[solved] Script runs differently in cron, than in command line

I have a script that I made to control the notorious memory leak in checkgmail:
#!/bin/bash
killall checkgmail
sleep 3
/usr/sbin/checkgmail-gtk
Now, if I run it manually
$ ./.scripts/r_checkgmail
everything works fine.
However, if I add the very same line to user cron, all it does is kill checkgmail process, but never restarts it.
Why?

I'm assuming that checkmail-gtk is a GUI program. If so then you need to tell it which display to run on, try this in your script...
DISPLAY=:0 /usr/sbin/checkmail-gtk

  • How to run multiple java files concurrently using command line?

    Hi,
    I have to write a script to run multiple java files and c files concurrently. Say, A and C are java files and B is another binary executable file, I have to make sure they are run in the order A-B-C, then I was trying to run by using
    java A & ./B & java C
    But it turned out that B could run before A started... Is there any way that I can ensure that A runs before B, and B runs before C by using the command line?
    Thanks a lot.

    Sorry, I didn't make my question clear enough...
    A has to give some output files that B needs to get started,Then B can start at any time--even before A--and just wait for those files to be written. For instance, A could write to a temp file, then rename it to the real name. However, if there are multiple files, and they all have to exist, even this won't necessarily work. There are other approaches that will though.
    although writing the output takes very short time,Depends on when the OS decides to give A CPU time, what else is going on on that disk controller and/or network, etc.
    B could still run before A finishes the writing, As it can if you sleep for 1, or 10, or 1,000,000 seconds before starting B.
    if B can't find the info it wants, it fails to move on. That's why I need to make sure A starts before B.No, you need to make sure A's data is there before B tries to use that data.

  • (CS3 JS) script runs differently from Scripts Panel vs. ESTK2

    First things first: INDD CS3 / Javascript
    I have a strange thing happening and am wondering if y'all have run into this as well. I have a fairly simple script (primarily just find/change queries). It works like a charm when running it from ESTK2; however, when running it from the scripts panel within INDD, it skips two of the find/change queries inexplicably. 90% of the script works the same, but there are two sections of the script that seem to just not fire.
    And yes, I have made double-sure that I am running the same script and that the one I am running from ESTK2 and from INDD are the exact same, saved versions.
    Is there a fundamental difference between running from the scripts panel and firing from ESTK2? I ran both on the same template, then undid each step-by-step, and it appears that both times the script ran the queries in the same order; however, when it hit a certain spot in the script, one version (the one fired from ESTK2) shows where the text was deleted, and the other looks like it did nothing.
    Is this something that any of you have run across as well? If necessary, I can post the code; however, I figured at this point, I would just ask the general theoretical question of why there might be a difference.
    Thanks!
    Matt Hollowell

    Thanks for the response Kasyan and Peter. I was beginning to feel like that lone person afflicted by some rare scripting illness. I am going to try and solve this later today. I am thinking maybe I need to target INDD with a statement or define an application specific variable or something to ensure that the script "knows" what it is supposed to be doing when run from the scripts panel. I am still confounded why it would run differently, and all I can think is that when it is run from ESTK2, it understands something inherently that needs to be specifically defined when run from the scripts panel.
    The other strange thing is that 90% of the script works as expected; it's just two specific find/change arguments that seem to get skipped.
    If I can figure out what is going on, I will post here, in case someone in the future runs across a similar problem.

  • Help required - running a Java program from the command line

    Hi,
    I have a small non-graphical Java application, packaged into a Jar file. My program relies on classes in another (external) Jar file.
    When I run the application from the IDE, everything works fine. However, when I try to run the application from the command line, I keep getting a NoClassDefFoundError for classes in the external jar.
    Both the application jar file and the external jar file are in my root directory (C:\).
    My command line call is as follows:
    java -cp c:MyExternalLib.jar -jar MyApp.jar
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Running the Archiving actions through the Command Line

