  • [SOLVED] wlan0 interface disappeared after installing compat

    Hello
    I was trying to fix the airmon-ng negative channel problem, and someone pointed me to "compat-wireless-patched", avail. in AUR, here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41472
    I installed this, makepkg -i etc., and rebooted.. now my wlan0 interface is gone, and I cannot use the wireless at all. It seems to have replaced:
    /lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl3945.ko
    And the other modules in above iwlwifi folder with it's own version or something.
    How do I restore the iwlwifi to get my wifi working again?
    I have tried downloading (from my Android phone, and mounting it in Arch):
    iwlwifi-3945-ucode-15.32.2.9-2-any.pkg.tar.gz
    linux-firmware-20100623-2-any.pkg.tar.xz
    wireless_tools-29-3-i686.pkg.tar.gz
    and mounting the phone in Arch to get them over there etc., but I guess I need to rebuild the modules again somehow. Right now I'm using the USB on the phone as internet.. madly slow :-(
    It appears the module is loaded too:
    michael@rawr ~> sudo modprobe -l | grep 3945
    kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl3945.ko
    Thanks for reading :-) - let me know if you need any more information and such.
    - m
    EDIT I ended up recompiling the kernel and wlan0 showed up again..

  • [SOLVED] How to create a wlan0 interface?

    Hello:
    I'm getting a lot of problem with my wireless card, as you can see in this post (unsolved).
    I installed the supposedly driver for my wireless card without result. Installed "WICD" -installed networkmanager, but never achieved to initialize the GUI- and just see my wired connections, not the wireless, mine or from others.
    I'm just wondering if the problem is that I do not have a "wlan0" interface in my "/etc/rc.conf". If that  is true, could I create one by myself? In the wiki there are many pages (wireless setup, beginners guide, etc) that makes some dispersion in the information and it is difficult to me to follow -and evaluate- That's why I'm asking for your support.
    My actual rc.conf -selected parts- is -notice that because WICD there are some "!", as the wiki suggested -:
    # Use 'ifconfig -a' or 'ls /sys/class/net/' to see all available interfaces.
    # Interfaces to start at boot-up (in this order)
    # Declare each interface then list in INTERFACES
    # - prefix an entry in INTERFACES with a ! to disable it
    # - no hyphens in your interface names - Bash doesn't like it
    # DHCP: Set your interface to "dhcp" (eth0="dhcp")
    # Wireless: See network profiles below
    #Static IP example

    I know this is not what you expect as a reply but anyway... I recently bought a very nice machine which is a Thinkpad x201i (the cheap version of the x201), great build quality, affordable price, perfect size and enough processing power. The problem is that it came with a realtek 8192se wireless card. It's everywhere on the internet: the driver sucks and it's only supplied by the vendor (so not in kernel tree, not even in staging). it costed me few bucks and 20 minutes of my time to replace it with an intel centrino advanced 6200N, I guess the Intel Centrino-N 1000 is even cheaper (saw it at less than USD15 on amazon). You'll get in-tree kernel drivers, injection support and all that fun stuff... I was happy to pay the extra money just thinking about the endless frustration I would have gotten with the realtek card. Not that compiling a driver makes me scared, but using a crappy driver is a pain.

  • [SOLVED]wlan0 up - Operation not possible due to RF-kill

    Hello everyone.
    I've encountered trouble trying to activate my wlan0 interface and I was wishing that someone here might be able to help me.
    $ip link
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default
    link/loopback
    2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether
    3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000
    link/ether
    My attempt at trying to activate wlan0 renders the following;
    $sudo ip link set wlan0 up
    RTNETLINK answers: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
    Unblocking everything with RF-Kill does not seem to change much in particular:
    $rfkill list all
    0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: no
    1: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: yes
    $sudo rfkill unblock all
    $rfkill list all
    0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: yes
    Hard blocked: no
    1: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes
    Enabling/Disabling the wifi-button on my keyboard only changes the Hard Blocked-parameter of hp-wifi. The Soft block remains unchanged regardless of me trying to unblock all with rfkill.
    The following is the output of dmesg | grep phy0
    $ dmesg | grep phy0

    It is worth mentioning that this problem has remained persistent throughout multiple linux distributions that I've tried on my laptop. The Wifi works fine in Windows 7 but as soon as I switch to any linux distro it stops working.
    I intend to put your advice to good use so any help would be very appreciated.

