[SOLVED] Unable to startx as user

Hey all,
I just installed Arch for the first time this weekend, and I'm trying to get to where I can run X reliably. Here's where I'm at:
When I login as root, and run startx, it works as expected. It launches xterm with three little windows, my mouse works, everything seems fine.
The output is: http://pastie.org/private/0ej2tfss5p0tdjtaqdzhhq
And /var/log/Xorg.0.log: http://pastie.org/private/wrulq3tbf9kmnshtrotsg
When I login as my user and then run it, it doesn't work. The screen flickers, and then X crashes before I see anything. Redirecting the output to a file isn't working, and hoarks my terminal, so here's the only output line that looks interesting:
xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
And ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log: http://pastie.org/private/0aacsqquwojcruobulrsow
It seems like a permissions issue, but I don't want to just start messing around without understanding a bit better. Also, I am able to adjust the backlight manually with calls to setpci. Trying to run xrandr with any parameters just yields 'Can't open display'. (Regardless of user)
/etc/X11/xorg.conf: http://pastie.org/private/bmwjdjsm20hccyp8asixsa
I'm on a Lenovo IdeaPad that I picked up at a garage sale, it was running Windows XP just fine previously. Output of lspci -k: http://pastie.org/private/blqm5eannk0wyie84wyma
I've run pacman -Syu today, everything is up to date. I installed the intel video driver, as recommended in the wiki. I've tried a few different things that I've found in similar posts, but nothing has worked. I haven't been able to find anyone else with the exact same problem.
I tried to do as much as I knew how on my own, and I'm feeling stuck now. Has anyone seen this before?

You said you tried "running" Xorg.wrap but did you also set up /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config? Look at "man Xorg.wrap".
The man page said that the wrapper file could be used to override options, but not that it was required, so I didn't set one up initially. When you asked about it, I tried setting one up that just specifies 'anybody' for the 'allowed_users' key. The error remained.
Are you using a custom kernel?
I shouldn't be...I just used the latest .iso and installed the base system, plus the video driver, X, etc.
Another thing to try is using a DM and seeing if that works as that would also indicate a permission issue.
I wasn't planning on installing a DM, but I'll try it and see if it works and then post a report.
From my look at the forums, running chmod u+s on /usr/bin/xorg seems to do the trick for both errors you've pointed out (which resolves the setuid issue). Before changing the permissions though, run a ls -l on the file to show us the current permissions.
Output of ls -l /usr/bin/X*: https://gist.github.com/drautb/7a76081005e49fec91d6
Then I ran chmod u+s /usr/bin/Xorg. New ls output: https://gist.github.com/drautb/22f70334899d93266655
The error remained, so I tried it again after chmod u+s /usr/bin/Xorg.bin too. https://gist.github.com/drautb/190b2ca26b98e8151a19
The screen goes dark. I tried Ctrl+alt+bkspc, and a couple of other shortcuts, but the screen stays dark. I end up just rebooting.
I noticed another distinction that I hadn't mentioned yet: startx works only if I actually login to the system as root. If I login as my user, and then do sudo startx, I get the blank screen too.

For some reason, im unable to add/remove users in Mountain Lion server. The + and - are greyed out. It seems like something is wrong with the permissons because it looks like it cant write the the Ldav3 file (although that may be speculation). Does anyone have any advice for me? I URGENTLY need to add users.
Maybe theres a way to restore default permssions for the boot drive (if that in fact is the issue). Hopefully there is a way that I can fix this while leaving all users, groups, their permissions and shares intact.

Since it's far and away the most common cause of problems with OS X Server and with distributed authentication (Open Directory is entirely based on network encryption and digital certificates and on responses from your local DNS server(s)), verify your local DNS configuration is working and requires no changes with the following Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) harmless, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
sudo requires an administrative password.  You might get a one-time warning about the sudo, and that can safely be ignored.  The command will display some details, and indicate whether the local configuration appears valid and no changes are required, or further diagnostics for (most) common errors that can arise.

All the issues you guys are talking about have been reported in beta stage of these new drivers. I would say none of them has been fixed yet. The only solution for now is to use previous drivers which work fine or use some modified drivers which fixes some issues, but not all. Your choice.

  • How to solve the issue "CUV check user equivalence failed" ?

