[SOLVED] XFCE - Lack of audio control via laptop's volume wheel.

This doesn't really bother me much, but I've been curious for a while, so I may as well just ask.
In a gnome-session I am able to control my master volume with a little scrolling wheel built into the front of my laptop. This same wheel has no effect in xfce/openbox/awesome or anything else I've tried. I had a look at gnome's startup applications and found the commands 'gnome-sound-applet' and 'start-pulseaudio-x11' in there. I can start both in xfce/openbox/awesome, the former allows me to control the volume with an icon in the corner, but there's still no use for the scroll wheel.
Again, I'm only asking because I'm curious, but does anyone know of a program I can install or possibly a setting I could edit to give XFCE this same (admittedly frivolous) feature?

  • [SOLVED] Volume Wheel on Laptop Not Working

    Hello everyone, installed arch for the first time a couple days ago and have pretty much everything setup to the way I like. However, I can't seem to find how to get my laptop's volume wheel to work. Sliding the wheel simply doesn't do anything.
    I've looked around on the wikis and haven't been able to find anything.

  • Can Wireless Home Audio products be controlled via IP with any other devices?

    I'm interested in knowing if the Wireless Home Audio Director, Conductor or Player can be controlled via IP with alternative controllers?  Specifically, I'm interested in integrating the products into a universal remote control or home control system and still have 2 way communications with feedback.  IP and RS232 are the most commons ways of accomplishing this.

    Hi,
    Maybe for basic functions like (play, stop, next) using the IR remote, a third party IR based universal remote may work but that's a big gamble to take, anyway what would be the purpose then of the Linksys DMRW1000 (IP based remote control) remote that Linksys is selling if its compatible with third party remotes.

  • H8-1287 Beats Audio controls do not work in Windows 8.1

    I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 and installed the IDT High-Definition audio driver from HP's website.  The surround sounds seems to be working but the controls do not work to modify the EQ etc.  I've seen the problem has been resolved for Envy laptops but all the links for the software appear to only be for the notebooks and not compatible with my desktop system.  I've downloaded the available software (IDT High-Definition Audio driver) found under my HPE HI-1287 product from HP's support site but the Beats audio control panel doesn't seem to make any sound quality changes.  Hopefully there is a driver somewhere compatible with my desktop system that allows controling the audio properly.  Thanks.

    Hello @KICR,
    I understand that the Beats Audio Console is not adjusting the audio settings on your HP Pavilion HPE h8-1287c Desktop PC running Windows 8.1. According to the HP Pavilion HPE h8-1287c Desktop PC Drivers page there are no Windows 8.1 drivers for your computer. I can only assume that this means your computer is currently using Windows default drivers or Windows 8 drivers and the Beats Audio Console is not able to interact properly with the currently installed driver.
    All I can recommend is that you check back periodically to the drivers page I linked above and see if Windows 8.1 drivers have been created. Other than that your only option at this time would be to use the HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8) to restore your computer back to Windows 8 where the Beats Audio Console has drivers that are compatible.
    I hope this helps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • [Solved] Difficulty getting digital audio to play in all applications

    This is probably a noobish question...
    My motherboard supports digital audio out via S/PDIF cable (optical), as well as standard analog audio. I have a stereo receiver that I've plugged my optical cable into.
    When I go to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon > Audio Playback, I put the "HDA Intel S/PDIF Digital" device on top and clicked Test. I could hear the test tone (playback source is PCM).
    However, if I go to play an MP3 or whatever, I have to go into the settings for each application and tell it to use that particular device. Some applications (such as Firefox) do not have obvious settings for audio playback. Is there a way to solve the problem once and for all (tell the audio system "send everything through the digital device all the time")?
    (I read the relevant section of the wiki, but it is focused on getting sound out of your digital device, not making it the default.)
    Any other advice or gotchas about using digital audio would also be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    My .asoundrc looks the same as above. But just for fun, I also tried removing it and restarting alsa, with no change.
    I'm testing output by going to systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon and clicking the Test button with "HDA Intel (AD198x Digital)" selected. Nothing comes out through SPDIF, though it does play through analog (I have two separate pairs of headphones plugged in, one to the analog jack and one to a headphone amp plugged through the digital port) so I can tell which port the audio is coming from).
    I've checked the hardware volume, and it appears to be in order. The amp is not reporting any audio signal on the optical port. I tried switching out the cable just to be paranoid, and still nothing. I believe this is a software problem.
    Any ideas?

