[SOLVED] Suppress libva/vaapi output

I specified vaapi as the video driver for MPlayer, and every time it plays, it spits out output from libva about loading the VA-API driver.
Is there a way to suppress this output?  I tried the "-really-quiet" option, and that hid everything else but this output.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I've been busy working on stuff for the end of my school semester.
I meant to ask if there was any way it could be done through configuration options or actual parameters, since I also want youtube-viewer to not spit out all the libva info.
Your method works, mar04, but I guess I would have to make an alias for mplayer.  I want to really be sure there is no cleaner way before I look into doing that.
Is there a compilation option for libva that might allow me to suppress its output?

this Problem is driving me crazy. On my X220t Laptop i am trying to get the vaapi in vlc working.

Video acceleration with mplayer is working fine, but with vlc is not. But i want to use vlc
When i activate the GPU acceleration in the codecs tab the video becomes very choppy an slow. It's like one frame every 2-4 seconds. Unwatchable.
I've tried different Versions from 1.1.x to 2.x and its the same every time. Don't get me wrong without vaapi the video ist smooth but my cpu usage is around 50%. I want to bring it down to save some power when i'm on battery.
    Thanks for your help

I haven't been able to get vaapi working with VLC yet on my X220, but I have found if you use Compiz (or add a clutter environment variable if you use the Gnome 3 shell), the video output is pretty good in VLC.  I am using VLC successfully in Arch XFCE, Fedora 16 Gnome, and Mageia 1 KDE.

  • Leading zeroes are being suppressed in excel output

I have a template that prints our item number field. This field is alpha-numeric, but sometimes it is all numeric with leading zeroes. I have it defined as a text field in my template. It prints correctly (with the leading zeroes) in the PDF output, but it suppresses the leading zeros in the excel output. Is there any way to stop it from doing this - I want it to be a text field.

Thanks. That sort of works. In the excel output, it is truncating the field after the first 4 digits even though the length is defined as 'unlimited'. In the PDF output, it prints the double quotes around the field.

  • [solved]cat with colored output?

just wondering if there is a app like cat, that outputs a file, but with vim/emacs' highlight and line numbering. (or some short of hack)
Why? well, I'm playing around with some C++ and I have multiple little files that I'd like to see on the shell before/after I run g++, and something like that would be quite useful.

  • [SOLVED] Can't send output to external monitor

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop which I sometimes use to give presentations at my school. Last time, in mid october, it worked perfectly, but now my laptop and the digital projector seem to ignore each other. The only difference between last time and now is that I've updated the system.
This is output of xrandr -q:
    $ xrandr -q
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    LVDS connected 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm
    1280x800 61.0*+
It says that VGA-0 is disconnected, which isn't the case. I've tried pressing Fn+CTR/LCD but it doesn't make any difference.
Can anyone tell me if I am missing something? What's wrong? Why doesn't it work now if it worked fine just over a month ago? Is this a problem with the new X server?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'd really appreaciate any help. I wouldn't like my students to get the idea that Linux is unreliable (or maybe that I'm just not smart enough).
    Cheers

  • SOLVED: Getting an Input/Output error when accessing certain files

My system started failing a few days ago because of sudden Input/Output errors when trying to access certain files. It was running fine until various applications started crashing like for example Pidgin (in retrospect probably because of DBus crashing). I decided to reboot and now can't login anymore because the DBus module fails to load which in turn means that HAL doesn't load either and so I can't use my keyboard to login.
The error message I get from DBus is that it can't access the file /etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.conf because of an Input/Output error. I tried to fix/see what was wrong using the arch livecd. Because I thought my problem had to do with a pacman update that had failed before I'd rebooted, I updated my system and I noticed that when pacman tried to access other files it came back with the same error message. The files seemed pretty random, one of them was fakeroot.conf and then several library files like libfaad (sorry this is kind of vague but I'm away from home right now and can't go online very often so I'm writing this from memory).
I'm guessing its a hard drive problem because checking the filesystem for errors came back with nothing. I was just wondering whether anyone had any other ideas before I go and reinstall. I'm going back home tomorrow so I'll be able to follow any advice/reinstall then.

    UPDATE
It seems to be fixed! The second run of e2fsck fixed some more issues and the files that were causing the problems earlier seemed to have bad inodes. Boots fine now and I can get into my system. I checked and I still have a reasonable amount of free space so I don't think that was the reason ... I have no idea how the filesystem got so corrupted out of nowhere.
A few things are different, for example, it asked me to unlock the keyring and I couldn't mount my external encrypted drive anymore and had to do it manually with cryptsetup. e2fsck made quite a few changes so I imagine it's due to that. Shouldn't be to hard to fix though.
    Thanks for your help!

