[SOLVED] Why do closed nvidia graphic drivers consume so much RAM?

I'm using nvidia Geforce 7600GT graphic card, and I tried to install nvidia-304xx graphic drivers. Everything went smoothly, but after my system started I saw that there is 4x times more RAM consumption when compared it to nouveau driver. See the following pics:
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/7117/starto.png
up: nouveau || down: nvidia
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/148/graphicq.png
left: nouveau || right: nvidia
I've been trying to solve this issue for 2 weeks, but I have no idea why my system consumes almost 400 MiB of RAM when only openbox is started. Compared to debian + full gnome -- 280MiB. Both systems are using the same nvidia driver. I tried even to borrow the kernel from debian and then install the drivers, but this doesn't help. Still apps in the graphic environment consume several times more RAM.
As you can see, having only 1GiB of RAM I can't afford to have 400MiB openbox. Try to think about opening web browser or other apps. xD
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it? I saw similar thread on this forum, but I can't find it anymore, and there was exactly the same situation, or more or less.

Vorbis, you're my savior! It works.
I changed some stuff since then, but I had 90 MiB graphic environment (nouveau). Now I have 129.0 MiB (nvidia) -- it's 40 MiB more, but I can live with that. And of course, it is not 300+ MiB.

  • Why is Microsoft Mashup Evaluation Container consuming so much RAM

    Hi -
I am working with multiple large csv source files in power query. All of my queries are disabled by default during development and I load them to the data model when testing, and then unload them. My workbook is about 40KB in size.
But when I open the workbook and I click on "Enable Content" for External Data Connections (queries still disabled) I will see 4 or sometimes 6 Microsoft Mashup Evaluation Container tasks (Microsoft.Mashup.Container.NetFX40.exe) in the
    Task Manager, each consuming 200-250MB.
Can you please tell me what these tasks are for? Why are they started with this workbook?
    Thank you,
    Rory

I'm having the same problem with a CSV source. I have a lot of Power Query steps, but each step is simple.
There are only a couple hundred rows in the CSV file, but I get three separate
Microsoft.Mashup.Container.NetFX40.exe files running that together take up 75% of my CPU as soon as I open the Excel file.
They never free up the CPU. I even let it run overnight, but they continue to use 75% the next morning.

  • Is it safe to update the nVidia graphics drivers for WinXP on Bootcamp?

    Hello again,
Is it safe to update the nVidia graphics drivers for WinXP on Bootcamp?

YES we are both stating the same thing however in different terms. You will be fine with the updates that you are talking about. Just ensure that the drivers that you are updating match the make/model of your graphics adapter.
If something doesn't work out then you can always revert back to the previous driver.

  • Firefox consumes too much RAM, caused by js

I'm having problems with Firefox consuming too much RAM memory. Several people are complaining about this but I did some further research before posting here, using about:memory, and I found out that js-non-window and js-main-runtime are causing this.
When I start up a blank Firefox session I immediately have an allocation of 260MB of RAM. About 75-80% of this is taken up by those two js (javascript?) processes.
After opening about 10 tabs with different webpages the RAM usage has gone up to about 750MB. During the time the tabs are open most of the extra MB's are consumed by the window-objects (40MB per page, still seems quite a lot to me for just a news site with one article...) but after closing them the memory usage didn't go down and it transferred to the two already mentioned js processes. This transfer to the js processes is not always the case, it seems to happen only if I open a lot of tabs, let's say 10+ perhaps.
I tried disabling Javascript using the plugin SettingSanity, but this makes browsing quite uncomfortable of course and worst of all it doesn't solve the problem. The mentioned processes keep using the same amount of RAM.
I have this exact same problem on all my computers and laptops so it can't be a coincidence. Is there nothing I can do about this? Is this under investigation? How can a browser with 10 web pages open need almost 800MB of RAM?
And please don't answer "install more RAM". The pc I have most problems with has 2GB of physical RAM and I really do think that opening 10 web pages should be possible on such a computer. Doing the same in Internet Explorer consumes less than half the amount of RAM memory.
P.S: I sent this query using IE because I could't get to this page in Firefox. The "Ask This" button didn't work...

