[Solved] Virtual Box and wicd issue ?

Hey guys,
I have been using arch for like about a year now.  I have slowing converting my family members across by install on their machines.  But I have experience a new problem the other day.  My brother has two computers a laptop that I have put arch & kdemod 4 in January.  His also has a desktop with a windows which has just craped itself, so I said time to arch it !.
He needs xp for some programs (that don't like wine) so i have install virtualbox on his laptop no problems.  But after successfully installing arch & kdemod 4 on the desktop I have tried 3 times to install virtualbox.  The Problem I have is after installing the binaries as per wiki wicd stops working completly.
wicd cannot get ip address, when I trying connect via wireless error message is "bad password"
So something is going wrong with the bridging.

Mac Tzu: No, you don't need to bridge networks in rc.conf/conf.d anymore. You just need to chose the setting in VirtualBox.

  • Uninstalling Sun Virtual Box and Windows 7 from Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone!
Can anyone tell me how to properly UN-install Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta from my Macbook Pro so I can reinstall Windows 7 Beta thru Boot Camp?
I recently installed Sun's Virtual Box and Windows 7 Beta on my Macbook Pro. It works fine, but there are some things about Virtual Box I am not happy with. I'm told that uninstalling both Windows 7 and Virtual Box and reinstalling Windows 7 through Boot Camp will be better for what I want and Windows 7 will run much better that way.

    goducks14 wrote:
Thank you - I really appreciate your response. I did delete the .dmg so I guess I will have to re-download it from Sun and then uninstall it as you suggested.
Maybe you can answer another quick question? I am hearing both YES and NO in regards to being able to install the Windows 7 Beta using Boot Camp. Any problems that you might be aware of?
If you visit our BootCamp forum you will find many users running Win7http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1244
While Win7 is not supported, for many users, that's not important.
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit on this MBP, it was not supported and I installed it under Tiger and a beta of BootCamp! It still works. Experimenting is fun and a great learning experience.
Just be sure you have a viable backup - SuperDuper!, CCC or TM before installing BootCamp and Win7 and you always have a path for a recovery should anything go wrong.
    Enjoy!

  • After Installing Oracle Virtual Box and changing the network adapter to bridged mode cant access my server

    Hi ,
I have installed Oracle Virtual box on windows server 2008 r2 hosted on 1und1.de.
Till installtion and setting up untun on virtualbox it was fine, but once i changed the adapater to bridged mode. I immediatly lost connectivity with my server and now cant access.
It is now 2 days i cant access my server and neither ping it, also the website hosted on it is also down.
The 1und1 has following 2 options
    1) using putty i can connect to server command prompt using administrator but cant run any gui application
    2) Server Rescue mode: where i get special environment to start, stop services, access registry and command prompt.
Till now i have tried lot of setting to enable network connectivity but not able to success

    Hi,
According to the result of "ipconfig /all", the physical adapter dosen't appear.
Please check if the physical network adapter works properly. We can verify this in Device Manager.
To open Device Manager by using the Windows interface
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Hardware and Sound.
    Click Device Manager.
If the network adapter is working properly, please make sure that the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) has been checked in the properties of the physical network adapter.
If issue persists, please try to uninstall the Oracle Virtual box.
    Best Regards.

  • [SOLVED] virtual box (vboxdrv: not loaded)

    I have installed virtualbox
    pacman -S virtualbox_bin
    and installed virtualbox_bin 3.0.0-2
    /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv not found
When I run virtual box, it says vboxdrv is not loaded
    what to do
    Last edited by sant527 (2009-07-10 06:33:36)

    For reference..
pacman -Ql packageName shows what files a package contains.
You might add | grep bin or something of the sort after it to find the binaries quickly (sometimes.. some files contain 'bin' in the title or a folder name, obviously)
that question has been asked many times before. please learn to use Pacman, the Forum (and corresponding Search functions), and the Wiki before asking questions, and edit your first post to append [SOLVED] to the title when you find an appropriate answer to your questions.. it will save those of us looking to help time and frustration if you do all of that. thanks.