    As I can see you have two wireless interaces, when i see only phy0 with rfkill, it's maybe your hp-wifi that force to disable phy0 interace. I think if you blacklist the driver it might allow phy0 to be enabled.
    Please download and install lshw available in the community repo and enter in a terminal :
    $ lshw -c network

    Now it's stopped working for some reason and cannot even be detected, let alone configured:

  • No wlan0 interface, fresh arch linux install.

    Hi there,
    I'v installed finally arch linux on my box, and everything is fine, i configured well my system (after reeding the arch wiki installation guide) and now i'm with a # (no gui off course).
    I was trying to set up the wireless interface but when I type ifconfig the wlan0 doesn't show up, only  eth0 and lo

    (this is obvious)
    The strange "thing" is that when i type ifconfig  (on the live cd), I see the wlan0 interface and this doesn't show up on the hdd install.
    What should I do?
    PS: i have only wireless connection, now posting from an macBook

    Did you install the firmware package?  It loads automatically during install but only goes to the hard drive during install if you select it in the list of packages.  The package is called 'iwlwifi-3945-ucode'.
    Also, if you do a pacman -Syu, you'll update to the 2.6.32.2 kernel which has a bug.  With some access points, it will disassociate when the 3945 power management puts the card to sleep.  To work around this, as root type 'iwconfig wlan0 power off'.  this should be the default behavior in the next kernel update.  If you stay with 2.6.30 the 3945 should work fine.

  • Ralink Rt73 - No wlan0 interface with latest kernel *

    So, I update my kernel and I can no longer use my wireless card. It's not listed with ifconfig even though I'm loading all the necessary modules, those being: rt73usb, rt2x00usb, rt2x00lib
    I have no clue where I can go from here, besides downgrading the kernel...

  • [Solved] wlan0 dhcpd error, interface not configured

    Hi,
    I am trying to manually configure my wireless card to use dhcp.  I followed the wireless setup wiki page, installed the driver, added the module to rc.conf, and verified that it is working by running 'ifconfig -a' and 'iwlist wlan0 scan'.  So far so good.  My wireless network is WPA protected, so I set up wpa_supplicant according to that wiki page and that seems to be working too.  When I run 'dhcpd wlan0', I get error messages such as "No subnet declaration for wlan0" and "Not configured to listen on any interfaces".
    I tried setting up dhcpd.conf according to http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49114 and http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=49131, but neither worked.  I also tried adding wlan0 to the interfaces array in rc.conf (similarly to eth0--which works), but that didn't help either.
    I tried this on an open/unsecured network and got the same result.
    I found a Red Hat thread that said /etc/sysconfig/dhcpd needs to list the interfaces for dhcpd (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … es-372977/).  Is there something similar for arch?
    thanks in advance for any help,
    Kyle

    I played around with it a bit more last night and I got it to work.  For some reason, the subnets 129.168.0.x and 10.0.0.x didn't work and I needed to specify a subnet of 129.168.1.x.  I noticed that eth0 was getting assigned an IP of 192.168.1.100, so I decided to include that in my subnet.  I also restricted the range to 192.168.1.100-200.
    Thanks for the help,
    Kyle

  • [SOLVED] wlan0: unknown interface: No such device

    Got this error today while trying to sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
    It's probably because of some package update... reinstalling didn't work, and it's not a hardware problem (it works with a livecd). Someone managed to fix this problem with rfkill, but it didn't do anything when I tried...
    Any ideas?

  • [Solved] netcfg Network Unavailable.

