[Solved] Samba: Windows clients complain about recycle bin corruption

I have a few samba shares located on an NTFS partition mounted as
UUID=CC6AB0826AB06ABA /data ntfs-3g gid=users,umask=000 0 0
I can access them fine, as well as copy/move/delete files, but every time I go to the share from a windows PC (2x win8.1, 1x win7 clients), I get the following message
The Recycle Bin on \\Server\share is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive? y/n
No matter what I answer, the message will pop up the next time I access the folder. Here is my smb.conf

Deleting the recycle.bin from the share didn't seem to do anything. I thought it was just being recreated, but looking at the partition on the linux "server" via vnc, the recycle.bin folder was still there untouched even thought explorer didn't list it. Deleting it from the "server" seems to have solved it, though.
The NTFS partition is an external HDD which I used before converting the htpc to linux. I'm going to wait and see and if everything works fine, I will probably convert it to a linux-native format to get rid of ntfs-3g.

  • Continuous Recycle Bin Corrupt

    Hi
I have an issue with a Corrupted Recycle Bin message popping up for all users.  Even when creating a new domain login once the user has logged in this message pops up.  The usual method via cmd prompt to remove the message does not work.
Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this.  Small issue I know but still annoying.
    Thanks
    Tom

You said you tried to remove the recycle bin using command prompt?
from the C:\ level of command prompt, you did this command?
    C:\>rd /s c:\$Recycle.Bin
c:\$Recycle.Bin, Are you sure (Y/N)? y (hit enter)
    C:\>
Reboot afterwards, also try a chkdsk from command prompt
type, without quotes, "chkdsk /f" (hit enter)
I apologize, I am just baffled as to why removing the recycle bin isn't working :-/ I will do my best to assist you, and hopefully someone with more experience with this will chime in.

  • Accessing the Recycle Bin via Windows Explorer

I run a no-icon desktop and have noticed in the RC that I can not seem to access the Recycle Bin via Windows Explorer as has previously been the case. Thus making it, in my experience so far, impossible to empty the Recycle Bin without turning on Desktop Icons to do it, and then turning them off again when finished.
I have found a work-around that is quite simple to setup, add a Favourates Shortcut to Windows Explorer, but I wondering with there is a setting somewhere now that needs activating/deactivating to have Windows Explorer show the Recycle Bin as one the the items in the Navigation Panel under Computer?

When the Recycle Bin is visible on the Desktop, left-click and drag the icon  image to the TaskBar near the Start button. If you have Aero, you'll see a message "Pin to Windows Explorer".
Then open Windows Explorer and you'll see the Recycle Bin on the DeskTop from the left column.
Now you can opt to not display the Desktop Icon. Contol Panel>Appearance and Personalization> Personalization and select >Change Desktop Icons>Uncheck Recycle Bin.
    Work for you?
After doing the above, I then opened Windows Explorer, and used the organize tab. I then selected "the show all folders" option, selected ok. The Recycle Bin now appears in the left Navigation Pane and the Icon is not visble on the desktop. I believe it is because I pinned it to win explorer by dragging it to the taskbar that it appears there.

Has anybody else seen this message and is there a fix for it? I am getting this infrequently for about 2 days now.

  • Recycle Bin keeps getting corrupted

    Hi Everyone,
Like many other threads here we are experiencing that the Recycle Bin is getting corrupted. We've already tried the basic troubleshooting like remove the Recycle Bin and disabling the Recycle Bin. However every reboot or at a point in time the Recycle Bin
gets corrupted again. Let me tell you something more about the environment to give a better view on the problem.
The problem is occuring on a Windows Server 2008 R2 which has been virtualized on a Hyper-V host which is a Windows Server 2012 R2. The VM exists of two VHDs (not VHDX). One for the OS (which is set as a IDE Device) and one for the DATA (which is set on
a SCSI Adapter). Both disk have the Recycle Bin enabled, but the corruption problem only occurs of DATA (F:\) disk.
We've tried the following approaches for a solution, however with no luck:
    Run the command:    rd /s /q C:\$Recycle.bin
Configured the Recycle Bin to directly delete files on F:\ (bypass Recycle Bin)
Executed a CHKDSK /f /r (online and offline [VHD mounted in OS of the Hyper-V Host]
Executed a SFC /scannow on the OS
And since all of that didn't give a solution, we've decided to copy all the data from the DATA VHD, except the SYSVOL and Recycle Bin folder to a brand new VHD. Set the NTFS as needed. Rebooted, worked for a day, same problem got back.
So after that we thought it has to be a process/software/service which triggered a delete and gets the Recycle Bin corrupted. So we started ProcMon to give us more insight. But this seemed a bad idea because we can't tell when or reproduce the problem so
    ProcMon generates to much information.
Now before I'm going any further on troubleshooting, I was wondering if there is anyone out there who experienced the (exact) same problem. Or someone that can give a push in the right direction.
Thanks for reading and many thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Joey
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

    Hi Joey,
    >>We've tried the following approaches for a solution, however with no luck:

You may run the command "rd /s /q Drive-Letter:\$Recycle.bin " , in your case the issue happens to F:\ then the command is "rd /s /q F:\$Recycle.bin "

  • $Recycle.Bin or system volume inforamation virus

Hi, I recently purchase the windows 8 Laptop , in that after windows 8 updates  installation "$recycle.bin &  System Volume Information" folder are created in all partion folders like C,D, i thinking as a  virus folders,
because of I am unable to delete this folders in my system, this folders are created in all my hard drives. I want remove this virus. How can I do this one.

