[SOLVED] Weird keyboard mapping issue (not hardware)

Hi all,
I'm not a fan of posting in forums, as i usually always find my solution on other topics or fix it myself after hard work. But this time i must admit, this goes beyond my competence (although i'm pretty sure it's a stupid thing i havent thought of lol)
Alright, here it is. After a power failure, i had to reboot... but i had made some nvidia ( -> 195.36) and kernel ( -> 2.6.34) upgrades meanwhile, and i couldn't boot anymore. I fixed that by downgrading, then X didn't want to start so i did the same on nvidia.
Since then, my keyboard layout is messed up. My right alt key behaves as the left arrow (although the left arrow still fonctions well). The down arrow generates down keypress as usual, but followed by a "enter". For example, here is the result of xev after pressing the alt key:
KeyRelease event, serial 46, synthetic NO, window 0x2000001,
    root 0x142, subw 0x0, time 133186949, (-682,-202), root:(398,157),
    state 0x0, keycode 113 (keysym 0xff51, Left), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
I tried "kdb" and "Keyboard" in xorg.conf, both giving the same result. This is "not too bad", except that i'm a programmer, so i need my brackets lol I can do alt+bracket key... it works, but it generates a left arrow first, so it's kind of a waste of time.
The keyboard is not at fault, it works perfectly on my laptop (both on windows and ubuntu that are on my laptop... yuck lol). I even got a new keyboard yesterday (thanks to my boss stepping on the other one), and it has the exact same behavior... so i doubt it's hardware issue.
Well, that's my situation... and i gave up lol don't know what else to test, so i hoped some1 else would come up with some genius idea.
Thanks in advance!
Jni
PS: sorry for my english hehe

I used to have Xorg-1.8 but i had to downgrade along with nvidia, due to nvidia 190 requiring xorg < 1.8 :
X.Org X Server 1.7.6
Release Date: 2010-03-17
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.33-ARCH x86_64
Current Operating System: Linux jni-desktop 2.6.32-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 23 19:43:46 CET 2010 x86_64

Build Date: 01 April 2010  05:28:33PM
Current version of pixman: 0.18.2
    Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
    to make sure that you have the latest version.
So i never really had time to see if keyboard with 1.8 was working, nvidia wudnt start and i found on forum that i had to downgrade it for now, error with the new .34 kernel.
xf86-input-evdev is installed, but i cannot find it's config file. I don't have a xorg.conf.d directory, all i have is a xorg.conf. Here is my xorg.conf, if that can be of any use...

  • Bluetooth keyboard mapping issues with iPad (3rd gen) after iOS 6.1.2 upgrade

    Others may have figured this out more readily than I did, but since I did not find a post on this topic, I decided I would provide this information.
    After upgrading my iPad "3" to iOS 6.1.2, my bluetooth keyboard mapping was a bit off.  Hitting most keys provided the desired result but not all.
    Typing \ would result in ] for example.  Typing shift + 2 would result in " rather than the expected (and marked) @.
    To fix this I tried turning Bluetooth off and on, etc.  No joy.
    FinaIly, I went into "Settings," selected "Bluetooth," selected "Apple Wireless Keyboard," clicked on "Forget this Device."
    I then powered off the iPad and the bluetooth keyboard.  Next, I powered on the iPad and keyboard and went back into "Settings" where I paired the keyboard with the iPad again.  Everything then worked as desired.
    It's possible, that you may not need to go to the trouble of powering off and on the iPad and the keyboard.  Simply "forgetting" the device and then pairing the keyboard with the iPad again may suffice.

    Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon.  The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
    Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A."  The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC.  Do NOT use an iPhone charger.  Do NOT use an iPod charger.  Do NOT use a computer's USB port.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
    I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
    For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
    Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

  • WiFi loss & battery drain a software issue, not hardware

    I wrote the commentary below after installing IOS 7 on a 4S and resultantly losing WiFi entirely and enduring major battery drain issues. After two trips to the Apple store and meeting with their techs at the "genius" bar, I was emphatically told that the issues were entirely hardware related and the only solution was to purchase a new phone. I was told there was nothing more to be done because the hardware was defective... either just use the not-so-smart phone as it is or buy a new smart one.
    Well, here's an update on that story. I installed 7.0.4 last night and instantly my WiFi was back on and working. So far today, the battery seems to be back to normal as well, not draining like a giant hole in the levee. I don't know if this will be the same story for anyone else with similar problems. But I can say that the hardware-caused-storyline was bogus. Entirely time coincident with a software update (IOS 7), I lost WiFi and battery. And equally relative to the 7.0.4 update I immediately regained WiFi and battery.
    I'm curious if others have experienced this same thing? And if Apple has an official explanation?
    Oct 14, 2013 12:37 PM
    I  had a perfectly functioning iPhone 4S (64 GB) that I have been very   happy with and has always been glitch-free, good battery time, no   complaints. Until installing IOS 7.
    Among other things, immediately upon "upgrading" to IOS 7 I have lost WiFi entirely (button greyed out).
    Next, I found the battery drains to the point where I have to keep it   charging 2-3 times per day with extremely small phone usage. In a  normal  day, with 2-3 text messages, checking email 3-4 times and no  phone  calls, I am down to 30% battery by 3pm. Two days ago I turned  airplane  mode on at 9am with 98% battery and by 4pm batter was at 45%  with  airplane mode still on.
    There are other problems, but those are the two primary issues.
    I   went to the Apple store two times. The first time the technician   verified my problem, said there was nothing that could be done because   it's a hardware problem now and I would have to buy a new phone at full   price (my current cell contract isn't up until March 2014). He  suggested  a complete phone reset to "new phone" which I did and which  solved  nothing whatsoever. Same issues exist.
    On  my second  trip to Apple just yesterday the technician looked it over,  checked the  battery function, etc. and I was told that the battery is  fine but that  the processor or something in the phone is working  overtime and draining  the battery. And again, I was told there is  nothing Apple can do other  than swap out the phone, though, this time  they would replace it for  $199.
    I  was tempted to pay the $199 for a new 4S  that the technician said  would come with IOS 6. But so far I have  refused that offer without  some assurance that future IOS upgrades  wouldn't harm that phone as  well. Also, if I paid this now, then I  wouldn't upgrade when my  contract ended with Verizon and I was looking  forward to perhaps  getting a 5S then. I know that it's impossible to  assure that these  upgrade issues won't happen again to the next phone,  which finally  leads me to my questions...
    Considering   the options I've been given thus far, what would someone more in the   know suggest I do? Is there any possibility of a software fix or did  the  "upgraded" software probably ruin the hardware?
    As   a longtime Apple fan and someone who has owned the first Mac laptop  and  early desktops, I don't understand why Apple doesn't have better   customer service policies regarding their own software directly   affecting their own hardware adversely.

     I have the same problem with WiFi and off, the issue was Google Play services, this is what I did settings > apps > all > google play services > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > update the app > check again .

  • Keyboard Mapping Issue Discovered & Fixed

    I noticed while re-installing all of my software (after this fresh POS operating system required a clean install) that my serial numbers were not being recognized despite the visible and correct digits being displayed. After attempting to install CS2 repeatedly, this fact occurred to me - I'm using a Logitech keyboard & mouse combo, but hadn't installed the driver. After installing Loepard, my keyboard wasn't recognized, so I was prompted to press the key to the Left and Right of the shift keys for recognition. While this mapped the functional part of the keyboard, it didn't necessarily allow for proper function. After installing the drivers from the factory disk, everything worked fine (the keyboard & mouse that is, not the OS). So now I can install stuff properly. Unfortunately, the other bugs Apple chose not to work out prior to release have rendered my computer essentially useless. For this, I'll refer to this new OS as Leotard in all future posts - a frilly costume that otherwise serves no useful function. Rock on, Apple! Can I have my money back?

    Then, download and install the 10.5.8 COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, the consider doing an Archive & Install installation. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 refers.

