[Solved]Replaced my /var partition (with dd) and am having boot issues

I recently got a new hard drive and have split /var and root across the two drives. However now I am having issues booting the computer. Each boot it mounts the /var and /home partition (both of which are on the new drive) and hangs for a large period of time before booting. (it does eventually boot fine)

Thanks.

Jarrah-95,
Thanks for your 'solution' post.  I had a problem on boot with the boot process 'stalling' with a "recreate volatile files and directory" message that would after about a 30 second delay eventually finish the boot process.  Based on your post I ran 'blkid' and discovered my 'swap' partition in my /etc/fstab file had the wrong UUID for the 'swap' entry.
After entering the 'correct' 'swap 'UUID',  the boot cycle is restored and fast as ever.  Back to the basics wins again.
Next task is to find out how I created the mistake.
best regards,
marvinudy

    Welcome to the forum.
    First thing that I would do would be to look at this Adobe KB Article to see if it helps.
    Next, I would try the tips in this ARTICLE.
    If that does not help, a Repair Install would definitely be in order.

  • [SOLVED] ReiserFS on /var partition

    Currently I have 4 partitions installed on my arch system
    NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
    sda 8:0 0 232.9G 0 disk
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 14.3G 0 part /

    ├─sda3 8:3 0 972.7M 0 part [SWAP]
    └─sda4 8:4 0 208.1G 0 part /home
    My root (/), /var, and /home partitions have an ext4 filesystem.
    I was wondering how I would format my /var partition and install the reiserFS

    I had to do this in the past because I didn't want reiserfs anymore.  So I can confirm that anonymous_user's suggestion works just fine.  In fact, with Linux, since everything is a file, you can actually create an entire working copy of your system by simply copying the contents to another storage medium.  Just make sure you use something that can correctly preserve the permissions and such.

  • I have an issue with my iphone touch screen not responding, apple replaced phone and still having same issue. They say its software, what can I do I need my phone to work

    Touch screen on Iphone slowly, over a few days stopped responding. Went to Genius Bar and was given a new 3GS because they didn't know how to fix the issue. Cool. Went home synced with Macbook Pro (new-12/2010), two days later same issue. This time when I went to Genius Bar they restored the phone to factory settings and instructed me to load as a new phone in Itunes instead of restoring information of the previous phone, which is an option good for when your replacing phone not fixing one Anywho, did everything they told me to do. SAME ISSUE A FEW DAYS LATER. This time I was told the software issue is with my Macbook and I thought this made sense, so I took it in along with the phone. That was yesterday. Phone working intermittently since leaving Apple. I was given instructions that if their "daily" fix didn't work to erase hard-drive and reinstall software that came with the macbook and start fresh. This would definately fix the issue. Extreme yes, but I need use of my phone, especially since we got rid of the house phone and all use cell phones. So last night I did the required erase of hard-drive and re-loaded all software that came with it and Microsoft Office for Mac. Plugged in the phone to set up in itunes and thought that was it. My phone is still not working. Can't answer when I try, can't make calls, etc. What the heck do I do? I'm starting to feel like a major lamo having to keep going back to Genius Bar, but I know enough to know these issues should have been resolved with the steps I've taken. I even went as far as to restore through my husbands computer and same thing. Could there be a problem with Itunes? Could the magnetic stripe in my debit card be hurting the device somehow, although that's a long shot since I have had the same or similar case since getting the phone. Frustrated beyond belief. Apple support not open at this hour so I'm trying my luck here.....
    Thanks for any input.

    restore iPhone as new and start again

  • Partition Map Schemes: HFS+ and FAT32 partitions with OSX and Windows

    OK so I know this question has been practically beaten to death, but I keep finding conflicting information. I am using a 2011 MacBook Pro, on which I will set up Windows through Boot Camp. I recently purchased a 750 GB WD external hard drive to use with time machine for a backup on my Mac. However, I also need to be able to use part of this for Windows files. SO.. I intend to use the HFS+ partition for the the Mac (500GB) and create a FAT 32 partition (250GB) to use for backing up windows files (using it for solely computer modeling and need to be able to transfer/share files with Mac users who use Parallels as well as copying to PC desktops). My question is what to use as the partition map scheme. I have heard that when using these two partition types, a Master Boot Record is needed (so Windows can recognize the FAT32 partition) and also that a GUID partition map is required for use with time machine, meaning windows would no longer be able to read the FAT32 partition. Is there a way to reconcile this? Either using Time Machine with HFS+ partition that is set to MBR or uisng FAT32 on Windows with a GUID partition map? Also if I were to use Parallels (with a GUID setup) instead of Boot Camp, could that be the way to save the windows files to the FAT32 Partition and avoid problems with Time Machine not working with MBR? Thanks for any expertise, as I have heard that both setups that I have mentioned both will work and both will not work. Any experience with a similar situation?

