[solved] right-click menus instantly close

When I right-click in a GTK application, the context menu that appears is instantly closed upon release of the mouse button. This is extremely annoying as it always automatically selects the first option from the context menu, e.g. creating a new folder in Thunar.
I remember having read about this issue somewhere here in the Arch forums, but couldn't find the topic again since yesterday. I think it had something to do with the selected GTK or icon theme.
I'm using awesome as window manager and my GTK2-config looks like this:
gtk-theme-name="Aldabra"
gtk-icon-theme-name="gnome-brave"
gtk-font-name="Sans 10"
gtk-cursor-theme-name="Bluecurve"
gtk-cursor-theme-size=0
gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS
gtk-toolbar-icon-size=GTK_ICON_SIZE_SMALL_TOOLBAR
gtk-button-images=1
gtk-menu-images=1
gtk-enable-event-sounds=0
gtk-enable-input-feedback-sounds=0
gtk-xft-antialias=1
gtk-xft-hinting=1
gtk-xft-hintstyle="hintfull"
gtk-xft-rgba="rgb"
gtk-recent-files-max-age=0
Thanks for any advice!

No OpenBox as i wrote, it's the awesome window manager.
You posted before I could edit my stupidity   I have seen this sort of behavior with xcompmgr.  You might try turning it off (temporarily) and see if you can replicate the issue.

  • [Solved] Default application right-click menus (Openbox)

Hi, I am wondering how to edit the look of the default "right-click" menu for applications so that it matches my openbox root menu.  I want to do simple things, like take the icons out, and change the highlight color.  I've been doing a lot of digging (rc.xml, themerc, obtheme, google, etc)  and am just getting nowhere, but I'm wasting a ton of time looking, and feel like the answer is right under my nose. It seems like it's a "per app" sort of thing, where apps are unaffected by the ob theme.
    Any help is appreciated.

The openbox themes only affect elements that are controlled by the window manager.  Popup menus that come up in some applications when your right click are not controlled by the window manager - they are a component of a widget toolkit.  This would most likely be gtk or qt.  If it is gtk, you can edit your gtkrc or use a tool like lxappearance.

  • Right click menus do not appear fully.

'''''italic text'''''Hello, I'm hoping someone can give me some help with a problem I am having with the "right click menu" not appearing completely, does not matter what site or where on the browser I try to get the menu. It makes it very difficult copy and pasting.
I am using the 3.6.19 version (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.19) Gecko/20110707 Firefox/3.6.19). I use this version because it allows me to use the ad-ons that I use every single day like, Roboform and others that at this point will not work with any of the newer browsers.
This problem started about two/three days ago and I'm not sure why it happened or how to correct it. I have not added any new downloads or anything else for that matter. Is there anyone that can help me fix this little annoyance please?

    Thanks for the response!
It's via my distribution's repositories. 64-bit. I just downloaded the version from your link above (14.0.1), which turned out to be 32-bit, and there's no change. I don't get any D-Bus errors on load (only some complaints that a 64-bit plugin was the wrong ELF class and couldn't be loaded), but I still can't make any menus appear. I also tried downloading Aurora (16.0a2) with the same result.
The system requirements should be fine as I have been running Firefox on this machine since I bought it a few years ago, and being quad core with 8GB RAM it should be well above the minimum specs needed.
I'm thinking it's a bug that has been introduced somewhere along the way. Any ideas how I can troubleshoot?

  • Mouse Right Click Menus flash and are hard to read

I am using Windows 7, and on FF 14.0.1.
Basically, I am having the exact same issue as is described here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/753329?as=aaq
When I right click on menus, or when I go to the Firefox menu, the menu is bordered, but it is transparent. If I click on the location where a menu option is, that option is enabled (open new tab, etc). Or if I use the shortcut key, that also works.
    But it's a big pain.

Do you use a custom theme or any add-ons that customize menus?
This was helpful to some users in the other thread: did you try disabling graphics hardware acceleration? Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved?

  • Magic Mouse Right click menus not working

Just got a magic mouse (using 10.5.8) and when I right click on a dock icon, the menu comes up (ie empty trash) however I cannot (left) click any of the choices and the menu freezes. I have to right click the desktop to snap out of it. This is happening for all icons/menus. Anyone know of this issue? All other mouse functions (swiping, scrolling etc...) seem to be working. Regular right click functions work, it's just this menu issue.
    thanks

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
If not then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • I have graphical errors on the browser edges when i use the right click menu and close out tabs.