  • [solved] weird keyboard behaviour

    Hi,
    i do have a strange problem with my keyboard. Sometimes (i can't reproduce this) the keyboard hangs. For example: if i type an 'a' i get a lot of 'a's on my screen. This is not limited to letters, same happens when pressing the 'enter' or 'backspace' or multimedia-keys.
    The magic stops when pressing 'esc'.
    A college has the same problem, so i believe that my keyboard is not broken.
    kernel: Linux malcolm 2.6.30-ARCH
    xorg-server: 1.7.2-2
    I couldn't find anything related in the logs.
    Any ideas?

    same for me, for about one week, on 2 different systems. I'm using KDE4 but some other people reported this problem on Gnome too. It generally stops when I strike the key again a few times.
    It happened when I showed someone how cool Linux was, and then it opened 60 occurences of the same images I wanted to cut and paste...

  • Weird Keyboard Backlight Issue

    I'm having a weird problem with keyboard backlighting on my new Macbook pro. In my personal account, I'm unable to adjust the keyboard backlighting using the function keys. No amount of diddling with the preferences will allow me to get this working. However, if I create a new account on the same machine, everything works normally.
    As I've migrated from a Powerbook G4 to a Macbook and now to a Macbook Pro, my hunch is that some old preferences still remain on this machine that are conflicting with how it operates. Can anyone tell me how to reset the appropriate preference files so my keyboard backlight will work correctly?

    Hi, Michael -
    In theory, what you propose should work.
    However, you may be pushing the limit for cable length -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=31116
    There are ways around that. One is to use an active extender cable, such as one like this -
    http://www.usbgear.com/usa/item_49.html
    It is best to eliminate connections wherever possible - each connection is a possible source of corrosion or dirt, which can cause noise; or fault, which can cause loss of connection.

  • Weird keyboard extension issue.

    i need to do this FAST. shipping anything would be bad, i'm in the middle of building my recording studio and i'm hung up.
    what i'm trying to do:
    besides the keyboard/mouse hooked up to my Sawtooth G4 with 9.x i want to run a SECOND keyboard/mouse through the wall using a wall plate, into my vocal booth. the wall plate i have, has a FEMALE usb input on the back. This means i need about an 11-14ft regular male A to male A usb cable. I CAN"T FIND ONE ANYWHERE!
    i can't do wireless (from what i've read) cuz i'm in os9. otherwise i would.
    HERE is my latest idea, that i think i will try. . . will this work?
    buy a proper length male A to male B cable(at my local Staples). then use one of these female B to female A adaptors in place of whats on the wall plate.
    http://www.vpi.us/usb-gender.html
    maybe if i can find the proper length extender i can take out the adaptor in my wall plate, and somehow glue the new cable in there, and make it look nice.
    any suggestions QUICK!

  • SGD 4.6 and Mac OSX 10.6.5 / Keyboard mapping problem

    Dear all
    With Mac Clients we have the problem that Keyboard mapping does not work correctly:
    Swiss German Umlaute like ö ä ü don't appear if we don't specify the xdeswiss.txt keyboard map file under SecurID User Profile - Client Device (we've tried the option Client's Input Locale).
    Now the problem is that we also have Users from Spain, UK, France connection to the same SGD also using the SecurID User profile....
    Anyone an idea how to solve this?
    Best regards
    Werner

    The regular Mac OS X 10.46 updater will only update Mac OS X 10.45. The combo Mac OS X 10.46 updater will update 10.4 through 10.44 as well as 10.45. When performing troubleshooting or replacing missing software components on your computer, it may be useful to rerun the combo updater. If you will be updating from 10.45 to 10.46, you should use the regular updater, as it is a smaller download.

  • Messed Up Keyboard Mapping, not an Software Issue

    Greetings Folks!
    I've been having a strange problem with my keyboard; the keyboard mapping is all messed up!
    I was writing a piece of work this afternoon, and had to go out for couple of hours. I put my Macbook Pro into sleep and gone out. When I returned, I seemed to having problem logging in again. Tried to log in to guest account, all worked normal. I did some trials, apparently my keyboard mapping got screwed. All keys are working but all address strange letters, like Kyrilic or Scandinavian letters. Function keys are OK, I can adjust the brightness, etc, touchpad is fine, but no text.
    I'm practically locked out of my account. Only one thing is the extreme slowness of stacks. It takes forever icons to pop out, everything else seems fine. All software work, everything is OK, and local keyboard mapping settings seems fine.
    Any suggestions?

