[SOLVED] Wrong scancodes for Ctrl, Super and Alt on keyboard

I have bought this keyboard and I'm having an issue with it that I can't figure out. Under Archlinux, the Control, Super and Alt key are interpreted as the Shift key. I have tested it on a tablet running Android and its behavior is identical however when testing it under a laptop running Windows 8 it behaved correctly.
I've checked the scancodes and keycodes using showkey and all of the 3 problem keys match the Shift key's scancode / keycode.
When pluging in the keyboard, this is what dmesg outputs:

Any help in figuring out the issue is highly appreciated.

Turns out I wasn't searching for my problem using the right keywords. After some variation in the search terms I have found this driver: https://bitbucket.org/Swoogan/aziokbd. I gave it a try and it seems to fix the problem.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
  • How do I turn on my wireless keyboard and make it 'discoverable'?  I got a message that the batteries were low, so I changed them for new ones and now the keyboard doesn't work.
    I got a message saying that the batteries were low, so changed them for new ones and now the keyboard cannot be 'found'. There seems to be no way to turn it on and make it 'discoverable' to the system.  At the moment I'm typing this on a spare keyboard plugged into the  back of my mac via a USB.  Please help!
    Have you checked to make sure the batteries are inserted the correct way? Have you tried to turn it on by pushing the right upper (round) edge of the keyboard - if you do that, do you see a tiny little green light? Since you have a wired keyboard, can you get to the Bluetooth setup/preference pane so you can manually try to sync the keyboard?
    PS - posting duplicate posts is not helpful - it makes things too confusing, so I've asked the hosts to remove your other (identical) post.
  • [SOLVED] Wiki page for GPT disks and booting arch using UEFI
    Hi guys, I am new to archlinux. I installed archlinux x86_64 just yesterday and I like its customisability. I also like arch wiki. Nowhere else have I seen such extensive documentation, especially about things like HAL, UDEV etc. with proper instructions. Thanks to all archers.
    I have installed Archlinux x86_64 in my Dell India Studio 1537 laptop along with Windows 7 Professional x64. Both the OSes boot in UEFI-GPT setup (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 firmware booting from USB). I boot Archlinux using my own compiled grub2-bzr compiled for both BIOS and UEFI-x64. I have a 1 MB BIOS Boot Partition as required by grub2 for BIOS-GPT booting. My Archlinux system can boot both from bios and from uefi, while Windows can boot only using UEFI.
    The official Archlinux installation guide talks about only MBR (or msdos disklabel) partitions and booting from BIOS based systems. With 2TB drives becoming common place and UEFI being implemented (search for Phoenix SecureCore Tiano's 1 second POST operation), I think a proper wiki page describing differences between MBR and GPT, why GPT is better, how to setup arch to boot from GPT. Another page describing steps to setup arch to boot from UEFI (either as a separate page or as an extension of GRUB2 wiki page) is also needed.
    Some details regarding Pure GPT (not a Hybrid GPT/MBR setup) and/or UEFI setups :-
    Partitioning tools -
    GNU Parted for filesystem related tasks
    GPT fdisk tool - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ , http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ ,  pacman -S gdisk (in extra repo) - for non-filesystem related tasks
    util-linux-ng fdisk does not support GPT disks
    Bootloader - GRUB2 - vanilla grub-legacy does not support GPT and does not support UEFI (Fedora's patched grub-legacy does support both GPT and UEFI) and syslinux does not support GPT (I may be wrong here - seems a gptmbr of syslinux does help in booting from gpt but not sure).
    For GRUB2 - Need BIOS Boot Partition to embed GRUB2's core.img in GPT disks - size about 1 MB max - no filesystem
    In GPT fdisk partition type code - EF02
    In GNU Parted or GParted - bios_grub flag on
    For UEFI-GPT booting this special partition is not needed as no embedding takes place. This is needed only in case of BIOS-GPT booting.
