Songwriting workflow suggestions needed!

Hi,
I am a beginning/intermediate Logic user. Am writing songs/tunes... and am experimenting all over the place. This is leading to an Arrange page nightmare.
For instance, I usually sing a melody over chord changes... so there's my A section let's say. Then I reharmonize the chords a few times before I find just the right combination, then I sometimes fiddle with the melody, then I come up with a few possible B sections... then I have a few arrangement ideas - one bassline.. perhaps a different one... maybe I'll transpose a B section...
Anyway - you get the idea. My arrange page is a MESS. And I mute parts and then listen back - and really end up wanting a little from this take, and this one... and ...
I get confused.
Who has workflow suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

What you need to do is comp your takes to one master track, this applies to the bass, the guitar, the flute - whatever. Once you have taken all of the best bits and put them on to a master track, you can put all of the unused bits into a folder, label it "bass takes" for example. Then - very important - change the track from being a folder to being "no output". This way you are assured of not accidentally unmuting things you don't want to hear.
I find that color-coding various takes helps to keep them straight. I usually use red for my first take and move through the color chart for each later take.
So, read the manual about packing folders, coloring objects, changing the track type (from audio to audio instrument to midi to folder to no output).
Organization is crucial. While you are at it, read about saving as a project. You at least want all of the audio files relating to a song/project in one folder. Don't worry so much about having the samples in the project folder unless it is a project you will be moving to another studio.
It also helps to choose the option "name audio files after audio object" on the page that assigns the record path. You can then name the object according to the instrument you are recording. If the object is named "Bass", the takes will be named "Bass#01" and so on.
You have some reading to do!

  • LR Workflow Suggestions Needed

Now that I will be processing all my RAW images through LR, I'd like someone to help me with my workflow. My current workflow is a bit complicated, and may have to stay so, even with LR; however, if anyone has a good idea on how to simplify it, I'd appreciate it.
I am a Pet Photographer (www.NYPetShots.com) and I usually shoot around 130 photos in an outdoor session. This is what I do, as of now.
I shoot RAW and JPEG and import them into the computer with Canon Breezebrowser.
I review all of the shots, in Breezebrowser, and eliminate both the RAW and JPEG duplicate shots which I feel are absolute losers.
I rename and renumber the RAW and JPEGS in Photoshop Elements 3.0, so that they are consecutively numbered and the RAW corresponds to the JPGS; so, Steven107 is the same in RAW and JPG, and so on, and so there are no gaps in the numbers.
I reduce the JPEGS in size around 1/3 in PSE, so I can put them on my SMUGMUG page for the client to review, in a password protected file. I lightly process a few in PSE to include in an email to the client, with the password, so as to give them some idea of what we can do with the finished product.
I import them into the PSE organizer so I can go along with them and the client on the phone. I import the RAW into the LR library.
This seems very cumbersome. What I must do is prepare JPGS in the same naming convention as the RAW, so they can go onto the web for viewing. They must be reduced in size for easy uploading. I have to be able to refer to the exact same named RAW file as the client refers to in the JPG file.
In any event, I'll have to take my finished RAW and export it from LR and finish it in PSE for a quality JPG to send to the printer.
So, does LR give me tools to simplify this? If so, what would you suggest.
    Thanks
    Steven

Its not a question of what I don't want. I need to eliminate the ones that are simply not presentable and let the client see all the rest, including those which are marginal. So, when the client looks at them on the web, it makes a better presentation if they look at Steven 1 through 120, and don't skip from 87 to 94. Gaps are no good. When they say they like Steven 37, I need to be able to find the exact RAW image to work on.
I guess I can do some experimenting to see what a RAW to JPG shot looks like, without applying any adjustment to the image. I have to present something good but not finished to the client. I can't process 120 shots, when the client is only picking 5 or 6. (BTW: Most of my shoots are outdoors, where lighting and other conditions change frequently and fast. It is very rare that a shot is absolutely perfect right out of the camera, and it is not possible to apply the same changes to a most of the shots at the same time. I can batch process groups of shots taken with the same backdrop or locale)