    Yeah, keyboard is messed up, it was an hardware issue.
    I've stopped by in my Apple Store and told them about the problem. They were very kind, and I handed my Macbook Pro over. The have examined it, and delivered to me shortly. According to the service document, one of the function keys struck somehow, altering the whole mapping of keyboard. They have changed it, and my Mac runs like new.
    Thanks for tips mate.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop keyboard stopped working. Not even in BIOs or LiveCd..

    Solution posted below, in #3
    ===================================
    ORIGINAL POST
    ===================================
    Ok, so, my laptop seems fried in the sense that I cannot type with the keyboard no matter what media I use. I've tried LiveCDs, LiveUSB images, my regular internal HDD..   nothing seems to work.
    History of Issue:  I did a fresh install and immediately installed the kernel26-bfs kernel image. All went well. I tested a few things and did another fresh install (just because I like having a clean slate when experimenting) and installed the kernel26-bfs kernel image again. All seemed fine. Rebooted, shutdown and power upped a few times. Still good, so I shut down the laptop for the day and went to bed. (changed NO config files) Next morning I woke up and turned on the computer, which took a lot longer than usual. I found that when prompted at Lilo boot screen I couldn't type "bfs" (my kernel image named) but it ended up booting it anyway (after 50 seconds) since it was my default image. During the startup sequence it freaks out and kernel panics, trying to look for "device 802", whatever the heck that is. I don't know where it got that from since I had rebooted, etc, the previous day where it looked for "device /dev/sda2".  So it shows a bunch of "kernel panic" lines and comes to a halt.
    Here's what it says when it boots, where the errors come in:
    Waiting 10 seconds for device 802..
    Root device '802' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it
    /bin/mknod /dev/root b 8 2
    :: Initramfs Completed - control passing to kinit
    IP-Config: no device to configure
    Waiting 0 s before mounting root device...
    kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(8,2)
    kinit: init not found!
    Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    Pid: 1, comm: kinit Not tainted 2.6.30-ARCH #1

    [<ffffffff80253df2>] ? sys_exit+0x22/0x30
    [<ffffffff8020c442>] ? system_call_fastpath+0x16/0x1b
    That's what the kernel says, anyway. This could be the issue for my HARDWARE? Even without trying to boot Arch, I'm still unable to type. So,....
    Anyway, I manually had to power down my laptop and I put in a LiveCD (Knoppix), it still wouldn't let me type with my keyboard, so I had to manually power down again. I tried the Arch LiveUSB image. Still nothing. I tried everything I could think of. I can't even hit the F9, F10, etc, keys during laptop start to enter my BIOS. I noticed a weird delay that I never had before. Usually when I start my laptop it would show the Hewlett-Packard BIOS Help screen immediately, but during that first morning when things went awry, it delays about 10-15 whole seconds before showing the HP screen.
    SO, my question is...  does it seem like my laptop had a hardware failure? Or do you think my MBR was seriously 'harmed' somehow? I can't access any log files seeing as I can't TYPE anything on that laptop. So, I'm kind of screwed when it comes to providing detail. I've had this laptop about 8 months, new w/o box, or so they say..   I may end up getting a new laptop if I can't fix this.

    Ok, I guess it was a BIOS and/or motherboard related issue. How I solved this (for future readers of this issue) is by taking out the battery-pack and leaving it out for about 5 minutes, then, right before I put the battery-pack back in, I hold the Power button on my laptop (without the battery in it) for about 30 seconds, then I put the battery-pack into my laptop again and Power it on. The laptop boots quickly and I'm able to use keyboard again to enter BIOs and/or enter my Arch partition using LiLo. This solution was a way of resetting the motherboard.
    I'm marking this solved as this solution solved my situation. May not be for everyone. Thanks for your help MadTux. Topic can be closed if needed.