    Hi,
    I am not able to import and export archives using command line tools. I want to directly transfer the archive and don’t want to use a shared location. I have created the scripts that I need to run. For that I have created a sequence of steps that needs to be followed. I have mentioned the steps and the command file that I run for each step.
    1)     Created a target archive on the target server and set the IsTargetable
    <?hda version="10.1.3.3.3 (080807)" jcharset=UTF8 encoding=utf-8?>
    @Properties LocalData
    IdcService=ADD_ARCHIVE
    IDC_Name=CS98310
    aArchiveName=TargetArchive
    aIsTargetable=1
    aArchiveDescription=This is an target archive
    aCopyWebDocuments=1
    @end
    2)     Created a source archive on the source server and set the target archive for this source archive as the target archive created in step 1.
    <?hda version="10.1.3.3.3 (080807)" jcharset=UTF8 encoding=utf-8?>
    @Properties LocalData
    IdcService=ADD_ARCHIVE
    IDC_Name=idc
    aArchiveName=SourceArchive
    aArchiveDescription=This is an source archive
    aCopyWebDocuments=1
    aTargetArchive=CS98310/TargetArchive
    aIsTargetable=0
    aExportQuery=Standard Query     ValuePanel      UseExportDate 0     AllowExportPublished 0     AllRevisions 1     LatestRevisions 0     NotLatestRevisions 0     MostRecentMatching 0     CurrentIndex 0     Clauses dDocName:sqlEq: 20     CustomQuery dDocName%=%'20'     IsCustom 0
    aIsAutomatedTransfer=0
    @end
    3)     Create a query for the source archive to select the content
    aExportQuery=Standard Query     ValuePanel      UseExportDate 0     AllowExportPublished 0     AllRevisions 1     LatestRevisions 0     NotLatestRevisions 0     MostRecentMatching 0     CurrentIndex 0     Clauses dDocName:sqlEq:20     CustomQuery dDocName%=%'20'     IsCustom 0
    (This is added in the previous step)
    4)     Export the source archive on the source server
    @Properties LocalData
    IdcService=EXPORT_ARCHIVE
    aArchiveName=SourceArchive
    IDC_Name=idc
    dataSource=RevisionIDs
    @end
    5)     Transfer the source archive to the target archive from the source server
    @Properties LocalData
    IdcService=TRANSFER_ARCHIVE
    aArchiveName=SourceArchive
    IDC_Name=idc
    @end
    6)     Import the target archive on the target server
    @Properties LocalData
    IdcService=IMPORT_ARCHIVE
    aArchiveName=TargetArchive
    IDC_Name=idc
    aImportDocuments=true
    @end
    The issue comes while creating the archive. I am not able to set the parameters “aIsTargetable” for the target archive and “aExportQuery and aTargetArchive” for the source archive.
    Now I create the archive with the archiver utility and tried running the commands (from step 3), but still it fails in the transfer command. The error comes that “aTargetArchive” parameter cannot be found. Now if I do the entire process through the Archiver Tool, its works fine and I am able to view the documents on the target server. I am not able to understand the reason. Is there a problem in the Command Files?
    Also I want to check if I can automate it without deleting the batch files and their associated content file.
    Thanks,
    Noel

  • Error while running the Discoverer report from the command line.

    Hi All,
    I've to run a discoverer report from command line and export the results in xls/html on to my local machine. This report I've to run it as batch and scheduled it.
    I have a parameterized worksheet and this has to be run from command line specifying the parameter value I wanted to run the report for. I do not get any results. Here is the command line I am using.
    dis51usr /connect user/password@database /opendb "TIMS-PCJ status Report" /sheet "TIMS observation status report (based on performed date)" /parameter "Test Number" '40351' /parameter "From Date" '05-MAY-2008' /parameter "To Date" '06-MAY-2008' /export HTML "C:\DISCOVERER_REPORT_SCHEDULING\DIS_OUTPUT\PCJStOutputinHTML123"
    I even added the TO_DATE conversion for the parameters and also gave the format of the date as 'DD_MON_YYYY'.
    Discoverer Desktop opened up, logged in and gets terminated saying 'Oracle Discoverer Desktop has encountered a problem and need to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
    Please anyone reply me.
    Regards & Thanks,
    P. Gayathri Devi

    Hi Gayathri,
    Try changing your parameter names to be a single word. (Change "Test Number" to Test_Number).
    Does the report run fine when run through Desktop for the same parameter values? Which version of Discoverer are you using?
    Thanks.

    The Test project jar is created as ADF Library JAR File with Model.jpr as the dependent project. This takes care of project class dependencies
    All the adf library dependencies are added to the manifest file of the Test Project jar referring to a location lib/ in the jar file directory.
    I tried creating the ApplicationModule using both Configuration class (Configuration.createRootApplicationModule) as well as using the JDBC Connection String but both fail when I run the test cases independently from jmeter.
    Anybody came across such an error? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Sapna

    Hi Timo,
    Im using JDev version 11.1.1.6.0.
    I checked the class path on the jdev console. All the library references are mentioned in the manifest.mf classpath of the test project like below:
    Manifest-Version: 1.0
    Class-Path: lib/identitystore.jar
    lib/adfm.jar
    lib/groovy-all-1.6.3.jar
    lib/adftransactionsdt.jar
    lib/adf-dt-at-rt.jar
    lib/adfdt_common.jar
    lib/adflibrary.jar
    lib/xmlparserv2.jar
    lib/db-ca.jar
    lib/jdev-cm.jar
    lib/ojmisc.jar
    lib/commons-el.jar
    lib/jsp-el-api.jar
    etc...
    So I expect the library references should be resolved looking at the manifest file.
    Another set of entries that I see in the jdev classpath are related to the Model project which is under test.
    -classpath
    D:\CurrentProject_1\16_7_2013_3pm\11_7_2013\.adf;
    D:\CurrentProject_1\16_7_2013_3pm\11_7_2013\Model\classes;
    How do I put these entries into my class path? Will it be sufficient if I add the Model.jar into my test project classpath?
    Thanks,
    Sapna