  • Looking for some RAW + JPEG Workflow suggestions

I'm looking for some suggestions on how best to organize my workflow now that I've started shooting with RAW +JPEG. I previously shot only in RAW, but the time spent in post-production was killing me. I've realized that for 95% of my shots that already have the correct exposure, white balance, etc, a JPEG photo is really all I need and saves me a ton of time. I've become convinced that editing every single photo from a shoot in RAW is overkill. I want to have the RAW versions, however, to rescue that occasional great shot where I unfortunately miffed the settings.
Through reading other posts here and experimenting, I've found that Aperture basically defulats to showing me only the imported RAW photos and that I need to click "New Version from Master JPEG" to see the JPEG version. This seems counterintuitive to the workflow I'd like to establish though. (i.e. I'm thinking it would be nice to see only the JPEG versions, and then only bring up the RAW version when the photo needs some serious correction).
I suppose I could highlight the entire batch of imported photos and select "New Version from Master JPEG" and then sort through each RAW/JPEG stack, but I'm still hoping there's a less cumbersome way. Anyone out there have any good workflow suggestions for this issue? I'm curious how other people out there deal with this issue in their workflow.
    Thanks in advance!

Try this - I do this as a matter of course:
-select all of the photos after importing them into a project
-create a new album from selection/call it JPG
-with all of the images still selected create new version from master JPEG. all of these should now be the album pick
-close all stacks, the JPEG will be the one showing up on top for that album.

  • Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.

Looking for Pre-Rendered Editing / Color Grading Workflow suggestions.
All my material is rendered via RenderMan, our resolution is 1280x544, and our format is generally .exr in 32 bit space.
Our editor has been converting over to 32-bit tiffs, and using Apple Intermediate Codec for editing, mostly for speed concerns.
We need to re-vamp our workflow so that we can edit our footage, and then do color grading of the edit head to tail to smooth the look between scenes. We want to do this in Color, being fed by Final Cut Pro's timeline.
We want to keep our bit depth as high as possible when coming into Color.
My question is, does anyone here have any workflow suggestions for doing what I am talking about.
I wasn't sure if we should just export and EDL from FCP and try to get Color to load our single frames from that. Or if there is a special Quicktime wrapper we should be using, or converting our 32-bit .exr files into some other format more readily available for using in Color?
Any thoughts would be great, thanks in advance!

You're not going to get anywhere beyond 10-bit. That's it.
Try encoding to 10-bit LOG dpx if you need upscale RGB.

  • Suggestions needed please!

I just bought an ipad 3 and when I connected to my computer it said "Not Charging". Also, not able to sync with itunes.  Suggestions needed please!

Most usb ports do not provide enough power to charge your ipad, plug into a wall outlet to charge. If you leave it plugged into the computer and the computer goes to sleep, it can actually drain the battery.

  • Disk configuration and workflow help needed for lab video workstation

    Hi All,
Setting up a video editing workstation for a research lab that will use Premeire to edit AVCHD Progressive clips (sometimes with 2 streams side-by-side, but usually single-camera) and export them to .mp4 for later viewing by video coders. We won't be using AfterEffects or adding anything to the videos other than some text (titles, maybe sub-titles).
The other purpose of this workstation is to act as a file server and backup system for other machines in the lab. Coders will be viewing the exported videos via other networked machines and working with Microsoft Office files that will be stored on the workstation's other HDDs. I'll have a physical backup drive and cloud backup via CrashPlan.
I've built a machine that is probably overkill, but the client (my wife) wanted it to be "fast," and the purpose of the machine might change in the future:
    i7-4770K (overclocked a bit)
    16GB RAM
    Asus Z87-Pro
    GeForce GTX 660
I have the OS (W7) and programs on a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD and currently have two 1TB Velociraptors to use for the Premiere workflow. I'm trying to figure out how to proceed with the purchase of the rest of the drives, and I want to keep the Premiere drives separate from the large storage drives from the lab that are networked and synced to cloud backup.
Following the recommendations for a three-disc configuration I've picked up on these forums, I could set it up like this:
C: (256GB SSD) (OS, programs, pagefile)
    D: (1TB HDD) (media, projects)
E: (1TB HDD) (previews, media cache, exports)
F: (4TB HDD) (backups of media, projects, and exports and storage of other research files)*THIS DRIVE WOULD BE SHARED ON THE NETWORK
G: (4TB external HDD) (backup of F & drive that backs up to CrashPlan)
but it seems that would be a waste of the speed of the second 10k velociraptor. If I added another SSD and RAIDed the Velociraptors it would be:
    C: (256GB SSD) (OS, programs)
D: (Two 1TB Velociraptors in RAID 0) (media, projects)
E: (256GB SSD) (media cache, pagefile)
but would I then need to add another dedicated HDD for previews and exports, or could I store those on the networked F: from above (which would be previews, exports, backups of media and projects, and storage of other research files) without taking a speed hit?
It seems overkill to have a dedicated drive for exports and previews (let's make that the new F:), then have them copy to the first 4TB drive (now G:), then back that up to the second 4TB drive (now H:), then back that up to CrashPlan. However, people might be accessing that network drive at any time, and I don't want that to slow any part of the video process down.
I appreciate any advice ya'll can give me!