    after connecting a CharWise C5 Laptop Cooling Pad with Speakers (Mukii INC.) I lost control over audio in my macbook pro. and some programs have no sound. the audio Icon is grayed and when I press the audio control buttons on my keyboard I get gray icon with the disabled sign on it.
    I tried going to the preferences and select the internal speakers, it doesn't help.
    also when I connect my headphoes and press the volume control I get the same disabled icon.
    but I can hear sound in several programs like Adobe applications and vlc player. I get no sound at all in quicktime, iTunes doesn't play music and I can't hear sound from internet browsing.
    the Macbook Pro is 3 months old. but I have no time to take it to the store as I need it to work.
    Last time I updated my software through the App Store I got my audio control back after restart, next time I restarted I lost it again...

  • Lost Beats Audio Control Panel, Windows Experience Index and HP Power Manager on fresh install...

    HP Pavilion m6-1035dx, product B5S06UA#ABA
    Please help! I installed a 240gb SanDisk Extreme SSD and a fresh install of Win 7 home premium 64-bit OEM. I did not reinstall the factory OS and all that goes along with it. I have managed to reinstall all drivers (it seems) but am having the following problems: 1) I have installed IDT HD Audio Driver sp56953 but it does not provide the Beats Audio control panel, any idea how to get it? 2) The Windows Experience Index will not provide a performance evaluation, something in the system is providing it with an error message when it attempts to rate the system and it stops. 3) I have installed HP Power Manager sp57398 and can bring up the control panel but the changes I indicate will not stay applied, when I bring up Power Manager again it show that no selections are made. I knew this fresh install was going to provide headaches, please help if you can. Thanks.

    I suspect this may all be related to a common cause.
    When updating the windows experience index, what is the error message you receive?
    Has the video card driver been installed? It is necessary for the windows experience index to complete.
    Also, ensure the HP Software Framework is installed.  It is under the Software Solutions category.
    You did a clean install of Windows 7. Has all the software and drivers for Windows 7 from HP been installed? Here is a link should you need it.

    Hi,
    Try using Recovery Manager to reinstall the IDT HD Audio Driver ( this will also reinstall the Beats Audio interface ) - the procedure for using recovery manager to reinstall Software and Drivers is detailed in the document on the link below.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 8.
    Recovery Manager - Windows 7
    After the reinstallation has completed, restart the PC.

  • Function returning control via CType. Is this risk-free?

    I want an easy way to get a TabPage's child (user)control without writing CType() functions everywhere.
    For this I created a function that returns the control via CType:
    Private Function ChildIRCControl() As IRCControl
    Return CType(Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls(1), IRCControl)
    End Function
    Now, is this risk-free to do or are there any chances that it will bug or don't work in some cases?
    Thanks
    //Visual Vincent
    EDIT:
    Now to rephrase and explain my badly written question:
    The user is able to create new tabs, and for each new tab a IRCControl (which is a UserControl) is added to the tab's controlcollection.
    Now there's no problem doing the above. BUT since the tabs are created programmatically, I cannot get the control inside the tabpage without some kind of cast function.
    Example of creating a new tab:
    Private Sub CreateNewTab()
    Dim IRCc As New IRCControl 'This is a normal UserControl.
    Me.TabControl1.TabPages.Add("New Tab")
    Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls.Add(<a control that has nothing to do with this question>)
    Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls.Add(IRCc)
    End Sub
    Now to access the UserControl in the currently selected tab I need some kind of Cast function. I use CType for this:
    CType(Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls(1), IRCControl)
    But typing this long CType function in every If statement needed and every Loop used takes time, and is horrible to read.
    Now, will it work just like the normal CType if I access it like this instead?
    Private Function ChildIRCControl() As IRCControl 'The UserControl
    Return CType(Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls(1), IRCControl)
    End Function
    Private Sub ModifyTextBox() 'Example
    ChildIRCControl().TextBox1.Text = "Hello World!"
    End Sub
    Hope this explanation is better for you guys, and sorry for not bringing all this up before.
    I hope your day has been better than yesterday, but that it's worse than tomorrow...
    Please mark as answer if I solved your problem. :)