    Wow. Thanks for the extremely quick responses. Just for a few points of clarification.. I'm a complete newb at backing up strategies.
    Steve, you would recommend to not backup files from my Mac OSX and files from Windows (also on my Mac) on the same drive, correct?
    I appreciate the strategy of using it only as a backup, that makes quite a bit of sense. However, if I want to only backup my OSX files, and also store (solely as backup copies) say, a number of computer models (Rhino, Revit, etc.) that were created in Windows programs (not needing to store the entire Windows disk), would it not make sense to store these on the same drive in a different partition, creating the need for two different partition formats? And if I were to do this, maybe I should use NTFS instead of FAT32 (and reformat to GUID since that seems to be a standard for Apple and Windows 7 recognizes it..?) to keep them completely separate since the computer model files cannot be opened unless running the Windows programs.
    How do you use your drive with HFS+ and NTFS if not for backups? I will not need to access the HFS+ backup files in Windows, nor need to access files from an NTFS partition in OSX, so that seems to simplify things in that, at least at the moment, I will not need any Paragon software.
    Currently my drive is partitioned as HFS+ and FAT32 as MBR, with the HFS+ partition set up with Time Machine. It appears to be successful, I see my files in Mac HD -> "users" and all my docs, desktop items, etc. are listed. Seems that there is in fact no limit on TM's use of MBR maps, or else it is way above 160GB.
    Third, are you using CarbonCopyClone in place of Time Machine or in addition to it? If in addition would it create the bit-wise clone on the same HFS+ partition as TM is backing up to? Or a separate drive? I'd like to only have one external that I am backing up to for simplicity's sake. I've never used TM before, so this is all new to me. Also, I suppose I have been missing the distinction between storing copies of files, and making a complete backup of a disk image... just now realizing the difference. Thanks so much.

  • Auto replacing my tag brackets with lt and gt :(

    Hi everyone,
    I have an Interactive report that converts some '<a href ...>X</a>' text of mine by replacing the '<' and '>' with '&lt' and '&gt'. How can I make it so that a link is actually embedded (a link that says 'X'), rather than what shows up as '<a href ...>X</a>'
    This OTN thread covers it somewhat: Re: issue with html in sql - < is replaced to &lt ; - but the 'column formatting' (called report attributes for me) doesn't have a 'display as html' option:(

    Hi,
    Is the content of the column just the URL you want to link to?
    I have just tested creating an Interactive Report using:
    SELECT EMPNO,
    '&lt;a href="f?p=' || v('APP_ID') || ':11:' || v('SESSION') || '"&gt;' || EMPNO || '&lt;/a&gt;' EMPNO_LINK,
    ENAME
    FROM EMPand the second column showed up, and works as, a proper link.

  • [SOLVED] Converting the var partition filesystem from ReiserFS to ext4

    Hi,
    I have a system that still uses ReiserFS for its /var partition. It gives me some performence problems which make me want to convert it to the newer ext4. Can it be done without reinstalling the entire system? and if so, how?
    Last edited by Greenstuff (2013-10-05 14:01:41)

    Boot to a live environment.
    Mount the var partition and copy somewhere or tar it up.
    Umount the var partition.
    Format the old var partition to ext4.
    Mount the newly formatted var partition.
    Copy back or untar the archive.
    Reboot.
    EDIT: Make sure you adjust the fstab in the root partition before you reboot!

  • Boot partitions with recovery and windows? new SSD drive

    Gang,
    I have a new Retina 15 and bought a larger SSD from OWC. I also upgraded  an older MB Air (from 128 to 240GB) and so I had an OWC Envoy with the original 128G from the MB Air in it. Killer by the way with USB3 support. So I plugged the Envoy into the Retina formatted the Envoy and then used that as a back up for the Retina using Time Machine.
    I swapped out the old drive in the Retina and then put in the new OWC drive and of course the boot recovery partition was not there and so I plugged in the Envoy which had it and formatted the drive then installed from backup and everything worked fine.
    BUT.... I no longer have a recovery or windows partition both of which I would like to have for this machine.
    So how do I do that? Reinstall MT LION?
    Thanks
    Gordon

