[Solved] Weird base-devel update error

It's been a while that for almost all the packages in base-devel yields an error when updating. Please see update output below.
I have tried to empty cache with pacman -Scc, and the pacman log under /var only says that it has installed the packages, without any errors. I have not experienced any issues with the packages though.
The only non-standard thing about my system is that I am using bcache with ext4. I wouldn't guess that that could affect, but I mention it for good measure.
Is there any ideas about what I can do to find out about this?

[SOLVED] Weird new access denied error from Samba

This just started when I did a system upgrade last week (from samba 3.4.3-something to 3.5.2-something).
The hardware: Server is arch, of course; workstation 2 feet away is Windows XP connected by ethernet to a cheap Gateway brand switch.
The filesystem: a folder called /pub with owner set to my primary (non-root) login and group set to the household group, perms 775 so both owner and group have full rw perms. Also /tmp, owned by root:root with perms 777. /pub has a symbolic link to /tmp so you can use /pub/tmp as a fully writeable junk area on the network.
The shares: /pub is given smb.conf parameters public=yes, writable=yes, create mask=0775
The login: My XP box has a login that makes it a member of the family group
Up until the upgrade, this all worked fine. The XP could attach the public share (drive P:) and go to P:\tmp when I wanted to save a temp file, knowing that it would be erased when I reboot the server.
Now, the public share still works great in that I can go to drive P: and all the subdirectories within and read/write to my heart's content... EXCEPT the symbolic link to /tmp. When I try CD P:\tmp
I get
Access is denied.
The same thing happens on my Windows 7 VM (running on the linux box), so it's not XP. Other than the upgrade from 3.4 to 3.5, nothing else in the above environment has changed.
Yes, I know there are numerous workarounds. I could create an actual /pub/tmp folder and include that in the reboot purge... but it's the principle of the thing. I shouldn't HAVE to do that.
Any thoughts on what's broken and how to fix it, or do I need to take this to the Samba folks? I always try here first in case it's an arch-specific problem...

Thanks! That wasn't the answer, but it prompted me to do some more hunting. Turns out the latest upgrade fixes a security hole: Enabling UNIX extensions automatically disables wide links. Since I did not define UNIX extensions, it defaults to yes, so even explicitly adding wide links = yes to smb.conf did not fix the problem.

Looks like I can have one or the other, but not both. So I have to decide which is more important to me. Or create the folder /pub/tmp and symlink /tmp to it rather than the other way around.

[SOLVED] question about base-devel

Hi,
Im a newbei to Linux and to Arch.
After my last install, few days ago, i managed to do something that totally wrecked my system.
So I reinstalling. In the Wiki Installation guide, official and unofficial it says
Install the base system
# pacstrap -i /mnt base
I wander why the base-devel was removed.

[Solved] pacman won't update kernel

Hi, I create a base image that I clone to build from, it has nothing added but 'base-devel', earlier I installed an XFCE install, I went to create another from the same base image, when I install nvidia it told me in both cases that it needed a newer kernel 3.1.4, so I ran
pacman -Syu
. This morning this solves the problem, right now it states that it has nothing to update (it's made from the same image) and nvidia won't install stating it needs that upgrade. I shuffled mirrors around to see if it helped but it didn't. Anyone have an idea of why this is occurring?

No, it doesn't do the upgrade, it insists there is nothing to upgrade, while the nvidia install says that there is.

[Solved] Grub not displaying menu, error messages from grub-mkconfig

Hi I'm new
I have (or rather, am trying to setup) a dual boot with Windows 8.1 and Arch, with each OS on separate SSDs.
Windows 8.1 already installed, Arch installation (seems to have) has gone smoothly. However, when I remove the installation usb, and try to boot, I get a command line prompt:
grub >_
...instead of a menu. I tried typing 'boot', but got 'you need to load the kernel first'. So I cannot access my arch installation without chrooting (or knowing how to compile the kernel in the command line, which I could not find after a lot of searching)
I followed the documentation in the Beginner's Guide and the GRUB page for installing and configuring GRUB. This is UEFI (grub2), not BIOS (grub legacy).
pacman -S grub efibootmgr
grub-install --target=x86S64-efi --efi-directory=/boot --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
No error messages. I also installed os-prober for kicks. When I went to generate the config file (as recommended for beginners), I got a torrent of what I interpreted to be error messages, not just copacetic output:
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
resulted in:

