Some windows off screen and inaccessible when 2nd screen disconnected

If I am using an application totally on a second screen, I often disconnect the screen without closing the application and/or window. I haven't yet pinned down the cause, but it may be if the system is put to sleep, the second screen disconnected, and then system woken. Anyway the precise cause is not the issue here.
I get just a small side portion of the window, and there is not enough of the top bar to allow me to drag it into focus. What is the easiest way out of this situation?
My current "solution" is to re-connect a second screen, but often that is no longer around!

  • Application windows off screen while using external monitor

    Hi,
I am using my MacBook frequently with an external monitor attached (lid closed). It happens now, that some applications (e.g.Finder) open windows outside of the screen. What can I do?
This is especially annoying when I want to copy a file and Finder opens the 'Replace/Stop' window and I can't do anything because this windows is outside of the screen (I only see it when pressing F10).
    Any ideas?
    Gernot

I had this happen last night. I was moving a window and it dissappeared. It was off screen. I could see it wit F10 but that was all. What I did was close the window under file in toolbar. Then I opened a new window under the same command in the toolbar. This brought the new window up in the visible window. Hope this helps.

  • Turning off headers and footers when printing a web page.

Is it possible to turn off (or reduce the size of) the

it to work with my computer and a specific printer.

Of course, but It's not a problem with logical inches per se.
    The
logical inch is just another way of looking at what is meant
    by the
screen dpi value. Scaling problems, with different dpi
    settings, has
always been a Windows problem and results from the way that
    the OS
handles scaling. Fonts scale perfectly. Actual windows, and
    other
containers, don't. This is a problem programmers have
    grappled with
since the first Windows OS. Vista is the first OS to try to
    tackle this
    problem.
    >Thus, percentages or ems work best when cross-platform
    compatibility is
    >desired."
And that is because the users screen dpi, and hence logical
    inches, are
totally irrelevant when specifying ems and percentages.
Ems and percentage equate to a number of pixels, not inches.
The sole purpose of screen dpi setting is to convert anything
    sized in
physical inches into a number of screen pixels. That is the
    _only_
purpose of screen dpi. It's a very simple algorithm.
(physical) inches x screen dpi value = number of pixels
How do _you_ think a font sized in points (inches) gets
    translated to a
specific number of pixels on screen. I'd be interested in
    your answer.
For the screen a conversion from physical inches to pixels is
    always
necessary because, as you say, pixels are the unit of screen
    measurement
but they are not just a "standard" measurement, they are the
    only
consistent measurement. It's not the users program that
    creates pixels
on screen but the Operating System. The program requests the
    OS to
create a given font at a given size and the requested size
    _must_ be in
pixels. Windows can't _directly_ create a screen font that's
    specified
in points (inches) because it has no notion of what a
    physical inch is
on screen. It does know what a logical inch is because the a
    logical
inch is defined by the screen dpi value. That's what the
    screen dpi
value is for. If a browser programmer wants to bypass the
    variability of
screen dpi on different computers then they ignore dpi values
    and work
directly in pixels i.e. in ems or percentage. When ems and
    percentages
are specified one is dealing only in pixels.

Of course it makes more sense to set font size specifically
    in pixels
because that's the only unit the OS can use to put something
    on screen.
I can't see where you get the idea that either Michael Bowers
    or I have
said that there is a unit "defined as 1/72 of a logical
    inch". Every
Windows program written takes it that there are 72 points to
    a
    _physical_ inch.

You are implying I've said things which I haven't. I have
    never, at any
time, said one should use points or inches in designing web
    pages. You
seem to have missed the point that what I am doing is
    explaining why you
see the results you do on screen when those unit are used.
    Somewhat more
informed than "Points are only for print because I don't know
    what they
mean on screen, so they must be meaningless".
    >As Eric Meyer says on page 110 of "Cascading Style
    Sheets: The
    >Definitive Guide" (2nd Edition), "points can be a very
    difficult

And again, I've never advocated using them in page design. A
    close
reading, however, from page 83 onwards shows that Eric Meyer
    has an
imperfect notion of the meaning of screen dpi. Heresy!! He's
    hardly
alone, which is why I did a web site.

    so.
Once again, I have never advocated that. You are setting up a
    straw man
to knock down. You can do better than that.

