Sony DSR-25 DVCAM deck is no longer recognized by FCP

I have not used this deck for quite some time as I have been experimenting with HDV lately, but now when I attempt to us it, FCP will simply freeze.
I am running OSX 10.5.1 and using Final Cut Studio 2.
According to the Apple website this deck is supported.
I have tried trashing prefs, and switching to "non controllable device".
I am not even able to force quit with the deck connected.
Any ideas?

I don't know if the 4 pin / 6pin thing is relevant either, but the DSR45 can't do insert editing with any form of input. You can only do assemble editing whether you use firewire or analogue inputs.
The DSR1500 has a 6 pin connector. We normally use analogue inputs (component) when working with ours because of our physical layout. I can't remember if I have ever done an insert edit using firewire (I usually use an old AVID and analogue signals for the insert work I do), but in that scenario (using a DSR1500P because we live in the PAL world) there is a loss of one frame of audio when the insert ends. I am not sure if this only applies to the PAL version of the deck.

  • Found an older Sony DSR-PD100A DVCAM for $25 at Goodwill. Will Premiere Pro CC handle this format?

    Hello all;
Found this nice triple CCD mini-DV cam cheap and it works well. I have no experience with the Sony DVCAM format, so am unsure how PPro would respond.
Tape is a pain, but some of the things I shoot only require SD video. IIRC, this format puts a low load on the CPU, so maybe editing with it is worth the effort?
Lastly, would I have to buy some kind of digitizing card, or only a Firewire port card? Seems that as I think back, folks using mini-DV had to buy capture cards for their computers.
Would using this cam with PPro require all sorts of additional equipment, like decks?
    Thanks,
    JE

It looks like the camera has an ilink connector (firewire). If your computer has a Firewire port you should be able copy from the tape to the pc using Premiere. As you said, you might have to buy a firewire card.

  • Battery for Sony DSR-11?

I have a Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck and woul dlike to use it on battery power. Is anyone doing so and what battery are you using? I would prefer a storage batter to a "rechargeable" one.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the suggestion, David.
I bot this deck a few months ago and first asked the video rental agency where I do a lot of business, figuring they'd use batteries with everything. In this case, they didn't.
I have send Sony an inquiry and was hoping to find some recommendations for a particular battery here.

  • Sony DSR-1500a not recognized by Mac Pro 2009

My first post. Hope I'm doing this right....
I have been working with a Mac Pro 1,1 Quad (OS 10.5.6) using a Sony DSR 1500a DVCAM player/recorder with out any issue using firewire 400 and Adobe Premiere and FCS2. I have recently purchased a Mac Pro 2009 (OS 10.5.7) with FCS2 and with Avid MC 3.5.
I cannot get the DSR-1500a to be seen by the OS or FCS2. The only twist is that if I daisy chain my DSR-1500a thru my Avid DNA Mojo. I can capture into Avid Media Composer no problem. I use a FW400 (6pin) from the DSR to the Mojo and a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable from the Mojo to the Mac Pro.
I am starting to assume that using a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 cable does not work with the 1500a. I do not see it listed in system profiler when connect directly to the Mac Pro. I have adjusted the DSR setting to iLink and also have tried 9Pin setting but neither work. Tried more than one cable as well.
I can successfully connect my cheap Sony TRV38 via a FW400 (4pin) to FW800 cable but not the professional deck...Go Figure...
I know it's not the deck as it works with the Mac Pro 1,1 using the FW400. Is there an OS setting I am missing? Do I need to buy a FW 400 card? Please help! Thanks

As I suspected... I had to buy a 1394a firewire card to enable the communication between the Mac Pro and the Sony DSR-1500a. Apparently the DSR does not subscribe to the reverse compatibility that Apple has forced on us of going from a FW400 (6pin) to FW800 (9pin) in reverse compatibility mode. I guess Apple can take the Sony DSR-1500a off of their qualified hardware list. If I have missed something, someone please enlighten me. Until then, looks like Apple has struck again. Oh I know, I'll go out and buy a $1000 capture card. Wow! I thought I was getting a well engineered product, instead I got a money pit! Forcing a Mini Display Port down our throats, NO firewire 400 ports, 8 slots of ram on tri-channel memory...Who's the engineer that came up with that one? Screeeaaammm!!!
OK I feel better now... Who do I make the check out to? %#@^

  • Need Vi to control a Sony DSR-20 (RS-232)

I need a VI or Dll to control and monitor a Sony DSR-20 DVCam player/recorder through RS232. If somebody has one or knows were I could get one that would be great.