(sorry about the image. I had to shutdown and reboot into my windows partition, since I still can't arch it up. If any/all of you have a better way to reproduce output and feel it pertinent, I'm all ears)
so upon exiting chroot and rebooting, grub boots up to the above effect; no menu is displayed. And I am sad panda.
Background Information:
Partition scheme:
/dev/sda1 - BIOS boot partition (I didn't read carefully, lol)
/dev/sda2 - EFI System Partition - mounted to /mnt/boot when chrooting in
/dev/sda3 - Root partition - mounted to /mnt/ when chrooting in
/dev/sda4 - Home partition - mounted to /mnt/home when chrooting in
The installation and configuration described above was done in chroot with the above partition scheme
I originally had issues booting into UEFI mode with the arch iso (written to a usb stick for the initial install). The boot would hang at 'triggering uevents'. I ultimately fixed this by pressing 'e' in the bootloader menu (also grub, I believe) and prepended
linux /boot/vmlinux-linux root=UUID=978e3e81-8048-4ae1-8a06-aa727458e8ff nomodeset nouveau.modeset=0
It then (successfully triggered uevents? and) booted normally

I realized that since I was not using EFISTUB, I could not mount the ESP to /boot; it had to be /boot/efi. A quick remount-reinstall of grub, then rerunning grub-mkconfig solved the issue.
Also, regarding WonderWoofy's suggestion: I learned by trying gummiboot that for whatever reason the kernel hadn't compiled properly when I ran
pacstrap /mnt base base-devel
Fixed via
pacman -S linux

Lion 10.7.1 update error = no sound , no mouse ...

I have Lion 10.7.1 and i got update notification so i start update my os when its come to installation i got message like "unknown error" and update of OS chrashed with some strange loud noise , then when it restarted i had no sound and my remote mouse don't work , it was all ok before update error.
In Preference - Sound there is no Output device ( i can plug in my suround my headspeakers and nothing happend). And my remote mouse not working. So i don't know is there enithing else not working but is seems all other ok.
I don't have backup and i have a lot of work on my mac Book Pro 13" 2011 , so i need to fix it without reinstalation cos i buy this because i was full of windows reinstalations ewery 3-4 months.

ok i solved this problem . First what was the problem ,it was permissions thet must be changed due to error upgrade of OSX.
solution:
1. restart PC , and when it start press option key (alt).
2. it brings boot options , i have OSX lion , Windows , and now i got Rescue , chose Rescue ( or repair or what ewer you have to reinstall osX).
3. you got some options to restore from backup , to reinstall, find help online , disk utility. Chose disk utility.
4. in Disk utility chose to repair permissions. when thet finish restart pc.
thet is what i did , and it fix me all. sound now work and USB 1 work too.
I hope this will help someone.

clear C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder, restart the two services.

Windows Update Error 80080005 Windows 7 Client with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server

Hello everyone, I've looked around at other threads related to my issue, and I can't seem to find a correct answer.
I have a computer lab that I've recently installed a Windows 7 Enterprise image onto 35 Dell Optiplex computers (most are 380's, a few older 360's).
I created the image using MDT2010 and used one of the 380's as a reference.
All has been well for about a month or two but recently 6 computers are giving me Windows Update errors with the error code of 80080005.
I have a WSUS 3.0 SP2 server running, and all of my other computers seem to be getting their updates just fine. WSUS has the problematic computers in it's database, but it shows that they haven't checked in for "x" days.
I have Avast 4.8 Professional installed, I have OpenDNS configured to block bad websites, ____, etc. and I also use an Untangle server to prevent access to bad websites. I've ran a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan on the affected computers, as well
as Windows Defender scan, and Windows Live OneCare scans, and all have found no malicious software.
I have also tried resetting the Windows update service as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 as well as a script that supposedly does the same thing, but also resets all previous
update events, but I can't find the script source right now (I had ran it last week, and it didn't work).
I'm currently running a SFC /Scannow on one of the computers, and now it has finished. It gives the error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service. I'll have to google that next.
The last windows update that ran on the computer that I'm working on now was installed on 11-18-2010 and was a Windows Defender Update (KB915597 Def: 1.93.1985.0)
Previous to that was 11/9/2010 2 updates: KB977165 and KB981852.
I guess I'll have to look at all of the other machines to see if they have the same updates installed.
Anyway, has anyone else had this problem? I've seen vista home editions, and RC's but no real Windows 7 Pro+ RTM versions in business environments where updates were controlled by WSUS.