    Gang,
    Ok here is how you do it!
    First create a MT Lion Recovery disk using Lion Disk Maker:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39701/lion-diskmaker
    Then do a time machine backup to some kind of local drive or as I did my TimeCapsule.
    Boot holding down the option key with the Recovery Disk inserted (I made 16 SD card, but a 8G usb stick or the larger DVD writtable drive would work as well) and select to boot to the Recovery Disk. When booted, reformat the root boot drive with GUID partition and then do a full install to your standard boot drive. This will create the recovery partition and load the OS. This is the only way to get the recovery partition created.
    When done then select the Drive option when asked for were to upgrade your machine from. Then select the time machine backup which will load all your stuff.
    Your done!
    Thanks
    Gordon

    If HDD and SSD are separate devices, what you want is possible. Otherwise i can't say, probably not.
    they are separate drives

  • I am quite fed up with Apple and my iMac - multiple issues

    I've been a Windows user for years. I've suffered through all of the ups and downs of Windows over the years, mostly the downs. I have three Windows 7 computers, and quite frankly, both have performed quite beautifully, albeit without the polish of the Mac.
    Earlier this year, I decided to buy an iMac for a few reasons. First, they are just so beautiful, and even if you are going to run Windows they are probably the best Windows computers out there. Second, I wanted to do more video editing and found the Windows tools weren't very good. I also wanted to run some karaoke software (kJams) that at the time was not available for Windows.
    I was basically pleased with the iMac for a few months. However, there was one problem I could never solve: the wifi connection got lost periodically, even though I had made all of the system updates. I know this is a problem with the iMac, because my numerous Windows PCs and my two iPod toouches had no problem with a wifi connection. It appears from various posts here that this is indeed a problem many others have experienced since Snow Leopard's release, and as far as I can tell, despite many updates to the Airport software it has never been fixed by Apple. Strike 1.
    A couple of weeks ago, my iMac started running slow for no reason I could identify. I don't have a lot of software installed on it, I didn't download anything pirated or questionable. I did install bootcamp according to Apple's instructions, and it worked fine (I wanted to run some Windows games). I tried doing all of the things that folks suggest when your computer is running slow - repairing permissions, running Onyx, etc. None of them seemed to do anything. I tried creating a new user, it had the same problem. I also noticed various other problems with the computer: it was slow to recognize a USB hard drive (and sometimes didn't recognize it at all), external hard drives would not appear in the time machine set up, and various other problems I can't quite recall. Overall, while presumably nothing serious should have been wrong with my computer, I decided I probably should simply reinstall OS X. Strike 2.
    Now, quite frankly I would have been happy to simply reset the computer to its factory state. I would point out that nearly all Windows PCs come with a separate repair partition where it is very easy to do that with one click. I guess Apple is so confident in the reliability of its computers it doesn't think this is a useful feature. So, I had to install OS X using the DVD that came with the computer. It took quite a while to do this, and actually it wasn't at all clear to me that my settings would be kept (one would think that this is something the install screen would point out - Windows makes a quite clear distinction between a "clean install" and a re-install).
    I was somewhat pleased when all of my settings were there. After the long process of reinstalling, I click on the "Accounts" setting I get a message saying that the Preferences application has quit unexpectedly -- clearly there are still problems. Quite irritating given that I just spent an hour trying to re-install the OS. I google around and again find others have had this problem, but unfortunately none of the proposed fixes I try seem to work. And my computer still seems to have other problems - it still doesn't recognize external drives very well. I will say that it seemed to be running a little faster though. Strike 3.
    Anyway, I decide I need to do a full clean install. When I do that, things seem to be working better, although the mouse pointer is quite jerky - I'm thinking that maybe I need to just run software update to fix that. I start the software update - a nice 1gb download is required. Now ,the problem is that I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH WIFI DISCONNECTIONS. So no matter how many times I start the download, I CAN"T FINISH IT. And Apple, in its infinite wisdom, HAS NOT WRITTEN A DOWNLOADER THAT IS SMART ENOUGH TO CONTINUE WHERE IT LEFT OFF. How hard is this to do, really? Do I now have to lug my iMac across the house to put it on a wired connection? I've already wasted hours trying to get this piece of junk working.
    And the sad fact is, once I am done, I will have a very beautiful computer that can't hold an internet connection.
    I have to give Apple kudos for the iMac hardware. It's great. But the software? It's fine as long as it works. But it doesn't always work - and when it doesn't, it actually at this point seems more buggy and difficult to repair than Windows. Is this the last Mac I'll ever buy? Probably. Quite frankly, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that Apple's best developers have moved on to more exciting pastures (iPhone for example). And given the number of unsolved issues posted on these forums (including the ones I mention here), it appears that Apple engineers are simply asleep at the switch.

