[SOLVED]USB flash drive no longer showing up in /dev

My USB flash drives are no longer showing up in /dev. I also don't see them in /dev/disks/... either. Dmesg outputs:
[731969.826862] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd
Any ideas on where to start?

  • USB Flash Drive no longer shows on Desktop, it does appear in disk utility. I recently upgraded to 10.8 from 10.6 on both iMac and Macbook and the drive does the same on both.

I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have had only minor issues with some software but I plugged in a USB flash drive and went to format it, it now appears only in disk utility and not on the desktop. I have tried restarting and reseting with the drive in and out, I tried it into my macbook and it does exactly the same there. I can't do anything in Disk Utility so can't access it in any way and it says errors if I try to eject it from DU. I'm not normally stumped but I can't figure this out at all. I'm hoping that someone here could give me an idea that I haven't thought of as it's a large Flash Drive and I really would like to keep using it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If it has the same (bad) behavior on two different systems then there is a very good chance that the  drive is toast.
BTW you'll get better response to your questions if the question actually reflects the problem you are having. In this case it would have been better to say you couldn't access the drive rather then that it doesn't show on the desktop.
    regards

  • [Solved]USB Flash Drive inaccessible.

    Hi there.
I have installed Arch Linux on my Sony laptop and I have configured it so that most stuff works. The only problem I'm facing now, is that my USB Flash Drive won't show up when I plug it in. I have tried restarting ehci service, but it does not solve anything. I had this problem many years ago with another computer running Linux, but I can't remember how it got solved. Connecting a USB-mouse works perfectly but not a flash drive. The drive is a FAT32 formatted Kingston.
    This is my dmesg log:

Have you tried to manually mount it? To see if it is a PCManFM issue. Also, have you checked this:

    Hi.
I tried installing gvfs, apparently I uninstalled it for some reason before.   But it did not help mounting the flash drive. So I tried mounting it manually and it worked (Yaay!). But it complained that my flash drive was not mentioned in fstab. So I looked in fstab and the only ones listed is my root partion "/" and "/home". So how do I add USB mounting to fstab? I'm a little bit confused.
And one off-topic question: Shouldn't my "/var" partion also be mentioned in fstab?
    Thanks for helping me
Edit: This is how fstab looks right now

  • Installed itunes - usb flash drive no longer recognized

    hi,
I installed itunes, loaded up the ipod with music, and now my computer will no longer read the files off my usb flash drive. the computer sees the "mass storage device" when I plug my drive in, but the volume/files are not coming up.
    any suggestions?
    thank you!

Are you sure the files are still on your Flash drive.? Can you locate them in a folder on you flash drive just by going to the iTunes\iTunes Music folder and viewing the array of folders? If they are there, go back to the iTunes icon on the desktop, bring up the list of tunes, highlight them all, delete them, and go back to the Flash drive, highlight all the folders, drag them over to your blank iTunes screen and drop them. You won't get any indication anything is happening right away but they are reloading. For some reason iTunes cannot update itself with the correct pathways.
    Hope this helps, Dave.

  • I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.9.2 USB Hard Drive no longer shows

I just upgraded to Maverick 10.9.2 and my external hardrive (Toshiba Canvio Basic 3.0 Portable Hard Drive, PN#HDTB210XK3BA) is no longer appearing on my desk top when I plug it in.  It shows in the Disk Utliity and I have tried doing a verify as well as a repair and I stilll get the same message...
"Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."
I did a backup just prior to updating to Maverick so I know the external drive still works.  Plus I am able to see the files on my PC when I plug it in to there.
I did try resetting the SMC and the NVRAM/PRAM.
I plugged other externa; drives in (Maxtor, Seagate, etc) and again they did not show on the desk top but did show in Disk Utlity.
I see this has happened to several folks but am wondering how they got it fixed.

You need the printer drivers for Mavericks.. have you loaded them?
You can expect issues as lots of printers are not yet up to date with Mavericks.. if you can find drivers. delete all the previous printers and start over using the new drivers.

