, it's like the laptop cannot detect or see the card in the slot
Please help; I am having trouble finding anyone with the same problem after a week of searching the web.

    Hi
This behavior can occur if the service is disabled or if the service is disabled for the hardware profile that you are currently using.
To enable the service do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Double-click the service that did not start.
    3. Click the Log On tab.
    4. Verify that the service has not been disabled for the hardware profile that you are using. If it has, click Enable.
    5. Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start the computer.

  • [solved] Encrypted root partition decrypts, not recognised on boot

    Hello everyone
As per the wiki entry on system encryption with LUKS, I have an unencrypted boot partition (sda1) and a second encrypted partition (sda2) containing everything else, including root. This is on an eeepc 901 (I'm posting here, though, as I understand this as a mounting issue rather than laptop/netbook specific).
I have just done a full system upgrade, including moving to kernel 2.6.34-ARCH. Now, although I am prompted for the passphrase, which is accepted. I subsequently see the following:
::Checking Filesystems [BUSY] fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/mapper/root
    /dev/mapper/root:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem.
If the device is valid and it really does contain an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or
ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running
    e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
Runnig ecfsck -b 8193 /dev/mapper/root simply results in that error message being repeated. Googling and searching the forum only really found this thread to be anything similar. As per the suggestions there, the encrypted partition is last in /etc/fstab and the <options> value is populated:
    /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1 vfat rw #This is an sdhc card permanently inserted
    /dev/mapper/root / ext2 defaults 0 1
/etc/crypttab is entirely commented out, as it advises the root partition needs to be defined in the initramfs.
I can decrypt and open the partition using systemrescuecd, and fsck confirms the partition is clean. Equally, I can access the decrypted partition from the maintenance shell I get dumped into.
I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.
Last edited by Sagittar (2010-07-17 03:40:49)

Thanks for responding. I can confirm /dev/sda2 is ext2: after mounting both partitions with the -r flag, df -T reports ext2 file systems. (The theory is that ext2 helps prolong the life of the SSD in the eee pc. Not that that's entirely relevant here.)
I can't see a way of booting off sysresccd with root=/dev/sda2 without decrypting /dev/sda2 first. I am able to do that from Grub. Is there something I'm missing?
However, when I pay more attention to what happens on sysresccd when I decrypt the partition, I get the following:
    % cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda2 root
    Enter passphrase for /dev/sda2:
device-mapper: remove ioctl failed: Device or resource busy
    Key slot 0 unlocked.
So, although I can then mount /dev/sda2 (or, to be precise, /dev/mapper/root) as normal, my guess is that the third line is a big clue as to why my normal boot process fails. I am pursuing that now.

    Hey everyone,
I'm running windows xp sp3 on my MBP17" just purely as a gaming side of things.

I went to the audio setup in control panel and it only shows Realtek HD Audio input and Realtek HD digital input for the voice recording options.
Neither seem to be getting an audio signal when I talk.
Any ideas what I can do to get this working or am I out of luck?
The mic works fine in OS X. I have the latest bootcamp drivers and I'm running windows XP SP3 with the latest updates. The iSight camera works fine as a video device but no audio.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

never mind...fixed it myself by going into the realtek hd sound effects thing
    thanks though

  • Urgent!!!!!! Mac os  and recovery option not available in boot option

    Hello all,
I installed windows 8 pro in my Mac using boot camp. It worked fine. I made my boot priority to windows. Then one day I shrinked my windows partition drive to another drive. Then I extended back to normal. But when I restated my pc, it won't load to windows. And when I press the option key, only "windows"partition appear. No "Mac os " no "recovery" only "windows" option. I tried to open terminal using command+s but no luck how can I boot to Mac?
Waiting for it to be solved..
    Thanks

You can't do that, Re-Partition the drive, Shrink/Expand, or anything after you install Windows. you have FUBARed the complete system.
You'll need to boot to the Online Internet Recovery system. At startup hold down the Command+r keys until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen, have the system WIRED to your internet Router, Ethernet cable.
If the Command+r keys don't work try Command+Option/Alt+r keys. Again hold them down until you see a spinning globe in the center of the screen.
Form that you will need to Re-Partition the drive as ONE (1) Partition and then reinstall Mac OS X. Once that is done then you will need to Reinstall Windows and then all your programs for both OSs and hopefully you have a backup of all your data files.'
Good Luck and Best Wishes. Happy Holiday and Happy Festivus for the rest of us.

  • [SOLVED (mysteriously)] Arch on USB not recognized during boot

    Hi there,
I hope, someone can help me with my problem, I have been searching and trying different things for quite some time now, without success.
I treated myself a new Notebook, Acer Aspire S7 and wanted to run Arch on it. However I am new to Linux and want to try it out on an USB-Stick, to keep the factory install of Win8 intact. (Also, this notebook does not have such a great HDD capacity) Additionally I want to have full disk encryption.
So I followed the Beginner's Guide with modifications described here and here
When it came to install the bootloader I chose Grub for EFI.
I then removed the USB-Stick with the live-Arch, which I used for installation and rebooted and it worked!
However: As soon as I completely shut down and boot again, the USB-Stick with my installation is no longer recognized. If i boot the live-Arch again, reinstall Grub and then reboot, it again works.
Here is something, I found strange. This is the output of efibootmgr:
    BootCurrent: 0000
    Timeout: 0 seconds
    BootOrder: 2001,0003,0002,2002,2003
    Boot0000* USB HDD: KingstonDataTraveler 2.0
    Boot0001* Intel HDD0
    Boot0002* Windows Boot Manager
    Boot0003* arch_grub
    Boot2001* EFI USB Device
    Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
    Boot2003* EFI Network
BootCurrent is 0000, but that number does not appear in the Boot-Order list. Could that be something?
Well, I hope someone has an idea. I will happily share any information about my setup with you, just ask.
    Thanks,
    Max

Sorry for digging that threat up again. I just wanted to share with you the solution to the problem I was having. Perhaps it will save someone else some frustration.
The Acer Aspire S7 has a dongle that goes in the display port and provides an ethernet and an VGA port. It was that dongle that prevented the USB stick with the Arch installation from being recognized. Done attached -> USB stick was ignored, dongle detached -> it worked.
I have no idea, why that is the case, but maybe this info is helpful for someone.
    Cheers,
    Max