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 VMs (rac1 and rac2) whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6 in VMPlayer according to the website http://appsdbaworkshop.blogspot.com/2011/10/11gr2-rac-on-linux-56-using-vmware.html
In order to install Grid Infrastructure, we need to run Cluster Utility Verification (CUV) at first by running the cammand below:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid]$ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose
    Its output:
Performing pre-checks for cluster services setup
Check: User equivalence for user “ora11g”
    Node Comment
    rac1 failed
    rac2 failed
Result: PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user “ora11g”
    ERROR:

    Verification cannot proceed
Pre-check for cluster services setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
As you see above, check user equivalence failed. I have run the 4 commands to fix this error as below:
    [ora11g@rac1 /]$ ssh-keygen
    Its output:
    Generating public/private rsa key pair.
Enter file in which to save the key (/home/grid/.ssh/id_rsa):

    Enter same passphrase again:

    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ cat *pub >>authorized_keys
    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ ssh rac1
    Its output:

    [ora11g@rac1 .ssh]$ ssh rac1-priv
    Its output:

    RSA key fingerprint is 9d:ae:51:7c:72:81:07:37:31:92:f1:c8:90:bc:52:55.

After run the 4 commands above, I run the command below again:
    [ora11g@rac1 grid]$ ./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose
    Its output is the same:
PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user “ora11g”
    ERROR:
User equivalence unavailable on all the specified nodes
    Verification cannot proceed
I think the problem is "Broken pipe" and ssh cannot write authorized_keys to the machines.
    My question is:
Do any folk understand how to solve the issue CUV "check user equivalence failed" for 2 VMs ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
I have installed Grid Infrastructure a few times. Each time, on step 7 of 9, the installer fixes and checks 2 machines correctly. The entire installation has 3 parts as below:
    1) Install Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster
    2) Execute Root Scripts for Install Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster (script is root.sh)
    3) Configure Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster that includes NCA, ASMCA, PICA and CVU.
Each time, on step 8 of 9, the Installer installs Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster successfully that includes "Prepare, Copy files, Link binaries, Setup files and Perform remote operations".
But when the Installer get to part 3 CVU, it fails and then the Database cannot be installed.
Deinstall Grid is a very complicated process to do. Because of this reason, we need to run CVU at first to make sure everything is correct for 2 machines before install Grid.
Even we ignore "user equivalence (ssh)", we don't know whether other items can be passed or not because CVU cannot proceed to check the machines.
    My question is:
How to have the script "runcluvfy.sh" continue to check the machines while confronting "user equivalence failed" ?

  • ORA-01654: unable to extend index user.index_x by 16 in tablespace tablespa

    Hi all,
I get the error message : ORA-01654: unable to extend index user.index_x by 16 in tablespace tablespace_t after an insert into table table_x(having the index index_x ).
Could you please help me ? Should I add new datafile? Is there any other solution
I have get this message before, I have added new datafile to this tablespace,
ALTER TABLESPACE tablespace_t ADD DATAFILE 'C:\APP\...\ORADATA\MABASE\S_TAB_user02.DBF' SIZE 500M
    AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 100M MAX SIZE 1000M;
         TABLESPACE_NAME     ALLOUE     OCCUPE     LIBRE
    1     tablespace_t     5720     5421     297

i think that would work.. And also if the error still persists then you have to tune the queries which are cost effective..For that you have to wait until you get the same error after addition of the datafile..Cheers!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
Have you configured the client to only use user authentication for 802.1X? If so, I would like to inform you that this is expected when you configure the 802.1X to user only authentication.
Here is the process that is followed.
    1. As soon as client is connected to the network the Authenticator (switch) periodically sends EAP request packet/frame to the client/supplicant.
    2. The client has to respond back with an identify and if its configured only for User authentication then it will send blank identity.
    3. The Authenticator cannot validate and the authentication would fail.
    4. Windows client is configured for a block time of 20 min. So, once the authentication fails the NIC card will go in block time for 20 min until there is a change in credentials. So, even if the authenticatior(swithch) is periodically sending EAP request
    it will just ignore them
    5. You will see event 15506 after the event 15514.
Here’s the technet that you we can refer for the reason code : Reason: 0x50001 that we see in the event 15514

    Hello Thomas,
It looks like a Solaris issue. Check if the home directory
/home is reserved in the Solaris configuration.
Check if this fix the problem please perform the following steps:
    1. modify /etc/auto_master file to change the entry for '/home' to say
       '/autohome' instead
    2. reboot
    3. rmdir /home
    4. ln -s /export/home /home (make sure /export/home exists)
Also you could create soladm manually in advance.
    Hope this helps,