Try in Firefox's safe mode disable all plugins, and open with only a new tab set by using ''about:blank'' . As suggested above also consider as a test creating and using a new Firefox profile.
When I start like that I have around 70MB explicit shown in ''about:memory'' and that includes ''js-non-window'' of around 30MB
I know in the past I have opened more than 10 tabs on a machine with less than 1GB ram installed and not noticed problems.

  • Why aren't Nvidia graphics available on 2-in-1s or tablets?

Why aren't Nvidia Quadro or FireGL drivers available as an option on custom 2-in-1 laptops such as the Envy x360?
I am an architecture student and the programs that I use on a daily basis use OpenGL graphics and Intel Graphics cards are not high enough quality an AMD Graphics drivers are incompatible. I love the idea of being able to lay my touch screen down flat and drawing on it like a pad. There are some many applications for a feature like this in my profession.
Even if you adjusted the Omen or Envy 15t (since the num-pad is an ideal keyboard feature) laptop screen to hinge back like the x360 I would gladly pay extra for the ability to lay it flat like a tablet or 2-in-1.
I love the style and sleekness of HP computers and your customer service. Hopefully HP can lead the way and drive the market into making higher performing pcs with continually increasing flexibility.

I got one word for you: heat. 3D graphics rendering does a lot of "work" in the physics sense and generates a lot of heat. Computer makers barely can handle it in a laptop and there has not yet been a tablet issued with a workstation-level video card. Maybe someday soon. The idea to put a 360 screen on a laptop with a good video card is intriguing and I don't know why something like that has not come out. My guess is that the manufacturers look at cost vs. how many such units they really would sell and the numbers do not add up.

  • How do I update my Nvidia graphics drivers on Bootcamp using Windows 8.1

    Hey all,
I have been running bootcamp with my MacBook Pro with retina display, mid 2013 model for quite some time, but only recently did the windows 8.1 update from windows 8. I have been prompted by some games, namely Fifa 15, to update to the latest Nvidia graphics driver. Now, i know that just downloading the driver from the website is bad as bootcamp needs to run on the drivers anyway, so how do I update these drivers? and what is the latest set of apple support drivers for my model, because I keep seeing different ones everywhere. also i would rather not wait for an update on the part of apple support drivers.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many Thanks,
    Sam

Please see Huge lag in games on bootcamp as a reference. The linked thread is for a GT750m.
Since there are no mid-2013 Retina models (as per Apple - Support - Technical Specifications), assuming this is your Mac - MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) - Technical Specifications - the same should work for you.

  • Not Able To Install Nvidia Graphics Drivers

    Hello all!
This past week I just finished putting my new system together with a K8N Diamond Plus. Only major problem right now is i am not able to install Nvidia's drivers. Below are my components...
    XP 64-Bit Edition
    MSI K8N Diamond Plus
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
    BFG 7900 GTX 512MB
    1 Gig Coirsar Ram
2 Wester digital HD in Raid 0
When I try and install the graphics drivers i get the message " The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
I used the chip set drivers listed here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=710&kind=1
Also I have tried the ones from NVIDIA's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp64_x16_6.83
The graphics drivers i used are from NVIDIA's site: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_81.98.html
BFG Tech support guy had me look under display adapters in device manager. It only has Standard VGA Graphics Adapter listed. He said I did not have my chip set drivers installed (though i have), or the motherboard was not recognizing it. Also he said they do not support XP-64 and would not offer me any more support so long as i run it.
I just can not believe that XP 64, 7900 GTX, and this great K8N Diamond Plus can not get along.
Any advice anyone has for getting my Diamond Plus and my graphics card to jive together would be greatly appricated.
    Thankyou all!!

Thankyou guys for the responses. I was able to find drivers that worked with my card here..
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?drivers&series=80&os=2&type=1&dir=1
Now my only current issue left is that I have no sound. It is enabled in the BIOS, installed the 64-bit drivers from MSI site, tired installing drivers off disk. Any suggestion?