    Hi,
    When trying to connect to a wireless network with netcfg it always fails with 'Network Unavailable'. Everything used to work with network-manager under Gnome.  Lsmod says the iwl3945 module is loaded and iwconfig says;
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"@Home94004"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=27 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    iwlist doesn't give any scan results but the XP laptop 10cm away can find the network. Network-manager also used to find the network.
    this is my profile;
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    SCAN="yes"
    SECURITY="wpa"
    ESSID="@Home94004"
    KEY="*********"
    IP="dhcp"
    TIMEOUT=30
    I'd appreciate some pointers on what to check next.
    Thanks.

  • [Solved] wlan0 carrier timed out - AR9285

    Good evening, fellows.
    I've been reading this forums for some time now, and I've decided to register and to post a problem that probably has a simpler solution than what I'm thinking about right now.
    So, I have a quick script for connecting to a WPA wlan0 address (home one), and I keep getting:
    dhcpcd[...]: version 5.5.6 starting
    dhcpcd[...]: wlan0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd[...]: timed out
    The script is:
    #!/bin/bash
    ip link set wlan0 down
    rm /var/lib/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-wlan0.lease
    rm /var/run/wpa_supplicant/wlan0
    iwconfig wlan0 channel auto
    ip link set wlan0 up
    wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    dhcpcd wlan0
    ip addr show wlan0
    The strange part comes when I'm trying to run this script, as it has been working flawlessly until yesterday. Do you see anything strange?
    lspci:
    02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)
    rc.conf daemons:
    DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng netfs sshd crond dbus)
    (I've never needed any type of modules or modprobe configuration for this)
    lsmod |grep ath:
    ath9k 92940 0
    ath9k_common 2096 1 ath9k
    ath9k_hw 358828 2 ath9k_common,ath9k
    ath 15393 3 ath9k_hw,ath9k_common,ath9k
    mac80211 396060 1 ath9k
    cfg80211 17621 3 mac80211,ath,ath9k
    Also, I'm not on a graphical interface, but a console-only view. (aka I have to startx to logon onto xfce, but I rarely do). I'm using 3.3.1-1-ARCH kernel, might this be the same problem as exposed here?

    Yup, I bet the one that I was quoting on the last sentence might be one of those, sorry for the duplicity. However, I'd probably wait until 3.4, as it's now on rc2 -- maybe there we'll have that issue solved on both sides.
    Thanks!

  • SOLVED wlan0 not found by ifconfig

    Network interface device is a wireless usb D-Link DWL-G122 C1.
    Laptop Dell Latitude C600
    kernel-2.6.24-ARCH
    I am new to Arch, with some Linux experience. Arch is nice and seems right for my old laptop, but this problem has stumped me. The wireless interface was working for a while then it just stopped coming up - I don't know what triggered the failure, maybe an upgrade, or perhaps deleting the old serialmonkey driver rt73 modules (which no longer worked with the new kernel but sometimes still loaded and needed a 'modprobe -r')
    [root@laptop ~]# ifconfig wlan0 up
    SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory
    But wlan0 shows up here
    [root@laptop ~]# cat /proc/net/wireless
    Inter-| sta-| Quality | Discarded packets | Missed | WE
    face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt frag retry misc | beacon | 22
    wlan0: 0000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    and also shows in in /proc/net/dev - along with lo and wmaster0.
    The driver modules seem to be present (modified list to reduce the post size, hopefully contains relevant items)
    [root@laptop ~]# lsmod
    Module Size Used by
    rt73usb 24320 0
    rt2x00usb 9216 1 rt73usb
    rt2x00lib 17920 2 rt73usb,rt2x00usb
    rfkill 5904 1 rt2x00lib
    input_polldev 3720 1 rt2x00lib
    crc_itu_t 2304 1 rt2x00lib
    mac80211 117132 2 rt2x00usb,rt2x00lib
    Interestingly I am unable to remove the module rt73 with 'modprobe -r' or 'rmmod'.
    /etc/modprobe.conf has 'alias wlan0 rt73usb' as it's only entry. The device is listed with lsusb. I can find no clues in dmsg or /var/log/messages.log when grepping for wlan0. The same failure occurs with 'netcfg2 wlan0' and also when using wpa_supplicant to try to connect.
    Any help with solving this problem would be appreciated.

