[SOLVED] X-Autostart, Auto-log-in and DBus : a non-pulseaudio issue

Hello,
besides the not-so-clear title, I've been investigating for what first looked like a pulseaudio problem for a while, and I'm now sharing what I found with you :
Pre-existing conditions
An Arch system with systemd, auto-loggin on a TTY and auto-start of X
Symptoms
Pulseaudio wouldn't start anymore at boot, but everything worked fine if it was started a while after, provided one would have sudo killall -9 pulseaudio before, and there was no major upgrade that could be related to this change.
Journalctl showed dbus related messages, saying that pulse wasn't able to find it, and a general failure in main.c start.
Solution
Actually, a part of the boot process was the following :
            |-----> lots of things, and at a point dbus
Init --> |
            |-----> auto-logging service (getty stuff) -----> .xinitrc ------> pulseaudio
and there was no guarantee that dbus was already started when pulse audio was.
To add this guarantee, edit your autologging service and add the following
[Unit]
... your stuff ...
#lines to add :
Requires=dbus.Service #I'm not sure this one is needed, if anyone here can confirm it
After=dbus.Service
..rest of the file..
reboot, and enjoy

I know this is an older post, but I'm hoping by bumping it someone will be able to help me with this issue even though the thread is marked as [SOLVED], so that I won't have to create a new post.
I'm trying to set up a host to autologin a user, then automatically startx to enter a desktop environment.  I am using these guides:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/au … al_console
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Login
I haven't yet set up the startx at login, but I've done that before, so I don't expect any issues or problems.
I successfully set up autologin using the first link and everything seemed fine.  However, on the startx at login wiki, it states:
Tips
This method can be combined with automatic login to virtual console. When doing this you have to set correct dependencies for the autologin systemd service to ensure that dbus is started before ~/.xinitrc is read and hence pulseaudio started (see: BBS#155416)
I don't have pulseaudio issues to worry about, but I do have an exec line to start lxde.  So, I followed that link to this thread and created the lines NougatRillettes suggested.  Here's the complete file:
/etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/autologin.conf
[Unit]
Requires=dbus.Service
After=dbus.Service
[Service]
ExecStart=
ExecStart=-/usr/bin/agetty --autologin <username> --noclear %I 38400 linux
Then, when I reboot the kernel spits this out:
Nov 06 14:39:23 [Host] systemd[1]: Set hostname to <[Host]>.
Nov 06 14:39:23 [Host] systemd[1]: [/etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/autologin.conf:2] Failed to add dependency on dbus.Service, ignoring: Invalid argument
Nov 06 14:39:23 [Host] systemd[1]: [/etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/autologin.conf:3] Failed to add dependency on dbus.Service, ignoring: Invalid argument
Nov 06 14:39:23 [Host] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service, ignoring: Unit display-manager.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
I rechecked the wikis and noticed:
Tips & Tricks
Avoiding unnecessary dmesg errors
To avoid errors related to display-manager.service in dmesg, you should set the default target to multi-user instead of graphical:
# systemctl enable multi-user.target
So I went ahead and enabled multi-user.target and rebooted, thinking that would solve the problem, but it didn't...the error messages were the same.
I'm hoping someone can help...and maybe update those two wikis if there's any information missing.  I'm also wondering if I should reverse the last step I described by disabling multi-user.target.

    Windows 7 Pro base image pulled down by Zenworks. Addon image with Zenworks Agent 11.3, Novell Client 2 SP3 IR8 are also pulled down. Sysprep does its thing before handing control over to a couple powershell scripts i wrote that configure a few things (disable uac, install certs, synchronize time to our server, disable libraries, etc) before installing the Novell Client followed by the Zenworks Agent and then configuring the Registry for Auto Logon for both Local Admin and Novell. 1 of 4 things happens.
    The computer boots to windows and tries logging in, gets a no tree or server error, then reboots and auto logs in fine and finishes imaging.
    The computer boots to windows and tries logging in, gets a no tree or server error, then reboots and auto log fails with no tree or server and it just sits there. Does not finish imaging.
    The computer boots to windows, tries logging in and gets a no tree or server error, and just sits there. Does not reboot. Does not finish imaging.
    The computer boots to windows, auto logs in fine, finishes imaging.
    Increased "Max Retries Boot Threshold" to 900 and it did not make any difference.
    Increased "NCP Establish Connection Timeout" to 45 and it did not make any difference.
    Increased "Server Connection Retries" to 20 and it did not make any difference.
    The strangest part is that from then on Auto Log works fine. I never get a Tree Server error after that first attempt regardless of with of the 4 scenarios happens. If i just log in by hand, or reboot the ones that stick at No Tree or Server they will autolog in from then on no problem.
    We did a port mirror on the switch to see what all was coming from the workstation at that point and there was no Novell Client traffic just prior the No Tree Server error according to my network guys. They could see other traffic (dhcp requests, etc) but not so much as a request came from the workstation for logon. They compared to a working login and saw none of the Novell traffic they expected.
    Its a very random problem, I would say on a lab 0f 30 machines 20 auto log fine and finish imaging and 10 end up stuck at the No Tree Server error. If i reimage the same 30 machines, a different 10 will end up stuck at no tree server. These are all dell Lat d630's but we're seeing the problem on Opti 745's/755's/790's and Lat e6500/6400's.
    Any idea where i should even begin looking? Im thinking of adding WinDump to the base so I can start a data capture from the machine while its trying to login, but since we did see DHCP requests on the mirrored port but no Novell traffic, im thinking it wont show me anything different than the mirror port log.

    I tried using a really Novell Client SP3 IR1 and had no luck, still getting a ton of Tree Server issues on devices that are set to auto log.