  • Windows boot hangs at logo when 2nd SATA drive attached

    Hi,
    I have a system with a K9NBPM2-FID mobo.
I have several IDE drives and two SATA drives installed.  The two SATA drives are a 150GB WD Raptor and a 320GB Seagate.
I've had this system for awhile, and the Raptor is installed in the computer case, and originally, I had the 320GB Seagate in a trayless SATA enclosure (which is in the case).  When I had that configuration, the system would occasionally hang on the Windows logo screen (the one with the scrolling bar), and I'd have to pop the 320GB out, and then it'd reboot ok.
I thought that maybe the trayless enclosure might be getting flaky, so when I doing some work on the system recently, I stuck the 320GB drive into the enclosure and connected it directly to the mobo via a new SATA cable.
Since then, I've noted that "hanging at boot" behavior more often :(...  And, now that the drive is in the case, I can no longer just pop the 320GB drive out anymore :(...
The 320GB drive itself seems to be ok, i.e., once the system boots, it seems to work ok.
At this point, I'll probably pull the drive out of the case, and put it back into the trayless enclsure, but I was wondering if anyone might know what the problem might be or suggest how I could get this system to boot reliably with the 320GB drive plugged in?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

    Hi,
I don't know if this may be involved, but I was doing some googling, and found this:
    http://blog.tfanshteyn.com/2007/09/system-freeze-and-sata-command-queuing.html
The Seagate PDF for the 320GB drive specifies that it does support NCQ:
    http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_barracuda_7200_10.pdf
I checked the driver settings for the SATA drives under Windows Device Manager, and I noticed that "enable command queuing" was checked on all of the SATA channels, but I figured I'd try disabling that "enable command queuing" and see what would happen.
I've done several reboots after that, including powering completely off, etc., and the system appears to boot ok, now, even with the Seagate 320GB drive plugged into the trayless enclosure.
I'll keep any eye on this, but I'm hoping that maybe that was the reason for the problem.
    Later,
    Jim

  • Windows stops responding and closes when I try to print

I have IE 9 on a vista 64 bit.  Recently I had some problems with print jobs staying in the que.  I resolved that and reinstalled the printer and drivers.  I have a photosmart 5514.  Ever since that day I can't print off a webpage.  Coupons, bank statements etc.  It says windows stopped responding and closes the webpage.  I have been unable to fix this.  Also since that day my microsoft works wont' work.  It says I have corrupted fonts!

It is a wireless connection.  What happened first after a year of flawless performance was I was asked to print a statement from my banks website.  I tried several times and it kept shutting down with the windows error above.  I was unable to print anything from that moment on.  I spent half the day finding the problem and discovered my WP network key was changed.  I have no idea how trying to print from the banks site did that.  I called them to report the situation since it was so strange.  Even asked them if they knew what that number even was.  I still had issued so I just uninstalled the printer and used my installation disc to set it up again.  Now I can print off my documents, PDF or Word but my Works files come up with the message that the font cache is missing or renamed.  When I searched that I found it isn't uncommon and that it is usually a corrupted printer driver.  I loaded it off my CD from HP.  Not sure what to do now other than try to uninstall and reinstall.  Just haven't had a time with work to do that yet.  Also when I try to print off an email, webpage or even a coupon it does the windows has to shut down message.  This will be my last HP printer.  I have problems all the time with them and have owned nothing but HP for over 20 years.  Four computers and printers in the house right now.  I just can't deal with que issues and buying new printers every two years because I have a home office and must have it working.

  • Images off colour and overexposed when printing

Hi folks I'm new to the site. I have been using adobe software for a good few years at this point, and i have been trying to solve a problem with my friends Photoshop and illustrator. every time she prints out work, its all off colour and over exposed like the colour preferences are messed up.
When printing a word doc or regular jpg images there is no problem. It only happens when trying to print in Photoshop or illustrator.
I would really like some help
    Thanks

What are her color-management settings and practices?
Is she set up to use appropriate color-profiles while designing/editing, using a calibrated/profiled monitor to display the designs or photos in accurate color, and using appropriate settings and profiles for print color-management?
Do the prints come out to match what's displayed if the image is sent to a service - or you print them on your setup?
Does what is displayed in Photoshop match what is displayed in the other apps being printed from?
Has it once worked, and now it doesn't - or is this a new setup?
This is a case where the specifics matter - very much.  Color-management settings and practices cannot usually be "guessed" into working.  And to make matters worse for those struggling to understand, there is the possibility that there are bugs in printer drivers, bad monitor profiles, etc.
Unfortunately, it's near impossible to teach proper color-management concepts, so that the user can make all the appropriate choices, on a forum.

