Some grey pics after moving G4/iPhoto5 on 320G HD to MBP/iPhoto6 120G HD

I've searched this forum a little bit but haven't seen anything like my case, so I'm posting a new thread.
I recently moved everything from my dying PM G4 to a new MBP 15". Because the G4 can't boot to target disk mode and is so unsable, I took its internal HDs out (a pair of 320G SATA) and enclosed them to become external USB2 HDs, mounted on MBP and copied the iPhoto Library folder, among other things, to MBP's internal 120G HD (more about this later).
At first it appeared OK but I didn't do a thorough check as I had many other environment/configurations to finish (AirPort, backup config, iTunes, etc.). A week later, after I imported some 60 pics from my camera, I scrolled up and noticed 1883 pics (out of total 12342) from some early rolls show up as grey rectangles, with the exclamation mark in Edit mode. Not all the earliest pics are masked, but most prior to 2004, and a few from a roll in 2004. Right-click Show Info shows that their meta data are intact. However, Show File switches apps to Finder but couldn't bring any Finder window up, not to mention the picture itself.
The tricky thing is the pics are right there in the Originals folder in their Rolls and can be opened via Preview. Permissions are good (yes I even tried BatChmod). I tried to rebuild the library (apple-option and checked top 3) with no avail (no error msg). And, of course, iPhoto wouldn't let me re-import in-place because they're already in Originals.
So, my conclusion is, it must be that the internal HD doesn't have enough space for iPhoto6 to successfully rebuild the library (I remember it did some kind of conversion the 1st time it started. Remember the old library was iPhoto5 on the G4.). iPhoto says the library takes 28.9 G. Finder says iPhoto Library folder is 44.94 G, with 33.87 G in the Originals. The system HD has 38.9 G free space. I know you folks have repeatly said OS X wants a 10G swap space, but I'm not sure how iPhoto uses HD (maybe in /tmp?) when rebuilding library? 10G is exactly the difference between iPhoto's 28.9G and system HD's 38.9G. Could it be that iPhoto needs at least 43.87G (33.87 + 10) free space so it can rebuild the library? Could there be other possible diagnosis? I'd like to get some expert opinion before I wipe things off the system HD and rely on the backup.
You might ask why didn't I point iPhoto to the external HD to begin with? Well, I didn't know how to (or bother to figure it out) because I had 320G internal and never thought I'd need it. Duh. But now this gives me a new concern: If it's truely the system HD running out of space, then it wouldn't matter where the Library is located and how large that disk is, as long as it out-grows my system HD's free space (which shrinks everyday with all the updates and additions), it's doomed. In that case, is booting from an external HD the only solution?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You have plenty of disk space. Stop worrying about it. Rebuilding the library involves rebuilding the db file (the library6.iphoto file) not the entire folder. So the process does not require gigs and gigs of disk space.
The discrepancy between the iPhoto size and the Finder size is because the iPhoto reports the size of the current version of the pics, the Finder reports the total installation - Originals, Modified, Data and ancillary files.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. When you moved the iPhoto Library Folder did you move it as a single unit or in parts?
Do you still have the old v5 library? If so, it might be worth trying again, as otherwise it looks like a case of db corruption. If that's the case, then your option may only be to populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Finally, you can move your iPhoto Library Folder at any point, there is simply no need to panic about your available disk space.
Regards
TD

If you are using Apple's Mail app 6.5 is the latest version irrespective of what a previous poster says. It does sound though that you are using a gmail account online via a web browser. Please confirm and fill in missing information.

  • Failed boot after moving hard drive (IDE not SATA)

    Greetings all.
I am attempting to setup a headless box, and in doing so I am installing Arch on one system (Sapphire Axion A3-M275 Motherboard), then moving the hard drive to the new system (SGS1660, a VIA CLE266/VT8235 based headless rack-solution). After moving the drive into the SGS1660, the system fails to boot. Attached output from the Serial Console:

I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone

  • How do i play my videos in flash file after moving SWF file to website?