I did a little checking on the web and came up with one link that might have something worth taking a look at:

If you don't get any responses from anyone else, you might try contacting Sony as well. I would think they would have to have some sort of API for this device.

  • Sony DSR 30 Deck not recognised

    Hello,
I'm running FCP 3 & 5 and I use a Sony DSR 30 deck. The deck works fine on FCP 3, but having just got a new mac running Tiger and FCP 5, it no longer works.
I have checked on the Fire Bus and it is not listed. My other Firewire devices work and are listed when connected, just not the DSR 30 deck.
I have also trashed my QT receipts and re-installed QT manually, but this has not improved matters.
If my deck is nor showing up on the Fire Wire bus is it fair to conclude it is not supported?
If so is there a fix?
    cheers,
    Dame

    Try a firewire bus reset:
    - unplug ALL firewire cables from all ports on the computer
    - unplug the power cord from the computer
    - let the computer sit for 15-30 minutes (probably takes less time but you want to make sure all power drains from relvent capacitors on the motherboard)
The key point is if there are any connections to the firewire ports on the mac, the machine will not reset the firewire bus.
Also, the sequence of reconnection is important:
    - connect the deck to the computer directly (no daisy chaining)
    - power up the deck
    - plug in the computer
    - power up the computer
    - check for the presence of the deck using system profiler.
After this if the deck doesn't show up in system profiler, time to take it in for service.
If the deck does show up but doesn't work with FCP, the quicktime-trash receipts and reinstall is the usual solution. It has been noted to take more than one attempt to get it to 'take'.
    good luck.

  • IMovie 9 can't Sony Camcorder (DSR-370) or deck (DSR-11)

iMovie 9 not able to recognize a Professional Sony Camcorder (DSR-370) or deck (DSR-1).
I just bought an iMac for video editing because of all the great things I heard about the Mac family. Well, I starting to feel sorry I did. Just to see if the iMac and it's basic iMovie can work with my Sony gear I did some testing. The iMac with iMovie are not able to recognize my Sony DSR-370 Camcorder or DSR-11 desk and this simply frustrating. I'm not new to computers or editing and I've worked with other NLE's.
Everything worked well under XP and Premiere. I have tried 6 different Firewire 800 to 400 connectors, cables and more and II still get the setup to see the camera or tape deck. I've changed cable many times and still not a darn thing.
Can anyone here give me a hint of what may being wrong? I hope to get my gear to work so I can get things done.
    James

Take a look at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2447188&tstart=0
It is not reasonable to expect a computer to be compatible with absolutely everything; it appears Sony is very compatible with Windows, but I'm not so sure about Macs. I don't own anything Sony, but my Canon works just fine with my Macs and I do a lot of video and photo editing. And yes, Macs are great for that. I always check for possible compatibility issues before making purchasing decisions. If you Camcorder uses a memory card, it would be simple to use a card reader and get your footage transferred that way.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Compatibility with Sony DSR-25 Deck

I have recently upgraded my computer to support cs5.  I have a PNY Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphics card, 8 gb ram, an Intel Xeon 5150 processor and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  My issue comes with running this system connected via firewire to a Sony DSR-25 deck.  When connected, while working on a project, at any point I click on the file menu, it takes several seconds (sometimes half a minute) to load the drop-down menu.  This is frustrating, but not entirely detrimental.  The main problem is that when I try to capture video (I use the keyboard shortcut F5 to bypass my previous issue) the capture video will usually crash the program, or it will take forever and when I try to capture, it will miss almost the entire first minute of video trying to catch up.  It starts rolling the tape, but just doesn't physically begin capturing at that time.  I spoke to someone at Adobe and we narrowed the problem down to an issue with the deck, and I am trying to figure out if this deck is absolutely not compatible with this system or if there is some sort of work-around.