  • [SOLVED] No HTML5 Audio output in Firefox

Hi folks, it seems I don't have any HTML5 audio output within Firefox and was hoping I could get some advice. Here's a run down of the situation:
    Everything is unmuted in alsamixer.
Audio works through ALSA with every other application I've tried such as moc, vlc, mplayer etc.
I have an .asoundrc file which correctly sets the default and an alias for another card. I use it to switch audio when using mplayer sometimes.
I've used various HTML5 test pages that report audio tag and and playback is working.
Firebug console never reports any errors when trying to play audio within a page.
I've done a fair bit of searching but the documented solution is almost always to setup an .asoundrc config file, but I already have one.

  • [SOLVED] weird beagle-status output?

my system's gears were grinding a little more than usual, and while idle, i noted that beagle was using a tad more resources than it should. i checked beagle-status and found the following:

  • [SOLVED]Need to parse output data

I have a program that outputs data to the console in this format:
    [1] banana
    [2] orange
    [7] apple
    [17] grape
    [42] strawberry
I would like to strip this output and only get the values for [2] and [17]. So my output would be:
    orange
    grape
My first idea was to pipe the output to grep and then possibly use sed to strip the preceding numbers and brackets. What is the recommended way to do this and why? Is there a better suited utility that I'm not aware of?

The idea to use sed was correct, nadman10. You should have googled
    remove "square brackets" sed
and you would have found out the answer yourself: http://www.unix.com/showthread.php?t=159143
The slightly tricky part with the square brackets is that they have special meaning, so you have to escape them i.e. precede them with '\'.

  • [SOLVED] Stop "foreign" error output from shell script

    Hello,
I have just migrated from TrueCrypt to VeraCrypt (without issues by the way), but I have a problem with a script that I wrote.
This script is basically a shortcut for mounting a VeraCrypt volume and opening it with Dolphin; it keeps a "question" open at the command line, which, when answered with 'y', will unmount the volume.
Here is the important part of the script:
    /usr/bin/veracrypt "$VERACRYPT" "$MOUNTDIR"
    /usr/bin/dolphin "$MOUNTDIR"
echo "Unmount VeraCrypt volume now [y/n]?"
    read ANSWER
    if [ "$ANSWER" = "y" ]
    then
    /usr/bin/veracrypt -d "$VERACRYPT"
    fi
    exit 0
As you can see, it's utterly simple. My problem now is, that some system message shows up when running the command, and it somehow hides my "question":
    "/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/dm_2d0" has new interfaces: ("org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Block", "org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Filesystem")
    "/org/freedesktop/UDisks2/block_devices/dm_2d0" has new interfaces: ("org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Block", "org.freedesktop.UDisks2.Filesystem")
I thought it was veracrypt or Dolphin related, and I tried adding "2> /dev/null" at the end of those commands, but it appears that this message comes from somewhere else.
Is there a way to suppress these "foreign" messages? Why does my "question" not show up anymore at all?
    Thanks,
    DrTebi
Last edited by drtebi (2015-02-02 23:41:39)

    That worked, thanks!
I have to assume that veracrypt caused the "new interfaces" message then?
I didn't try the redirecting to stdout at first because I thought if I do that, I would not get my "question" -- but that was of course wrong, since I am not redirecting the "read" command.
    Thanks for the help.

It seems your sync database got messed up somehow, especially based on your other post with issues doing a pacman -Syu. I suspect the advice to run pacman -Syy (or yaourt -Syy) should fix this problem as well.

There are some services that have

    dbus.service, nscd.service, lm_sensors.service, svnserve.service.
Should I do anything about these errors? syslog.target doesn't seem to exist at all ...

    I get
    $ systemctl --all --no-pager | grep -i error
    auditd.service error inactive dead auditd.service
    plymouth-quit-wait.service error inactive dead plymouth-quit-wait.service
    plymouth-start.service error inactive dead plymouth-start.service
    syslog.target error inactive dead syslog.target
If you boot to a display manager, I think you don't get the error for that one because enabling the relevant service sets up a symbolic link. For example:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Aws 26 2012 /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service -> /etc/systemd/system/kdm.service
I remember reading complaints that systemd hard-coded dependencies on distro-specific stuff and that it shouldn't. (This was about the plymouth failures.) I tend to agree it is badly behaved in this respect. (As I've said before, I find the logging the biggest downside with systemd. It is the only thing which really bothers me and this, like journal, is part of that.) However, I believe it is harmless.
Does anybody know what audit is good for or what the syslog.target is important for? I actually use syslog-ng and I still get this error.
I take it that "masking" just involves the standard symlinking to /dev/null? I should probably do that for plymouth - the lack of a splash screen should not be highlighted as a boot error! I'd like to know more about the others, though...