    Let me start by saying I don't use wireless so I haven't had to deal with it, and I assume you know your way around all the settings in your modem/switch and Windows 7.

    Changing from WEP to WPA
    How do I change from WEP to WPA security, which I have been told is better. I'm sure it is simple but i cant find it.
    These settings are in your wireless router, so you will have to consult the manual for how to access the administration page and change the wireless security settings. Once you have WPA or WPA2 enabled, you will need to reauthenticate your computer with the wireless network since you will have a new password. If you have problems with persistent password requests popping up, you will need to open the "Keychain Access" utility and remove all keychain entries associated with your wireless network and password.

    Networking In networking utilities, the in-depth network troubleshooting and monitoring utility VisualRoute ($49.95) has been updated to fix a bug with the "whois" routine, and likewise the Wi-Fi hot spot finder AirRadar ($19.95) has also been updated with a small bug fix for the signal status not updating.
    The network administration and security testing utility NetScan (free) has also been updated and now has a revamped interface and new features for port scanning as well as fixes for icon appearance and update-checking problems.

    As for restore, it is different, won't be the same, but there are two ways to handle that on a Mac:
    Apple TimeMachine
    Clone OS X: bootable (yes, you can boot from 2nd or 3rd hard drive) - SuperDuper ($29) is superb and I update the backup (15 minutes) before applying updates.
    That way I have my previous system with all data, not just an image, all my data and going back in time.
    From another thread:
    if you have issues when using an AirPort router, you've either got interference issues causing your problems or a system issue.
    whenever possible:
    1) Vist an Apple Store
    2) Try your machine on their network
    3) If the connection drops, make them fix it.
    Reason being, I've tried and checked log after log and have never seen a connection drop inside an Apple Store.
    My gut reaction would be interference but the easiest move may be to check it in an Apple Store if at all possible.

    If you connect to the Internet or a network in several different ways (using AirPort or Ethernet, for example), you can change the order of the network port configurations your computer tries when connecting to the Internet or a network.
    To change the priority of a network port configuration:
    1) Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Network.
    2) Choose Set Service Order from the Actions pop-up menu.
    3) Drag a service, such as Ethernet, to the top of the list. When you try to connect, Mac OS X will try the port configuration at the top of the list.©
    Tip: Any Network Device listed here that you'll never use for a Network Connection should be set to 'Inactive'.

  • ATI display driver lost with Linux and XP dual boot os

    I brought ThinkPad W500 with windows vista. I want to get rid of the hidden boot system reserved partition and downgrade to windows xp and install OpenSuse os. Following some sourses found on the web, I first set the bios sata ahci mode to compatable mode. Then install windows xp and update the sata driver. Restart and reset the bios sata back to ahci mode. It works fine with windows xp and I install back all driver. Finally I install OpenSuse and create dual boot with Grub.
    But a serious problem come up with me. Everytime after restart from the linux os and back to windows xp, xp doesn't regonize the ATI display divice and tell me no driver installed with low screen resolution. And I have to restart the machine and boot direct into xp for the second time and the problem gone. But it is so annoying of doing this everytime. Anyone can help? Many thanks.
    Solved!

    Hi stanleyimko,
    I don't have an answer, just a couple of questions:
    Does your W500 have switchable graphics?  If so, you may have to turn off "let the OS detect" or permanently select one or the other in BIOS.  XP isn't switchable aware, so I don't know why that would make a difference.
    Do you see the problem on cold (re) boot to XP, or only on warm reboot from Linux to XP?
    Seems like something is leaving your BIOS in an odd state (I guess that's obvious) and maybe a cold reboot would sort it.

