[Solved] systemd creates autofs after unmounting /boot

After logging in, i unmount /boot, so that i can unplug the usb drive where it resides, then systemd creates this mount:
# mount | grep /boot
systemd-1 on /boot type autofs (rw,relatime,fd=26,pgrp=1,timeout=300,minproto=5,maxproto=5,direct)
Typing this hangs forever:
ls /boot
/etc/fstab
UUID=2D75-67FC /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro,nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 2
I don't really know what to make of this. Seems like a bug, given that ls hangs forever instead of showing nothing.

My bad, i really masked the mount unit. Will try again tomorrow.
EDIT:
After masking the automount unit, it looks like this:
* /boot is mounted correctly at startup
* after unmounting /boot manually, no autofs mount shows up anymore
* ls does not hang and immediatly shows nothing, as expected
# systemctl status boot.automount
● boot.automount
Loaded: masked (/dev/null)
Active: inactive (dead)
# mount | grep /boot
(No output)

  • R61 R&R won't start after "unmountable boot volume" error

    Hello all,
New user, first post - after problem, of course.
I have an R61 Thinkpad with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Has worked flawlessly for years, then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.
No problem - I re-start, hit the ThinkVantage button, then hit F11 to use the R&R hidden on a separate partition of the hard drive........I get the black screen with the big progress bar, ok, then a blue screen......then nothing.  Hangs up and sits there.  I have repeated this about 5 times now.
No problem! - I was smart enough to make an R&R CD set a while ago!  Put the primary R&R disk in the CD drive, start the machine, ThinkPad button, F12 this time to choose boot from CD.....much CD activity ensues and I once again get the black screen with the big progress bar.  It takes much longer, and I get teh blue screen - BUT - then it goes one extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" screen with the life preserver image.
Excellent, I thing - except it then hangs there.  Just sits there.  No disk activity.  No keys will do anything.
I can find no threads here or on any other forum with this particular issue.
Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks a bunch.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi jim, welcome to the forums,
Is the hard drive recognised in BIOS, was there an entry in the boot list against HDD0?
Regardless of it being shown in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reseat the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe over time it's lost contact to the mainboard socket. If you don't know how to do this you can find out at the R61 movies site.
The next thing I would do is run a hard drive diagnosis check from a bootable cd, these can be downloaded from all HDD manufacturer's websites e.g. Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test.  It may be that the drive has simply gone bad after all those years of work.
Let us know how you get on

  • [SOLVED] systemd 207, lvm2 and luks booting issue

    Hi
i'm using an encrypted lvm (luks) on my notebook.
    /boot on /dev/sda1
    lvm on    /dev/sda2
                 main-root
                 main-home
                 main-swap
since the systemd 207 upgrade i am unable to boot my system.
    this error appears at startup:
A start job is running for dev-mapper-main\x2droot.device
so i'm guessing that systemd is unable to use the encrypted lvm2, since this error is aknowledged on the
after checking some threads i tried:
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    but there was no effect.
HOOKS="base systemd autodetect block keymap encrypt lvm2 filesystems fsck vbox
some people tried suggesting downgrading to systemd 204 but i dont have any pkg file and building with abs leads to the following error
    while makepkg -s:
    ==> Starting prepare()...
    patching file src/core/swap.c
    Hunk #1 FAILED at 220.
1 out of 1 hunk FAILED -- saving rejects to file src/core/swap.c.rej
==> ERROR: A failure occured in prepare().
    Aborting...
am i supposed to remove the patches from the build? i'm not really sure and more of a beginner in this area.
Can anyone help me solve either the build or the boot issue ?
i should mention that i am only able to access my system by using chroot from an arch boot stick.
    Thank you so much.
    Kind Regards

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mk … mmon_hooks
systemd: This will install a basic systemd setup in your initramfs, and is meant to replace the 'base', 'usr', 'udev' and 'timestamp' hooks. Other hooks (like encryption) would need to be ported, and may not work as intended. As of systemd 207, this hook does not work as intended when combined with lvm2 and may break your boot. You also may wish to still include the 'base' hook (before this hook) to ensure that a rescue shell exists on your initramfs.
Have you tried keeping udev instead of replacing it with systemd hook?
    Have you tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … ck_Machine ? It has systemd 204.

after kernel loading (just before getty starts) i notice extremely high disk activity for ~20 seconds for no reason. I think that it is something related to systemd and mount services.

  • [solved] systemd services not starting at boot (or at all)

On my router, some systemd services fail to start at boot.
    The services are :
adsl (pppoe connetction on the wan interface)
shorewall (funny again for a router)
logind (brings up only tty1, and not the others with a 'timeout' error)
adsl starts fine manually after booting up
the others don't work, I have to launch shorewall with the old sysvinit rc script (and it works)
I really don't know, what happened to logind...
Last edited by scar (2012-11-30 10:20:44)

    cups: avahi client failed
adsl: timeout (ppp0 running on eth0, the service did not found eth0)
shorewall: did not work by the systemctl command, only with the old rc script
I'm not sure if there was an error with logind, but I've had only tty1, not all the others (I have not touched /etc/inittab)
since this was a very old install (but up to date), I've decided to reinstall the whole thing,
    Everything works
(But reinstalling does not solve any problem, it erases the problems...)

