[solved]WoL fails 'most of the time', sometimes
Sorry for the cryptic topic name, but I didn't want to make it too long
I've been setting up wake-on-lan on my desktop computer, with my server waking it up. I followed the wiki entry and everything worked. I didn't even need ethtool. When I SSH into my server and run
sleep 1s ; wol -v -p 97 -i 192.168.1.3 00:07:E9:73:09:44
and then suspend my computer (s3) it wakes up a minute later. I've also tried adding it to the crontab of the server and it works. But when there is a big gap between the suspending and the wake-up it fails. The gap seems to be roughly an hour or so. Yesterday evening I changed the crontab on the server to this, and shut off my computer.

The computer woke up about 6:45.
Google turned up a hit about a fedora user where it failed after an hour, but that was because the router went into sleep mode, but my server torrents all night.
I tried with S1 suspend, but my comp didn't want to suspend with that.
One evening when it didn't woke up I went to my server and started issuing manual wol's, at roughly the 10th try I succeeded, no clue why.
I haven't really figured out if the -w switch makes any difference, I didn't really understand the man page's description of it.

It worked this evening after a 4h sleep with

in my crontab. No idea what caused the problem, but it'll hopefully work now. I'll see if it works tomorrow.

[SOLVED] Netbeans - Run fails - most of the time
Hello everybody,
I have just today installed Netbeans Verion 7.0 and all plugins are up to date.
I have a strage error with a simple "Hello World" program:
The program builds always fine, but it runs just in about 1 of 5 tries.

disabling the built-in profiler: in project properties ->
Profile, uncheck "Show profiling indicators during run".

IMac Power Issues -Won't Turn on Most of the Time, Sometimes it Does
I'm having an issue that as far as I can tell doesn't really fit into any of the usual categories of problems.
Starting immediately after I installed Snow Leopard, when I turn my computer on (after having been shut down and left for a while), it makes some sounds as though the hard-drive is starting, and if a disk is in the disk-drive revs, but there is no chime and the screen doesn't turn on and nothing happens. I've since discovered that if I unplug everything from the computer including the power cord and remove the power cord from the wall as well (dunno if that part is essential), wait a long time, and then only attach the power cord, it boots up fine. Then I can use the computer as normal with no issues whatsoever. I can restart it as much as I want and it'll boot up every time until I shut it down (then the problem starts again.)
I called Apple Support and they had no idea what was up, so they sent me to a store to speak to a genius. He wasn't sure but he figured it was either the logic board or the internal power unit (or something like that). They wanted $800 to fix it, so I said I'd think about it and decided to work on it more myself.
Once I got the computer on I ran Onyx, Disk Utility (both off the Snow Leopard disk and off my computer without it), the hardware diagnostic test extended test, and I reset the PRAM and Power Manager. Onyx and Disk Utility found issues but fixed them, and I ran them again after I fixed those and they didn't find anything.
I'm pretty sure I've covered every test I can do. The only possible conclusion I can think of is that the power supply is slowly failing when it comes to booting up, but it seems strange and way to coincidental that it happened the same time I installed Snow Leopard. It also doesn't seem to make sense that the computer is fine once I do get it on and that I can somewhat reliably get it to boot by leaving it unplugged long enough.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.Hello BB:

I reset the PRAM and Power Manager
Is this the SMC/PMU?
If that is the case, I think I would assume a hardware problem.

I'm having issues loggin in to skype in the morning at work. I'm using my MS account, with two-factor authentication enabled. When trying to login I'm typing my user/pass, then I'm being asked for my authentication code; after that, skype takes a really really long time to authenticate (30-40 seconds), it fails and I'm taken back to the account selection screen (where I need to specify whether I'm planning on using a MS/Skype account).
If I retry this for 6-7 times, it will eventually succeed in loggin in.
This has been happening for a while now.
Any suggestions ?What wireless router are you using?
What firmware revision is it running? Is it 2.4ghz or 5ghz?
Wireless has become more and more used and hence the chance for interference has grown by leaps and bounds. Even in your own household there can be AV senders, cordless phones, baby monitors, front door bells and cameras.. all running wireless on 2.4ghz. To say nothing of the neighbours.
So it can be software driver issues.. a hardware failure issue.. or just plain old noise issue.
When the wireless does connect, hold down the option key and click the airport symbol in the top menu area.
It will show you some info on the connection.. including noise and link speed.
Or open terminal and type airport -I

I suggest you manually try at least the main non-overlapping channels in the wireless router.. so set to channel 1, 6 and 11 to test in turn if any work better. -
On the occasions when the windows fail to restore, I usually see a blank start page with something to the effect of "about:restore" or "about:restore session" in the URL line. I've tried pressing enter, but it didn't help. Other times, I've immediately tried going to the History menu, but the "Restore Previous Session" menu pick is faded out. I followed the help posted here to activate the restore windows feature, but the windows still fail to restore most of the time. I'm not a techie, so I'd really appreciate some easy to understand help.
The DMP file is inconclusive. You could run driver verifier to find the underlying issue but WPR is often easier.
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit)

When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.
If you problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry) Please configure your as per the below snip
Click Start
It will reboot 3 t imes and record the data to a file and tell you its name and location.
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.
These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't
know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
Since it is more likely to be a driver please run verifier first.