  • AIR with JavaScript and AJAX (noob design issues)

    Okay, so as the subject states, I'm a noob when it comes to designing an AIR app. My question is kind of two fold:
    First, as a matter of design, I've got a main window that has several drop-down type menus "File", "Preferences", "Help" that kind of thing. My plan was to keep reusing the main window for each of my different screens (unless a pop-up/dialog type screen was called for)
    Anyway, the application I'm writing will, in part, handle a database of patrons. So under one of the menus (File in this case) I've got a "Patron" option. Clicking on "Patron" fires a function called newPatron() which in turn calls my function ebo.displayScreen('patron.htm'). This latter function takes the filename passed in and reads that file then dumps it's contents out to the main screen.
    So, my main window consists (in part) of the following html:
    <body onload="ebo.doLoad();">
         <div id="content"></div>
    </body>
    then my displayScreen function looks like this:
    function displayScreen(filename){
         var my = {};
         // get a handle on the file...
         my.file = air.File.applicationDirectory(resolvePath(filename);
         // get a handle on the stream...
         my.stream = new air.FileStream();
         //open the stream for read...
         my.stream.open(my.file, air.FileMode.READ);
         // read the data...
         my.data = my.stream.readUTFBytes(my.stream.bytesAvailable);
         // close the stream...
         my.stream.close();
         // update the screen (I'm using jQuery here)
         $("#content").empty().append(my.data);
    So anyway, this works like a champ. I click on "Patron" from my file menu and the screen changes to display the contents of patron.htm.
    Currently, patron.htm just contains the following:
    <div style="text-align:left;">
         <input type="button" value="add" onclick="ebo.add(1,2);" />
    </div>
    <div id="result"><div>
    ebo.add looks like this:
    function add(a,b){
         var my = {};
         my.result = a + b;
         $("#result").empty().append(my.result + "<br />");
    So, if anyone hasn't guessed by now, the code contained in the ebo namespace gets included on the main screen when the application loads, and my problem is that despite the fact that once the patron.htm file is loaded in the content div by clicking on the menu option, my button on that screen refuses to work. I've even tried just having the button do an alert directly,
    <input type="button" value="add" onclick="alert('AIRRocks!');" />
    but even that fails!
    So, I added some code to the main page to test a button from there...
    <body onload="ebo.doLoad();">
         <input type="button" value="add" onclick="ebo.add(1,10);" />
         <div id="result"></div>
         <div id="content"></div>
    </body>
    So, now when the main screen loads, I get an "add" button and when I click it the number 11 appears in the "result" div. When I click on the Patron menu option, the new html and javascript are loaded into the "content" div, but the add button in that area refuses to work!
    What gives? I'm sure I'm missing something. So I guess the two questions are: is my scheme of loading new content into the main window by reading the contents of a file, flawed in some way? Or am I just missing something about making calls from this dynamically loaded content? It *looks* like it should work fine, but if I can't make javascript calls from the resultant content, then the concept is no good.
    I realize this has been a somewhat long winded post, but hopefully it describes in enough detail the problem I'm having. I should maybe add that I've looked at what's in the DOM using the AIR HTML/JS Application Inspector and it looks like everything should work perfectly.
    I hope someone out there can help me and might have the patience to explain where I've gone wrong. I might also mention that the only book I've read (or am reading) on AIR with JavaScript and AJAX is "Adobe AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime) with Ajax: Visual QuickPro Guide"... it really hasn't covered aspects of what makes good design (like what's the best way to reuse the main application window to hold interactive content)... but anyway, there you have it.
    Again, I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks!
    Chris

    Thanks for responding, Andy. I don't think I'm losing my namespace. That
    thought had crossed my mind, which is why (and I thought I put this in my
    original post) I tried putting a somple alert in the onclick event of the
    button in my "patron.htm" file... but that simple alert doesn't even work.
    :o(
    Do you still think it's an issue with the namespace?

  • FCC with ASCII and UTF-8 encoding issue

    Hi,
    I have File to IDoc scenario and I am doing FCC which has Japanese chars. (PO with HEADER,1,ITEMS,*)
    I have specified UTF-8 encoding in file adapter to processed the file.
    Earlier, my source file was in ASCII format which had junk chars; my file was picked and Idoc posted had junk chars.
    Then I used UTF-8 encoding for my source file to correct this issue. XI showed proper Japanese chars but this time Header part is missing.
    Do I have to specify encoding in "module" for File adapter?
    Regards,

    Thanks for your replies Chirag/Gabriel,
    ISO encoding didn't work.
    My source file will be in UTF-8 format.
    There is one correction. It is ANSI encoding, not ASCII as in the subject.
    I still have this issue when my document offset is 0.
    I tried to play around with FCC and found this odd thing.
    When first line of my input file is blank....and I omit reading the first line with offset 1, then file is read in its entirety.
    Again, when I remove this blank line and the file starts with Header and with offset 0 in File adapter, then again my Header part is missing.
    What to do?
    Regards,
    AV