    Hi Jim,
Thanks for the encouraging response. I'm leaning toward the non-SSD option at this point.
To make sure I understand, are you suggesting I try using the Velociraptor Raid 0 in the 2 disk configuration suggested by Harm's Guidelines for Disk Usage chart? Like this:
C: (256 GB SSD) (OS, Programs, Pagefile, Media Cache)
D: (1TB x2 in RAID 0) (Media, Projects, Previews, Exports)?
Where I'm still confused there, and in looking at Harm's array suggestions for 5 or more drives, is how performance is affected by having simultaneous read/write operations happening on the same drive, which is what I understood was the reason for spreading out the files on multiple drives. Maybe I don't understand how Premiere's file operations work in practice, or maybe I don't understand RAID 0 well enough.
In the type of editing we'll be doing (minimal) aren't there still times when Premiere will be trying to read and write from the D: drive at the same time, for example during export? Wouldn't the increased speed benefits of RAID 0 for either read or write alone be defeated by asking the array to do both simultaneously?
Maybe the reason the Media Cache is on the SSD in the above configuration is because that is what will be read while writing to something like Exports? But that wouldn't make sense given Harm's chart, which has the Media Cache also located on the array....
Another question is, given that the final home of the exported videos will be on the big internal drive (4TB) anyway, could I set it up like this:
C: (SSD) (OS, Programs, Pagefile, Media Cache)
    D: (2TB RAID 0) (Media, Projects, Previews)
E: (network shared 4TB HDD) (Exports + a bunch of other shared non-video files)
so I don't end up having to copy the exported videos over to the 4TB drive? Do you think it would render significantly faster to the RAID than it would to the 7200 rpm 4TB drive? I'd like to cut out the step of copying exported videos from D: to E: all the time if it wasn't necessary.
    Thanks again.

  • File naming issue/workflow help needed...

I shoot weddings and am continually frustrated with A2's file naming. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated as it's killing my workflow.
THE GOOD: I import the images with the file name I want and the metadata I want. I then edit out, deleting bad images and leaving borderline images (as outtakes) in the project while putting my selects together for the client in a smart album. I put the selects in a smart album based on their rating and keywords. The selects are not sequential, so I "select all" and make "batch change" putting them in sequence.
THE BAD: Here is where I always encounter my first problem. Any images I have have worked on (in Photoshop) for my website now have different names. So when I export all in the album, the worked-on versions don't fit in sequentially. And some stacks have the edited image on top, and others do not.
The other problem is when a bride places an order. I find the corresponding file and externally edit it. It now resides in the smart album with a different name than all the files around it. I put the print size in the exported version name and I have to open the dialog box for every single image and re-type the size in the custom name space. I have an order with 295 different images and it's killing me. The other problem is when the bride goes to re-order a print she has, the number on the back has no connection to the numbers on my site or the smart album.
I find I'm going back to Photomechanic more often just to organize and name images because it actually changes the name of the file instead of "masking" it as A2 seems to do.
Is there a way to keep A2 from doing this and how do I get the adjusted image to be the pick of the stack?
    Thanks-Kevin

I happily paid the 20 bucks for 'A Better Finder Renamer' and was able to have it batch rename RAW files to my needs. It uses simple Boolean logic to cut or add to a file name and can read time stamps from the file.