If verifier does not find the issue we can move on to this.

When I try to Home-Share It works most of the time. It will always show up, but sometimes I tap on the icon of my library then it wont load, I restart my computer, IOS Divice and my router It still wont load my library. I even went and tried to reinstall Itunes and everything nothing works.

When I try to do the updates my computer says it has ready it goes through like it is downloading them then at the end it says some of the files could not be saved to "/" files.

Pop3 account sometimes shows mails / folders, most of the time does not
Hi,
I have 2 mail accounts set up on my iphone: A mobileme one, which works reasonably well, and a POP account.
Sometimes when I go into the POP account I see and Inbox and a Sent folder, and the inbox is full of my mails.
But most of the time when I click on the POP account I just get a blank screen and "Connecting..."
Is there anything I can do to fix this? At least I'd like to see the mails I've already received.

TomThe Mac Firewall in Leopard has three settings
Allow All which is effectively Off
Allow Essentials which allows certain prescribed services only.
And Allow Specific Applications and Services. You need to add whichever things you want to work with the internet by application or service even if it uses a port you know is used by something else.
For instance - If you had iChat and AdiumX both of which log on to the AIM servers on port 5190 by default you have to allow both apps in the Specific Section list (the same if you change their Login ports both to 443
Now there seems to have been a problem at the OS 10.5 to 10.5.1 change over.
It seems that the OS is holding on to the 10.5 setting (which in fact may not be working at all)
Therefore use the - sign at the bottom of the list to remove any item that was there before the 10.5.1 update and then set the firewall to Allow All and then set it back again and use the + sign to re-add applications.
The Firewall will work on whichever connection the Mac has to the next device in line, towards the internet.

Most of the time when I export photos by email, it fails
Most of the time, but not all, when exporting photos by email, it takes a long time then fails, how do I fix?
You can stop that behavior by changing two settings within the browser. Go to Tools -> Options and click on the CONTENT button. Make sure that "Block pop-up windows" is checked. Then click on the ADVANCED button on the far right and add a check to "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload".
That should stop most of them. If not all, then you could install AdBlock Plus add-on, since most of the redirects are ad generated. (Tools -> Add-ons -> Get Add-ons) -
Camera sometimes works but dead most of the time
Most of the time, the camera won't open "shutter" and display the message : "There is not enough room to take additional pictures. Please delete some existing photos." Erase all photos and music off my phone, no result. Camera sometimes works after numerous reboots, so problem has to be software. I had this problem on 1.0.2 and 1.1.1. Sometimes also shutters opens and shows black screen.
I'm desperate...Since the problem occurs even after a restore and I haven't heard of this particular error before, I'd say this is a hardware rather than software issue.
Unless, of course, you have any "hacks" installed that may cause this...
Edit: I just noticed that your post says nothing about a restore... so if you haven't done so, this would be the first thing to try. -
i am using firefox 3.6.17 i upgraded it to 4.1.but it does not work properly sometimes it opens every website and most of the time it does not work . so what is the problem please help . thank you
Did you check your security software (firewall)?
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

Hi I am having trouble expiring iMovie projects to YouTube in 720p it works some times but it fails to upload most of the time
A work around is to export from your camera roll.
So export the video to the camera roll.
Go to Photos app,
and choose export (the arrow pointing out), and choose to go to you tube form there.
It tends to be a little more reliable.

Just recently, I have encountered a problem with my iPhone. When someone calls, I can clearly hear the caller, but the caller cannot hear me speak. Sometimes the problem is nt there and works properly, but most of the times, I am facing this problem. I have tried plugging in the earphone and speak, but its the same.... can anyone advse what may be the problem?

Most of the time when I turn on the Mac I get the white screen and question mark appear. Sometimes it will turn on and work. But often the coloured spinning wheel starts up especially after trying to use iphoto it freezes and a couple of times the screen has then gone black. The computer seemed pretty warm yesterday when this happened.
Any suggestions of what I should do to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, you can't have a PowerMac, they can't run 10.6, 10.7, or ML/10.8!

I have a problem opening a new tab with FireFox 24.0.
When I press the tab bar, sometimes it opens, but most of the times it won't. It is especially so when there are already 5 tabs opened.
I use "checkCompatibility 1.3" and "Google Toolbar for FireFox 7.1.20110512W" as addons. There have been no problems until the previous version of FireFox.Thank you for the reply.
It works fine with the safe mode. So it must be something to do with <i>checkCompatibility 1.3</i> or <i>Google Toolbar for FireFox 7.1.20110512W</i>.
Both are necessary to run Google Toolbar on Firefox, and the fact is Google Toolbar is too convenient to be removed. So I have bookmarked a couple of blank pages and I right-click them to open new tabs. But it is so tiresome.
I hope this problem will be fixed in the next version. FireFox without Google Toolbar is just a useless browser.