  • XFCE issues - HAL/shutdown; startxfce from non-root; keyboard maps

    Today I finally decided to get rid of Ubuntu on my desktop machine and installed Archlinux.
    I want to have XFCE running on it and in general its running quite nicely.
    [ignore this paragraph]
    Yet I can't use restart/shutdown my comp from within Archlinux using that power off button. I get an error stating that HAL is either not permitting to shutdown/reboot the computer, or that it's not available.
    [/stop ignoring it here]
    Also my keyboard map in XFCE is different than the one I use outside X (I have a UK keyboard layout; in the shell without a desktop environment everything is right). Why is that? Where can I change it?
    Also I Arch installed on my laptop. Initially I used OpenBox, but now I wanted to try XFCE on it too. But here I can't start xfce from my user account (from root or with sudo though it works). I get an error stating "Unable to access file /home/user/.ICEauthority: Permission denied".
    EDIT: Alright, the HAL issue is solved for whatever reason. Seems like a restart did it.
    Last edited by Stalafin (2007-11-26 18:45:11)

    The solution to the startxfce problem is to change the owner.
    sudo chown -R youruser /home/user/.ICEauthority
    The -R flag will performe the change recursively
    If you ever log in as root again, or using sudo, you will have to change the owner again.

  • Weird dreamweaver keyboard mapping problem

    weird dreamweaver keyboard mapping problem:

    I was having a weird problem in dreamweaver... Whenever I was

    would paste from the clipboard.
    I finally figured out what was happening. I compared the
    menu.xml in my app support folder in the user library to the
    original menu.xml file that was in the application folder. I went
    through until I came across the diff:
    menu.xml in my library/app support folder:

    <shortcut key="Cmd+Ins" name="Copy2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCopy()) { dw.clipCopy() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Copy2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Ins" name="Paste2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipPaste()) { dw.clipPaste() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Paste2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Del" name="Cut2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCut()) { dw.clipCut() }" domRequired="FALSE"
    id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Cut2" />
    orig menu.xml file:
    <!-- Windows Navigation Shortcuts -->
    <shortcut key="Cmd+Ins" name="Copy2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCopy()) { dw.clipCopy() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Copy2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Ins" name="Paste2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipPaste()) { dw.clipPaste() }"
    domRequired="FALSE" id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Paste2" />
    <shortcut key="Shift+Del" name="Cut2" platform=""
    command="if (dw.canClipCut()) { dw.clipCut() }" domRequired="FALSE"
    id="DWShortcuts_HTMLSource_Cut2" />
    There was a diff in the "platform=" tags. The orig stated
    [platform="win"], my config stated [platform=""] (nothing in
    between the ""'s). So, I reset the platform tag to be
    [platform="win"] in my settings and then relaunched dreamweaver. It
    fixed the problem.
    Not sure how this occurred, but it works now.

  • Google Map Issue in OBIEE - Subject area not getting associated

    Hi Gurus,
    We are trying to integrate Google map and OBIEE via mapviewer. We have done the following already -
    1. Loaded World Sample data from Navteq.
    2. Configured mapviewer source and added Google map as a tile layer with the API KEY.
    3. Imported one layer (e.g. M_STATES_ABRV) in OBIEE and linked it with BI subject area (tried this step with importing other layers as well)
    4. Added background map.
    Now , in this step when we add the layer in the map, we select M_STATES_ABRV and change zoom levels. But Once we come back to main screen after Clicking OK, we see the background map is not associated with the subject area. Hence any map view report creation with this subject area fails.
    We have the tried the same theme with Oracle Maps (internal type like WORLD  MAP or DEMO MAP), it works fine. only Google Map gives this issue.
    This was not expected. Please suggest what we missed. We tried with cache clear, tile delete and recreation, service restart almost everything .
    We looked into other threads in this community, different oracle support documents - Doc ID 1485088.1,Doc ID 1346805.1 etc  and in different internet blogs -  where it's easy as child's play, but we are still out of luck.
    OBIEE version - 11.1.1.7.140527
    Environment- windows server 2008 R2
    Please suggest.
    Regards,
    Krish

    I have found the solution: You need to *select* zoom levels for the BI Layer.  When a BI Layer is added to a background map, by default no zoom layers are selected.  Once a zoom level is selected, the BI Layer will save.