  • [SOLVED] systemd: create a service file that loads a kernel module

Hi, I have a daemon that I want to convert to a service unit of systemd.
The daemon tests if a module is loaded, and if not, modprobes it.
I do not want to load that module at boot up, only if the service is launched.
Is there a "proper" way to add something like RequiredModule=xxx to a service unit?
    Thanks!

Maybe simply run modprobe with ExecStartPre. The command succeeds even if the module was already loaded.

I think filesystem checks add delays (about one second for each logical volume or so), also as you know systemd is doing everything in parallel it can at the given moment of time, for example I can say you that water has already boiled, while it is still going to boil but you don't know it:

  • [SOLVED] systemd, autofs and lxdm

OK, after recently migrating rc.conf to the more 'systemd' structure, but still using init I figured I'd give systemd another shot, and herein lies my problem.
According to the wiki there should already be units available for various DMs, though i only have xdm available. I've copied and modified the copied version for lxdm (well, not strictly correctly, I've modified it to start xfce the same way that my "old" style does, with ck-launch) but I just get dumped to a root desktop (which I can't log out of). What I want is the lxdm login. I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of stuff I've forgotten since I set this up, so how do I get systemd to launch lxdm to a login screen.
Second. I'm getting autofs errors at boot, and automounting isn't available.
Google has helped me not one jot (either lousy googling or lousy forum thread titles, not sure which) and I need to fix this too.
Not looking for a verbatim answer. Rather looking for links where I can get the why's and wherefore's. The Arch systemd wiki doesn't cover this (it assumed units present which are not).
I've installed the arch units already. Any pointers would be appreciated.

lxdm package from Community contains usr/lib/systemd/system/lxdm.service
    please check with
    pacman -Ql lxdm
    But if you can't
    systemctl enable lxdm.service
you can try manually symlink it
    ln -s '/usr/lib/systemd/system/lxdm.service' '/etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service'
btw. in AUR pkgbuilds there are no lxdm.service at the moment, so you neet to copy it from community source files (best way)

Creating a Mavericks USB boot drive after the horse has bolted.  Can I create a bootable USB drive from my iMac after installing Mavericks without saving the Install OS X Mavericks.app file?  Do I need to re- download the whole 5.29 Gb from the App Store again?  My problem is my 4Gb/month allowance on a 12 month contract.  I cannot purchase a data block from my ISP and although my speed is theoretically slowed to 64k after reaching my 4Gb, it actually ceases to download in reality.

HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X  Mavericks.app"; see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

  • [SOLVED] systemd boot fails - Removable on fstab

Just converted to the dark (systemd) side.
Very straight forward, simple and easy enough.
I have one problem with boot process.
I have three usb devices that i use frequently, below is my fstab
    # Removable Media
    UUID=6e4bc1aa-3414-48b9-9598-5eedfaadbe2b /media/FreeAgent1 ext4 defaults,user 0 0

    UUID=0590bbe0-d098-4f81-a9c7-c72654aa54a5 /media/Sandisk ext4 defaults,user 0 0
USB devices at the moment arent on the pc.
With init process, everything was fine.
    Boot process gave me prompt.
With systemd, my archlinux box doesnt boot (at all)
    http://ebalaskas.gr/img/systemd_removeable.png
    Reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146982 & http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/s … 06292.html
i get the feeling that perhaps is a bug.
    But i am not sure.
The emergency mode (^D) doesnt work either - keyboard seemed dead.
Used old transitional init=/bin/sh to comment out the removable devices from my fstab

    That dont even make sense.
Thank you all for your answers but PLZ ... try to focus on the actual problem that systemd is failing to boot and not to fstab !
btw from my first post i 've already mentioned that i commented out these entries just to boot with systemd.
what is the problem with using nofail or noauto,x-systemd.automount? systemd does the right thing here, it tries to mount the device on boot and waits for it - it's just that the timeout is very long (afaik 90 seconds).
the only reason this worked with initscripts is that afaik initscripts just tries to mount the device and won't wait for it if it isn't there, but instead just fails immediately. While this worked, it was still the wrong approach. You should have added noauto or nofail in the first place.