    Hello all,
I am having some problems showing my videos in flash after moving it anywhere besides my computer.
I published my flash file once as a exe. file and sent it to another computer, where it all worked but my videos, which didn't show up at all.
I also published them as SWF files, then put them up on my free website (where i don't have access to the ftp) and the videos still aren't there.
The videos will play fine in an SWF file on my computer, but i am assuming when they are away from the videos, they don't have a source to access them.
I also tried sending the videos along with the SWF files when sending to other computers and it still doesn't work.
I now have a free hosted website (with wix.com if that makes any difference) with my flash work on, but no videos. I even tried to embed a youtube video into the scenes the videos are meant to appear, and put the videos on youtube, then i discovered you can't put that sort of HTML into flash.
Does anyone know how to show the videos on these sort of website, or even better, how to keep them in original file when sending them, so they show on other computers.
Sorry if I've waffled but I'm trying to clear up my situation .
Any help would be super, many thanks,
    Flasher87

i am using the website wix, so in order to put the swf file up you just click the "Upload SWF" button, so i don't know how i could put the videos along with the swf, the swf is just sat on the page once i upload it.
second, when using this type of website do you know how i'd go about giving the website the permissions to play flv files?
    Thank you.

  • I recently purchased Windows 8 laptop and installed Office 2013. I then installed iTunes. After moving all my music to the new PC, I got iTunes to import it and sync it to my iPod (3rd gen).  However, I cannot get iTunes to sync my Outlook Contacts

I recently purchased a Windows 8 laptop and istalled Office 2013.  I then installed iTunes. After moving all my music to my new PC I got iTunes to import it, and then synced it to my iPod (3rd gen.) However, I cannot get iTunes to sync my Outlook Calendar or Contacts with my iPod.  When I try it crashes Outlook.  iTunes continues to try to sync, but when it finishes my Calendar and Contents are empty (ERASED!).  I have de-installed and re-installed iTunes (according to Apple's instructions), repaired Office 2013 and Outlook, scanned for viruses (etc), cleaned out temp folders, defragmented, etc., etc., etc. Has anyone seen this before, and does anyone know houw to fix it?  (HELP!)

Well, I guess I have to download some other software to make my apple product work. Really great stuff you guys sell. I will never buy another apple product. My Iphone, Ipod and Itunes are junk

  • Bootcamp - The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.

I know what you're thinking; this question has been posed before. But my circumstances are different.
Sooo I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 15" Retina, late-2014 model on Monday. After some initial setup (moving my music, downloading programs etc.) I moved onto the last thing I needed to do - set up bootcamp (primarily for gaming I admit).
Specs: 2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage - In total the files I moved onto it left me with about 890GB free on the HD.
At this point I had made sure everything was updated as far as I was aware.
I received the error message "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." I was trying to make a 151GB partition but also tried going down to 40GB and received the same message. I tried several solutions I found online including booting in cmd+s and typing in some codes, I checked the disk with disk utility and it was fine.
Nothing much for it and I was feeling lazy, I backed up with Carbon Copy Cloner (I much prefer this program to time machine) and reformatted. Clean install of OSX Yosemite and the Macbook looked like it had just come out of the box. Before I even attempted to restore using CCC I started up bootcamp again: same error. With essentially a brand new Macbook Pro right out of the box, near to 1TB HD space free.
I've taken it to the local Apple store but they "Don't have any support for bootcamp in-store" and I'm out of the house for 12 hours a day with work (I'm actually at work now). Plus you know, I require food and such, so I don't get much time to get in touch with Apple support directly.
The guy at the Apple store recommended Parallels or Visualbox; note that I want to use bootcamp. I like the extra power and I have a copy of Windows 8.1 from a previous Macbook Pro that worked wonderfully through bootcamp. This should work as far as I am concerned and I don't want to accept anything less to be honest.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Loner T,
Thanks for your suggestion, however I did a step wrong and I am facing another bigger problem.
Step 1 was to use time machine to backup OSX, looks like I failed to do that, and only backed up the data instead. Because after I erase my internal disk, I cant restore from TM.
So now the situation is that I can't access my HD, can't reinstall Mac to that hard disk (it is not detected), Cant use DU to repartition the hard disk as well, option not selectable.
    What can I do now?