    Incase of custom kernel configuration - enable CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION for GPT support
                                                                        CONFIG_EFI for UEFI support (for UEFI even above option required)
                                                                        CONFIG_EFI_VARS for UEFI Runtime Variables support (optional)
    Note: Although GPT is part of UEFI specification, a UEFI system is not needed to boot from/use GPT. BIOS based GPT booting is possible with GRUB2 or Fedora's patched grub-legacy (but not vanilla grub-legacy provided by archlinux). It is also possible to boot Linux in UEFI-MBR setup (again using grub2) but I have not tried it.
    Even without UEFI and less than 2TB harddrives, GPT based partitioning has many advantages - secondary GPT header and Partition table, CRC32 checksums. Unique Disk GUID and Filesystem-independent Unique Partition GUIDs, multiple primary partitions (default is 128 partitions, but it can be changed). The only problamatic OS is Windows which does not allow GPT booing unless one has UEFI based system. It allows only UEFI-GPT or BIOS-MBR setups. In linux it just depends on how the bootloader is configured - not a problem with grub2.
    I also propose that incase of Auto-prepare Hard Drive, the installer default to GPT for "archlinux only" installs ( ie no dual-boot or triple-boot etc.).
    I did not use the official archlinux iso but used archboot 2010.04 R3 as it gave an option of installing to GPT and also provided GRUB2 during bootloader install. I have never edited any wiki page before, thats why I request some one else to start a wiki page with the information given above.
    I don't know whether this is the right place, but any Windows (Vista or 7 x64 versions) and Linux dual-boot user who has UEFI-based system with GPT partitioning and wants to get rid of Hybrid MBR setup (to boot Windows) can follow this post http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofive … hp/t186440 (outside this forum) - this link describes the way to make Windows boot natively in UEFI-GPT setup. After doing this one can install arch using GRUB2 compiled for UEFI x86_64, and Windows will also see
    Welcome to arch, skodabenz! Offering documentation on third post - all thumbs up
    You could start the wiki page in your user-space with what you have, and then invite others to join working on it. Just register a wiki account, navigate to the page you want to start, for example:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:skodabenz/GPT
    and click on "edit this page".
    As noted in the other thread, arch's legacy grub is patched for gpt support. I don't know about UEFI, but you can always open a bug report asking for the patches from fedora to be included.
    edit: the page from Rod Smith is a great resource. I was absolutely terrified at first by all this screwed up GPT/MBR stuff when I tried triple-booting Arch, Win and OS x, but he really does a great job explaining what it is all about.
  • Best case for ipad mini and Logitech wireless keyboard that opens like a book?
    What is a good case that holds both of these that opens like a book? In other words it is not a sleeve, it poems with ipad mini on one side and my Bluetooth keyboard on the other????
    There's likely no "best case" for any device. What works great for some will be detested by others. I can only tell you what I personally use and how it works. My own personal iPads (my wife and my 8 year old son have their own iPads with differing case needs) are pretty much relegated to indoor use. My mini 2 uses the standard-issue Apple Smart Cover. The back is protected (mainly from scratching & dings) by a clear plastic (polycarbonate) shell (purchased at Best Buy, Rocketfish brand) that is Smart Cover compatible (has the proper cutout for the Smart Cover hinge to contact the device properly). This combination works very well for me personally because there are many times when I do not want the Smart Cover on the device, flopping around & in my way...it's easily pulled off of the device when I need it off while the back shell stays on. You can't do that with the Smart Case. This works well enough for me on the mini 2 so I'm adopting the same for my Air 2.
  • [SOLVED] using squid for local cache and configuring firefox
    Hi, I have just installed squid following the instructions at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Squid and can run squidclient to retrieve webpages. The headers include
    X-Cache: HIT from localhost.localdomain
    X-Cache-Lookup: HIT from localhost.localdomain:3128
    which I take to mean the cache is working? Next I want firefox to use the proxy, but changing the settings in Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Network/Settings to localhost or 127.0.0.1 and 3128 doesn't work. Firefox can't see the proxy for some reason. I have set
    http_access allow all
    in the conf for now. How do I get firefox to use squid?