    Try this:
In  Windows: Click on  Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device  Manager (up on top  left), or just click the Start button and search for  "device manager."
Swivel   down the entry for "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers, and right-click on   the item that is revealed (will depend on your computer/card   manufacturer). Select "Update Driver Software."
Click the "Browse my computer for driver software," and then the "Let me pick from a list" button.
In the list of drivers, select the one that has "(Legacy)" at the end; click Next, and then Close all the dialogs.
    Try capturing again.

  • Firewire Issues: External Hard Drives & DV  Deck Sony DSR 11 not recognized

So, I have this brand new $6000 Mac Pro that will not recognize a simple DV deck, nor the external HD's.
Thus, after spending seven hours searchig around last night, trying every configuration possible from updates, unplug power source, and everything else, I began making calls as of 4 am this morning.
I was referred to FCP Europe where I was informed that I needed FCS friver updates. (unavailable for 1.0.1) or perhaps it was a Sony issue. The deck & drives work fine with my G4 & Powerbook G4. With six fire wire ports on the Mac Pro, and nothing being recognized via a single fire wire port, does anyone have a simple, expedient solution? Thank you.

Ahhhh. Firewire issues. I'm convinced that these Macpros have some serious problems here. I am running a sony dsr11 also with a digi002. MY issues is bootup. . I have a mac pro with Tiger installed. My issue is I intermittently get a prohibitted error on bootup. The error looks like a no smoking sign without the cigerett. I have to re boot and sometimes the os boots right up othertimes not. I have sfound that I have to boot my sytem with noting hooked up first. It seems when you have high end firewire devices that the Bus just can't handle it. Real ****** for thos who bought the system for A/V work. Everything woks fine on my powerbook and my G5. Problem is with MACPRO! Do you also have other firewire devices hooked up? Are they daisychained together?

  • Trial by fire.  Three camera fitness shoot. TC fed by DVCAM Deck.

    Hi all,
I am embarking on a three camera shoot for two 90 minute fitness videos. The timecode will be fed to all three cameras by a DVCAM deck that we are also using to play the live music that the performers will be exercising to. This way all four sources (three cameras & 1 music) all have the same Time code.
Although I see a million potential editing Gotchyas in this scenario (and there are probably a million more that I don't see), I only have one question at this time...
    Regarding FCP Capturing...
Whenever the performers mess up and we have to rewind the music (DVCAM) and reshoot a section, the timecode (that FCP will need to read) on all three cameras will suddenly jump backwards by a few minutes. We will be very careful to pre-roll and post-roll the music before starting or stopping cameras so we do not actually BREAK the timecode, but the actual TC clock will be jumping backwards with every take. This seems like it might be difficult to capture for FCP... any thoughts?
    Thanks for your brainstorming.
    G5-2000MP, ATI 9800 Pro, 17 & 20 flat panels & PBG4 1.67   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Heya Zeb...
No problem on the TC IN on the cameras. Panasonic AJ-SDX900.
Regarding distribution of signal... feel free to point me in a direction... I have no idea and am on the hunt for just that piece of info.
Regarding VTR: Sony DSR-45. Has TC out, I hope it only spits out TC when the tape is rolling.... otherwise my whole paradigm is a house-o-cards.
    Regarding logging and capturing:
I assume that I am going to have to dust off my old fashion logging chops. Since I will have multiple instances of the same timecode on a single tape, I will probably have to manually set the in and out points and capture for each take. Then set the in and out points and capture the next take... etc.
My DP is trying to convince me to use a smart-slate... we are going back-n-forth about the pro's and con's.
A TC Generator will take care of many of the problems with the shoot, but it isn't the best answer as far as creating an editable (and more importantly, a re-editable) product. Remember, this whole thing is the equivalent of a three hour music video that is edited from probably about 20 hours of tape.
The TC generator will sync the cameras together, but I will still depend on older visual methods to sync the video to the music. When you have takes that are 15 to 25 minutes long, it would kind of stink to have to drop a 20 minute clip into the timeline and sync it, just because I wanted to find a 1 second long b-roll cut at the 18 minute mark.
IF, I can drive the entire shoot from a VTR that plays the performance music AND outputs timecode to three cameras.... seems to me that I will have hit a sweet spot for this type of production.
The music, and videotapes from three cameras will be in sync. If I "media manage" the project to a storage drive (or just want to offfload 15 hours of unused footage) the remaining clips will all have the right timecode embedded so when my client wants another complilation video, I can move things around with the knowledge that they will be in sync by simply lining up the TC.