  • [SOLVED] high CPU and freezing issues

    Greetings,
While I don't claim to be an expert at these things, I'm no newbie either... at least as far as computers go. I admit there are still many things I need to learn about linux, but that's all part of the fun. Anyways on to the point of this topic.
After the power supply on my main pc died and shorted out the mother board with it, I have been forced to use an older computer. It is a computer that I know works as it was used by my wife as a desktop when she didn't feel like using her laptop. Odd.. I know, but hey, whatever she wants she gets .
It is an older pc, a compaq presario 5423. It is running an intel p4 1.6 gz processor and has an nvidia geforce 2 mx agp video card. Ever since the last xorg update that refuses to work with nvidia-96xx, I've been using the nv driver. I have tried briefly the other one (nouvelo or however it's spelled) and while it worked it seemed to slow my computer down and produce some odd effects like screen freezes and whatnot. It was running two 256 MB ram sticks, I replaced them with the two 512's from my main (dead) pc. I have the two hd's from my main pc on it, properly set up (I basically resinstalled arch so that I was sure it was done right, and just because I love the arch linux installation process, it is awesome IMO). I've been running this PC since.. October I believe... whenever it was that I submitted that e17 screenshot... I think that was October.
Here is the issue I am having. The CPU loves to max out.. ie.. reach 100% almost instantly. Open up a browser *poof* 100%, making me wait a moment before I can do anything else. Open up a few tabs.. *poof* 100%... and frequent freezes.  It doesn't seem to matter what I am running, doing, using... it always happens. This happens in pekwm, fluxbox, openbox, e17, wmaker, firebox, twindy, fvwm, even the almighty awesome. Yes, those are all wm's I've tried. Forget trying to run KDE (I did, it loads... but that's about it. I had to hard restart because of total freeze-up). I've tried all kinds of browsers, firefox, chrome, iron, midori, auroa, konq... Midori hates me, the others are too heavy... only Chrome and Iron (both basically the same) work, but still experience the freezes and the like. Uzbl laughed at me as even trying to start it caused a massive CPU spike. I know, hard to believe.. which leaves me thinking there is a serious problem.
MPD spikes the CPU by 20% easily each song change. Googles even more so. Forget the heavyweights like amarok and exile. Pidgin spikes it when loading initially but evens out. Terminal spikes it only when compiling, updating, or building from AUR... or installing a package with pacman.
Here's the thing, when my wife used it before, using LXDE with Open Box and only a total of 512 MB she never experienced this. This box came with Windows XP which ran fine.. somewhat slow but fine. So this all leaves me thinking, something is just wrong.  I am wondering if maybe bad RAM? Maybe the thing is just trying to give up the ghost? Before going and pulling out RAM though I want to see what you guys think.
Here's what HTOP has to say...
CPU(while writing this post): 36.8% (in pekwm!)
Mem: 187/1009 MB (all bars are lite up...)
Swp: 1/2863MB (already tapping into swap?)
    Tasks: 128 total, 1 running
    Load average: 0.26 0.08 0.06
So yeah, I researched online.. this processor is supposed to be able to even run KDE fine. So something has to be off. Any ideas?
Last edited by mythus (2009-11-20 12:13:53)

Well right before I changed drivers back to nvidia-96xx, I did a pacman -Syu check.. there was a new xorg update waiting for me. So I updated and switched back to nvidia-96xx driver.
Still having the fun CPU issues so this must not be an nv driver thing itself.
    free -m provides the following...
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:          1009        606        403          0         60        387
    -/+ buffers/cache:        158        851
    Swap:         2863          0       2863
Therefore it would seem that memory issue is not the problem.
Watching the cpu spike just because I type is very unnerving. Heck just running htop did a spike. Poor old computer... Just for S&G I tried once again to load kde. Neopunk killed it with it's massive cpu usage + x trying to match it. What can I say.. X was jealousy, there was no way X was going to let neopunk use more CPU than it.
Ah.. so nerve racking. I've been working on this for almost two months now. I'll look and she what distros I got lieing around.. been awhile since I burned one and not really wanting too.. had no desire since arch is what I want. But I suppose I do need to compare to see if it is something else like X causing this.
I'll do that in a bit.. I'll wait a moment incase anyone else has another suggestion. Give me time to get off my butt and do some honey-do's for my wife.

  • Virtual Box and my CD-ROM

    Good evening
I am not sure if this is the right place to query this...
I have just installed Virtual Box on my machine, this is like a VM ware for me to run Windows... (sorry but its needed for my University software, a pain I know) although I am very new to Macs I need to know how I can locate/navigate to the CR-ROM drive via Finder.
I understand this may be called ATA as I have seen this in a few places but I would just like some guidance on this one.
    Thank you all in advance...