  • Problem with running a java program from the command line

    I have this code:
    package pkg;
    import jxl.*;
    import java.io.File;
    public class TestClass {
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              try{
                   Workbook book = Workbook.getWorkbook(new File("d:/testWorkspace/excFile.xls"));
                   Sheet sheet = book.getSheet(0);
                   String s=sheet.getCell(4, 2).getContents();
                   System.out.println(s);
              }catch (Exception e){System.err.println(e);}
    }I've wrote it in Eclipse, added jxl.jar to the buildpath, and it works fine.
    Then I tried to run it from the command line and I did it like this:
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp \jxl.jar pkg.TestClassThe result was:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: pkg/TestClass
    Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: pkg.TestClass
    ...but the file TestClass.class DOES exist in the folder d:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin\pkg\ and the file jxl.jar IS on the root of drive D (like I already wrote, it worked fine inside the Eclipse).
    So, my question is: How to run this code from the command line?
    I have no idea what went wrong.
    Can someone help me, please?

    The current directory is not implied in the classpath.
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp .;d:\ pkg.TestClassor
    D:\testWorkspace\testProject\bin> java -cp .;d:\jxl.jar pkg.TestClassI always forget which is right since I never work with jars...

  • Testing for more than one command line argument

    Ok im writing a client to access a given server. What i want to happen is to say that if you enter one argument at the command line do this code- if you enter more than one do something else. I cant seem think of how to do this though-ive tried testing if args > 0 but it wont let me do that . Here is the code so far:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    class Whereis2
       public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception
          int c;
          //whois.geektools.com
          Socket s = new Socket("dante.net.dcs.hull.ac.uk",43);
          InputStream in = s.getInputStream();
          OutputStream out = s.getOutputStream();
            String str = args[0] + "\r\n" ;
             // convert string to bytes, unicode to ASCII
             byte buf[] = str.getBytes();
             // send data to server
             out.write(buf) ;
          while ((c = in.read()) != -1)
         System.out.print ((char) c);
          s.close();
    } Basically i want the code written above to happen is you put in one argument-ie Whereis2 Paul for example. But if i put in Whereis2 Paul "In a meeting" I want it to update the server. Can anyone help me to do this?
    Thanks a lot

    And by the way:
    "Where is Paul" (notice the quotation marks) is a single argument with spaces in it.
    Where is Paul (no quotation marks) is three arguments, no spaces.
    PS. Why are you throwing Exception?

  • Running Mac apps from the Unix command line

    I hope I don't offend Mac lovers with this question, but as a total Mac newbie, I find Finder cumbersome. This may change as I learn all the features and keyboard shortcuts. but I don't think so. I've been playing with computers for 40 years and Unix for 30 and I know what I like. I like a command line interface, and prefer to avoid the point and squint interface to the extent possible.
    I'd prefer to run everything from the shell, and not finder. So to run safari, I'd like to do something intuitive (to me, at least) like type ...
    bash# safari
    ... instead of marching around in Finder or using the dock and the mouse.
    Can any of you Mac hackers give an old Unix hacker a pointer to a clue?

    Yes, I'm way too cheap to buy the book. I can't imagine how much I've saved over the years, always being way too cheap to buy the book. Easily enough to pay for the spiffy new computer.
    No Windoze experience? You may think you do, but really, you don't know how lucky you are. My Vaxen ran 4.1 BSD though 4.3 BSD. I've played with a lot of flavors of unix. My favorite flavor in recent years has been FreeBSD, so I began paying close attention to the Mac since OS X.
    X11 and Xcode were the first things I installed. I've been poking around, reading the docs, and getting a better handle on it all. I've only scratched the surface of the stuff on your pages, and it's been most helpful. There's good stuff there for unix newbies too.
    If it were not for Jerry Garcia, I probably never would have had the stones to open my mouth in front of a microphone.

    Hello Experts,

    Can we run discoverer 10g report (stored in database) from server location / unix command line? Is there any command?
    Please assist. Thank you.

    Hi Tamir,
    Can you please mention from where we have to execute/run these commands? After setting enviornmental variable, are these commands run from any location or we have to go to particular server location and then execute (ex. from directory BI or else).
    Thank you.