Ok I will try to explain this the best way I can as I'm not sure what to call it. But simply put, if I have FF4 open, sometimes I get a graphical glitch on the edge of the window. It seems to always occur when I right click near the edge of the browser window, then close out that current tab. A small part of the context menu remains on the screen. Here is a screenshot:
notice the section in the lower right hand part of the browser. That's the leftover context menu in the edge of the window. There is also a section on the bottom of the browser as well. I didn't plan on that one, and have no idea why it is there. I had no menu open there. Anyone every see this before?

You can also use ctrl-T or File > New tab (if you have the menubar showing). I can't find an extension that will help you bring back the previous behavior but there probably will be one soon.

  • Reader 9 - "Print" and "Open with Adobe Reader..." options are missing from the right-click menus.

Since upgrading from Reader 8 to Reader 9, Windows XP users are no longer able to right-click 1 or more PDF files from Windows Explorer and choose either "Print" or "Open with Adobe Reader...". Those options are no longer listed in the right-click menu. We have experienced this on several computers.  I downgraded a PC to Reader 8, and these options re-appeared, then disappeared again when I upgraded back to Reader 9.

Could you tell me which version of Reader 9 you are installing?
Please give the exact version it is showing you from Help | About Adobe Reader.

  • Strange issue with right click menus in apps

Every now and again the right click menu will stop working in applications. I won't be able to right click at all and sometimes closing and re-opening the app will work and sometimes I will need to restart the computer to fix the issue.
I am running a very simple Fluxbox and SLiM based system and only really use Chromium, Thunderbird, XChat and Gvim on a regular basis but it seems to affect all of them from time to time which suggests to me it is a system wide problem. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this rather annoying problem?
As an aside this never effects the right click menu in Fluxbox.

Issues with a massive right-click context menu have been reported as caused by Firebug, so make sure to update Firebug to the latest version.

  • Roboform commands in right click menus - can not find option to turn off that feature?

Right click has all of the roboform commands and it takes a much longer mouse movement to get to the other commands. Seems like there should be way to turn this feature on or off as needed. roboform has a context menu dialog box in settings and all of the items are unchecked.

The Menu Editor extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/710/ - can be used to hide Menu items, but it hasn't been updated for the Firefox 4.0beta versions yet so it may not work completely for every menu.

  • Why won't my tabs close once I click the red X, or when I right-click and select Close Tab?

Today I ran across an issue on my work computer where the tabs would not close. Normally, I would just close the browser and hope it fixes itself, but on my work computer I run a program in the browser that i should not close. Or, at least, it would be a huge hassle to start it all over again. Any suggestions or insights in to how I can resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Can't see context menus (right click, or "Firefox button" menu)

Recently my Firefox hasn't been letting me see right click menus. It only happens in Firefox, and will still let me use keyboard shortcuts (such as pressing 'T' after right clicking on a link to open it on a new tab). I thought maybe it was one of my add-ons, so I re-installed Firefox 8 (had Firefox 9 before).
I hadn't installed any programs before this had started happening, it just started.

  • Illustrator's weak right-click menu...

Why is the right-click menu on Illustrator so weak? Other Adobe products seem to have a plethora of menu items when you right click on a selected object... I can't count the number of times I've right clicked in Illustrator to copy something only to rediscover that not even "cut" "copy" or "paste" are available. Why is this?

Because right-click to bring up a menu is:
Much faster and easier than keyboard shortcuts
Reduces cognitive load by having a consistent way to display what can be done with what you are right-clicking on
Would be more consistent with some other CS products
Even when there are right-click menus available in similar places in CS products (such as the layers in Photoshop and InDesign), the menus are not the same.  Not even close, really.  This inconsistency with right-click menus matches the inconsistency with just about every other UI/UX aspect across the CS.  And that is inexcusable.  When working across multiple applications, these inconsistencies create a persistent cognitive load on the user, due to the need to keep in mind which application they are in and how to perform the same functions in this application as the other applications.  It is greatly complicated when one spends days or weeks working mostly in one application, then days or weeks working mostly in another application, and then switching back to the original one.  It is like learning it all over again.
This prevents apps in the CS from every becoming natural and second-nature, where tasks are performed without concious thought on how to use the UI to accomplish them.  If a person was only ever in one application, this is not an issue. But it is sold and marketed as a suite, and even has "suite" in the name.  But the UI, UX, and workflows reflect the reality: it is a collection of individual applications that just happen to be sold as a package.