  • Capturing Computer Activity on DVCAM deck

I am looking to capture the activity on a computer for a seminar that we are shooting. Is there a tablet type device - PC or MAC - that anyone has used that allows for s-video, firewire, or composite outputs that can be plugged directly into a DVCAM deck (Sony DSR11 is what I have) so that I can just pop in a DVCAM tape, hit record on the deck, and capure everything that happens on the screen? It would need to have some type of tablet type functionality so that the instructor could "write on" the tablet and that activity would be captured on output.
If anyone has created a similar set-up, I would be very interested to know.

What kind of ports does the Computer have? If it has a Video out (like on some laptops) you could easily just hook up an RCA or S-Video cable from the computer to the Deck.
You could also look into Converters. I have one for my laptop that converts the monitor out signal into an S-Video.
Lastly, you could try doing a capture using a screen capture program. This will be much more taxing on the computer itself, and would be risky at best for long seminars, but it's possible (something like Snapz Pro).
With any of those options, if you have the opportunity to test the setup now, rather than on site, that would be best <smile>.

  • Sony DHR-1000 DV VCR no longer recognized

Pre-Tiger, I recall using my Sony DHR-1000 DV VCR in iMovie on my PowerMac G5 (which I sold). It's also in Apple's device compatibility list for older iMovie versions. But the VCR is no longer recognized on either my iBook or my Mac Mini. Both are running Tiger and iMovie HD. The VCR doesn't show up in the Firewire section of System Profiler. My Sony HDV camcorder shows up fine on both computers using the same cable.
Was DHR-1000 support pulled from Tiger? Are the iBooks and Mac Minis different in some way than the G5 PowerMac?
This is a $5000 VCR and it's now useless without Firewire import capability!

    Aha ChromePlanet !
We share the same problem-mine in PAL.
This excellent link will take you to the some of the answers/noted problems.
    http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/iMovieHD_bugs.html#quick_DVimport
I'm back to using iMovie 2.1.2 on a G5 2GIG so I can reliably do a long project with the DHR-1000. It can only be described in polite/very polite terms as "ridiculous."
    Here's why:
1- iMovie 4.01 will import but on playback but will constantly have digital artifacts overlaid on viewing to external TV monitor. Pulling in/out the firewire cable from the deck (2x after a long moment each time)temporarily restores the picture until I click on a clip, bringing on the problem again. The solution is to use a camera to be able to view externally. Even then, I often have to reboot the computer otherwise there is no recognition of even the camera.
    2- iMovie 3 similar problems
3- iMovie 2.1.2 works with Sony deck. instant playback view via external Sony deck.
Most of my projects are 2-4 hours. There is no other way to archive these without a DVCAM tape. Thus iMovie 2.1.2 is for me the only one of these versions I can trust.
    And iMovie 5???
All the great advances in flexibility since version 2 mean little/mostly nothing in practice. So you have to ask Apple-Why is the firewire signal so weak in imovie?. I have asked , but no reply....
Was the Powermac you sold running Panther? Is that why the Sony deck was recognised?

    Mark
