[SOLVED] xfce4-terminal doesn't tab-autocomplete with sudo commands

Wondering if this is a limitation of xfce4-terminal or something that can be enabled.
In xfce4-terminal, if I type pac and press tab key, it autocompletes to pacman. If I type sudo pac and press tab, it won't autocomplete. The same is true when trying to complete anything after starting with sudo as the first word of the command. Paths resolve fine though after sudo, just not program names or commands.
Fixable?

Thank you so much
I went for the option to add it in my ~/.bashrc file instead of installing the bash-completion package. Rebooted and it works!

  • [solved] xfce4-terminal spam after update to util-linux 2.25-3

I use the setterm command inside a file in /etc/profile.d so that I can prevent the screen from blanking when using a console, along with a couple of other things.
After the latest update to util-linux (2.25-3), whenever I open xfce4-terminal these lines show up:
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --blength
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --bfreq
setterm: terminal xterm does not support --blank
    [gilmoreja@JamesPC ~]$
Is there a better way to handle making sure setterm runs when a console is used, but not necessarily when a terminal is opened? Or is there some other way to solve this issue? There doesn't seem to be a switch for setterm for any kind of "quiet mode."

I think that the shell started in a console is a login shell, and it is not the case in a graphical terminal.
A login shell has a '-' at the start of $0; so you can test that and condition the execution of the setterm commands:
    if [[ $0 == '-bash' ]]; then
    setterm ...
    setterm ...
    fi

Anybody notice that the --hide-toolbars option is no longer plural (with s suffix)???  The plural form has been replaced by the singular (no s suffix) form.  The man for xfce4-terminal still shows the plural option.  This change occurred on the last xfce4-terminal update (Version 0.6.1-1).

Thank you, this was driving me crazy.  When I went to open a xfce-terminal (not xterm), it would not "focus" on it.. it was driving me nuts.
Needless to say, I checked, and rechecked, and rechecked my settings for focus.. probably messing something up in the process, all because exo was bugged (!!!??).
(bump me, but now they got to fix Thunar.  Thunar is not updating files in folders.)

  • [SOLVED] xfce4 automounting problem on usb dev with utf8 encoded files

I have problem of auto mounting usb external drive contains utf8 encoded files under xfce4.
Using hal and dbus for usb device detection.
Heard that I need to add iocharset=utf8 under fstab or hal fdi configure files and tried them all but didn't work
usb devices with vfat always got mounted with default charset.
I found out that exo-mount is the one doing the actual mounting and that it is the one that cannot take all extra mounting options such as iocharset etc.
Have tried gnome to mount this hard drive and works find with nautilus option that let me set various mount options for each harddrive.
Is there any way to replace exo-mount with some other alternative mounting tools that work with thunar?
Any workaround will be helpful as long as I can mount my usb drives with prefer charset so that I don't have to guess all ???marked files.
Heard that xubuntu replaced that exo-mount with gnome-mount to handle drives with extra mount options such as iocharset.
but I am pretty new to configuring things and couldn't find the step by step instruction for this so please provide the complete solution.
Link to the pages that explain workaround would be nice as well.
    Thanks in advance!

Found the patch for exo-mount so that it takes additional mount options HAL suggests.
    https://bugzilla.altlinux.org/attachmen … ction=diff
Now my usb drive can be mounted with the proper charset.
Hope this patch helps others with similar situation as well!

Thanks, but that actually defeats the purpose of using "makepkg -ef". ./src is where you do changes to the source files to then recompile.

  • XFCE4 terminal and colors

I'm not really sure why I'm trying so hard to make the xfce4 terminal operate like urxvt, but whatever.
XFCE4 terminal doesn't seem to pick up my color settings from .Xdefaults (probably because they are for urxvt ) but what is interesting is that the colors are different once again while in screen. If I open up vim or whatever while in the bare terminal, I get one set of colors (that aren't too bad, honestly) and when I open it up while in a screen I get another set of colors (which are awful.)
Any ideas on how to make things more consistent?

The screen thing might be something with your .screenrc... I'm really not sure on what you have to change, but you can try appending this to it:
    term screen
Looks like I've got to manually set the colors individually. Should be fun. Thanks.

  • Terminal automatically executes sudo command on opening?

I am running Lion 10.7.5. I tried to execute a sudo command but remembered i did not have sudo privleges on my account so i logged onto the root user and executed it there. Getting back on my regular account i opened terminal but it automatically executed the sudo command again and if i exceeded the password attemp limit it just re executed the command and looped infinently. I now cannot use terminal on my account. I have deleted com.apple.Terminal.plist from its location and still nothing.

Did you accidentally put a sudo command into one of the following files?
    .bash_profile
    .bash_login
    .profile
    .bashrc
Or does one of the above files run a script that tries to execute sudo?
If you cannot get a command prompt you can use Terminal -> Shell -> New Command to issue one command at a time.

  • [SOLVED] Xfce terminal open links with wrong browser.

After installing Opera as second browser, xfce terminal began to open links with it, instead of my default browser - Firefox.
I right click on an URL, choose 'Open Link' and it opens in Opera.
Firefox is set as default browser in Settings -> Preferred Applications -> Web Browser
    xdg-open http://archlinux.org
    - opens Firefox
    exo-open http://archlinux.org
    - opens Firefox
After quick search through xfce terminal sources i found it uses some function - gtk_show_uri.
I googled it, found that topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140028 and tried the solution:
    cat ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list
    [Added Associations]
    x-scheme-handler/mailto=exo-mail-reader.desktop
    x-scheme-handler/http=firefox-browser.desktop
    strangely it doesn't help.