    Hi
These 2 folders are normal for Windows installation, not virus.
$recycle.bin contains the data for the Recycle Bin and the System Volume Information contains the Restore Points for System Restore on each drive.
These folders are normally Hidden, by default.

  • FIM 2010 R2 Sp1, Windows 2008 R2 SP1 and Recycle Bin issues

    Hi,
    We are running FIM 2010 R2 Sp1 (build 4.1.3613.0)
Also running Windows 2008 R2 Forest and Domain functional level environment. (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on all DCs). The previous Recycle Bin hotfix https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/979214/ fails to install since we are already running WS08 R2 SP1
    on all the DCs.
During deprovisioning, when a user is deleted from the source HR system, FIM deletes the object from AD, FIM Sync & Portal.
FIM also manages a FIM Portal group, where membership is assigned manually. This membership is then updated in AD.
When a user (who is part of this group) is deleted in HR, FIM deletes it from AD, FIM Sync, FIM Portal, FIM also removes user from FIM Portal group. The user is also removed from the AD group (by FIM group object membership attribute flow to AD)
...however, on the next AD Export, FIM fails to update the same group and complains about this very same user (CD Error) and lists the user as: CN=username\0ADEL:GUID, CN=Deleted Objects,DC=domain,DC=com
It appears that there is a problem with FIM and the Recycle Bin again?
Are there any new Recycle Bin/FIM hotfixes ?
    Thanks,
    SK

May I suggest you review the following:
Is the AD MA user account part of the Domain Admins group? If yes, please remove it from this Group
Verify that the "CN=Deleted Objects" container has not somehow been included in the AD MA OU scope

  • Thoughts about the bin window - bugs or features and workarounds...

    Hi there,
I really have big toubles using the bin window. It is even worse in OSX.5 (the only thing I don't like with OSX.5 and Logic8!).
    There are some Problems:
    1. I can't move any audio-files to wherever I want them to without Logic is copying them back into the audio-folder by saving the song. The problem is that I want Logic to copy imported audio files into the audio-folder but if I change something manually Logic should remember that without working against me. So for example: I am bouncing a lot of audio into the bounce folder. In Logic 7 all the finished bounces were located there on the hard drive. Easy to find and to organize. But in Logic 8 they are moved to the audio-folder and I have to search very carefully which files I want to send to my client. That's the biggest source of trouble for me right now.
    2. If I am making groups, Logic is sometimes copying even that audio-files back into the normal audio-folder. The problem here is: sometimes. I really have no idea what the problem is. Sometimes just some audiofiles are staying in the group (on the hd) for a couple of Logic-saves and then are moved back at the 10th save or something.
    3. I am not able to organize my groups and audio files very well. So if I have group that always is shown on top of the bin window and I have a audio-bounce called "zoo" it is the last one in the list. Then I have to move it the whole way up to the group. That costs me about a half our per day. Way too much. There should be some kind of easier handling. For example a second window for groups or something. The next one is that I have to call the group something like 001AASFX or ZZZ_SFX so that I am able to find it fast enough in the finder. It was so much easier to go the bounce folder in Logic 7 days.
    4. The hide-regions keycommand was unstable with OSX.4.10 but now with OSX.5 it is not working at all. If I choose a audiofile in the bin window and hit the standard keycommand for hiding regions just the region for that audiofile is hiding and instantly shown again. I want to have a shorter way to move my bounced files into the group that is the whole way up to the list's beginning.
So I wonder if that are new features or if it is really buggy. I am not able to work with that structure right now and with that kind of unstable location behavior. Are there any workarounds, tips, tricks? Is there anyone who feels like me? May I hope for a update?
    That's it

    Hey Jim,
thanks for the support. Seems to be something Apple has to work on. There are some posts and questions about the bin window in every forum I know but there is never a "this is not want we want and there are bugs" - thread. In fact the whole Logic 8 structure with the one-window-gui is great and works much better than I expected. So it is no general "what the **** are they doing"-thing
Nevertheless, is there a way to get this to apple? I don't know if they are aware of these problems and perhaps the testers are making music with one bounce and that's it. Just one file is not that difficult to handle, organize and to find. But there are other users working in different ways (like us I think).
@ David: I am sorry but you are wasting time and thread-space. If you don't say anything if you do not feel comfortable nothing will change. You are not able to let it rain in Austria (yet) but there are real guys working at apple and it's not a kind of wonder that there is logic at all. So am trying to discuss here something and hope for any reaction or attention and don't need any "go deeply into your self and you will find a way"-stuff. Thanks anyway to bring god back to that forum.