    TIA
  • Avoiding ctrl/super/alt/shift in wmii (or other?)
    Hi,
    I hate it when I need to use the ctrl/super/alt/shift or similar keys.  I like to keep my fingers on the home row, the row above and below those are fine too, but when I need to go below that (eg common key combo's like ctrl+<something>) I find I need to cramp my fingers/hands into very awkward positions.  Is there anyone who finds typing ctrl+<something> or similar comfortable?
    I would like to avoid using any of these keys at all costs. In vim they are not common which is great, but in wmii they are very common because ctrl+h/j/k/l and shift+ctrl+h/j/k/l are very common shortcuts there.  Sure you can change ctrl to super/alt but I find all options very awkward, even painful.
    I tried setting MODKEY to a (because it's on my homerow) and to Space (very accessible with thumb) in my wmiirc.
    This seems to work for some keys like mod+a, mod+p, mod+h, but other keys will break (eg you can't even type in a terminal like this).
    Any help/ideas appreciated.
    Some people use CapsLock as Ctrl. You'll still have to reach out for it, but it's at least a little closer. This doesn't help much for the other modifiers, though.
    For window management, you might consider using keychaining and use e.g. Space as the global keychain prefix key, and have a "Space-Space" pass through the space key to the focused application. (This is the way screen handles it,Ctrl-a is the prefix key, Ctrl-a-a passes through C-a). Back in the days of wmi keychains were implemented in this way, i don't know about wmii, though. You'll very soon get used to typing a double space (or double "a") if you really mean a "space" or "a", but whenever you sit down at a different machine you'll find yourself typing double spaces or "aa". This isn't ideal, I for one use Ctrl-t as my prefix key, but then i don't mind using ctrl...
    Maybe you could build yourself some kind of footswitch board that sends modifier keys, so you can keep typing and press Ctrl/alt/super etc with your feet. (Whether that might lead to ergonomic problems is a different question). That's  the only way I see to completely avoid pressing modifiers with your fingers, because you'll always have apps that insist on using these modifiers.
  • Best Practice for SUP and WSUS Installation on Same Server
    Hi Folks,
    I have a question, I am in process of deploying SCCM 2012 R2... I was in process of deploying Software Update Point on SCCM with one of the existing WSUS server installed on a separate server from SCCM.
    A debate has started with of the colleague who says that the using remote WSUS server is recommended by Microsoft because of the scalability security  that WSUS will be downloading the updates from Microsoft and SCCM should be working as downstream
    server to fetch updates from WSUS server.
    but according to my consideration it is recommended to install WSUS server on the same server where SCCM is installed... actually it is recommended to install WSUS on a site system and you can used the same SCCM server to deploy WSUS.
    please advice me the best practices for deploying SCCM and WSUS ... what Microsoft says about WSUS to be installed on same SCCM server OR WSUS should be on a separate server then the SCCM server ???
    awaiting your advices ASAP :)
    Regards, Owais
    Hi Don,
    thanks for the information, another quick one...
    the above mentioned configuration I did is correct in terms of planning and best practices?
    I agree with Jorgen, it's ok to have WSUS/SUP on the same server as your site server, or you can have WSUS/SUP on a dedicated server if you wish.
    The "best practice" is whatever suits your environment, and is a supported-by-MS way of doing it.
    One thing to note, is that if WSUS ever becomes "corrupt" it can be difficult to repair and sometimes it's simplest to rebuild the WSUS Windows OS. If this is on your site server, that's a big deal.
    Sometimes, WSUS goes wrong (not because of ConfigMgr)..
    Note that if you have a very large estate, or multiple primary site servers, you might have a CAS, and you would need a SUP on the CAS. (this is not a recommendation for a CAS, just to be aware)