  • SUGGESTIONS NEEDED: Graphic Designer needing to organize my graphic library

Ive been wanting to find a better way of organizing my extensive library of the following (Vector & Raster art): Backgrounds, Raster/Vector Patterns, Logos, Icons, Vector Design Elements, Fonts (I use FontBook), print & web templates, Stock Photos, ALOT of vector art, anything from flourishes to multi colored complex images, Web Design stuff (icons, buttons, banners...etc.) and last but not least Adobe CS native color swatches, patterns, gradients, actions, and brushes.  I am sure I left out some, but you get the idea.
I have been building my large collection over the period of 4-5 years and has grown to 40g of internal HD space to house these in loosely catergorized subfolder (i.e., Vector Art, Stock Photos, PS plugins (gradients, brushes, ETC) backgrounds/Textures, so on and so forth.  I would love to store my Data externally but with the throughput speeds of USB, am not wanting to slow down Bridge anymore than it already is. But help with external storage and accessing files quickly would also help
As your probably thinking it is getting to be a pain to manage and even worse finding or searching for items, considering alot are generically names from packages Ive acquired (i.e. 132456.eps. flower00234.jpg, etc.)  Bridge helps alot but I am trying to catergorize and keyword folders or images this as clean as possible hopefully thru manually doing it on a system recommended or using a 3rd party software to apply metadate like keywords that will be searchable is IDEAL!
I am starting to use Lightroom 3 to manage and catalog my StockPhotos (not to many), but love the functionality of the keyword and meta data features within LR.
So that is what I am trying to accompish:
    1. organize all my art in to specific catergories
    2. hopefully use metadata and keywords within the OS or a 3rd party program to make items easily searchable within the Finder or Adobe Bridge.
    3. Properly manage and store art as it comes to me several times a day to keep everything current so I can do a backup of just my Design files, every month or so to keep stored off computer or on the cloud.
Any suggestions(software/procedures), links, or general help on this issue is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks Again for any help lended!!! Any anyone that is willing to help me thru this and is interested in Graphic Design tools or graphics, I can definitely share ANYTHING from my collection for helping
    Drew

Dont mind one bit, if i can pass along any advice to help someone, Im happy to do so.
first off....My art catalog is mass collections of various file types, and media uses, so I started by keywording by some of these keywords; Vector, Web Graphics, Stock Photos, Patterns (Vector/Raster), Textures, Backgrounds, Shapes/Objects (vector/Raster), and after indifiying a sorting the various files, just in folders and sub-folders, under one main Artwork Directory, and that helped me organize them for transfering between my home office, to my work server.  After that it was pretty much a breeze except for one issue I ran into (I will explain at the end).  Since I run Bridge at Work and at home, the structure and navigation to search for files by catergory was alot easier, by mimicking the same setup on both Bridge for PC at work and Bridge for Mac at home.  the last step I did to help refine things a little better, I keyworded two things within Bridge to make the search faster, and it was just these tags, Vector, Raster High Res, Raster Med-Low Res. I also use the ranking/star system to tag my most used, favorite.  1 star for frequently used, and 5 star for my favorite art packages. When I use the word "favorite", in my terms that is art that i see potential to use in future designs and good clean art that Ive never used, so I can incorporate new designs.  That might not be the best way to do it in Bridge, but after bouncing around alot of approaches this eems to work just fine for my graphic/web design needs.
One more thing that I do as I acquire new art, is make a Folder with a custome icon to stand out, that is labeled Un-Catergorized art.  And as I download art unless I use it right away, I drag and drop into that folder.  I was advised to not do this and label and file appropriately as soon as I aquire stuff so I dont get behind, but to aleviate that, I have made automator actions that move all files that have been in the folder for more than 5 days to move into a diferent folder (Delete Me), and have put an automation on that folder to delete files that are 3 days or older (in that folder).  It may sound like alot of work just to remind, but by adding another automator action in Mac OSX to email me when the first move is made, It trained my mind to process all new art every friday like clock work, and have since stop using the email action and the delete after 3 days action!  With the size of my library....getting close to 60gig....and consisting of a wide array of different media, I found this to work for my workflow.
Give this a thought, because this may help you in some way, but everyones catalog is different.
The only current problem/issue that I am trying to resolve at the moment is catergorizing and tagging (somehow) all my Creative Suite Plugins for PS, and LR.  Because it is getting pretty extensive, with patterns, actions, swatches, shapes, styles, etc...
The issue I ran into with processing VECTOR art in Bridge CS5, was the lack of support for previwing .EPS files, and took a good chunk of my vector art and converted to a native AI file to be able to view the preview in bridge, but there is work arounds I found.
Bridge has really been awesome for someone like me, and learn something new about this robust program everyday.
As far as PS & LR plugins, I could theroretically just add everything I get to their respective plugin system folder on my drive, but I move them around alot and found it easier to search my folder structure and COPY/PASTE plugins in the system folder as needed and clean out the system plugin folder every so often.
I just installed CS5.5 Master Collection last night, and even though Bridge isn't the same build as the changed DW 5.5, and indesign 5.5 (all the rest of the master collection for the most part NOTHING changed, even though its labeled as 5.1 instead of 5.0 or 5.5.  So I will be doing some research on this to see if any new features were added in Bridge but doubt it
Hope this helps! and feel free to ask anymore questions
    Later, Drew