I have a scenario for you in active directory when two passwords may be valid:
Old passwords can also work on domain controllers that have not received replication yet from either the domain controller the password was changed on, or the PDC emulator in the domain.
    Let's take a scenario where we have a 3 site, 3 domain controller (DC) active directory: Site1 with DC1, site2 with DC2 and site3 with DC3.
The ACS application resides in Site3 and is configured to use DC3 for authentication. We have a user "user1" with a password of "123".
User1 decides to call the helpdesk and changes his password to "456".
The helpdesk uses DC1 to make password changes because they are located in site1. For a period of time (based on replication, which defaults to 3 hours between sites) the 123 password and the 456 password will be
    valid.
If the user1 user tries the "123" password it will work until DC3 receives the changed password from normal replication. If user1 tries to use 456, DC3 will flag this as a wrong password, and then check the PDC
emulator of the domain to see if it has received a newer password. The PDC emulator will validate the login, and then trigger an immediate replication with DC3.

  • Active directory recycle bin in Windows STORAGE server 2008 R2

I'd like to find a tool that helps me to monitor deleted server files. I understand that this tool is called Active directory recycle bin. I can't enable it. I can't even open lpd.exe. I'm using Windows storage server 2008 r2 essentials. Could someone
help me with that? Thanks in advance.

In that case you must use a solution which combines Auditing
and Backup solutions. Just to know who has deleted a file or folder does not really help you. You must be able to restore the deleted file or folders.
If you need to find out at what time who deletes what file you should use auditing. Normally organizations enable auditing on sensitive data and folders to keep track who touches the stuff. Auditing is enabled in windows and by the administrator. Take a
look at the below links if you want to enable auditing on files and folders:
Use auditing to track who deleted your files
However do not forget that you need to have backup solutions in order to restore a deleted file in case someone accidentally or intentionally deletes a file or folder. Using System Restore with Previous Version feature may comes handy if you are dealing
with small number of computers. Otherwise you need to prepare yourself for a backup plan using Data Protection Manager as Denis mentioned or Windows Backup role (WBadmin) including in Windows Server 2008. More info on links below. I have included a video of
how to recover lost data using previous versions for you.

To prevent others from reading your mail, don't give them access to your account. If others need to use your computer for some reason, set up personal accounts, or a guest account, and switch to it before allowing them access. This is the simplest, and most effective, method.
Email message files can be read as plain text in TextEdit or any word processor.
To protect your email messages from being viewed by others while in your account, you would have to lock the folder, putting it into an encrypted disk image that required a password to be opened and mounted. You would have to double-click on the image and give your password to mount it before launching Mail then unmount it as soon as you're done. My guess is that you could replace the ~/Library/Mail folder with an alias pointing to the folder on the disk image.
It may work, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle.

  • [solved] cpanp wrongly complains about missing ExtUtils::MakeMaker

(This appears to be the most suited subforum for the following matter. Please excuse and correct me if I am wrong.)
As there is no AUR package for the CPAN module Image::Magick, which I need, I am trying to install it with cpanplus and cpanplus-dist-arch (and yes, I ran setupdistarch). Unsuccessfully, though:
    $ sudo cpanp i Image::Magick
    Installing Image::Magick (6.72)

[ERROR] Use of uninitialized value $pkgver in substitution (s///) at /usr/share/perl5/vendor_perl/CPANPLUS/Dist/Arch.pm line 1591.
So cpanp complains about ExtUtils::MakeMaker not being installed, which is wrong:
    $ pacman -Qs makemaker

A highly capable, feature-rich programming language
    local/perl-extutils-makemaker 6.59-1

Re-installing ExtUtils-MakeMaker with cpanp does not help. Any ideas what could be wrong and how to fix it? (Also I am open to suggestions for other means of installing CPAN modules.)
    EDIT:
Just retried with latest git version of cpanplus-dist-arch. No change.
Last edited by Franek (2011-10-23 21:16:06)

Long story short is that Image::Magick is bundled with ImageMagick! Install the imagemagick package and you should be just fine. The PerlMagick distribution which contains the Image::Magick module on CPAN is simply a copy of what comes with ImageMagick.
The warning about ExtUtils::MakeMaker is just something that cpanp does for every dependency of a module that you build. It is very annoying and other than convincing the CPANPLUS maintainer to remove it, there is nothing I can do about it. But it is a warning and not an error. I've just gotten used to it I suppose.
The error about an uninitialized value which stops things for you is a bug. I'll try to figure out why it happens and fix it. Thanks for reporting it. I am having a tough time reproducing it, though. Which version of pacman are you using?