By the way, I only work at this location once a week (tuesdays, well thursdays too, but I'm next door to this building, but I have remote access), so bare with me on trying to fix things.

Ok, for the sake of completeness, I have completed the instructions given by Miya Yao.
After stopping the Windows Update Service (from an Admin Command prompt window), renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder to SDold, then starting the update service again, I still receive the same error when checking for updates.
The windows update log shows this (starting from about 4am) and I just reset the service at about 9:10, which you can see in the log.

Each time I attempt to download the new itunes 10.5 I keep getting the following error message:

Any Ideas of how to solve this one?

After reading all these posts, one by one did not resolve my problem until I got the very end. Regardless of what step would resolve your problem, these are the steps I would recomment to everyone for a what seems to be a safe and fool-proof upgrade to iTunes 10.5.
1. Stand alone upgrade to the latest Quicktime version
2. Go to control panel and "change" then select repair to the following applications in the order specified by the post on Oct 27. (Notice I skipped Quicktime because it had been upgrade manually,and Bonjour did not have a "repair" option)
iTunes; Apple Software Update: Mobile Device Support; Apple Applications Support
Some of these applications may not appear if they do not apply to your configuration (no iPhone, or no iPad, or other apple devices).
Once all updated, I did not need to restart nor launch any applications, I simply went straight into the 10.5 upgrade, and where it normally got stuck, this time the installation continued for a while longer until it completed successfully.

Windows 8.1 Update VLSC ISO windows update error

I have a downloaded version of Windows 8.1 Update 1 from the VLSC and Windows Update fails after a clean install. I've installed it on different systems and multiple fail with the same error (80072EFE). The weird thing is that it works fine against our
WSUS server just not checking online. There isn't anything blocking the connection to Windows Update so not sure what is going on.

Solution for AAM Updater Error : U44M1I210

After getting Creative Cloud a couple of days ago then running into Updater Error U44M1l210 over and over and making the mistake of calling tech support (which was no help - "just reset it / download from the site" - even though resetting does nothing and the site doesn't have all the updates AAM does), I've finally got a working solution.
Essentially it's a permissions issue. Not sure why it affects some and not others, but I was logged in as an administrator and it still failed to have permissions to update despite admin password entry.
So, here's what you do. You need to open AAM and Update with superuser permissions.
1. Open Terminal
2. Copy and Paste the following, then hit enter:
sudo "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE/PDApp/core/Adobe Application Manager.app/Contents/MacOS/PDApp"
3. It will prompt you for your password, enter it.
4. The Adobe Application Manager will open with sudo (elevated/superuser) permissions.
5. Open one of your Creative Cloud programs.
6. Go to Help>Update...
7. The updater dialog will open. Update as normal, it will work this time.

After multiple phone calls and emails to tech support about this issue I was hoping that this would solve the issue for me. I've tried command line fixes a few times now and like the others this one doesn't fix the issue for me.
Still get:
There was an error installing this update. Please quit and try again later. Error Code: U44M1I210
I can install applications but can't update them (OSX 10.9). I guess I could delete and install each time there is an update, but major PITA.
Unfortunately calling Adobe tech support is a very frustrating experience. I've had dropped calls, had to repeat my information every time (spelling out each letter of my email address with a word) and finally get offered the same solution that doesn't work.