  • Bootcamp - the disk cannot be partition because some files cannot be moved

Hi, I have been using boot camp for a while and everything was working fine but over time, windows were picking up some virus so I did a stupid thing of removing the whole partition thinking that I can re-partition again and install a clean windows system.
But to my horror, I got an error message saying "the disk cannot be partition because some files cannot be moved". So I decided to defrag my MBP, after almost 14 hours later the MPB is defrag but I am still getting the same error.
Looking around, I found this quote "On a side note, it actually doesn't have anything to do with fragmentation. It has to do with compacting the disk so that no files are on the outer sectors of the drive. You could have a 100% no fragmented file system but still have gaps between data and data on the outer sectors of the disk. They need to be moved to the inside of the disk. Boot camp will usually do this for you but the problem is if a system file, swap or something can't can't be moved while the OS is running is out there it can't be moved.. thus the error."
Bottom line is what can I do to install bootcamp again? will wiping OSX and reinstall from Time Machine solve this problem? I don't want to waste another day wiping everything when it's not going to work.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Just a quick update, I made sure I had the latest backup on my Time Machine and then I wipe my MBP and restore from Time Machine. The restore was completed however, when I try to boot up from my MBP, it wouldn't start.
I get to the Apple logo screen with the loading icon under that and it stays there forever. The only thing I can do is a hard shut down (press the power button for 10 seconds).
This is turning into a bit of a nightmare!

  • Unsupported image format after moving from one project to another

I scanned several thousands of images to my Aperture library. Went thru all of them providing adjustments to many of them, keywords to all of them and adjust date/time to all of them. All of the pics were visible, format is jpeg.
This is a managed library (all pics within Aperture db).
This morning started to restructure the project files (had three of them). After moving couple of hundred images to newly created project file I started seeing "unsupported image format" red screen after clicking the jpeg. 20-30% of the pictures clicked showed on viewer "unsupported image format".
Tried regenerating the previews. Tried command-option start with first fix the preferences option. Then with rebuild option.
Tried moving the pictures back to their original project file.
No joy... Still 20-30% of the pictures show the "unsupported image format".
    Aperture 2.1.
Amy other tricks I could try?
Reported this to Apple aperture feedback of course.

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
+Note: there is no importing involved+
The thumbs appear, but the images are added 2 or 3 times each and the events are all messed up.
This happens when you import one Library to another, which you've done by drag and drop:
Creating a black library and over writing the new with the old.
Your problem is arising because of the Network Share. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Deselect after moving will delete content!

    Hello!
I have a huge problem with the selection tool and I need to know how to fix it because it totally destroys my workflow. (Photoshop CS6)
If I move content of a selection and deselect a part, it will delete the part I deselected. How can I turn that off?
I want photoshop just to deselect my selection without deleting anything so I can keep moving the rest of my selected contend.
    Greetings Legolars
    Edit:
    How to reproduce the error:
    1. Select a part in your picture
    2. Use the Move-Tool and move the selected content
    3. Switch back to Selection tool and now start to deselect parts of the selection
3.1. This will delete the deselected are, which I don't want to happen!

    Hello,
sadly that's not what I want. I describe what I'm doing.
I did some sprites. For the complete animation I want to move some pixels and  adjust those.
Therefore I select the whole Layer. I move it so the first row of pixels fit with the next frame. Then I want to substract the first row so I can keep moving the the rest.
While I try to substract the selection. It won't just substract but delete all pixels inside!
I don't get it why it suddenly is removing the picture inside?! Photoshop never did that before!
Someone exatcly has the same problems as me:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4377148
What I don't get. After moving I switch back to the selection tool which means the "transformation" should be done by that time.