Tried BROWSER envar - doesnt help, and as i understand it must work only for cli apps.

  • Tab 2 with latest updates = Square Register doesn't work

I have just bought a Tab 2 A 10-70 and installed the latest updates for Lollipop.  When I try to swipe a card on Register it doesn't allow it.  It states an error, Unable to Swipe, for the card swipe, and closes Register, but also says I need to uninstall and reinstall Register.  I have attempted this many times on other devices, Samsung S4 and S6, and they work with no problems.  I have also tried swiping on the Tab 2 with my eyes closed and nothing.  Is there anyway I can get this to function properly?

I think I have this figured out.  I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab A at Target for $50 more.  It has better software and I know it will work with Square and PayPal.  I'm returning this tablet, as the support for these devices is far from acceptable.  I base that on the numerous replies I've received so far, and the issues other users are having with this tablet, as it was sold and upgraded with a ton of un-tested features with unresolved bugs. Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Naming terminator tabs by the command currently running

I want terminal tabs to each have names of a command that is currently being run in each one. If a tab is "idle" (no command running) the tab name I want is $PWD.
I found a way to name it $PWD, yet I have no ideo how to set it in case a command is running. Terminator (by default) is set to represent itself to system as xterm.
I always have atleast 3 tabs open, and I just want to avoid the confusion.
    EDIT:
I use zsh as default shell.

  • [SOLVED]Which terminal is right for me?

Please help me choose a good terminal. I have viewed a couple of posts, but haven't found what I have been looking for.
I'm looking for the following features in a terminal:
    * Copy with CTRL+INSERT, paste with SHIFT-INSERT. (On my computer, I cannot middle click.) These keys are actually as standard as CTRL+C and CTRL+V - Unfortunately xterm doesn't support them.
    * If you have the terminal open in Window 1, and you open a new terminal in Window 2, it should appear in Window 2. (LXTerminal opens in Window 1 like gedit.)
    * When you press CTRL+Left and CTRL+Right, you skip through typed words left and right. Similar to vi's "w" and "b".... Almost all GUI programs have this feature. (rxvm terminal doesn't.)
    * I would prefer not having a menu bar, as that takes up space.
    * I do not care for transparency.. it actually gets in the way.
    * I do not care for tabs.. I'm using a tiled window manager.
    * I do not care for a scroll bar. (Just use SHIFT+PageUp, SHIFT+PageDown.)
    * Speed is of importance... usually terminals are pretty fast though...
As you can see, my needs for a terminal are relatively simple.. I would expect the top three "features" that I ask for to be present in all standard GUI programs, but for some reason they are not.
Does anybody know of a terminal that can do what I noted?
    Thank you,

  • Terminal doesn't login

    Hello,
I will write in a non-very correct english (I am italian) and I want to offer you my bigger thanks for the attention.
I would want to use a certain phisyc-simulator that i found on the web (wich format is .exe), and so i've tried to get Wine, a free program that make you able to open .exe on OSX (in my case 10.5.8). Following the instruction for Wine's installation, I had to run a certain ./file but the wine installation wrote to me (in the terminal window) that this operation (the installation) can't be completed with the root user, but have to follow the same instruction with a secondary user.
So, i've tried by first to do the same installation's step in the Guest user (the one in wich you can't save changes by logging out) but the terminal stayed empty for several minutes. I thought that the problem could be the use of the Guest user, so i've come back to the administrator one and i've created a secondary user (with no administrator "power") , but the terminal doesn't work neither here.
Now, the terminal is still not working even with the ADMINISTRATOR user.
    Can someone help me?
    p.s.: i've some experiences with the terminal, by the need of compile and execute in fortran; it's not new;
i've already searched online a way to solve this problem (for example i tried to see the Console's messages, and i tried to remove the file                             com.app.Terminal.preferences (or something like that) while logged white the secondary user (but not the Guest one))

Thank you BobHarris you are very nice.
-I've tried to delete the come.apple.Terminal.plist in the admin. account   -----> doesn't work  [does it exists in each accounts or is it just one for all?]
              -iTerm2 doesn't work
-Installing Onyx and browsing to find the hidden files you told me ( .profile , .bash_login   etc...etc..) THE FINDER GAVE UP WORK!!!
Even by cmd+rightclick on finder icon to click on re-open (traslated by italian "riapri") i had the error message 101800 or something like that.
I solved the problem by switching off the Mac with the button... Once turned-on again the Mac ( it was a moment full of pain ), all worked fine.
After had verified that the computer didn't had big problems after the trouble with the finder, i continued to search the hidden files.
They don't exist in my Mac but LUCKILY i had the impression that execute the login file in   /usr/bin     could be the solution: it worked!!!!!!!
I had this idea because of that the problem was just the login at the terminal....  A terminal window opened quickly and asked me with wich account I wanted to login... LUCKILY i wrote the good account_name and password and all gone fine!!! (the terminal works again)
    So,
thanks to seventy one for the link http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ (i think install Wine will not be a problem now)
    thanks to BobHarris too