    GazzaT,
Like said before you have to have a disc in the computer to really see the disc drive. And in that case you will just see the disc. However if you want to access this disc from Virtual Box you will have to put the disc into your computer and then (Mount) it in Virtual Box. To do so I believe while in Your Virtual Machine Goto (Devices)/(Mount CD/DVD-Rom)/(Host Drive.....(name of host drive)) after which it will appear in My Computer like normal. After you are done using it in Windows you will have to Eject it From windows and then I believe it will remount in Mac. Do note you cant use your CD drive at the same time on Mac and Windows.
    Hope this helps.

After googling I have read that many people get this warning after a kernel update but in
my cause this is a fresh install.
I even followed the steps for a custom kernel and reveived the follow:
    input:
    dkms install vboxhost/$(pacman -Q virtualbox|awk {'print $2'}|sed 's/\-.\+//') -k $(uname -rm|sed 's/\ /\//')
    response:

Pretty much at a loss and any help would be appreciated.

    Install Reason : Explicitly installed
    Install Script : Yes

    and now I can run
    modprobe vboxdrv
and it seems to work, yet when I run VirtualBox, I still get:

    Just tried removing virtualbox via
    pacman -Rns virtualbox
and reinstalling and it stills reads kernet as 3.8.4-1

  • [solved] Virtual Box

I have windows 7 installed in a virtual box. It worked perfectly. Then I upgraded my system to the lastest linux kernel. Now Virtual Box says that vboxdrv is not loaded so I can't boot windows.
    When I did this:
    [meskarune@Lychee ~]$ modprobe vboxdrv
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist.pacsave, it will be ignored in a future release.
    FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found.
I tried to see if I could update virtual box...but yaourt is not finding it. There is another topic on that here: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=74843
should I try to update it manually and see if that helps? Is there something I need to do with the new kernel?
Last edited by Meskarune (2009-06-26 16:11:09)

heh. ok now I feel dumb. Upgraded the package and saw the note:
"run vbox_build_module as root every time the kernel is upgraded"
    now it works.

howto use shared folders in Linux guests - http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15868
After installing the Guest Additions, you can use the Shared Folders Functionality. To access them, you have to define at least one in the VM settings. Open the VM Settings and go to Shared Folders. You can define them there. Click on the Add button and browse for a folder you want to share. Make sure that the name of the share doesn't contain any illegal characters like white spaces. Keep the name as simple as possible. In this howto, I will use the name share.
Now that you have defined a SF, it's time to mount it. Boot the Guest and open a terminal. Create a folder where you will mount it on. E.g. in your home folder. I will use ~/host for the mount point.
Now mount it with the following command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
sudo mount -t vboxsf share ~/host
Note that with this, the default mount options are used and all files are owned by root. This can be changed by adding some mount options. Options are passed on with the -o parameter. You can use multiple options with one parameter, seperate the values with a comma. See the man page of mount for more info on which options you can use. The User Manual also notes the options compatible with the Shared Folders. To mount the SF so that you are the owner of the files, use this command:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
        sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000,gid=1000 share ~/host
If you want to have it mount automatically upon each boot, put the mount command in /etc/rc.local (Debian based distro's), or whatever script is run at the end of the boot process. The Shared Folders service should mount them automatically, but that doesn't always happen.
Using /etc/fstab has little effect, because that file is processed before the SF module is loaded and will fail to mount the share. Sometimes, the share does get mounted because the GA check for it when they are loaded upon boot, but it's very flaky, meaning it doesn't work most of the time. You're better of with the first option.

About 1 - 2 minutes after launching a Windows VM vbox crashes and causes a hard reboot.  I've recompiled the modules and completely reinstalled the package from AUR with no joy.  Below are the package versions and segments of log files that are relatively pertinent to the issue.
    virtualbox_bin 3.2.10-2
    kernel26 2.6.36-3
    depends:
    'libidl2' 0.8.14-1
    'libxcursor' 1.1.11-1
    'libxinerama' 1.1.1-1
    'libxslt' 1.1.26-2
    'curl' 7.21.2-2
    'gcc'  4.5.1-1
    'make' 3.82-2
    'kernel26-headers' 2.6.36-3
    'python2' 2.7-3
Seems very similar to this issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105631

