[SOLVED] vmware/virtualbox hybrid question
Good Afternoon Fellow Archers,
I have one Windows directX game that will run on native Windows, or in VMWare player, not VirtualBox.
But I prefer VirtualBox for the way it performs on my C Compiler and other Windows centric stuff I have to do. I could list a bunch of reasons why I don't want to dual boot, and why I need to run Windows. Suffice to say, I use Arch for everything I need, and then WIndows for the customers I have to support.
I have one DirectX game that does not run properly under VB, but works perfectly under VMWare.
Question:
Can I have both installed simultaneously? VMWare for the one personal DirectX game I want, and then VB for everything else?
For the record: They would never be ran at the same time.
Advice is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Dave............

Thank you for the response. I appreciate it. I just thought it wiser to ask rather than risk borking my system.
I knew that they both use their own kernel mods.....but I wanted a little reassurance.
Again, Thank You!
Dave.

Virtualizing whole infrastructure - vmware, virtualbox, oracle vm ?
Hello All,
We have the project of virtualizing the infrastructure (consisting of DBs and iASs on Red hat 4.6 (no RAC or ASM)).
I have used vmware and know the procedure: you install vmware server, you create VMs, install an OS, access the VM, and then install what is required. Similar on virtualbox.
1 - Is VMware or virtualbox certified for oracle? or only Oracle VM?
2 - The procedure on Oracle VM is the same? After installing the VM Server, can we create VMs on any OS? Or are we limited to templates?
I visiited
[http://itnewscast.com/chapter-4-oracle-vm-server-sizing-installation-and-updates#Oracle_VM_Server_PXE_Kickstart_Installation|http://itnewscast.com/chapter-4-oracle-vm-server-sizing-installation-and-updates#Oracle_VM_Server_PXE_Kickstart_Installation]
and
note Certified Software on Oracle VM [ID 464754.1]
but didn't come up with any clarifications.
Any help is much apprecciated.
Thank you.

UPDATE well , I suppose that the note
Oracle Linux Support Policies for Virtualization and Emulation [ID 417770.1]
answers my questions #1. "no for vmware/virtualbox. yes for oraclevm".
Edited by: Pinela on Jul 4, 2012 10:48 AMThere are two important points that you should understand:
1. Oracle tries to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) and running Oracle database on VMWare. They suggest that they don't support it, but they DO support it, when they're pinned down. We've been all through this at my workplace. The situation is: If you run Oracle on VMWare, and have a problem, and open a service request with Oracle, IF (and this is a big IF) Oracle thinks the problem you're having may be caused by running on VMWare, they MAY require you to show that the problem exists on a non-VMWare platform. But almost ALL problems you'll have with the database will not fall under that "IF".
2. But here is the killer reason why you might not want to used VMWare: If you run Oracle DB on VMWare, you must license EVERY core in that box. If you think about how many cores are in a small 2-socket server (the ones we just bought have TWELVE), the cost to license Oracle on a $10,000 server may be far more than you can afford. And if you can't fully load up all those cores, or if you are running things besides Oracle on those cores, you're paying for cores you can't use. HOWEVER, on Oracle VM, you pay ONLY for the cores that you allocate to the virtual machine(s) that are running Oracle DB. -
USB devices not detected in VMware [SOLVED; Using Virtualbox instead]
I am running Arch as a host and XP on VMWare workstation 7. My primary purpose of installing XP on VMWare was to use my edit my Line6 POD (behaves as a usb sound card) and get my USB TV Tuner box to work. The big problem that I am facing is that VMWare is not detecting any USB device (not even my USB Hard Drive).
I have the usb controller installed.
Any suggestions?
Last edited by devadittya (2009-11-24 20:04:45)I don't know vmware but with other virtual machines there is often a configuration option whether usb drives should be automatically mounted or not. Sometimes automounting also only works if the vm has the focus, i.e. is the active window.

[solved] vm (virtualbox) crashes with ipod nano/touch mounted
Hi
BIG EDIT:
I've got virtualbox 4.0.0-3 installed. I'm running Windows xp (sp3) as a guest.
USB works fine. But when I plug in my ipon nano 6g windows crashes, respectively the vm aborts.
the log file ends with:
00:00:36.025 VUSB: attached '0a13ef00[proxy 05ac:1266]' to port 1
00:00:36.036 OHCI: USB Operational
On another forum another arch linux user reported the same on x86_64 system wheras mine is 32 bit. This user also installed windows 7 and not xp.
So I'm still wondering where to look for it ...
Any clue highly appreciated.