    The device works ok on the laptop with winxp and with a backtrack live cd. I am reluctant to mess with the firmware - unfamiliar territory.
    I will try to install an older kernel and see how the rt73 driver goes, it won't work with kernel-2.6.24

  • [solved] network interface names changed?

    Hi,
    I reinstalled arch on my laptop yesterday (hard drive failure). Normally, not to big a deal. Took me four hours to get arch installed. Why? couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the wireless connected (ethernet connection unavailable, port is physically damaged). In the end, my fault, I should have tried iwconfig earlier.
    It seems that my network interfaces have all changed names since the last time i installed. The wireless interface has changed from the sensible 'wlan0' to the mystical 'wlp4s0'.
    also, eth0 is now enp9s0.
    This has messed up a number of my scripts and above all is more than a little confusing, wlan0 feels right, wlp4s0 feels wrong.
    Now, I'm not opposed to change. I like change, even if it breaks a lot of my scripts, but I like to know why something has changed to something less intuitive.
    Why was this change put in place? I can't find any real info on it after 30 mins googling.
    Can it be changed back through some setting somewhere without upsetting whatever problem it's supposed to fix?

    Yes I did, but it didn't help.
    I solved the problem now, but it was rather complicated and is only a workaround. If anyone is having the same problem:
    1) I installed the open source drivers and enabled KMS
    2) I copied the efi shell from the arch boot disk to the rEFInd folder
    3) Now everytime I start my laptop I have to start the EFI-Shell (v1) first. This somehow changes the resolution. I exit the shell and start arch. X works.
    I have no idea why this works, but it is the only thing that does. If anyone knows what this means, I'd appreciate your help.
    By the way: Step 3 also solves this issue

  • [SOLVED] Network interface name keeps changing

    My network interface name keeps changing between wlp2s0 and wlan0. This is a real pain, since I never know what name will be generated at boot. Most of the time it's called wlp2s0, so this is what netctl is set up to handle by itself. At boots were wlan0 is generated I have to connect manually.
    I've tried making the name static by adding a rule to the /etc/udev/rules.d/10-network.rules. The rule i added was:
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", ATTR{address}=="48:5d:60:7e:64:e9", NAME="wlp2s0"
    Wlp2s0 is generated at boot alright, but I still have to connect manually with this solution. As if the "new" wlp2s0 is not recognized as the old one (same MAC). What gives?
    This is on an Asus Eee 1001PXD, with the Qualcomm Atheros AR9285.

    I've now been able to replicate the issue, and run the command:
    journalctl -b
    I did find the output:
    mai 18 02:30:02 <hostname> systemd-udevd[126]: error changing net interface name wlan0 to wlp2s0: Device or resource busy
    I haven't been able to process the whole output yet (I'll continue tomorrow if necessary), but I've found some things that I hope will clearify things. I get similar outputs to the following a lot throughout:
    mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: carrier lost
    mai 18 02:30:03 <hostname> dhcpcd[237]: wlan0: waiting for carrier
    mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: [email protected]: control process exited, code=exited status=1
    mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Failed to start Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles.
    mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Unit [email protected] entered failed state.
    mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Starting Network.
    mai 18 02:30:04 <hostname> systemd[1]: Reached target Network.
    EDIT:
    I see now that this is later in time, so that's not so strange after all. I'll look some more.
    EDIT2:
    The error code that a name change i impossible is the first time the term 'wlan0' occurs in the log. However there's a line much earlier that talks about wlp2s0:
    mai 18 02:29:59 <hostname> systemd[1]: Expecting device sys-subsystem-net-devices-wlp2s0.device...
    But as I said, if this information doesn't help, I'll have a closer look at the output tomorrow. Getting late here in Norway now.