  • 'Installing OS X' window off screen

Hi all, I've started the upgrade to Mavericks from 10.7.5. After my laptop rebooted it got to the 'Installing OS X' (translated from Czech) screen. The window is however partially off screen so I can't see the bottom of it (no progress bar or buttons). I am not sure if I can just wait for it to complete or if there is some other step necessary such as clicking an OK button which I can't see.
Does anyone remember what happens next or how long this should take?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Mbp '11 : windows ejects keyboard and touchpad when safely removing flash drive

If i connect a flash drive or an external hard drive, Windows will eject the keyboard and touchpad when "Safely Removing" any connected USB device, whether it be a printer, flash drive, or anything connected to a USB port.
As a temporary workaround, i either connect an external USB keyboard & mouse and restart windows, or set the power button to shutdown and restart windows.
    any way to fix this?

I don't get that with OS X, the light stays
on at full capacity, i.e., it doesn't even dim, and
it makes me feel that this is something that might
call for a 'fix' in OS X.
when you insert the drive it "mounts" to the desktop, right? in other words you can see it on the desktop?
as everyone else suggested, drag it to the trash to eject it, or do it using the finder. once you no longer see it mounted to the desktop, it is safe to remove it, light or no light.
i have usb/firewire drives which i made using internal drives and enclosures with power buttons that remain powered up once i dismount the drives. i eject them and zap the power once i finish using them, if i don't want to listen to the enclosure fans. in a nutshell, it's not OS X related that the light doesn't go out because it doesn't perform like the other OS, nor does it attempt to emulate it; they go about performing tasks quite diffently and OS X is much better ; ))

  • Window off Screen - cannot resize -  Apple should fix this

As much as I love my Mac, I am really frustrated and fed up with the goofy design of the OS X window resizing and moving.
There have been many posts, web articles and so on complaining about the difficulty of resizing a window whose bottom edge is off the screen.
I currently cannot edit a Mail rule because of this. I have tried about five or six Applescript "fixes" supplied by various folks but none work.
This is just an appallingly bad GUI design decision in OS X. Apple should take a hint from some of the linux desktops and allow window resizing via the mouse from any location in the window.
    Fix it, Apple.

I take it you're talking about the dropdown panel in Rules panel in Mail > Preferences, when you click Edit?
You must have a rule with a whole lot of conditions and/or actions.
    What is your screen resolution?
I just experimented a bit, and suspect it's a bug, not "bad design". I notice as I add lines, and the panel approaches the bottom of the screen, the scroll bars appear, so the panel quits growing, as it should, but only 2 lines after they should. It looks to me like the height of the tool bar isn't being considered properly.
If that's what you're seeing, report it that way in the +Mail and Address book+ forum. If others see the same behavior, one of the top posters there may be able to report it, or you can call AppleCare and they can tell you how.
I doubt this is a condition many folks would see, so it probably hasn't come up often, if ever.
If I misunderstand what's happening, please clarify.

  • Software window off-screen

I remember having a similar problem years ago on a PC and there was some startup file that had the coordinates for the window specified that i could delete or edit. Is there such a thing I can do here?

Here is the area of the desktop where it is.
I also tried the "assign to" desktop trick, but "assign to" is grayed out.

  • I changed from vista to windows 7 ultimate and now when i try to sync or get music from one device to antoher it basicly will not do it and wants to wipe my music because it is now not associated with my itunes?

    help?

Did you backup all your documents and data first? Normally your user profile contains a Music folder which in turn holds the iTunes folder. All the important details of your library are in there, with the media below in a folder called iTunes Media. If you lose this information and then connect your device to an empty iTunes library it will want to clean it out the device and start over.
    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new windows installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • New windows are hidden and inaccessible. How can I get to them?

    Mac 10.6.6 - Firefox 4.0
If ever I accidentally open a link in a new window it does not show up. It is listed under the Window menu, but no where else. I have tried all the Mac shortcuts to get all windows to show, but it is never among them.
The only thing that fixes this is to completely shut down firefox and restart it.

I've had the same problem but I have a work around for it.
    1. Do you use dual monitors?
    2. Is Firefox displayed on the 2nd monitor?
    My solution:
    1. Move the visible Firefox windows to the primary monitor.
    2. Close Firefox completely.
    3. Open Firefox.
As long as you keep Firefox on the primary monitor, you should be able to open new windows and drag tabs to create new windows as much as you want.
P.S. Any devs reading this, please fix!! Its really annoying.