[SOLVED] VMWare Player won't install
Hello,
I have a problem installing VMWare player on arch. (disclaimer: I have RTFM *and* searched and googled hehe)
I'm trying to install VMware-Player-2.5.1-126130.x86_64.bundle on the following machine:
Linux 2.6.29-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) 9850 Quad-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
I was following the guide here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installing_VMware
and somewhat here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1126993
My problem is though when i run /usr/bin/vmplayer it complains that
Unable to build kernel module
See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-12218.log for details
and wont do anything else. I've basicly followed the guide I listed above in its steps so I'm a little lost now.
Any advice would be greatly appriciated as its for a university assigment im rapidly running out of time on heheh.
Regards,
Mike.

I got it to work but a little differently since it still wouldnt patch for me
Anyhow Il post my solution here since i know I always hate visiting a
SOLVED thread only to find noone said HOW
So I move my file from binary to binary old
(mv /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary /usr/lib/vmware/modules/binary.old)
then i go to my source directory
(cd /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source)
i untar everything in sight (:P)
[root@TOMATO source]# ls
vmblock-only vmci.tar vmnet-only vmppuser.tar
vmblock.tar vmmon-only vmnet.tar vmware-workstation-2.6.29-v2.patch
vmci-only vmmon.tar vmppuser-only vsock.tar
then I used the scripts from here http://communities.vmware.com//thread/203231
Finally I run step 6). vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
And done!:D -

[SOLVED] VMWare folder shares override dir_colors
Hello all,
(Running as a Linux guest)
I've been setting up and using a dir_colors file to control the colors in ls output.
However, VMWare shared folders (and all folders inside, except for files) show with a green background. I have nothing in my dir_colors settings this up. Where is that color coming from and how can I change it?
Last edited by marfig (2010-08-12 13:16:28)Meanwhile I've found the solution and forgot to flag this thread as solved. So here it is now.
The OTHER_WRITABLE setting in my .dir_colors file is what was defining that color. -
[SOLVED] load VirtualBox modules without root pw
Hi,
i want to write a wrapper script for virtualbox to load the modules when virtualbox starts and unload them when it exits.
is there a way to load those specific modules without root password? i could teach sudo to allow modprobe without password but that would be a security problem.
Last edited by jnhieber (2013-07-13 16:42:19)I'm experiencing some problems with suspend to ram on my x230t. since kernel 3.10 i often get a kernel panic when i suspend.
i use an up to date system (no testing) with linux-ck-ivybridge and intel graphics. i wrote systemd scripts to unload third party modules before suspend (like vboxdrv).
that actually doesn't solve the problem but i thought it might be a good idea if only loading such modules when they are really needed, i don't use virtualbox often.
thanks for the reply, i think this can work. the script can only be changed by root so this would be no security problem.
so this is solved, i'm thinking about a new topic regarding my kernel panics, do you know where to get the kernel logs of the panic?
when i go to suspend the sleep led blinks fast and the screen is blank, so i have to rely on log files. -
[SOLVED] video card support question
Hi Everyone,
I need to get my dad a new pc with a simple (newbee) linux distro on it and I was thinking of something like mint. He has been using Ubuntu the last 2 years but for some reasons we want to switch. I'm a very satisfied arch user but this is way over his head.
I'm looking for a system without windows and found something with the following specs:
Cardreaders 3,5" Spire 51-in-1 zwart
Processor AM3 AMD Athlon2 X2 255 65W 3.10GHz / BOX
Motherboard Biostar AM3 N68S3+ V/S/L/µATX/DDR3
RAM 2048MB DDR3/1333 Kingston CL9
Graphics 5450 ATI HIS HD 5450 Silence VGA/DVI/HDMI/GDDR3 1024MB
HDD 500GB Samsung HD502HJ SATA/16MB/7200rpm
Housing Codegen P6232-A11 460 Watt / zwart-zilver
DVD-Burner Samsung SH-222AB 22x SATA / bulk / zwart
DVD-player Sony Optiarc 18x/48x SATA / bulk / zwart
I'm somewhat worried about the graphics card and after browsing the forums I can't get a satisfying answer whether the card will work with or without problems if at all. Can anyone help out or give some advise?
Thanx a bunch.

[SOLVED] VMware player, network doesn't work
Hi!
I installed VMware player through AUR and it works well. But when I started my vm (Debian 4.0) it asked if I had copied or moved it. I chose "I copied it" because I copied it from my hdd to external hdd. I started my vm but network didn't work. I configured network using vmware-config.pl file like it recommended (vmnet0 as bridged with my wlan0 and vmnet8 as NAT. I also chose to use host-only networking in my vm's (wmaster0)). How did you guys configured your network succesfully?
I just want it to work like on my windows box. It has it's own IP and I can connect to it's IP directly from firefox. Yeah, I run webserver on that vm.

[Solved]vmware won't compile modules under 2.6.37
Installation went well, but during the compilation it fails and looks like broken code :
struct file_operations’ has no member named ‘ioctl’
implicit declaration of function ‘kernel_locked’
[/tmp/vmware-root]#:uname -r
2.6.37-ARCH
Failing to compile driver.c