  • Workflow Suggestions Please - Adjust Colour, White Balance, Levels, Resize

    Hi,
I have a number of photographs which I need to present in a consistent fashion - each is slightly different from the next in terms of exposure, levels, white balance etc, but they should all be the same. Because each is different, I can't simply define a preset in each of these and apply across the board: each needs to be consistent....
So Can anyone suggest an efficient workflow to:
    - Adjust the colour so that each is consistent across the group?
    - Adjust the levels so that each is consistent across the group?
    - Straighten, Crop and resize so that each is an identical size?
Any advice much appreciated. I'm working with CS3 on a Mac.
    D

Image: Adjustments: Match Color? I have never found this useful but maybe it's what you need. I would use it on a duplicate layer because as far as I know it's not available as an Adjustment Layer.
As far as canvas size, as long as you don't have any background layers, you can make all canvas sizes match and it's non destructive (think of the canvas as a window)
When you do end up scaling the image contents consider using Smart Objects so the sizing is non-destructive.

  • Workflow suggestions for CS4, Sony XR520 (HD) & TRV18 (SD-MiniDV)?

    Hello all,
I'm working on my first video "production" in a long while, and it's my first time delving into the world of HD and mixed formats. So I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.
This is the workflow I was USED to:
Connect camera to computer via FireWire(MiniDV-SD-60i)
    Launch Premiere 6.5
Use Capture Utility to set In/Out points and bring in as AVI clips
Import those AVI clips into bins and edit directly
    Save Timeline out to AVI
    Encode to final output format
SO, this is the situation I'm faced with now:
Two cameras. Main camera is Sony HDR-XR520 (AVCHD-1080i). Second camera is Sony DCR-TRV18 (DV - MiniDV - 30fps Interlaced - 60i?) for time lapse shots/filler shots.
My final output is going to be computer/internet playback (I'm assuming I'm going to need to output to a progressive format, 24P or 30P. Am I right on this?)
Any suggestion as to what my workflow needs to be?
    My assumptions:
    Edit using a 1080i30 (60i) timeline(sequence)
    Edit XR520 clips directly
Import TRV18 as avi clips, put in timeline, but only use clips to fill 1/4 of the HD frame (don't try to up res)
Export to AVI, encode to mpeg4 and remove interlace.
Am I going in the right direction here, or am I all wrong on this?

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, I guess that's the thing: the final output, while it will be computer/internet playback, doesn't necessarily have to be at full hd. In fact, I'd rather it be 1280x720, since not all laptops (typical of what our sales people will have) will be able to handle playback of HD video. I really just want them to be able to play this video back in PowerPoint or directly through WindowMedia/QuickTime at 100% or fullscreen mode, and still be high quality to the viewer (typically in a conference room/board room, on a projector, an large monitor, or directly on the laptop screen)
I've seen SD internet video that plays back really well in fullscreen mode (on a typical 1280x1024 monitor), but I don't know what export settings will yield those type of results. Any good tutorials on getting SD video to encode and play really well at monitor resolutions?
It'd be nice to be able to use the SD timelapse footage at full size, but I was planning on only using that timelapse footage in multiples (2-3 clips playing at SD size on an HD timeline). As far as PAR, if I was to manually place black bars on the 4:3 footage, would I be able to export in native 16:9 PAR so I could then edit it in a 16:9 timeline?
So, going along with your suggestion, would I need to convert all my HD clips FIRST to 1280x720, then edit on a 720 timeline, or edit on a 1080 timeline and export to a 720 output?
Also, am I right that since playback is on a monitor/projector, that I'll need the video to be progressive?