    Hi,
    Livecache DB and log back up looks like can not be accessed from SAP. Database Manager GUI is used.

  • Guest account and auto log out

    I will be using Snow Leopard machines in a computer lab with guest accounts. However, I've read that when the idle timer ticks over, the dialog box confirming the Guest account's files will be deleted comes up and does not time out (like a normal account would).
    So the machines never auto log out. In an environment where most users don't log off to protect their privacy, this is an annoying problem.
    Is this still an issue? Is there a way to turn off that dialog box confirming logout? Or some other way to get my Guests to auto log off?
    Thanks.

    it would actually be pretty easy to create a automator script that runs a bash script like "sudo exit" which would then prompt for the password of a admin.
    i also did a quick google search and found these:

    and

    the second one will probably be more helpful but hopefully this little nudge will help out.

    "Remember me" options are stored in cookies. First try removing the cookies for the site and then log in and see if it remembers you the next time you visit the site. Details of how to do that are shown in the [[deleting cookies]] article.
    If that does not work, the file that stores cookies may be corrupt and you can try deleting the file to see if that resolves the problem.

    # Close Firefox

  • Kde authorization (polkit and dbus driving me insane)

    hi,
    apologies if this is complete newbie territory, but it's been a long time since i last used linux as a desktop OS so polkit and dbus are all new to me.
    the problem, basically, is that KDE won't let me do anything i would consider privileged. network manager applet won't let me change wifi connections, package manager doesn't work and usb disks won't mount.
    let's start with usb disks. i added a polkit rule as per the wiki:
    [root@mjollnir rules.d]# cat 10-enable-mount.rules
    polkit.addRule(function(action, subject) {
    if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-system" && subject.isInGroup("storage")) {
    return polkit.Result.YES;
    and i am in the storage group:
    $ groups
    wheel network audio storage power
    but i get the following error when i try to open a newly inserted usb disk in dolphin:
    Error checking authorization: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: Action org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount is not registered (polkit-error-quark, 0)
    and now for network manager -
    running nm-applet from a terminal and trying to change wifi connection gives me this:
    ** (nm-applet:1369): WARNING **: Could not create object for /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Settings/0: No session found for uid 1000 (unknown)
    ** (nm-applet:1369): WARNING **: Could not create object for /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Settings/3: No session found for uid 1000 (unknown)

    (nm-applet:1369): nm-applet-WARNING **: Failed to register as an agent: (32) Session not found
    (nm-applet:1369): nm-applet-WARNING **: Failed to add/activate connection: (32) No session found for uid 1000 (unknown)
    finally, launching apper from the terminal:
    QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
    QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
    i do have dbus processes running under my userid, so i think i have a session but i'm not really sure what i'm looking for, and learning the complete ins and outs of dbus is more than a little daunting for what should be a relatively simple task!
    can anyone point me in the right direction to start figuring this out? i'm currently seriously considering a complete reinstall but i'm not sure i have the time for that, especially since i don't know if it would necessarily solve the problem
    fwiw, i booted a mint livecd and all this stuff worked fine so it's not my hardware

    Sorry for being vague - i understand it's not easy dealing with newbies i'll try to be clearer!
    I was running kdm as root, then logging in as a regular user. I've now enabled the kdm systemctl service as per mariusmeyer's instructions, but it didn't change what happens when i insert a USB disk - same error as before.

  • Logging in and out of your email

    Is there a way to logging in and out of your email? I'm not to thrilled with my email being open all the time.

    Not easily.
    Remember, RIM and the BlackBerry were made famous for their "always on push" email technology.
    You will need to either turn off the data signal on your device (see Manage Connections > Mobile Network) or disable the account in your BIS login, where you setup the email account.
    Or, ignore the incoming email.

  • Wifi: No longer auto log-in to home wireless network

    My late 2011 MBP (10.7.3) is no longer auto logging in to my home network.
    I finally got round to upgrading my old (like 8 years) modem/router for a current model D-Link Wireless N ADSL2+ DSL-2740R. link (I think this just replaced the previous model of the same name.) I gave the network the same name as my 8-year-old one and the same login password.
    Everything works fine and wifi is WAY faster. Wired connections are great.
    But I can no longer persuade my MBP to auto log-in to my home network. Every time I wake my MBP from sleep I now have manually to pull down on the wifi menu (network) list and locate my home network again. I tried re-ordering the list to put my home network at the top of the preferred list of networks but the problem persists. It was working just fine before the change and always auto-logged-in to my home network upon awaking from sleep or booting.

    It looks like manually deleting my whole preferred network list and then re-adding my home network may have done the trick.

    I have the photographer plan With Photoshop and Lightroom. Now suddenly The creative cloud app says that Lightroom isn´t installed. It is and how do i fix this. I don´t want to loose any pictures. Tried logging in and out. Also restarted my Imac with no luck.

    This has nothing to do with your pictures. As long as LR works, nothing happens. The CC app merely has lost an entry in the installer database. Would a reinstall fix it? Sure. Is it necessary? Not really (until the next version or update). So unless you have too much time to spend or something isn't working, I'm sure you can find more interesting things to do with your tiem. Otherwise use the cleaner tool and get to it:

    After updating to 10.10.3, now my Macbook Pro 15" (mid-2014) will not stay logged in. I log in after restarting, and it will stay logged in for 3-5 seconds then immediately log off and go back to the login screen. Any help?
    By the way, I also updated my Macbook Pro 17" (mid-2009) and it seems to be running fine, though I haven't tried to restart it and log in. I'm afraid I won't be able to get this one to work either if I do.

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