  • Y410P Nvidia graphics drivers crash when gaming

Hello everyone. I'm having an issue with my IdeaPad Y410P where the graphics drivers for the system's GT750M will randomly crash. A search turned up this thread but it was of no help. Some details:- Problem began this May.- Problem does not occur after a specific period of time. It may happen after 5 minutes of gaming or an hour.- Problem occurs regardless of driver version, or whether I'm using Nvidia drivers or official Lenovo drivers.- Problem occurred in two Windows 8.1 installations and still occurs in Windows 10.- Problem occurs regardless of GPU temperature - I have monitored the system using GPU-Z and have not found any trends.- Problem occurs regardless of game played.- System usually recovers but game remains totally frozen after crash. At this point I'm starting to suspect that the graphics card itself is at fault. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

Uninstall the currently installed version and and install the 6.14.0.104 version using the download links provided here:

  • Why is ArchLinux consuming so much RAM?

I really don't know where to start with this thread.  Hoping a few of you veterans will be able to help pinpoint my memory consumption by ArchLinux.   I have read lots of places where ArchLinux runs with a very small memory footprint, but that hasn't been my experience, which is tragic becuase I really like ArchLinux the most of all the distros I've tried.
I don't have anything that usual installed, I don't think.  If I go from a fresh boot up, my experience is that I end up using about 400MB out of the 768 MB total physical memory (eventually my system will slow to a crawl with about 95% of RAM used).  And I'm not really doing much.  A little Audacious, a little file mgmt with Thunar, a little web browsing...that's it really.  I expected some rogue application to be to blame but that doesn't seem to be the case.   It appears to be XFCE stuff mostly (and Thunar).  Here's what my system shows right now if I do

I'm astounded that xfce-related items would consume so much memory.  Also, Tomboy and Firefox really eat up memory in a hurry.  Thunar, too.  Is this normal?   Doesn't seem like it should be...
Oh, fyi, the daemons loaded at startup are:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa hplip cups hal)
Any help would be appreciated here.  I can send over any specifics about my system or outputs of a command as needed for remote troubleshooting.  Thanks!

If it never exceeds 95% , I don't see why there should be any slow downs.
Does it swap ? Thats much more important to check than the memory usage (even if its obviously linked).
If a lot of swap is used, then it's very bad indeed, and you're left with the two obvious choices :
    1) get more memory
    2) use less memory hungry apps
Recently, I set up Ubuntu (which is more bloated than Arch, with a ton of unneeded crap by default) on a box with 256 MB.
Just booting into an empty gnome session filled up all ram. Then trying to start OpenOffice made the system swap badly,
    and it was very slow.
I upgraded it to 512 mb, and everything is fine now.
So I find it strange that 768 mb can't handle arch + xfce.

  • Qosmio X300 - new nvidia graphic drivers are uninstallable: no nvidia chip

    hello,
i have the qosmio X300-14P with windows 7..
i play actual games (f.e. skyrim) which need the LATEST video driver!
the x300 is said to have a nvidia geforce 9800M GTX video chip.
however, when i download the latest driver (295.73 today), at installation it says :
no nvidia hardware detected - unable to install !
    =====================================
this is so with all nvidia drivers in the last 2 years (with windows 7 and windows vista alike) !
    what is the problem ?
did toshiba not include an nvidia chip, but a cheap chinese noname chip, or what is the problem here ?
whatever notebook i had before the toshiba, it would accept actual nvidia drivers.
only the toshiba qosmio x300 doesnt.
    why ?
it is vital that i install the latest drivers, how can i get by this problem ?
the driver that toshiba offers for the qosmio x300 is almoust 3 years old (2009, now it is 2012!) -
    this is ridiculous!
an actual video/graphics driver is urgently needed, it is vital that the nvidia drivers work.
    i ask toshiba :
HOW can i get the latest nvidia driver to work in the qosmio x300-14P ?
which is said to have a geforce 9800M GTX nvidia chip (though nvidia driver says : it does'nt).
how can i get the latest `nvidia drive (295.73)r to work ?
    thank you
    q.