  • "Removable Disk" shows up in Windows 7 even when USB Flash drive isn't there

I have a new windoz 7 computer, a couple of new sandisk cruzer 16bg flash drives. I removed the flash drives a couple of times without doing the "eject" thing. I never had a problem with your flashdrives on my xp machines. I know I was a bad boy, I just pulled the usb flash drive out. When I go to my computer folder it shows me my hard drives and its shows 5 Devices with Removable Storage ....one of which is the DVD RW Drive and 4 Removable Disk  which are or were times when I plugged in my usb flash drive. They show 0 bytes, nothing is in any of the "Removable Disk" instances and I cannot remove them. I tried to delete, cut and I tried to eject but the Removable Disk icon stays there. How can I get rid of these safely, I tried rebooting a couple of times, they show up even without any usb devices plugged in. Thanks in advance Scott

I had this same problem.  It turns out to be easy to resolve:Open the Windows 7 "Start" Menu,  on the right shoose computer, in the new window that opens choose System Properties from the choices across the top of the window, now on the left side of the window choose Device Manager.  In Device Manager expand the "Disk Drives" entry.  You should see a listing of your hard disk drives and you'll also see "removable disk drives" with some additional idnetifying information.  Select the offending entry and then right click and select "Uninstall" click "Okay" and the entry will be gone.  Just be sure you're not uninstalling one of your hard disks.  That's all there is to it. To prevent this issue in the future always "eject" the SD drives/sticks before you remove them. I hope this helps.

  • Follow up question on recovery data on USB flash drive

HP instructions say the 32 GB flash drive should NOT be branded as Windows 8 compatible.   I bought a Sandisk 32 GB yesterday for  $20 on sale,   but it says on the back it is compatible.
Other more/or less expensive  flash drives did not address whether compatible with Windows 8.
    I have  Windows 8.1
Thanks in advance for your help...
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
If the flash drive is listed as 'Windows 8 compatible' it cannot be used - the reason is because the HP Recovery Media creation software looks for an external device and flash drives marked Win 8 compatible show as internal drives.
In the example below, the 32 Gb usb flash drive 'Dave G' shows as an internal drive which cannot be used, while the usb flash drive 'Removable Disk H' would work.

  • 10.5.1:  Unable to mount a USB flash drive.

I've seen this problem posted elsewhere, but so far I have yet to see a solution:
After upgrading my MacBook Pro to 10.5.1, it can no longer mount USB flash drives. They show up in System Profiler as well as the USB Probe tool, but do not show up in Disk Utility (and, obviously, not on the Desktop or listed in /Volumes).
I checked the drives on a co-worker's MBP, also running 10.5, and the problem persisted there. The drives mount and work fine under 10.4, as well as various flavors of Windows. When plugged into the MBPs, the status LEDs light up, so they are getting power, and mice plugged into the USB ports work fine.
So, the problem seems to be specific to mounting a USB flash drive in 10.5/10.5.1. I'm not sure if this is specific to MacBook Pros, or if the issue is the same on all 10.5 machines.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the USB problem. When I insert my USB memory pen, it flashes then stops. The icon doesn't come up on the Desktop, but the memory shows up on the System Profiler.
My USB telephone responds in Skype, but the sound input and output don't show up in Preferences, and so the phone doesn't work.
My Vodaphone USB internet modem won't connect.
This morning, I have no sound at all.
All these problems are resolved if the computer is restarted with the external source already plugged in, but it's a big hassle and must be solvable............

  • Can I copy HP Recovery Media to another USB flash drive?

Hi. Just a couple questions please: 1. When I make the one time only "HP Recovery Media" to a USB pen drive, can I then "copy" and "paste" to another USB flash drive as long as the 2nd flash drive has enough capacity? The Recovery will still work right?I ask this in case I need to change to another USB flash drive and I am aware that I can only have one copy of the HP Recovery. 2. If that is the case, I then can also make a backup to an external Western Digital drive so that in case of malfunction of the USB flash drive I can always transfer the files to another USB flash drive? Thanks in advance for the reply. Best regards.

  • Combine USB flash drives and other USB storage to show up as one?

    Hi,
Is it possible to combine USB flash drives or USB hard drives so when you plug two or more in, it will show up as one? Kind of the opposite of partitioning. Preferably using disk utility.
    Thanks!

    Hi gpd2paul4;
Possible probably. Should you do it? Probably not.
You would be using software RAID which would run only as fast as the slowest item in the RAID array. The USB flash drive would make the RAID array abysmally slow at best.

    Hi,
since yesterday I can't delete or create new files on my primary USB flash drive.
I then tried my other USB drive and it works without a problem.
Both are from the same manufacturer and formated with the FAT16 file system. When I check the permissions of the files/folder I see myself as owner with read/write permissions on both drives.
the error message on the console is:
rm: cannot remove 'foo': Read-only file system
I'd really like to give you more information but honestly I don't know where to look since one works and the other suddenly stopped working.

I wasn't aware that FAT filesystems had a concept of file permissions or ownership...
First of all, reboot if you recently updated your system. Because the linux package (the kernel) was also updated. Then install and use gparted to format the drive.