    Now, is this risk-free to do or are there any chances that it will bug or don't work in some cases?
    To make it safe you would subclass the Tab and TabPage controls and make this method a function of the new Tab.  Then, that class would include code to ensure that only your custom tab pages were added, and that for each added tab page the first
    control was the correct type - presumably creating it automatically or from a value passed to it in the constructor.  That control is then a property of the tab page, and there is no need to use the Controls collection or do any type conversion.
    The problem is that you actually have no control over the order of items added into the Controls array if you are using the designer.   Even if you are sure that each tab page has one of the controls, it might not be at index 1.
    You could scan the tab page Controls collection, but if there are several of that control type then you also need a way to know which one you really want.  That's what your code should be checking.   If you correctly identify the control in
    the collection there is no need for CType - it's already the correct type.   You can check the type without trying to do the conversion by using TypeOf.  See
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/0ec5kw18.aspx
    Thanks for the answer.
    I guess I could have added this to my initial question too: I'm creating the TabPages and UserControls programmatically and that's why I need to use some kind of Cast function. There are two controls in each tabpage, and they're added in this order:
    Private Sub <Some kind of sub>()
    Dim IRCc As New IRCControl 'The UserControl
    <The new TabPage>.Controls.Add(<The other control>)
    <The new TabPage>.Controls.Add(IRCc)
    End Sub
    So the only thing I wanted to know was if I could do this:
    If ChildIRCControl().TextBox1.Text = "blahablaha"
    ChildIRCControl().RichTextBox1.Text = "blabla"
    End If
    Instead of writing the long CType, or any other cast function all the time,
    If CType(Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls(1), IRCControl).TextBox1.Text = "blahablaha" Then
    CType(Me.TabControl1.TabPages(Me.TabControl1.SelectedIndex).Controls(1), IRCControl).RichTextBox1.Text = " "blabla"
    End If
    as it's both a readability and writability nightmare.
    And at last I apologize for the badly explaining question that I wrote.
    I hope your day has been better than yesterday, but that it's worse than tomorrow...
    Please mark as answer if I solved your problem. :)

  • Need help removing Creative Audio Control Panel

    So I've been trying to get the Creative Consol Launcher to work with my soundcard again and found that in my "Programs and Features" list in windows 7 there is one item of Creative labs software that I can not remove. It is called "Creative Audio Control Panel" and when I attempt to uninstall it it tells me "C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallSheild Installation Information\{7E96A7F-AFE3-47-87B-583E37639E8}\SUPPORT.Cab not found."
    Whenever I try to use the Creative Console Launcher it tells me "There are no supported audio device[sic] available. You need to close the application. Click OK to close the application now."? I assume it's trying to launch Creative Audio Control Panel which for some reason or other is no longer present on my system but was never properly uninstalled. Also, great work on that error message - seems like Creative needs more proof readers.
    In other words it seems the file I need in order to uninstall this broken program is missing - any idea what I should do? I've tried seeing if I can reinstall the program but I can't find any setup file for it online - all I can find is "Creative Console Launcher" which seems to intigrate a launcher feature into volpannel, but since it doesn't have the Creative Audio Control Panel to actualy launch it just gives me error messages if I want to get into my EAX settings or mixer or anything like that. If anyone knows how I can uninstall/reinstlal this program (in windows 7) I'ld be very greatful.