thanks for the answers to all, especially blob.
yes i am a gamer and therefore i need always the very latest graphics driver.
(yes, skyrim runs, but not with highest settings of course).
but i am about to buy a new notebook soon anyway.
this branding is a problem i came across earlier with the toshiba ram already.
that's the reason why this time i dont buy a new toshiba notebook anymore,
    i will switch to lenovo.
i thought about the qosmio x770, as it has some nice features.
but they removed firewire etc., well ok, i could maybe live with that,
BUT i CANNOT live without an express card slot !
the xpress card slot is vital, as only there you can expand your notebook.
missing firewire could be corrected by a firewire express card, i always
use e-sata hdd connections, so i have an express card with 2 esata ports
(to have faster hdd writings). one internal esata port (even a combo port esata/usb2)
is just not eno8gh for me, i have usually connected 2 or 3 external drives.
as well i quite often use my express tv + video card.
that a notebook at this price has no express card slot is unbelievable !
this is a knockout feature for me.
i can swallow a lot, but not a missing express card slot, as this is the only feature
that makes it possible to expand a laptop (with a e-sata card, with a tv card, f.e.).
and so i could switch my tvc card and my esata card and whatever else i need
    or might need later.
i might have purchased the x770 had it an express card slot, but without
it is so ridiculous that i would never buy it, no matter how good the other features are.
an express card slot is VITAL for every notebook.
that someone could spare it it like selling a rain jacket without a zip.
too bad, because else the x770 is not so bad.
i wonder what made them cut the express card out in a notebook
    (that is not expand-friendly anyway).
i saw that some others companies did it as well.
this will not be a fortune, as i foresee that many people will, if not at once, then later
hate the missing express card slot.
it was about time that they put good graphic cards in notebooks (while once they are branded,
they are a hassle, good or not), and now they start cutting the vital express card slot.
unexpandable is the first that comes to my mind when i think about the x770.
the product designers at toshiba seem not to be very good.
branding, missing express card slots - what else may we have to expect in the future ?
i was about time to switch.

  • [SOLVED] Mid 2009 MBP - nvidia nonfree drivers

    - X server looking for nouveau
    Hi all
So this is my first post on here but I have been looking on the net to find a resolution to the following for the past week or more; I have been using Ubuntu for a number of years now but would still recon my experiance in linux is still in the realm of beginner.
I have a Mid 2009 MBP with Nvidia 9600m gt and 9400m; the problem i face is getting X to start.
NOTE: Currently I'm running Manjaro 3.10.30 (clean install) as it couldn't get the pure Arch live to boot, didn't have time to investigate that, maybe in the comming weeks.
The Xorg.0.log states that it is trying to load a nouveau module

I noticed just before grabbing my the above files/data via ssh that the /home/[username] directory is still the default user, "Manjaro" in this case. but this is probably in part due to X server not being able to start.
If anyone has any idea what direction i should take, please let me know. I have an image/backup of my Ubuntu 12.04 which i might have to restore to get the equivalent data, but i would rather fix this without it.
P.S. Not sure if this is the correct section for this topic.

This is one of them times I should have wrote down what steps i had completed and had not, I reread the information on this page, http://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title … on_Startup. Obviously i missed a vitel step while i was half asleep a few nights ago... Anyway This is solved.
P.S. I will be getting a refurbished Dell Latitude e7440 next week and I will be playing with it and a pure Arch experiance, can't wait. Catch you later.

  • HT3986 How do I update Windows7 64bit bootcamp NVIDIA graphic drivers? They seem to be way outdated.