  • Workflow Suggestion

Hoping someone may be able to set me off in an efficient direction...
I have 2 libraries of 130GB and 38GB (one is an older, pre RAW processing and now my current - all RAW) All my new photos will continue to go in the new RAW library. I primarily work on my desktop where the libraries reside, but I would like to continually update my laptop with my libraries, particularly for when I travel. I use Time Machine back up on a 1 Tb drive. I also have a 640GB portable that I can "drag and drop to or a 500BG Time Capsule no longer used for backups. I am not currently using vaults, as I am not sure with Time Machine I need them, but am starting to think differntly.
My primary question is, what is the best way to update the laptop with ongoing changing libraries?
SHould I be implementing Vaults and restoring from them? Right now I drag and drop libraries from imac to drive to laptop-VERY long. Also, if vaults are the way to go, should I/could I keep the two libraries on separate vaults?
any suggestions for making this less painful welcome!
    thanks
    Nancie

There ain't one way to do what you want, there are many. As your system gets bigger and maybe your needs change as it does, you need to be in a versatile position with whatever you choose.
At the present i use Managed when mobile then transfer to Referenced when it is convenient, and back up manually Project by Project keeping the Projects small ( Aperture works better too with smaller projects ) so they are easy and quick to retrieve if need be. I may also keep a separate copy of rated images/versions. A typical workflow would go like this:
Card Reader Download to MBpro > Rate the whole project with 2 Stars > A quick scan through to re- rate + or - > Trash the rejects > Empty Trash > Back up the Rated ones to usb stick > Format the card in the camera. Hope that helps. Allan

  • Subtitles, still not possible? Workflow suggestions please.

    Hi all,
I have a client who wants to have (burned in) subtitles under an excisting piece of video.
I was thinking "He... No problem in PPro", but to my surprise this isn't really possible. I've been searching the web, and besides the same question going back to !!2006!! there's no real solution.
The only suggestions I found are about doing this in Encore. But the problem there is that Encore cannot export to .mp4 or Flash video. Or export the video and have the subs burned in for convenience sake.
I could treat all subs as titles in PPro, but this would take a lot longer. I cannot understand this basic functionality isn't available for PPro.
We don't all have Encore installed just for the sake of adding subtitles to a video.
If anyone has a good workflow for stuff like this, I really like to hear it. Preferably without resorting to installing all kinds of exotic apps and weird file shuffles.
    Thanks!!
    Rob

    OE =  PEBKAC I guess.......
I'll ask the admin to install Encore as well, as it might be handy to have installed next to PPro. Didin't know it comes bundled with it. Never had the need for it...
In the meantime I found an interesting script for AE called "pt_ImportSubTitles", that will import a Encore subs .txt file with all the timecode intact. From there you can go back to into PPro and import the AE comp as overlay on the videotrack.
Still a bit cumbersome, but workable for now and a lot faster than adding it one by one in PPro. Also the subs are still editable in AE, so it's a bit more fluid while working with it.
It would be very handy to have something similar in a future version of PPro, as subs don't always have to be on a DVD only.

  • Stack mode and rating images-WORKFLOW SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

I have a couple of issues when working in stack mode.
The first is that although I can rate the image that is bordered in white I don't see an easy way to rate the image with the yellow border?
The second thing that gives me fits is how when I am in stack mode the up and down arrow keys skip over unstacked images while editing.
My workflow now is to take two passes through a set of images. The first in stack mode to get the stack picks and alternates set. The second pass which I do in Primary mode is to rate the images. This has the disadvantage of not rating the stacked images which are not the 'pick'.
Anyone got some suggestions from their own workflows?

    Sailor,
The problem with the opt + return item is that it kicks you out of 'Stack view' into 'Primary' and if you want to return to 'Stack view' then you have to do 'opt + t' and you have lost your place in the stack. (i.e. in a stack of 7 if you were looking at items 1 and 4 when you return to 'Stack view' you are back to looking at 1 and 2 again)
CONFUSION POINTS: I was using the keyboard shorcut card that came in my v1.0 Aperture box, some of those shortcuts are no longer correct. I have also found that not all of the shortcuts on the current PDF Quick Reference are working as expected.
I recalled that you can use 'opt =' or 'opt -" to increse the rating on the yellow bordered item. This might lead you to expect that opt 1-5 would assign ratings to the yellow border image but those shortcuts assign metadata.
I think a part of my problem is that I have been working with much too large stacks. Stacks work better for me if they are smaller and contain images that are visually equivalent but differ in minor details that need magnification to resolve. • Suggestions needed regarding two mirrored Logic Pro workstations

    Hey gang,
A friend and I recently decided to start collaborating on some music projects together. Our goal, is to have each of our logic DAW stations mirrored, so we can easily trade Logic Session files over the web. We're working with electronic dance music mostly, so audio samples and soft synths will mostly be used.
I'd like to ask if anyone has any suggestions regarding how we should go about mirroring our two systems. Obv, we'll each need to own the same sample libraries and AU plug-ins. We've agreed to do that.
The obvious solution is to 'clone' our OSX install drives, but I don't think that's entirely desirable. we've each got a TON of apps/stuff the other doesn't want.
Open to any suggestions regarding workflow / process here,
Thanks in advance for any help~!