The problem I have with my DV9700 is it will no longer boot.  It was working great, but the other night, I had to do a hard re-boot, and then it failed to start with a blue screen with "Unmountable Boot Volume".  This is with the original Vista 64 bit Home Premium version.  I chose the option "Self Recovery" but it just finishes up sitting there continually scanning for something?
The hard drive is the original factory installed setup.  My question is, how do I get my machine back up and running please?  I have a Windows Vista Backup that would run each week to an external 2TB USB drive, but I am guessing that this will not recreate an exact image of my computers state?  I would also need to have Vista running to use the backup?  Some years ago (2010), I created a complete backup to about 20 DVD's, but I am not sure how to use them as they are for recovery I think?
It looks like I need to buy a new hard drive but how do I go about using the backups I have to install to a new drive?  Also, what is the largest hard drive I can use?  Should I buy a SSD drive?  I wanted at least a 1TB primary drive.  Fry's Electronics has a Hybrid drive where the disk cache is solid state making it more affordable.  I was thiking of getting one of these?
I would like to use my old original drive as a secondary drive if it is even possible to access its files.  I have ordered a SATA caddy so I can mount it into the unused drive bay of the DV9700.
Anyway, I would truly appreciate any help please?
    Thanks a million!!!

    Hi mtrappett,
Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to assist you.
I grasp that  after restarting the notebook you got the error" unmountable Boot Volume" and a blue screen.  Here is a link to a document on Troubleshooting Error Messages on a Blue Screen that may Occur During Startup or Boot.  For your convenience I am also providing the HP Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 Entertainment PCs Maintenance and Service Guide. Please note page 23, item 23 for a list of recommended hard drives.  I hope you find these useful.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot startup properly after recent pacman -Syu

I'm having a bit of trouble starting up my system after a recent upgrade (6-6-13).  I ran into some issues beforehand with the error
    filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem
    filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem
but resolved that by following the steps highlighted on the recent news section on the home page.  I use rEFInd and I get the normal boot menu and everything seems normal, but I get this message when loading up the OS
    [FAILED] Failed to mount /boot.
See 'systemctl status boot.mount' for details.
[DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File Systems.
So I run the command mentioned above and get this
    boot.mount - /boot
    Loaded: loaded (/etc/fstab)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2013-06-07 19:30:39 CDT; 2 min 0s ago

I'm still new and getting used to this but it looks like my filesystem is not loading properly (obviously) and I do not know how to resolve my issue.  Any help?  You guys were great helping with my install issues.

I'm happy to say that I was able to successfully boot thanks to some research into the Arch boot sequence and adding MODULES="vfat" to my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf!  I ran
    mkinitcpio -p linux
to create the initramfs-linux.img and initramfs-linux-fallback.img in my /boot directory.  I tried to reboot, however it did not work because I did not have what rEFInd needed to boot successfully.  I then ran
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/vmlinuz-arch.efi
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux.img /boot/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img /boot/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch-fallback.img
to place the images and the kernel in my rEFInd directory so that rEFInd could find those things in order to boot successfully.  So basically I had the right files in the wrong place!
Anyways, thanks for all the help everyone!  The Arch community is great when noobs like me get stuck!
One more small question from me... I'm supposed to mark the topic as SOLVED when it is in fact solved.  How do I change the title of this topic?  Thanks

  • HP DV7-7338ea Windows 8 Unmountable Boot Volume BSOD

The product concerned here is a HP DV7-7338ea with operating system Windows 8. I have been using it for just under 11 months and bought it with Windows 8 installed.
    Problem descrpition:
I recently installed a new sound update for my laptop. I was promted to restart and once that happened, I recieved a BSOD with the error message: unmountable boot volume. When that happens, it restarts and goes into "preparing automatic repair" mood after which the screen goes black and the windows cursor shows and then that's it. I am left with no options or anything. I have tried pressing F11 on start up and then it says "please wait" and goes back to the same black screen. I have left it on for over an hour but it just remains there until my computr switches itself off for overheating (this has never happened before). I haven't recently installed any thing new apart from the HP update. Please help as I do not know what to do now. I have not backed up my files yet and they are too important for me to loose.  Thanks
    Update:
I ran a system check and it said the Hard Drive Short DST failed. Does this mean I have lost my files? The laptop had been operating very well until this latest HP update which may have corrupted my hard drive.
    This question was solved.

A harddisk short DST fail means that either your harddrive is failing or have failed alltogether.
If you're still under warranty, contact your retailer or local HP store and get a replacement harddrive that you can switch yourself or have it sent in for service.
If you have an IT knowledgeable friend you might be able to salvage some of the data on the computer.
You can try removing the harddrive frmo your computer and connecting it to his.
Please let me know how it works.

  • Hp Blue Screen sad face Unmountable Boot Volume and Automatic reoair loop error

Someone Please help.I have an hp laptop that refuses to work. The screen stays on the automatic repair screen until it fades to black.I have tried to do a system recovery with f11, but all it does is bring up the blue screen with a sad face for a few seconds before resetting back to the auto repair screen again. Before resetting, it said that I had an unmountable boot volumeon the blue screen.(had to take picture because it cuts off before showing me the full error message.)
    here are my computer specs:
    Hp pavilion g7-2269wm
    AMD Qaud-Core A8-4500M Accelerated Processor
    500BG Hard Drive
    6144MB DDR3 SDRAM
Windows 8(Don't remember if i upgraded to windows 8.1 before problem)
Also purchased hp recovery cds, but even after trying to boot from recovery cd, it stays on a black screen.

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance  you have a 500GB hdd so you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.