    Verde 295.73 Driver
    Version: 295.73  WHQL
    Release Date: February 21, 2012

OK, I will try to explain it as best as I can. Get back to me if it works OK . This is to update the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M Version 295.73  drive for Windows 7 Professional 64bit bootcamp on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3.
_Go to.http://nvidia.com, select download drivers, select GeForce, click on Auto detect your GPU. Download the drivers, once downloaded run the installer ( I just did it all over again and when I ran it it installed the driver right away), you might or might not get an error saying it is not compatible, is OK. Now right click on your computer, click on Manage, click on Device Manager, then double click on Display adapters, right click on the adapter. Select Update Driver Software, CLick where it says Browse my computer for driver software. Then CLick where it says let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. CLick on Have Disk. Then Browse,
got to computer/C/NVIDIA/DisplayDriver/295.73/WinVista_Win7_64/International/Display.Dr iver click open the OK, then you will have a list with drivers, select the one for your computer and click next and install. You will get a windows saying it is not recommended to install blah blah, but if you want to update your driver just install it. I hope this work and good luck, let me know.

  • I have installed nvidia graphics drivers on windows 7 (bootcamp) now i can't use windows, it's just a black screen, how do i resolve this?

I have installed nvidia drivers from nvidias website for my geforce gt 650m on my early 2013 macbook pro retina 15", now i can't use windows in bootcamp, whenever i go into windows it turns into a black screen before i can see my desktop. How do i resolve this?

From the home screen, double click the home button to bring up the Recently used App list. Find the App with the problem and hold your finger on it untl the Apps start to shake. When that happens tap on the (x) on the right side corner of the app to close it.
Tap the home button again to get back to the home screen, and try to open the App again.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the iPad. (there should be no data loss):
Press and Hold the Power and home buttons until the Apple Logo shows up. Ignore any sliders that may appear.
When the iPad turns back on, try opening the App again.

  • Which MAC Pro graphics card and how much RAM for FCE HD usage?

I plan on purchasing a MAC Pro afer MacWorld Expo next month. Any recommendations for a specific graphics card that would complement my usage of Final Cut Express HD 3.5?
Also, should I increase my RAM? I currently use 2 gb of RAM on my G4. Will I see greater productivity if I bump it up to 4gb of RAM on the MAC Pro or will 2gb suffice which I had planned to increase it to from the standard 1gb supplied?
    PowerMAC G4 dual 1.42ghz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2gb RAM, 3-LaCie FW800 external drives
    PowerMAC G4 dual 1.42ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2gb RAM, 3-LaCie FW800 external drives

Any of the graphics cards that Apple sells for the Mac Pro will be fine. Personally, I'd suggest choosing one with at least 128MB video RAM, 256MB would be better.
2GB RAM in your Mac Pro will be more than enough for general purpose video editing. Going to 4GB will give you more oomph for RealTime effects and somewhat for rendering but you won't see a big difference in regard to capturing or general editing in the timeline.

  • [SOLVED] (None-issue) OpenBox seems to be using too much RAM

    Hey all,
I turned my computer on, and I decided to see what sort of RAM my lightweight Openbox install uses.
I opened a terminal, typed top, and saw the memory was almost 400mb...
I don't have any panels, or any Conky. I have a background, that's about it for eyecandy.
The odd thing is, in the list after the top command, nothing seems to be using anymore than 0.1% Memory (I have 4GB RAM)...
I did install KDE not long ago, but I thought I'd gotten rid of all that by now (My first thought was maybe some of the background processes from KDE were still installed), so I'm not sure what to think right now!
I know it's a ridiculously broad problem, but I can't help thinking it's probably something I've installed that came with a load of other stuff I wasn't interested in (I had that issue a bit ago, had lots of Gnome dependencies installed along with a program) But the only thing I can think of is KDE or Gnome stuff, both of which I'm about 99% sure i got rid of.
Is there any way I can check EXACTLY what's using my RAM? I know 400mb out of 4GB doesn't sound a whole lot, but considering I'm essentially running a blank screen I think it's a bit fishy!
    Thanks for any replies.

    Fastest reply ever!
    free -m
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:          3958        386       3572          0         23        172
    -/+ buffers/cache:        190       3768
    Swap:            0          0          0
That's about 2 minutes after a reboot, with no programs opened by me.
Like I said, 'top' command showed a nice long list of processes, none of which were breaking 0.1% MEM usage. X did pop up as 1.3% but then it'd disappear not long after.