What about hardware output assignments... will the master output 1-2 function fully on his alternate hardware setup?
Regarding 'samples', do the samples all have be in the exact same finder locations on each system? I can see how over time we might have a few variances between the 2 systems.
    Thanks for any help,
    C

  • Workflow Validation - Need Help

I'm fairly new to video editing. Everything below I figured out through trial and error until I found a sequence that seems to work well. I just want to know if it's the best I can make it. Storage space is a non-issue. I have no intention of burning to DVD. I'm not interested in sound settings right now. All of the videos sound good enough. I'll mess with that once I've got this workflow tweaked.
I want the following three files at the end of my projects.
    1) HD Quality MP4 files that I can play on a PC or PS3. I chose MP4 because that's the only format so far that I've found that the PS3 plays. I'm open for recommendations. These should always be deinterlaced.
    2) Good Quality MP4 files that I can post on my webserver for relatives to download and watch.
    3) The best master copy I can get from FCE for future edits. Is this a good idea?
    My Hardware/Software:
    Television - 1080p 65" JVC
    Mac - Macbook Pro 17" C2D 2.5g / 4g Ram
    FCE 4.0.1
    Toast Titanium 9
Camcorder: HG10 1920x1440 60i (Most of my filming is of kids running around. Open for discussion on 24p?) I've been archiving M2TS files from this camcorder for a year. I do not have the original file structure for my archived footage, just the M2TS files. In the future I can import direct to FCE (Tested it and it works fine), but I like the idea of having my source M2TS files with 5.1 sound in-tact.
    MediaInfo 0.7.7.58
Step 1: Use Toast 9 to convert M2TS to .MOV for import into FCE. MediaInfo on source M2TS Files:
    General / Container Stream # 1
Total Video Streams for this File -> 1
Total Audio Streams for this File -> 1

    Step 2: Import to FCE
Select Sequence Preset - Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60
When I drop the clip on the timeline, I get:
"For best performance your sequence and External Video should be set to the format of the clips you are editing. Change sequence settings to match the clip settings?" - NO
    edit FCE project and render
Step 3: Export to MP4 for PC and PS3 Playback
Export -> QT Conversion -> -Options
    File Format - MP4
    Video Format h.264
Data Rate 8000kb/s (Is this the best option?)
Image Size 1280x720HD (1920x1080 looks interlaced?)
Frame Rate 29.97 (Defaults to 30. Why?)
Key Frame Every 24 frames. (Why?)
    Video Options
    Restrict Profiles to Main (ipod?)
Encoding (Assume best quality is what I want? Why?)
Media Info on FCE MP4 Export:

    Frame Rate -> 29.970 fps
    Total Frames -> 579
    Display Aspect Ratio -> 16/9
    Scan Type -> Progressive

    Video Stream Size -> 18.4 MiB (98%)
    Video Stream Language -> English
Date of Original Encoding -> UTC 2008-11-07 02:18:44
Step 4: Export FCE to MP4 for Web Use:
Don't have this sorted out yet, but I reckon I'll use the QT Conversion with h.264, 640x480 or something slightly smaller with Preserve Aspect Ratio/Letterbox/Deinterlace
I know there are a ton of details here. If more is needed, please let me know.
    Thanks for the help,
    John

OK, I'll bite. I don't understand the point of Step 1 - Use Toast to convert from .M2TS to .MOV.
I could certainly be missing something, but M2TS and MOV are container formats. So you are really doing two things: converting the video/audio from AVC/AAC in an M2TS container to something FCE can edit, namely AIC in an MOV container. I don't understand this step. FCE's log and transfer does this exact same thing (convert AVCHD to AIC), except without the external software. So, why use Toast if FCE already does this? You can also add metadata to the clips as they are imported so you can make heads or tails of them later.
I'm still learning too. So I hope this reads as a question
