[solved] Using a phone as a 3G modem

Hi!
I have a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and I'm trying to use it as a 3g modem with my laptop.
I went to the appropriate wiki page, installed usb_modeswitch and wvdial packages. When I plug in the phone via a USB cable, the lsusb command shows the following output:

When I try running usb_modeswitch manually I get this:

But with no apparent result. I also tried passing -S, -O and -G options to usb_modeswitch but none of these worked.
I think there has to be some kind of workaround because I managed to get 3g working earlier on linux mint with the same laptop and phone.
Can anyone help me with this?

Ok, never mind. I switched the phone to PC suite mode while connecting, and looked at the last few lines in /var/log/messages.log. Surprisingly, the modem showed up in /dev/ttyACM0:
usb 2-3: USB disconnect, address 7
usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
usb 2-3: USB disconnect, address 8
usb 2-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
cdc_acm 2-3:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device
Then I ran wvdialconf, edited the config manually to enter my mobile service provider specific settings, fired up wvdial, and voila, I have access to mobile internet. Thanks for the help anyway. Cheers!

I managed to get my wired connection back and updated my system. After that (and a reboot), NetworkManager started to mysteriously work.

Depends on your phone. I phones and most droid smartphone will act as a hotspot. Check yours out. You will need your carrier to agree. At and t does tethering from an I phone for $20 per month. You don't need an app. If the phone produces a wifi hot spot the pad will see it, and you are good to go.

Configuring Treo755p (Sprint) to use as "phone as a modem" service for laptop pc via Blue Tooth

Need help with configuring a Palm Treo755p (Sprint) to be used as "phone as a modem" with my laptop pc via Blue Tooth. The two are "paired" and I can push files (documents) from PC to phone. I can also HotSync wirelessly (via Blue Tooth). I am just wanting to "loose" the cable from the phone to the laptop pc when using "phone as a modem" for internet connectivity on my laptop pc. I see that there is a "virtual com port" established, but when I launch internet explorer, it wants to dial a number. The phone has "instant-on" internet connectivity.

Use android phone as modem for airport extreme

Can anyone suggest an intermediate device between my Nexus 5 phone and my Airport Extreme to enable the AE to use the phone as its internet source?
I assume the intermediate device would connect to the phone by USB and via Ethernet to the AE. Does such a thing exist?

In theory, it would work if the phone is providing a standard 802.11 wireless signal using WPA2 Personal security.
In practice, things may not work as well as the theory suggests.

I travel with two AirPort Express devices for use in hotels that only provide a wireless connection. The first Express is configured to "join" the hotel network and it provides an Ethernet signal to the second Express which is configured to act as a wireless router.
The hotel only sees one connection this way....the first Express....and I can set up my own "private" network for other wireless devices to connect without having to pay for each separate connection or device.

It is all up to you. You can use the phone line which came with the printer or you can get a new one. It does need to be a 2-wire phone line though.

Using LG CU320 as a Bluetooth Modem

I was able to connect my LG CU320 Cingular Phone as a bluetooth modem and verified a 217 kilobits per second connection.
I got some of this information from http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=874483.
Click on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar and choose setup bluetooth device.
Choose Mobile phone.
You'll have to make sure you phone is "visible" from the bluetooth menu (may have that wrong, not sure how LG does it yet)
Follow the instructions from your mac's bluetooth assistant
Choose use Address book (if you want, don't know how that works yet) and as connection for internet.
For settings choose high speed direct connection.

for username: [email protected]
for password: CINGULAR1
all is case sensitive (that means use capital letters).
I know it seems weird but choose Sprint PCS Vision as the modem script. This is because the new 3G on Cingular is based on similar Sprint PCS Vision.
Open up Internet connect from the Applications folder, click on Bluetooth and choose connect. This should work. Others are welcome to add their two cents.

Are you in a UMTS area? I tried the same thing with my CU320.. Same settings and it starts to connect then immediatly disconnects.. I see the phone say "Connecting" then almost immediatly it says "Disconnecting".. My powerbook then says something about the modem disconnecting unexpectly and to try again.. I wonder if the dialing script is wrong, or if I am missing something else.. I am in a EDGE only area, so I wonder if it has to do with that and when UMTS launches here in a few months if that problem will go away?

I am afraid that this is a local policy of Germany as a state, and adopted by companies, which activate there. This method has been used in many European countries, but not in all countries. I am still happy that almost all the films are subtitled in Romania as this allows to hear the original language, the original voice and is very useful for learning foreign languages. Dubbing films is, in my mind, against the European spirit of mutlicultural continent, and states which still support this should abandon this method. I think this is an issue of a cultural phenomenon, not an Apple forum issue.

Backup and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.

I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.

I got the white one.

I cannot use my phone.

i was updating applications by Blackberry Desktop Software.
suddenly my phone shows an error "Error 507 Reload Software" on a white background.
now i am unable to use my phone.
plz tell me how to get my software back.

Fax using cell phone instead of landline

I've been all over the web trying to find out if this can be done. I did find a KBase doc that supports how to set up a bluetooth modem for faxing. But I could not get that to work. Anyone know how to set up a cell phone as a modem and use for sending faxes? I no longer have a land line and can't figure out why one wouldn't be able to use the cell for the analog line.
If anyone knows ANYTHING, please let me know. (3rd party software, tricks for Blackberry Pearl, T-Mobile restrictions, setting up to use the phone via USB and not bluetooth, etc)
Thank you so much! I'm sick of paying $20 a month for efax.com when I only need to send 1 or 2 pages per month.