I am having a similar issue, I haven't used vbox for a few days, until just now, several upgrades have taken place.
Namely the kernel upgrade and udev come to mind, however after I rebuilt the kernel modules and attempted to use vbox puel it seems to have stopped all events and thrown the laptop on a "loop" type thing. That's the best I can describe it coming from a programming point of view, where it blocks all events until vbox finishes or something it is doing finishes but it never finishes causing me to hard reboot because no key events or mouse events get through(just freezes). Normally in a program I'd just control-c it, for my own that is, and then hunt down the loop, although this loop seems to be at a much deeper level.
Although my issue doesn't happen in any given timeframe, just at a specific point, when it gets to the Windows Logo during the boot after it gets through grub and all of that(I have a dual boot vbox setup).
I was going to post my own bug report here, although since I'm new at this, I'll just share my thoughts in your thread(Hope I'm not breaking any rules or disturbing anyone by posting in your thread, although I didn't see any rules in this forum)
I'm using the same virtualbox_bin version.
Most of the packages are the same version as your except kernel26-headers 2.6.36.1-3 & kernel26 2.6.361-3
Pulled the versions from pacman -Qi <package>

  • Emails sent from device not show in "Sent Box" and "BIS" issue

    Dear All and Rim:
New to BB world, needed following help...
AOL mail box had connect with "Tour" successfully, service provided by Verizon.
Mails sent from device are not show in AOL "Sent Box" nor Outlook Express's "IMAP" / "POP" server's Outgoing "SMTP" folder.
Truly need copies to "Sent Box", Thanks for help!!
Also try to set up "BIS" accout, error message said:
"Your Account is not accessible via HTML Browser..
Please use your device to access Black Berry Internet Service"
    I used this link:
    https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=vzw
    Thanks you,
    Jan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

So for the mail issue seems sending myself a copy is the only way to go, right?
    That would be a solution.
And about the BIS, my try was on a PC, it didnt work...  Anyway, i was going to log on to the BIS to work on my issue above, but seems it doesnt help now, so it doesnt matter if i can sign up or not.
Well, that's entirely odd...I just used that link myself (from a PC) and get into my BIS account just fine. You can, however, use the device interface to BIS -- watch that demo I provided you above for instructions on that. BIS is merely a service, provided by your carrier. The PC/website method and the device interface -- those are simply two different interfaces into the same service, so using one or the other doesn't matter...they result in the same thing.
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Virtual Box Kernel Bug?

    I'm using virtualbox_bin 3.2.8-5 from the AUR & kernel26 2.6.35.6-1.
I boot the machine clean. It starts the bare essentials. I open a terminal, /etc/rc.d/vboxdrv setup && modprobe vboxdrv. It is not vboxdrv that is the issue, but I'll recompile it anyway to make sure.
I start VirtualBox and it either:
    A) Locks up the entire system
    B) Gives me some error that says Component: ProgressProxy, Interface: IProgress
    C) Force reboots my PC
Only other things in in the /var/log/errors.log besides this:
Sep 29 15:54:51 localhost kernel: BUG: scheduling while atomic: VBoxXPCOMIPCD/5464/0x00000003

is "Assuming drive cache: write through" warnings.
Not sure if this should be in the kernel section or not.

Thanks for the very quick response.
I didn't realize I wasn't running the latest. Internet's been going in and out frequently. Once I've confirmed this is it (after yaourt finished upgrading everything), I'll change the title to solved.

  • [Solved] Java applications and awesome issue

    Hello Folks,
I know this issue has been solved before, but it didn't work for me:
You all know the issue with the grey windows when starting a java application, right? Well, I have that issue too and I'd like to bring that to work.
I read this article   http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Problems_with_Java   but the workarrounds didn't work (I didn't try the second one with wmname).
Is there yet any other know workarround? I also tried this one but that one didn't work eighter:
    export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
    [tectu@mercur ~]$ awesome -version
    awesome v3.4.11 (Pickapart)
    • Build: Apr 27 2012 09:01:08 for x86_64 by gcc version 4.7.0 (nobody@archbuild)
    • D-Bus support: ✔
    [tectu@mercur ~]$ java -version
    java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea7 2.1) (ArchLinux build 7.b147_2.1-3-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode)
    [tectu@mercur ~]$
Does somebody have a working solution for me?
    ~ Tectu

Oh, the 'wmname LG3D' solution did work indeed.
I was just curious about saying that I use a different window manager, that I thought I'm just gonna try the two other solutions.
    Thank you guys!