  • CPU initialization hang on bootup after moving computer

Sorry for the crossposts, but I am unsure where to put this.
After moving my system across country I have encountered a problem.  When I boot up my K7N2-L with 2200 and MSI GF4 4200, the system hangs on "processor initialization," as indicated by the D-bracket LED display.  Removing *just the VGA card remedies this problem and the system moves to boot up properly.
What could be the cause of this problem?  The only way I can see the VGA card affecting the CPU is by insufficient power or a short in the system.  Would this be a mobo problem, a CPU problem, a PSU problem or a VGA problem?  the system had worked fine months before I moved it.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Nathan

I have already pulled  everything out and put everything back.  That is how I found out it works without the video card- process of elimination.  So, when I have everything BUT the video card in there, it works.  When I have the video card in there, it doesn't.
How do I know it is the video card causing the problem and not the video card interface, or the PSU or some power related issue within the system?
Any other ideas?  I've already cleared the CMOS and I have not been able to test the system with other components.

  • Can't open Numbers file after moving it back to Mac from Dropbox

Please help!  Can't open Numbers file after moving it back to iMac from Dropbox.   Says I need the newer version of Numbers each time I tried to open the file.  I am 100% sure that I had the newest version.   Spoke to the AppleCare guy and after doing the checks he is also sure that I had the latest version of Numbers and AppleCare can't help.  He suggested that maybe i should run it on a file repair program...any suggestion?... please help...

I've read reports of people having trouble when storing Numbers 3 documents on Dropbox.  I think it's related to the fact that they're not really "files."  They're "packages" that look like files. I had thought that Dropbox had cleared this up with their latest update. You should be on Dropbox version 2.4 or later.
If you have Time Machine you may have some luck going back in time and restoring the document from a previous version.
Storing Numbers documents on iCloud works much better, at least for me, and (unlike Dropbox) iCloud facilitates automatic syncing to other Macs and iOS devices signed into the same Apple ID.
Perhaps you could consider keeping Numbers documents in iCloud instead. iCloud is deeply integrated into the app, and now works well.

  • "Disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" NO RECOVERY PARTITION

After defragmenting my disk the old-fashioned way, I lost my recovery HD partition. I am currently working to get it back.
That was in an attempt to create contiguous space for Boot Camp Assistant. While that error is now solved, a new one has popped up: it says some files cannot be moved.
I am hesitant to repartition the entire drive again. Is this the only thing to do at this point?
I tried running FSCK from single user mode. It didn't help. I can run disk utility from an external backup drive, but isn't that the same as FSCK? I'm honestly not sure so please answer if you know!
    (Click thumbnail to enlarge)

You just run Boot Camp Assistant and that downloads drivers.
Using Disk Utility does not setup the Master Boot Record for native dual boot.
    BCA or CampTune does.
If you had 10.6.x DVD that has Apple drivers (wish they would just NOT call them also "boot camp" it confuses people).
Print and read the pdf, the FAQ, the install guide.
    Draw inside the lines.
Boot from Windows 7 to format.
But yes a lot of people can avoid and still use most non-gaming, non-3D or hardware gobbling resource intensive apps with a VM.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

After moving a Keynote (6.5.3) presentation from my iMac to MacBook Air, the slides have shrunk WAY down. Check out this image. Any thoughts on why this should happen?

I love Lion, it's been problem free and it has so many useful features (Air Drop for one, multi screen on the MBA for another). I think as with all things that sell on the scale Lion has, some people will always be disappointed and some will always have problems. I am happy to say neither were issues for me and I wouldn't go back to SL now.

  • Finding and installing cartridges after moving to a new country

HP customizes some products and cartridges to meet specific local customer needs. During your initial printer setup, the printer automatically set itself to accept cartridges specific to a country or region. If you take your product from that country to another country, you might not find cartridges with the same number on the label as your original cartridges. These cartridges will not work in your product even though they appear to be compatible with it. If you purchase cartridges that you believe are compatible with your product, and then try to install them, you might see one of the following error messages:
    'Incompatible Cartridges'
'Cartridge Not Intended for this Printer'
    'Incorrect Cartridges'