    Well I believe I have found a solution to my problem and it is manyfold so here goes.
    First off, Creative Customer Support Americas corresponded with me via e-mail and notified me that there are known issues with all PCI cards and Creative Audio Consol in Windows 7 (which is to say they don't work together at all).
    After getting this info I removed my SB 0790 card and plugged in another one I had handy - it's still a SB X-FI Xtreme Audio but this one is has a PCIe interface and a digital audio in/out jack on the back to boot - this card is manufactured not by Creative but by MSI (licenced I assume) and came with my motherboard (good thing I had it laying around).
    Initialy I had the same issue - even uninstalling everything related to creative and re-installing the hotest newest drivers from the site simply wouldn't resolve the issue. Finaly I downloaded a 3rd party program called CCleaner - a freeware utility that can clean up registry errors and delete items off the program list by force if need be (and it was in this case). I used that to completely eradicate Creative Audio Console and Creative Console Launcher, re-installed the latest drivers and audio pack for the PCIe card, and then even had windows update the driver again after that (the result of which was not a new driver version but it did seem to download and install something - no clue what). After all of that I once again had a functioning version of Creative Audio Consol back on my computer - and now it recognizes that I have a valid card installed and I've got access to all the features I was missing. The interface for Creative Audio Console looks a bit different than it used to (no longer a fake looking stero but instead a fairly plane interface) but whatever it's working and that's what I care about.
    Oddly enough with all those installs it never put Volume Panel or Creative Consol Launcher back on my computer, I wound up having to install those off of the MSI card's driver disk to get easy access to the Creative Audio Panel again (otherwise I'd have to either make a shortcut or go straight into the install directory any time I want to launch it - now though I can launch it right through the Volum Panel).
    One persistant issue still remains: In my recording audio device list I am still missing: "What U Hear" but it has been this way since I installed Windows 7 for the first time in October when it releaed, and I have given up hope on ever seeing What U hear again - If I want to record from my soundcard I have a 3rd party freeware utility called "Virtual Audio Cables" that are a bit clunky but get the job done.
    Conclusion:
    Though it may claim on Creative's support page for the SB0790 (Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Audio) soundcard that the latest drivers support Windows 7 it is abundantly clear that this is NOT the case. You will manage to get audio out of it, but almost no other creative aplication is going to work with your card or even detect that a valid working SB card is installed. It seems the only aplication I could get working relyably was the auto updator (which was able to see I had the card installed) and Volume Panel. By the admission of Creative Customer Support America, however Creative Audio Panel will not work, and I have observed that Creative Consol Launcher does not function properly either. Indeed even plowing through the file system you'll find support only for XP and Vista versions of the drivers - there is no Win7 specific driver for either this card or it's PCIe counterpart.
    Also don't expect to have access to the "What U Hear" utility - this goes for the PCIe version of the card as well. As ever, it seems the marketing guys are making claims about the card that can't actualy be backed up, sure it's techincaly illegal, but only if your customers are willing to start a class action lawsuit over a 50 dollar soundcard that sort-of works anyway.
    Issue resolved for now - and I am no longer pulling my hair out in frustration.

    Hi i uppdate my I phone 4 to iso6 via laptop ,during the operation the laptop restart it's self then I connect my iPhone 4 to iTunes again to finish the uppdating but its stuck to Apple log tried to restore it again via iTunes i get the same problem its stuck to Apple logo i tried to restor it from another pc i get the same problem anyone can help please

    Hi, did you ever solve this problem?
    My 1 year old -- ha! one month out of warranty -- iPhone 4 has been having a nearly identical problem over the past few days.
    It started by dying completely so I had the battery replaced, thinking it was simply battery issue.
    It then worked again for a moment but started doing exactly what you describe, going through a reset cycle (longer than 30 seconds but who's counting). And it felt quite warm.
    Did hard reset, plugged into wall charger and MBP USB but the new battery wouldn't even get a full charge (a whopping 92% after nearly two days). It would even lose battery when plugged in if I opened an app. And all the while plugged in, if I left the phone on, it would cycle through these resets. So I turned it off to try to charge it.
    Now suddenly, it's dead again. Totally black, and hard reset does nothing. Up until two days ago there was nothing wrong whatsoever with this phone! And I hadn't even installed a new app that could be the root of the issue. No idea whatsoever what caused this.
    Any help would be much appreciated!!

    Using my beats headphones this morning with my MacBook Air and iTunes.  Everything is up to date.  Although today now the audio controls on the cord won't work.  Normally I can pause iTunes or control the volume.  I do this multiple times a day but no go today.

    Also, in my 'About This Mac' info window, it shows my OS as "135122" instead of "Mac OS X" - I'm sure that's not normal.

    I did a reboot and repaired permissions, which solved the beats headphones controls not working.
    Still concerned about the Mac OS version display though.  Curious to know if anyone else has that as well.
